We had the pleasure of interviewing sym fera over Zoom video!Los Angeles-based sym fera are a duo that make atmospheric electronic rock music (reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails) with an interesting twist - nobody knew who was in the band. This mysterious nature and captivating melodies had intrigued listeners, with their single 11/8 amassing over 400,000 streams. The song was also placed within the hit television series, Ozark, creating further interest in the band. The group recently released a remix package of 11/8 (orchestral and electronic remixes). sym fera recently drop their newest single, ‘Beg'. At the same time as the release, they will reveal their identities (Nick Simmons – the son of Gene Simmons and Vinnie Ferra – co-founder of Beehive).Their first EP was released under State of The Art Records, helmed by Ian McEvily, Marc Jordan, and Mike Clemenza, who themselves did not know the real names of the band members before they made an offer to sign them. The reason for hiding their identities was to create a social experiment in a time when name and social following seem to be the most common reasons for artists to garner any support or movement early on. Would they be successful without using any industry ties? Could they break through the noise and garner a following without millions of followers? The answer is, yes. We want to hear from you! He has also written for such artists as Bette Midler, Joe Cocker, Josh Groban and Manhattan Transfer, but is arguably best known for his worldwide #1 hit Rhythm of My Heart made famous by ROD STEWART who went on to record more of Marc's work, including Tears of Hercules and Charlie Parker Loves Me. Marc's songs have been on 35 MILLION CDs and he was recently inducted into the CANADIAN SONGWRITER'S HALL OF FAME. Marc also performs as a member of the quartet “Lunch at Allen's."Amy began her career as a staff songwriter for MCA, subsequently moving on to Warner-Chappell and EMI. Interview by Kris PetersMore often than not, the music industry is dictated to more by who and/or what you know, rather than the quality of your musical output. It is something that has been a staple part of the industry for as long as most of us can remember, and is accepted more as a given across the board. So, then, it is refreshing when a band comes along whose members have the pedigree and personal contacts to guarantee success before a note is even committed to recording but instead shun that privilege in favour of earning their stripes on their own terms. It is a unique and refreshing approach and one very rarely taken, but it is a testament to the confidence, ability, and respect of the two members of alternative rock outfit Sym Fera who decided from the outset to let their music dictate their fate.Unlike other bands who have shunned the spotlight in favour of anonymity, Sym Fera are not using it as a gimmick or point of attention. It is purely for creative reasons and one which has so far borne fruit.Their first EP was released under State of The Art Records, helmed by Ian McEvily, Marc Jordan, and Mike Clemenza, who themselves did not know the real names of the band members before they made an offer to sign them. They have since had their music feature on television, including the hit Netflix show Ozark, and they continue to release cryptic, cinematic music videos and shadowy live performances that showcase a unique and dramatic artist project, drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd, James Blake, and Bon Iver. Both members - let's call them V and N for now - sat down with HEAVY to delve deeper into the talented musical enigma that is Sym Fera."We are two guys in LA who have always been jamming with each other," N began. "LA's a - despite the reputation - still a music town, so my partner and I have been jamming in clubs and jam sessions and speak ezy's and all sorts of crap all around town for quite a while. By the time we started to make music and record it and actually put it out, we had already been playing with each other in various things for years. As way of intro to us, it's just two long-time friends who… I guess the pandemic inspired us to actually put the shit out for a change instead of just do it for fun. We wanted to do it the old way where you lead with the stuff and the artwork and finding out what people look like and what they're like in their personal lives was kind of an afterthought. It came way later, if it ever came at all. It only really applied to actual famous people, getting into people's personal lives, otherwise it was check out this band or don't. That appealed to us a lot, so we decided to not tell people and see if we would get some progress made from the stuff itself and that alone. So far it's been small but very gratifying and satisfying."Sym Fera are described as an atmospheric rock outfit, but that tag merely scratches the sonic surface."I guess so," N measured when asked if that is a fair description. "The word rock got expanded quite a bit since the 70s and 60s. I think people forget - even in the 70s - it also applied to artists like Pink Floyd. There's a huge Earth of difference sonically between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin or AC/DC, so I think if you use rock in that very, very big umbrella term then sure, we're atmospheric. It's funny. Whenever anyone asks us what genre it's like we can't really commit because we love artists like Beck and Pink Floyd's a great example too and Radiohead and all these artists that won't pick a team and stick with it. They just keep adding instruments and changing things and taking risks. I think in terms of those types of rock bands, that makes sense to me."In the full interview, N & V talk about their latest single Beg and how it has been received, the four singles they have released to date and how each represents Sym Fera, future releases and how they will be structured, the main reasons behind keeping their identities under wraps for now and the pride at having your music respected based on merit alone, keeping their anonymity when playing live, how far they plan to take Sym Fera and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Marc Jordan continues to challenge and reinvent himself as a songwriter, composer, and vocalist. On his latest album release, titled “Waiting For The Sun To Rise”, the Juno award winning artist has penned several original songs, blended with a few new arrangements of some well-known tunes, such as the Tears For Fears classic “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. The album contains a harmonious blend of jazz, folk, and pop. Lyrically, Marc reflects on his time living in the American West, thoughts about the problems our world is facing, loneliness sparked by the pandemic, and the joys of the natural world. This is arguably his most introspective collection of songs in his vast canon of work, backed by lush strings from the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, with collaborations from Lou Pomanti and Randy Brecker. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome back to the show, Marc Jordan.

