On this edition of the program it's music from The Mavericks, and conversation with original member, front man and vocalist Raul Malo. He was and was on the program in mid 2024 when they had several concert stops in the region. Now we'll hear about - and from, their newest album – Moon & Stars.
It's a cover show. It's a celebration. It's a reconnaissance regarding a renaissance. To what do we owe this week's offering? The answer is clearly the songs of Bob Dylan who, at one time recorded under the non de plume Blind Boy Grunt and we've got a track from the Broadside Ballads collection to prove it. But this week's show will focus primarily on covers of Dylan tracks going back to Sam Cooke live at the Copa to an oddball cover by The Grass Roots. We'll also share some fresh takes from Eric Clapton, Raul Malo, Audra Mae & The Forest Rangers, and a lovely cover of a rare but popular piece called Walkin' Down The Line. We're celebrating a multi-generational master of his dominion where his words and melodies honor the past and carve a well-defined path leading into the future of America's songwriting craft. Tune into Community Radio for Sonoma County on another Friday morning…via the stream at kowsfm.com/listen.

Episode 273: Thirty years ago, legendary R&B singer Delbert McClinton proved he was ahead of his time by launching his Sandy Beaches Cruise, a January festival at sea that featured his friends and associated artists from the bluesy side of Americana. Since then, the music cruise business has flourished across many genres. A company called Star Vista Live bought Sandy Beaches from Delbert a few years ago and now does the management while Delbert himself acts as host. I got a fortunate invitation to act as artist interviewer on this year's cruise, and they let me report my own account of this luxurious but accessible experience. In this hour you'll hear from Delbert himself, Mavericks lead singer Raul Malo, cruise lifer Marcia Ball, emerging artist Yates McKendree, singer Etta Britt, gospel great Anne McCrary, and more.

Additionally, JD co-wrote three songs with Don Henley on his End of the Innoncence album, including “Heart of the Matter,” and found success with the Dixie Chicks' cover of his “I'll Take Care of You.” As an artist, JD launched his career with the group Longbranch / Pennywhistle, which he founded with future Eagle Glenn Frey. Soon after, he co-founded the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with Chris Hillman of The Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. In total, JD has released seven solo studio albums between 1972 and 2015, and landed two Top 10 hits as a recording artist with “You're Only Lonely” and the James Taylor duet “Her Town Too.” Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Justin joined this week by Elvis fan and host of "Stories We Could Tell: A Mavericks FANCast" Mark Potter, and together they dive into the deeply-felt influence of Elvis's music on Raul Malo, lead singer of the band The Mavericks, famously known as the Grammy-award winning country music band that had their most mainstream success in the 1990s. Gurdip and Justin have discussed and praised Raul and The Mavericks a number of times on TCBCast, particularly on our "Elvis covers" episodes. From Raul's unique insights on "It's Now or Never" and his longstanding love of "Aloha from Hawaii" to The Mavericks' opportunity to collaborate with Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana on the "All the King's Men" album and beyond, Mark and Justin hit on as much as we can! For Song of the Week, Mark selects "Alla En El Rancho Grande," which, although Elvis joked around with in the rehearsals for "That's The Way It Is," quickly reveals itself to have a vast amount of history and alternate versions dating all the way back to Mexican cinema of the 1930s. Then, Justin opts for Elvis's 1961 take on "Judy," originally from 1960 by writer Teddy Redell. If you'd like to hear more of Mark's podcast episodes, which features fan interviews, former band members and deep-dives into The Mavericks' discography and other influences, you can check out "Stories We Could Tell" at https://mavericksfancast.podbean.com/ and on any other major podcast platforms, and follow along at facebook.com/StoriesWeCouldTell If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Carly and I would be eternally grateful as we continue to try to keep our head above water with this thing. Back in March of 2021 Carly and I released Episode #112 of The Troubadour featuring a western swing band that I knew had a boatload of talent. The interview featured Ryan Humbert and Emily Bates of the Ohio based band named The Shootouts. At the time they were promoting their latest record entitled “Bullseye” produced by Chuck Mead. Well, since that time they've been grinding it out on the road and have cut another record called “Stampede” with Ray Benson and Sam Seifert co-producing. “Stampede” features guest performances by Ray, Asleep at the Wheel, Jim Lauderdale, Marty Stuart, Raul Malo and Buddy Miller. Not exactly a bunch of light-weights! Today we're catching up with Shootouts frontman Ryan Humbert to hear all about the new record and their debut performance at The Grand Ole Opry on February 24th, 2023 which just also happened to be the day “Stampede” was released. There're some great conversation in this episode that you won't want to miss so let's get to it! Here comes Episode #174 of The Troubadour and our visit with Ryan Humbert, frontman of the red hot western swing band, The Shootouts.

