Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot have talked about Lou Reed many times before on Sound Opinions, but often the discussion gets focused on the man's life instead of his music. This week they talk with author Jim Higgins about his new book that reviews every album Reed released in his lifetime. The hosts also review new albums from Common and Jack White. --Join our Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3sivr9TBecome a member on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3slWZvcSign up for our newsletter: https://bit.ly/3eEvRnGMake a donation via PayPal: https://bit.ly/3dmt9lUSend us a Voice Memo: Desktop: bit.ly/2RyD5Ah Mobile: sayhi.chat/soundops--Featured Songs:Common and Pete Rock, "Dreamin'," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Common and Pete Rock, "When The Sun Shines Again," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Common and Pete Rock, "This Man," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Jack White, "Old Scratch Blues," No Name, Third Man, 2024Jack White, "Archbishop Harold Holmes," No Name, Third Man, 2024Jack White, "Bless Yourself," No Name, Third Man, 2024Lou Reed, "Walk On The Wild Side," Transformer, RCA, 1972Lou Reed, "Coney Island Baby," Coney Island Baby, RCA, 1976Lou Reed and John Cale, "Images," Songs For Drella, Sire, 1990Lou Reed, "The Power of Positive Drinking," Growing Up in Public, Arista, 1980Lou Reed, "Egg Cream," Set the Twilight Reeling, Warner Bros., 1996Lou Reed, "Like A Possum," Ecstasy, Reprise, 2000Lou Reed, "Pale Blue Eyes (Live)," Take No Prisoners, Arista, 1978Luna, "Tiger Lilly," Bewitched, Elektra, 1994Lou Reed, "Edgar Allan Poe," The Raven, Sire, 2003Lou Reed, "Halloween Parade," New York, Sire, 1989Prince and the Revolution, "Purple Rain," Purple Rain, Warner Bros., 1984See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 117 Electronic Keyboards in Jazz, A Recorded History, Part 1 of 2 Playlist Length Start Time Introduction 05:42 00:00 1. Vernon Geyer, “Day After Day” from All Ashore / Day After Day (1938 Bluebird). Soloist, Hammond Electric Organ, Vernon Geyer. 02:22 05:42 2. Milt Herth Quartet / Milt Herth Trio, “Minuet in Jazz” from Home-Cookin' Mama With The Fryin' Pan / Minuet In Jazz (1938 Decca). Milt Herth was one of the first to record with the Hammond Organ Model A. His playing was more focused on melody and counterpoint and not so much on creating a lush progression of chords. This was recorded a few years before the availability of the Leslie rotating speaker, which added a special tone quality to later Hammonds, such as the model B3. 02:44 08:04 3. Milt Herth Quartet / Milt Herth Trio, “Looney Little Tooney” from Flat Foot Floojie / Looney Little Tooney (1938 Decca). Vocals, O'Neil Spencer; Drums, O'Neil Spencer; Guitar, Teddy Bunn; Hammond Organ, Milt Herth; Piano, Willie Smith (The Lion). 02:50 10:46 4. "Fats" Waller And His Rhythm, “Come Down to Earth, My Angel” from Come Down To Earth, My Angel / Liver Lip Jones (1941 Bluebird). Waller was an extremely popular ragtime and stride piano player and vocalist. In this number, he takes a rare turn on an electric organ, presumably an early model Hammond. Vocals, Piano, Electric Organ, "Fats" Waller; Bass, Cedric Wallace; Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, Gene Sedric; Drums, Slick Jones; Guitar, Al Casey; Trumpet, John Hamilton. 03:10 13:36 5. Collins H. Driggs, “When Day is Done” from The Magic Of The Novachord (1941 Victor). Soloist, Hammond Novachord, Collins H. Driggs. This was an early polyphonic keyboard that generated its sounds using valve, or vacuum tube, oscillators. Made by Hammond, the Novachord was an entirely different electronic instrument than its tone-wheel organs. The Novachord had unique, synthesizer-like controls over envelope generation, band pass filtering and vibrato controlled by a series of flip switches, offering the keyboardist a unique suite of sounds. 03:11 16:45 6. The Four Clefs, “It's Heavenly” from It's Heavenly / Dig These Blues (1943 Bluebird). Hammond Electric Organ, James Marshall. Another organ recording and a nice duet with a guitarist Johnny "Happy" Green. 02:41 19:54 7. Ethel Smith And The Bando Carioca, “Tico-Tico” from Tico-Tico / Lero Lero / Bem Te Vi Atrevido (1944 Decca). Another was a popular and skilled organist using a pre-B3 Hammond. 02:45 22:36 8. Slim Gaillard Quartette, “Novachord Boogie” from Tee Say Malee / Novachord Boogie (1946 Atomic Records). Bass, Tiny Brown; Drums, Oscar Bradley; Guitar, Slim Gaillard; Piano, Dodo Marmarosa. While the Hammond Novachord plays a prominent role in this recording, the player is not credited. 02:57 25:20 9. Milt Herth And His Trio,” Twelfth Street Rag” from Herthquake Boogie / Twelfth Street Rag (1948 Decca). Recorded in New York, NY, September 5, 1947. Described on the recording as a “Boogie Woogie Instrumental.” Hammond Organ, Milt Herth; Drums, Piano, Uncredited. Herth had been recording with the Hammond organ since 1937. 