On today's show, world renowned singer-songwriter and record producer Marc Jordan talks about music, song writing, and his new album Waiting for the Sun to Rise. GUEST OVERVIEW: Best known for “Rhythm of My Heart,” his 1991 hit for Rod Stewart, Marc Jordan has been an in-demand songwriter and recording artist since signing with Warner in 1978. In 1994, Jordan won a Juno Award for his album RECKLESS VALENTINE and a Genie Award for his song “Shadow Dance.” His new album WAITING FOR THE SUN TO RISE comes hot on the heels of the Juno-nominated BOTH SIDES, and represents another deep dive into the jazz-tinged, wholly original soundscape Jordan revisits with each new release.
A songwriter's songwriter, Marc Jordan is best known for writing (along with John Capek) “Rhythm of My Heart,” the 1991 smash for Rod Stewart. Marc's songs have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Diana Ross, Cher, Chicago, Bette Midler, Natalie Cole, Kenny Loggins, Kim Carnes and the Manhattan Transfer, to name a few.Beside releasing her own successful albums and singles, Sky, 62, has written for a host of A-listers; several collaborations with Olivia Newton-John stand out as career highlights. This debut stab at joining musical forces has both forged fresh takes on classics and introduced new, original compositions.Covers include Tom Petty's Free Fallin', The Beach Boys's God Only Knows and Bonnie Raitt's You.Choosing material was not an exercise in exact science.“It was more trial and error,” Sky said. “One or the other of us would come up with ideas and what we tried to do was not just do the songs you normally think of as duets, but try and find songs that stylistically blend in with both of us and have some relevance to our history, and then try to make it into a duet.”Duets may sound like sweet musical magic to the masses' untrained ears. Hearing how the sausage is actually made lends fresh perspective. Terms and phrases, such as “accommodating range” and “the challenge of singing into each other's phrasing,” crop up when Sky is quizzed about the often-tedious recording process and its “challenges.”“You have to be humble. Because it's not, ‘My way or the highway.' It's definitely a collaboration.”Website www.luxelifediscovered.com Youtube Roku Amazon Fire TV

A few years ago we put together a couple of special episodes of Folk Roots Radio for Canada's 150th birthday. We were really happy about the way they turned out, and thought you'd enjoy hearing them again. Enjoy! Join us on Episode 331 of Folk Roots Radio for a very special episode that celebrates the history and diversity of the country we're proud to call our home, while recognizing the fact that Canada's first nations inhabited this land long before the settlers came. This episode features music from Asani, Tudjaat, Andrea Menard, Same Latitude As Rome, Cotillion, Bruce Cockburn, Maria Dunn, Mike Ford, James Gordon, Stompin' Tom Connors, Jason Collett, Marc Jordan & Ian Thomas and Toronto Children's Chorus with Jean Ashworth Bartle & Ruth Watson Henderson. We hope you enjoy the mix we've put together. If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music and then you'll really make a difference to their income during this difficult time when it's much more challenging to find live show opportunities. Folk Roots Radio is a labour of love - a full time hobby.