Do 1963 roku. Jedno z najsłynniejszych, to “Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me”. A muzyka? Muzykę zaczerpnął John z innej piosenki. To kolejny przebój amerykańskiego folku. „Waiting For The Train” Jimmi Rodgers napisał i nagrał w 1929 roku. W tym samym roku Rodgers wystąpił w filmie wyprodukowanym przez Columbia Pictures, w którym śpiewał „Waiting For The Train”. Był to w zasadzie jeden z pierwszych teledysków muzyki counrty. Wracając do korzeni piosenki, pierwowzorem podobno była londyńska ballada z połowy XIX wieku „Standing For The Platform”. Twierdzą, że Rodgers był zainspirowany amerykańską folkową piosenką z końca XIX wieku „I've been Working on the Railroad”. Podobieństwa faktycznie są, więc może… Sail-Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: “Waiting For A Train” (w tle), wyk. Raul Malo, Pat Flynn, Rob Ickes, Dave Pomeroy, muzyka: Jimmy Rodgers „Parostatek” , wyk. According to Paul Deakin, just as he began his drumming career at age 6, he managed to temporarily end the support of his parents by breaking his drumheads right out of the gate. Not long after that, he realized that sports weren't his thing and the only way that he would attract any female attention was to follow in Ringo's footsteps…so he cheerfully recalls. Paul soon began private drum lessons and practiced every day…again challenging his parent's ability to deal with his new-found 'hobby'. He joined his first band at age 15 and quickly learned the difficulty of the music business but never wavered. Paul Deakin studied music at the University of Miami and along with perfecting his drumming skills, also studied mallets and after college, taught music for a bit in Miami. By age 30, Deakin, along with lead singer Raul Malo and bassist Robert Reynolds, formed The Mavericks. The band is now celebrating over 25 years together, have collected Gold and Platinum record awards, and in 1995, were the winner of the Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Deakin has also performed and recorded with other artists including David Mead, Matt King and Jason White. The Mavericks are currently signed to the Big Machine Label Group and are recording and planning tours for the upcoming year.https://www.themavericksband.com/https://www.facebook.com/TheMavericksMusichttps://twitter.com/mavpaul59?lang=enHost - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For Sponsorship Information or Questions - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne
Bad luck and trouble are supposed to be common watchwords on a Friday the 13th but we're not the superstitious kind. Those vintage holdovers from a Christian time gone long past are just reminders of the stinkin' thinkin' that got us to where we are today. We'll be taking our chances with a themed show today that blends vocal nuggets from Frank Sinatra and Elvis with blues from Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ray Charles, and Chester Burnett. We've also got some Jimmy Smith, Raul Malo, Chance Halladay, and Gale Storm to keep you entertained while the rest of the world goes by. Tune us in on your radio at 92.5 FM or, better yet, listen to us anywhere on planet Earth on kowsfm.com/listen. Adopt a black cat. Despite longstanding superstitions, they have the very best of personalities.