03:10 28:16 10. Ben Light With Herb Kern And Lloyd Sloop, “Benny's Boogie” from Benny's Boogie / Whispering (1949 Tempo). This track includes the triple keyboard combination of piano, organ, and Novachord. Hammond Electric Organ , Herb Kern; Piano, Ben Light; Hammond Novachord, Lloyd Sloop. 02:37 31:27 11. Johnny Meyer Met Het Kwartet Jan Corduwener, “There's Yes! Yes! in your Eyes” from Little White Lies / Thereʼs Yes! Yes! In Your Eyes (1949 Decca). Accordion player Johnny Meyer added a Hammond Solovox organ to his musical arrangements. The Solovox was monophonic and it added a solo voice to his performances. This recording is from the Netherlands. 03:22 34:04 12. E. Robert Scott, R.E. Wolke, “Instructions For Playing Lowrey Organo” (excerpt) from Instructions For Playing Lowrey Organo (circa 1950 No Label). Promotional disc produced by piano and organ distributor Janssen, presumably with the cooperation of Lowrey. This is a 12-inch 78 RPM disc, but is undated, so I believe that picking 1950 as the release year is safe because the Organo was introduced in 1949 and 78 RPM records were already beginning to be replaced in 1950 by the 33-1/3 RPM disc. Recordings of this instrument are extremely rare. I have no such examples within a jazz context, but being a competitor of the Hammond Solovox, I thought this was worth including. 03:23 37:26 13. Ethel Smith, “Toca Tu Samba” from Souvenir Album (1950 Decca). One of the great female masters of the Hammond Electric Organ was Ethel Smith. Her performances were mostly considered as pop music, but she had the knack for creating Latin jazz tracks such as this. Featuring The Bando Carioca; Hammond Electric Organ soloist, Ethel Smith. 02:25 40:48 14. The Harmonicats, “The Little Red Monkey” from The Little Red Monkey / Pachuko Hop (1953 Mercury). Jerry Murad's Harmonicats were an American harmonica-based group. On this number, they included the electronic instrument known as the Clavioline. The Clavioline produced a fuzzy square wave that could be filtered to roughly imitate many other instruments. The record is inscribed with the message, “Introducing the Clavioline,” but the player is not mentioned. 01:56 43:12 15. Djalma Ferreira E Seus Milionarios Do Ritmo, “Solovox Blues” from Parada De Dança N. 2 (1953 Musidisc). From Brazil comes a jazz group that included the Hammond Solovox Organ as part of its ensemble. Invented in 1940, the Solovox was a monophonic keyboard intended as an add-on to a piano for playing organ-flavored solos. It had a 3-octave mini keyboard and controls over vibrato and attack time, and tone settings for deep, full, and brilliant. Piano, Hammond Solovox Organ, Djalma Ferreira; Bass, Egidio Bocanera; Bongos, Amaury Rodrigues; Drums, Cecy Machado; Guitar, Nestor Campos. 02:31 45:08 16. Eddie Baxter, “Jalousie” from Temptation (1957 Rendezvous Records). Piano, Hammond Organ, Celesta (Electronic Celeste), Krueger Percussion Bass, Eddie Baxter; rhythm section, uncredited. Like Ethel Smith, Baxter was pushing the limits of popular music with his virtuosity on the organ and other instruments. In this track you can hear the electronic celesta with its chime-like sounds near the beginning before the electric organ and guitar dominate the rest of the piece. 02:33 47:38 17. Eddie Baxter, “Temptation” from Temptation (1957 Rendezvous Records). Hammond Electric Organ, Eddie Baxter. Piano, Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Krueger Percussion Bass, Eddie Baxter. In this track, you can clearly hear the Wurlitzer electric piano in several sections. 02:08 50:10 18. Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Advice to Medics” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). This excursion into one of the first records released by Sun Ra as a bandleader of the Arkestra was recorded in 1956 at RCA Studios, Chicago. This track is a solo for the Wurlitzer Electric Piano, an instrument invented in 1954 and that was quickly adopted by many jazz and popular music players. 02:02 52:17 19. Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “India” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). A work featuring the Wurlitzer Electric Piano played by Sun Ra, miscellaneous percussion; electric bass, Wilburn Green; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran; Timpani, Timbales, Jim Herndon; and trumpet, Art Hoyle. 04:48 54:18 20. Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Springtime in Chicago” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). This work features Sun Ra playing the acoustic and electric pianos. Wurlitzer Electric Piano, piano Sun Ra; bass, Victor Sproles; Tenor Saxophone, John Gilmore; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran. 03:50 59:14 21. Le Sun Ra And His Arkestra, “Sunology” from Super-Sonic Jazz (1957 El Saturn Records). Another number with both the acoustic and electric pianos. Of interest is how Sun Ra moves deftly from one keyboard to the other (these recordings were made in real time), often mid-phrase. This was a style of playing that Sun Ra would continue to perfect throughout his long career and many electronic keyboards. Wurlitzer Electric Piano, piano Sun Ra; bass, Victor Sproles; Tenor Saxophone, John Gilmore; Drums, Robert Barry and William Cochran; Alto Saxophone, James Scales; Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Pat Patrick. 12:47 01:02:54 22. Steve Allen, “Electronic Boogie” from Electrified Favorites (1958 Coral). From Steve Allen, who played the Wurlitzer Electric Piano on this track. This track has the characteristic brashness that was typical of the Wurlitzer sound. 02:23 01:15:40 23. Steve Allen, “Steverino Swings” from Electrified Favorites (1958 Coral). From Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Steve Allen. Unlike many tracks featuring the Wurlitzer Electric, which make use of its distortion and emphasize its sharp attack, it was possible to closely mimic an acoustic piano as well, as Allen does here. I had to listen to this several times before I believed that it was the Wurlitzer, as the liner notes state. But you can hear certain tell-tale sounds all along the way—such as the slight electrified reverb after a phrase concludes and the occasional thump of the bass notes played by the left hand. 02:54 01:18:02 24. Michel Magne, “Larmes En Sol Pleureur (Extrait D'un Chagrin Emmitouflé)” from Musique Tachiste (1959 Paris). Jazz expression in a third-stream jazz setting by French composer Michel Magne. Third-stream was a music genre that fused jazz and classical music. The term was coined in 1957 by composer Gunther Schuller after which there was a surge of activity around this idea. In this example, the Ondes Martenot and vocalist add jazz nuances to a chamber music setting, the interpretation being very jazz-like. Ondes Martenot, Janine De Waleine; Piano, Paul Castagnier; Violin, Lionel Gali; Voice, Christiane Legrand. 02:38 01:20:54 25. Ray Charles, “What'd I Say” from What'd I Say (1959 Atlantic). This might be the most famous track ever recorded using a Wurlitzer Electric Piano. The fuzzy, sharp tone added depth and feeling to the playing. The opening bars were imitated far and wide for radio advertising of drag races during the 1960s. 05:05 01:23:30 26. Lew Davies And His Orchestra, “Spellbound” from Strange Interlude (1961 Command). This was one of Enoch Light's productions from the early 1960s, when stereo separation was still an experiment. This is the theme from the Hitchcock movie with a melody played on the Ondioline, a monophonic organ and an otherwise jazzy arrangement with a rhythm section, reeds, and horns. Arrangement, Lew Davies; Ondioline, Sy Mann; Bass, Bob Haggart, Jack Lesberg; Cymbalum, Michael Szittai; Drums, George Devens, Phil Kraus; French Horn,Paul Faulise, Tony Miranda; Guitar, Tony Mottola; Reeds, Al Klink, Ezelle Watson, Phil Bodner, Stanley Webb; Trombone, Bobby Byrne, Dick Hixon, Urbie Green; Produced by, Enoch Light. 03:29 01:28:34 27. Sy Mann and Nick Tagg, “Sweet and Lovely” from 2 Organs & Percussion (1961 Grand Award). Duets on the Hammond B3 and Lowrey Organs “propelled by the urgent percussive drive of a brilliant rhythm section.” This is a unique opportunity to contract and compare the sounds of the Hammond and Lowrey organs with percussion. Hammond B3 Organ, Sy Mann, Nick Tagg. The track begins with the Lowrey and demonstrates the sliding tone effects made possible by its Glide foot switch. 02:58 01:32:02 28. Enoch Light And The Light Brigade, “Green Eyes” from Vibrations (1962 Command). More stereo separation hijinks from Enoch Light. This tune features the Ondioline in an exchange of lines with the guitar and other instruments. The Ondioline is first heard at about 35 seconds. Ondioline, Milton Kraus; Bass, Bob Haggart; Guitar, Tony Mottola; Percussion, Bobby Rosengarden, Dan Lamond, Ed Shaughnessy, Phil Kraus; Piano, Moe Wechsler; Trumpet – Doc Severinsen; Woodwind – Phil Bodner, Stanley Webb; Produced by, Enoch Light. 02:50 01:34:59 29. Jimmy Smith, “Begger for the Blues” from The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith--Bashin' (1962 Verve). Jimmy Smith was a great jazz soloist on the Hammond B3 organ. This stripped-down arrangement shows his nuanced expression skills with the organ. 07:26 01:37:49 30. Jimmy Smith, “Walk On The Wild Side” from The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith--Bashin' (1962 Verve). This big band arrangement of a theme from the movie Walk on the Wild Side features the Hammond B3 of Smith in the context of a full jazz orchestration. 05:54 01:45:12 31. Dick Hyman And His Orchestra, “Stompin' At The Savoy” from Electrodynamics (1963 Command). Arranged, Lowrey Organ, Dick Hyman; Bass, Bob Haggart; Drums, Osie Johnson; Guitar, Al Casamenti, Tony Mottola; Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bongos, Congas, Bass Drum, Bells, Cowbell, Bob Rosengarden, Phil Kraus; Produced by Enoch Light. Hyman shows off the steady, smooth tonalities of the Lowrey and also makes use of the Glide foot switch right from the beginning with that little whistling glissando that he repeats five times in the first 30 seconds. 02:50 01:51:06 32. Sun Ra, “The Cosmos” from The Heliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra, Vol. I (1965 ESP Disc). The instrumentation on this entire album is quite experimental, especially the dominance of the bass marimba, Electronic Celesta, and timpani of Sun Ra. The celesta is seldom heard on jazz records, but it is the only electronic keyboard found on this track. Marimba, Electronic Celesta, timpani, Sun Ra; Percussion, Jimhmi (sp Jimmy) Johnson; Performer, Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra; Baritone Saxophone, Percussion, Pat Patrick; Bass, Ronnie Boykins; Bass Clarinet, Wood Block, Robert Cummings; Bass Trombone, Bernard Pettaway; Flute, Alto Saxophone, Danny Davis; Percussion, timpani, Jimmi Johnson; Piccolo Flute, Alto Saxophone, Bells, Spiral Cymbal, Marshall Allen. 07:31 01:53:54 33. Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra, “The Magic City” from The Magic City (1966 Saturn Research). You won't be disappointed to know that Sun Ra gave the Clavioline a turn on this album. This was prior to his experimenting with synthesizers, which we will cover in Part 2 of this exploration of early electronic keyboards in jazz. He incorporated the Clavioline in many of his mid-1960s recordings. Clavioline, Piano, Sun Ra; Alto Saxophone, Danny Davis, Harry Spencer; Percussion, Roger Blank; Trombone, Ali Hassan; Trumpet, Walter Miller. 27:24 02:01:22 34. Clyde Borly & His Percussions, “Taboo” from Music In 5 Dimensions (1965 Atco). Vocals, Ondes Martenot, Janine De Waleyne. Yes, Ms. De Waleyne was a French vocalist and Ondes Martenot player. 03:33 02:28:44 35. Jeanne Loriod, Stève Laurent and Pierre Duclos, ''Ordinateur X Y Z” from Ondes Martenot (1966 SONOROP). Album of broadcast library music from France that happened to feature the Ondes Martenot played Jeanne Loriod; drums, uncredited. The dynamic expression features of the monophonic electronic instrument can be clearly experienced on this track. 02:05 02:32:16 36. Roger Roger, “Running with the Wind” from Chappell Mood Music Vol. 21 (1969 Chappell). Broadcast library recording with various themes played using the Ondes Martenot. This track features a solo Ondes Martenot and is backed by an electric harpsichord. The Ondes Martenot used the same electronic principle to create smooth, flowing tones as the Theremin, only that it was controlled by a keyboard. In this piece, the articulation of the Ondes Martenot is quite apart from that of the Theremin, including its double-tracked tones and the quick pacing which is rather un-Theremin-like. 01:28 02:34:20 37. Roger Roger, “Night Ride” from Chappell Mood Music Vol. 21 (1969 Chappell). Broadcast library recording with various themes played using the Ondes Martenot. While this track features a flute solo, you can hear the Ondes Martenot from time to time, especially in the middle break. Other uncredited musician play drums, harp, and perhaps a celesta on this track. 01:35 02:35:45 Opening background music: Dick Hyman And His Orchestra, “Mack the Knife,” “Satin Doll” and “Shadowland” from Electrodynamics (1963 Command). Dick Hyman playing the Lowrey organ. Arranged, Lowrey Organ, Dick Hyman; Bass, Bob Haggart; Drums, Osie Johnson; Guitar, Al Casamenti, Tony Mottola; Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bongos, Congas, Bass Drum, Bells, Cowbell, Bob Rosengarden, Phil Kraus; Produced by Enoch Light. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For a transcript, please see my blog, Noise and Notations. I created an illustrated chart of all of the instruments included in this podcast, paying special attention to the expressive features that could be easily adopted by jazz musicians. On The Wild Side" lag. We're talking about Lou Reed's 1972 glam rock landmark, Transformer, which makes the 2020 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list at #109. This episode sees the triumphant return of Gia Mora - the actor, activist, singer, writer, etc. - who knocked our socks off when talking about James Taylor many episodes ago. Not only does she bring credibility - she's a musician! - but she also came ready with stories about Lou Reed's grumpy voicemails, his potential influence on Beck's work and more. As usual, Nathan Smith and Sonya Walton join Eamon O'Flynn as we dig into an enigmatic, complicated and exceptionally influential artist.Leave comments on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook at @rrmusicpod or visit our website at recordroulettepodcast.com.Runtime: 60 minutesMusic by lemonmusicstudio from Pixabay.

Abigail - Biting My Nails (1976) Co-written by John Phillips and his wife at the time, Genevieve Waite. Abigail was a sex symbol in Australia, and she appeared in Mel Gibson's first film, "Summer City" in 1977. She played the part of "woman in pub". Barclay James Harvest - Child Of The Universe (1974) Barclay James Harvest - Loving is Easy (1978) Barclay James Harvest - Mocking Bird (1971) I don't get how a band like this got to record for such a long time. They really do rely on cliché after cliché. The Moodies are very similar, but there was a kind of charm in their records that just doesn't exist here. It's like a cross between Trans-Siberia Orchestra and America. Devo - Mongoloid (1977) Band name subtitled "The D-Evolution Band" on labels. "Jocko-Homo" - from the soundtrack of "In the Beginning Was the End.. (the truth about DE-EVOLUTION)" a film by Chuck Statler. Chuck Statler, arguably the godfather of the music video, is a pioneer who directed music films for upstart record labels and emerging superstars like Elvis Costello, Madness, and DEVO before MTV’s existence. Electric Light Orchestra - Beatles Forever (1982) Jeff Lynne: "It's 'cause it's so fawning, y'know. It's so over the top, y'know. Um... maybe one day it'll come out. I'd like to sort of redo it or something." Recorded for their Secret Messages album, which was originally intended to be a double album. This track didn't make it onto what turned out to be another 4/4 sunny dirgefest. I didn't even buy their last record. In Buffalo, there used to be a TV station (1977-78) called MICR, on which you could see local announcements being posted bulletin-board style, in rolling text on a screen. While that was happening, a guy would spin tunes. So...a guy was playing a song that seemed to reach into my primordial soul. It was like a dream that came true. It was "One Summer Dream" by Electric Light Orchestra. I called the DJ and he (Bill Elliot maybe?) obliged me, live on TV, with 3 or 4 more songs by this band. I remember he played "Fire On High" which I immediately recognized as the intro music to CBS Sports Spectacular (a competitor to Wide World of Sports on ABC). Thus began my 4-year allegiance to all things ELO. I scarfed down their entire discography. Learned much. I know the year because he told me that their new album was coming out soon. A double album! I just liked the sound. Those doubled Ovation guitars, the safe arrangements, the real orchestra. It really inspired me/us the same way Rush, King Crimson, The Beatles had. Ella Fitzgerald - It's Up To Me and You (1968) She didn't write too many songs herself, but she DID write this one, a paean to MLK, in the wake of his murder. Barclay James Harvest - Beyond The Grave (1975) Genevieve Waite - Biting My Nails (1974) Geneviève Waite, a South African actress, singer and former model, married John Phillips on 31 January 1972, and they had two children, Tamerlane Phillips and Bijou Phillips. They divorced in 1985. She died in 2019. Listening to this album reminds me of listening to the Gayle Moran album I Loved You Then...I Love You Now. The feeling that I am the only person in the world listening to this at this particular moment. But no more! Now YOU are listening as well. Devo - Mongoloid (1978) Album version Genevieve Waite - Love is coming back (1974) Genevieve Waite - Times of Love (1974) Gunhill Road - 42nd Street (1971) Gunhill Road or Gun Hill Road. Gunhill Road issued one album on Kama Sutra Records, which was produced by Kenny Rogers. The album was issued twice because at the time, the drug references made in the song 'Back When My Hair Was Short' were frowned upon. So a new version was recorded, and the album was reissued with different sequencing. To no effect. Except for the Top 40 hit. Which is to say, it reached #40. Gunhill Road - Back When My Hair Was Short (1972) Original nasty version. Gunhill Road - Baked Bean Band (1971) Genevieve Waite - Mr. Blue (1974) Paul McCartney - I'll Give You a Ring (1982) Renegade Soundwave - Biting My Nails (1989) The Primitives - The Ostrich (1964) Lou Reed's first group with John Cale was the Primitives, a short-lived group assembled to support an anti-dance single penned by Reed, "The Ostrich". I never liked Lou Reed, Nico, The Velvet Underground, or anything related. I think that "Walk On The Wild Side" would have been another joyless dirge if it were not for my man Bowie. On Pickwick Records whaaaaa? John Phillips - Let It Bleed, Genevieve (1970) From the only record he released in his lifetime, The Wolf King of LA. John Phillips - Mr. Blue (1975?) Recorded with members of the Stones. The "bands" Tribe and King's Road made soundalikes for the Pickwick label, and they are notable for their ham-handed attempts to capture the energy of the original "happenings" with fake crowd noise and announcements. I love them. Tribes - I Think I Love You (1970) Tribes - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1970) Tribes - Mississippi (1970) Tribes - Question (1970) In the tradition of... Barclay James Harvest - Taking Some Time On (1970) These two record covers. So THIS was the record we had when we were kids. What a scam!! The Tribes became Tribes became Tribe. Naughty Pickwick Records.

‘Sinatra, Presley, Jagger, Popeye and now Duffo.' — Andy Warhol 1980 ‘I don't think it's overstating the case to say that, had Jeff Duff hailed from a country in the top half of the world, he could now be as acknowledged and acclaimed as David Bowie or Lou Reed or Iggy Pop.' — Glenn A. Baker, rock historian IN A FLAMBOYANT AND OFTEN CONTROVERSIAL MUSIC CAREER JEFF HAS RELEASED THIRTY ALBUMS INCLUDING A RECENT ALBUM WITH MEMBERS OF LEGENDARY BRITISH ROCK BAND DEEP PURPLE. When Duffo took refuge in England in the eighties, he had, as they say, worn out his welcome in Australian rock. He was simply too much of a handful, this ‘waif with a wharfie's voice!' camping it up out front of his trail-blazing rock ensemble ‘Kush‘. At the time, Jeff's androgynous stage persona, dressed in leotards, garish make-up and a touch of the operatics was considered far too outrageous for many Australian audiences. Duff moved to the UK in 1978 where he recorded and performed as Duffo, releasing several albums, touring Europe and having sporadic chart success in Holland and Italy. He also recorded under the names Ivor Biggin and Jupiter Jones. It was somewhat surprising to see him return to Australia to indifferent audiences in 1988, when he performed as a jazz singer with his Jeff Duff Orchestra, an experimental outfit. His signature song remains Lou Reed's ‘Walk On The Wild Side', which he has recorded at least three times. The Jeff Duff Orchestra album featured some reworking of older material, ‘Pilot' and the excellent ‘Killing This Affair'.

So for now, it's time for another episode of The Pulse here on BPM Pod, where I look at some of the music I've recently encountered – some new, some old, some finished, some not. On this episode, I look at new music from Haim, Perfume Genius, and Fiona Apple. But first, I want to turn my attention to one of my favourite singer-songwriters today, and someone we've heard a bit of before on this podcast, and that is Jason Isbell with his album Reunions. Jason Isbell – Reunions The fourth album from American alt-country soft-rock blues-rock singer-songwriter Jason Isbell, accompanied here by The 400 Unit. Follows The Nashville Sound – a great album – from 2017. Now I read somewhere that Isbell thinks Reunions is his strongest work yet and that set me up for expecting a lot, so do keep that in mind. But overall, Reunions for me was good, not great. On the plus side, the sound here is different and has a lot more resemblance to a well produced Jackson Browne album, or offcuts of Dire Straits. There's a lot of overdubbing and layering here with some dreamlike effects, stereo landscapes and so on. In terms of the songwriting, it's largely strong, with stand out tracks such as Overseas, Be Afraid and Only Children really stealing the show. A couple for me fall by the wayside, including St Peter's Autograph, Running With Our Eyes Closed, and controversially What've I Done To Help – a track which people seem to love for the Bill Withers slash Walk on the Wild Side blend, but is a track I think is overly long, repetitive and quite weak lyrically. There are excellent performances from the band members, as always. Dave Cobb does brilliantly with the production too. But unlike his previous releases – Southeastern and Something more than free particularly – there's something in Reunions which brings distance and unrelatability. It's not somehow as touching or heartfelt, even though individual elements are excellent, whereas his other releases demand repeat listens to understand all of the emotions underneath. So I overall like the direction Isbell has taken with this album, particularly in terms of the new sounds he has created, but for me it is not his best. Still a very worthy addition to his catalogue, and I recommend fans buy it, and newcomers give it a listen at least. Haim women in Music Part 3 Now this is not strictly a review, as the album has now been delayed until June sometime, due to the current nonsense in the world. But with that said, I want to talk about it because the first handful of tracks from the upcoming album really point to something special. Now I have been a Haim fan for a long time, even when I had people saying they were poppy Fleetwood Mac rip-offs. To me they've always had some kind of sense of humour and gravitas about them, as well as a tonne of talent. And while I still don't fully understand or hear the influences that Haim tout so often – such as Destiny's Child, TLC and so on – I do get the pop sensibilities that they evoke. The tracks that are out there so far are Summer Girl, Now I'm In It, Hallelujah, The Steps, I Know Alone, and Don't Wanna. So there's almost half the album out there right now. For me, the strongest tracks are Don't Wanna and The Steps, but I guess this is because it appeals to my previously mentioned Fleetwood Mac tendencies. Summer Girl was released a while ago now kind of out of the blue and has a definite – again I mention this – Walk On The Wild Side vibe. It's very non-Haim but also very Haim. One track that sounds very non-Haim is I Know Alone, which has a strange but somehow alluring music video of the sisters dancing in a socially distant manner. It's a song that sounds more akin to something from Caroline Polachek, notably the song Doors, and therefore is not so far removed from the Haim sound, but is a little different. Lyrically, I find the Haim track I Know Alone pretty weak, and it's too repetitive for my liking, too generic, and too electronic for my taste. However, a bit like the directional change I praised Jason Isbell for earlier, I like that Haim are trying something new. So the album Women in Music Part 3 is not out for a little while but, based on the tracks so far, I think we're in for an absolute treat from Haim and I cannot wait to get stuck into the album for real. Perfume Genius Set My Heart on Fire Immediately Perfume Genius, the moniker of singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas, released this album this week to absolute critical acclaim. I confess: I had never heard of Perfume Genius before. But I guarantee you I will be tracking music from Perfume Genius in the future. I wasn't blown away by this album quite to the gushing same level of reviews from Alex Petridis in The Guardian and so on, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The tracks here are certainly pop, but of a candied late seventies early eighties vibe, somewhat like Paul Young or Bryan Ferry. Vocally, this album is excellent. There's real longing, hurt and strain across the album, particularly on songs like Just A Touch. The singles – notably On The Floor – have an almost Vampire Weekend vibe to them. And for an artist who writes a lot about addiction, bullying, and sexuality, there's a happiness in many places on this record. A couple of tracks here can't be put into the same synth-driven slick pop bucket as the rest though, notably Describe, which is a kind of noir-ish pop-grunge track, which I actually kind of feel like is what Neil Young was trying to go for with his eighties New Wave slash grunge idea but never really achieved. It's a weird track for sure, and I heard someone describe it as 'gay grunge' which I don't know is an appropriate or correct description, but equally I cannot quite put my finger on how to describe it either. I do think the album is a little long, with 13 tracks stretching the limit a little, although they are all short pop affairs. And yeah, it is a strange album for sure, and won't be at the top of everyone's list. It's not the top of mine either, but I will say that as a throwback to an era which never existed kind of sound, this certainly hits the mark. Fiona Apple Fetch the Boltcutters This is one I only just got around too, released back in April. Fiona Apple is someone I've dabbled with in the past, and someone I knew about, but not someone I paid much attention to musically. So when I was faced with album, not knowing all that much about her previous work, you can probably sympathise that this very atypical, bizarre album hit me like a train. And I loved it. Musically, it's like a part-improvised, percussion poetry session. Fiona cries out, scratches, scowls, shouts, and rages on the topics of bullying, sexual assault, confinement, lies, truth, friendship and more. It's angry, yet oddly darkly humorous What's more, this album is largely recorded on the fly and at home, and that could be a criticism but it really isn't. It helps breed the unpredictability, the explosiveness, the sudden changes in rhythm, tempo and keys. I hear shades of Joni Mitchell here, of Suzanne Vega, even of something completely different like J Dilla or Sharon Van Etten. It's a maddening yet exciting mix of music. It's not polished, it's not perfect, and that's what makes it great. There's no messing around here, and for an album about getting the boltcutters and cutting yourself free from whatever prison you've created, the sound does exactly what Fiona preaches – it breaks free of the usual routines and structures and offers something unique, insightful, and certainly divisive. I love it, and would urge you check it out, that's Fiona Apple with Fetch The Boltcutters. And that's all for the Pulse for now here on BPM Pod. You can find all of the releases I just mentioned on BPM Pod dot com, and on the social channels (Facebook and Instagram). And you can read more on BPM Pod dot com, and revisit all of the previous episodes there, or on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to your podcasts. On the next episode, we'll have part two of the extended podcast with Chris Weinhardt, so stay tuned for that. Stay safe and stay lucky, and thank you for listening to and supporting BPM Pod.

Lou Reed, founder of the Velvet Underground, is perhaps best known for Walk On The Wild Side, from his 1972 album Transformer. In 1990, A Tribe Called Quest sampled Reed's classic track. Nick and Charles discuss these influential artists and go in depth on perhaps their greatest hits respectively.

This week - one of our favourite interviews ever. When Tom talked to Alanis Morissette in 2002, she told us about dealing with the intense hurricane of fame from Jagged Little Pill and how it almost derailed her life completely. Alanis also discusses what she looks for in a guy, how her art reflects her life and why she never feels guilty for the money she makes. It's an intensely revealing and often very funny interview. We also have an early '80s chat with Lou Reed. Although Lou is known to give terrible interviews, he is relaxed and pretty charming here as he discusses his work with The Velvet Underground and the real reason "Walk On The Wild Side" became a hit. (His answer is pretty amusing).
JEFF COPELAND is an author, screenwriter and non-fiction television producer whose close friendship with Andy Warhol superstar HOLLY WOODLAWN (immortalized in Lou Reed's biggest hit song "Walk On the Wild Side") dramatically impacted his professional and personal life in ways he never expected. (46:40) EXPLICIT EPISODE NOTES: Andy Warhol made her famous. Lou Reed immortalized her in song. And JEFF COPELAND wrote the book that chronicles the extraordinary journey of a 15-year-old runaway who, as Reed croons, “shaved her legs and then he was a she.” As Jeff tells me in his PIERSON TO PERSON episode WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, he distinctly remembers the first time he laid eyes on the drag queen who would so dramatically impact his professional and personal life. JEFF: “I spotted this androgynous being, and I couldn’t figure out if this was a man or a woman. I turned to my friend and asked, ‘Who is that?’ And he said, ‘Oh, that’s Holly Woodlawn. She’s an Andy Warhol superstar. Don’t bother with her. She’s a mess!’ And I was intrigued. That night, as I tried to sleep, I couldn’t get Holly Woodlawn out of my mind. She just haunted me.” Jeff was a 25-year-old aspiring screenwriter at the time, and his fascination with Holly Woodlawn quickly turned into action. He found Holly, then 42, listed in the phone book, called her up and said he was writing a movie that she’d be perfect for. He invited her to dinner and the two hit it off immediately. (Jeff would later move into the apartment next to Holly’s.) JEFF: “We were extremely close. She told me her secrets. I told her mine. We shared the same insecurities. We were both misfits trying to fit in.” Jeff finished his script and started shopping it around with Holly Woodlawn attached. Nobody was interested. However, an intern at a literary agency fished the script out of the trashcan it had been thrown into – along with some biographical information and photos of Holly that Jeff had also submitted – and thought her story would make for a good book. The intern’s intuition proved to be right. A LOW LIFE IN HIGH HEELS: THE HOLLY WOODLAWN STORY was published in 1991 – a collaboration between Holly and Jeff, with Jeff doing the heavy lifting. Although Jeff didn’t really want to write a book, he agreed to do it with the understanding that if the movie rights were sold, he would write the screenplay. CUT TO: A year later, Jeff reads in Liz Smith’s gossip column that Madonna is going to star in a film based on Holly Woodlawn’s book and that actor/playwright Harvey Fierstein is going to write the screenplay. JEFF: “It was devastating. It was such a painful experience for me to have my best friend turn on me like that. She, essentially, stabbed me in the back. But I ended up thinking, ‘You know, Holly Woodlawn has only one story. Jeff Copeland has a million he can whip up. So, Holly, you take your story and go with Harvey Fierstein. Go with Columbia Pictures.’ I wasn’t going to stand in the way.” Eventually, the Madonna/Fierstein/Columbia deal fell through. And, despite the script being optioned a few more times by other producers, no movie about the life of Holly Woodlawn was ever made. But Holly never gave up hope that one day it would be – even on her deathbed. JEFF: “Holly was like Norma Desmond, clinging to that dream. And it was very tragic. Holly was an alcoholic and she just spiraled out of control. It really bothered me to see her decline physically because of her alcoholism. And when I saw her last, she was living in a convalescent home and I actually brought her some gingerbread from Starbucks, and tried to make peace. I never stopped caring about Holly or her wellbeing.” Holly Woodlawn died on December 6, 2015 at the age of 69. Jeff Copeland is now writing a new book about his many wild experiences with her called: Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn. For our November show, we got a chance to link with prolific much loved disco singer Christine Wiltshire - all the way from Amsterdam! Check out Hans R. de Vries bio below for all the facts on the much accomplished songbird and take a listen to our two hour interview as Christine shares some of the memories from Disco's Golden Age! Singer Christine Wiltshire , originally a native of Brooklyn, New York started her professional career as in the Luther Vandross quintet LUTHER in 1976 and broke through internationally with the Patrick Adams's group MUSIQUE by 1978 with international hits as "In The Bush" and "Keep On Jumpin' ", which resulted in a Gold Record for album Musique and her group was nominated Billboard's “Best Girl Group” as part of the group “Musique” in 1978. She also composed for the group. Allthough not on the record cover of Alphonse Mouzon's produced group POUSSEZ! Christine did all (lead-) vocals for that project. Hits: "Come On And Do It" and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye". She got her biggest hit song with "Weekend", originally recorded by Patrick Adams' studio group Phreek of which Wiltshire was a member. The song was heavily played by Larry Levan yet it was commercially unavailable so it did not enter any charts 1n 1976. In the early 1980s, William Socolov, the co-owner of Sleeping Bag Records, invited Levan to make a new version of "Weekend". It became more successful than the original version, peaking at No. 54 on the British pop chart and No. 9 on the Billboard Dance chart in 1983. And in 2016 "Weekend" is again re-released with Blaqhol Remixes and has entered some European charts. Christine Wiltshire toured around the world with a.o. Luther Vandross, Zulema, Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, Samantha Sang, The Marvelettes & Marianne Faithful. As a session singer she can be heard on recordings by a.o.Lou Reed (female vocals on "Walk On The Wild Side"), Melba Moore, Keith Richards (of Rolling Stones), John Phillips (of Mamas and Papas), John Lennon (of Beatles) & Yoko Ono, Jocelyn Brown, Zulema, Candi Staton, Lolitta Holloway, Eddie Kendricks (of The Temptations), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Herbie Mann, Latoya Jackson, Cuba Gooding Sr.and Robert Palmer. Through the years Christine now also developed herself as a Jazz and Standards singer and she performs songs from The Great American Songbook at Supper Clubs and intimate venues, next to her work as a Pop and former Disco singer.
Sandra and Allegra sing intros to songs, share studio and tour stories and relate experiences as background singers for Frontline artists. – In Frontline Records Rewind Episode 68, executive producer, Adel Meisenheimer, hosts the show, interviewing Sandra Stephens and Allegra Parks. It’s a full hour of Girl Power! These ladies sang background vocals for Jon Gibson, Scott Blackwell, Lanny Cordola and other Frontline artists. Though it has been about 25 years since they wrote, recorded and toured hit songs, Sandra and Allegra still recall them and treat listeners with acappella intros. Sandra shares how a Jon Gibson song changed her life and moved her to make a commitment to Christ. Soon after, she and Allegra had an opportunity to exchange vocal technique lessons from Jon for their background vocal work on a track. Nice barter! Then he recruited them for vocals on almost every track of “Forever Friendsâ€. Listeners will want to tune in closely to hear their amazing vocal contribution. The ladies are forever friends and fans of Jon Gibson and expound on his exceptional singing, intense recording techniques and endearing personality. After writing with Jon, the ladies met with Scott Blackwell, who presented a cassette tape with his house dance music and commissioned them to write lyrics for it. Sandra relates how lyrics poured out and Scott never said “no†to her lyrical ideas, exercising a “no rules†process. The episode includes a couple tracks from “Walk On The Wild Sideâ€, the first album on which they collaborated. Sandra and Allegra toured with Scott and Jon simultaneously, hitting about every state in the USA. Boy do they have some stories!