The spark of freedom can be seen anywhere if you look for it. In this episode of For Songs-Singles, we bring back Lisset Diaz of the Sweet Lizzy Project (www.sweetlizzyproject.com) to discuss her band's latest single, Dreaming of a Revolution/Otra Revolucion. The song is inspired by the protesters in Cuba, who are putting their lives on the line to protest against the existing regime. The song is the first from their forthcoming album Pirate Radio/Radio Pirata. Every song on the album was recorded in English and Spanish. In this episode, we talk about each version of the song, along with the special editions featuring legendary Cuban singers Carlos Varela (https://twitter.com/noeselfin) and Raul Malo (www.themavericks.com). Lisset details the emotional ride that led to this song and the difficulties in getting the perfect translation from English to Spanish. She also talks about how she drew inspiration from learning that a childhood friend was among the many protestors putting their lives on the line. Freedom is not to be taken for granted, so it is a great honor to welcome Lisset Diaz of the Sweet Lizzy Project back to For Songs.
One listen and it becomes crystal clear that Alyssa Bonagura was born to make music. With a voice that touches somewhere deep inside, Alyssa's soulful sound and powerful lyrics will send you jet-setting into a broad range of human emotions. Growing up on the open roads of America, with her RCA country recording artists parents, Baillie & The Boys, made it impossible for Alyssa not to witness the power and magic of music. At just 3 weeks old, her cradle was the gentle rocking of a tour bus. Her play ground encompassed sound checks at fairs and festivals and back stage dressing rooms at a slew of different venues including the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Award shows, and her “extended family” consisted of managers, promoters, roadies, musicians and other fellow mainstream country artists. At the age of 3, Alyssa performed on the Ralph Emory television show, Nashville Now. Where her version of the Leslie Gore classic; It's My Party brought the house down in front of millions of national viewers. At age 10, one of those major acts, Kenny Rogers, decided Alyssa was the perfect child singer to record a duet with him on his Christmas CD, Christmas From The Heart. By age 13, Alyssa had her first batch of songs written and received an endorsement from Gretsch Guitars. She had figured out her own unique style of guitar playing with open tunings inspired by Joni Mitchell. By age 16 she landed her first 50 date tour opening up for Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives. It soon became obvious that she was the real deal, not only as a musician and singer but as a prolific songwriter as well. While in high-school, Alyssa became a go-to session singer for people like Christian artist Matt Maher, where she created her own layered harmony vocal approach from years of hearing her parents sing together. Her songs started finding their way into television shows, (Switched! on ABC Family, MTV), movies, as well as getting her first cuts on other artists projects. After graduating high school, Alyssa received a full scholarship from Sennheiser to Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts in Liverpool England, where she would spend the next three years earning a degree in Sound Technology while continuing to perform in local venues throughout Europe. While playing at a venue called The Zanzibar in Liverpool, Alyssa was spotted by Liverpool Rock Star Pete Wylie and was asked to join his band playing electric guitar and singing background vocals. Alyssa of course said yes, and experienced what most artists never experience; a private performance requested by the Queen to help support one of Liverpool's local charities. A performance with Ringo Starr at the 800th Anniversary of Liverpool's, “Capital Of Culture 2008” event; a performance slot at one of the UK's largest music festivals; Knowsley Hall on the same bill as The Who, and from there on scored her own slots performing on the Acoustic stage at Glastonbury in 2009, and a UK tour opening for Raul Malo of The Mavericks. While at LIPA, Alyssa was inspired by their music community and the extreme amount of talented people attending the school. She lived in Lennon Studios, an apartment complex that used to be the old maternity ward where John Lennon was born. Her incredibly unique experiences abroad inspired her debut album, The English Diaries, an all acoustic intimate collection of songs she produced and recorded herself in her one bedroom Beatles inspired flat. After graduating LIPA and receiving her diploma from Paul McCartney himself, Alyssa returned to Nashville and signed her first publishing READ MORE AT http://www.alyssabonagura.com/

The Band of Heathens, Sail On, Sailor ⦁ The Band of Heathens feat. Today on INSIGHTS we'll hear from Raul Malo, founding member of The Mavericks, the GRAMMY Award-winning band behind albums like Music For All Occasions, Mono, and most recently En Español, the band's first completely Spanish language album. Raul Malo stopped by to chat with Amy Wright about his life as a first-generation Cuban American, growing up playing in garage bands and dreaming of being a Rolling Stone, his work on the music documentary Havana Time Machine, and much more. Raul Malo from The Mavericks brings forward the stories and the music of their latest collection of songs... “This is the record I’ve been wanting the Mavericks to make for a very long time. I’m a first generation Cuban-American, and some of these songs are songs my family would play and sing on weekends at family parties and get-togethers. But it’s not all nostalgia either. There are plenty of new original songs that put this record squarely in the moment for us.” - Raul Malo of The Mavericks

Every musician sacrifices something to do what they do. For most, it's money. I mean, unless you're already a huge star, the chances of making money in this industry is slim to none. But few artists have sacrificed quite as much as Lisset Diaz and her rock-and-roll band, the Sweet Lizzy Projec (https://www.sweetlizzyproject.com/)t. Lisset and her bandmates emigrated to Nashville from Havana, Cuba, in 2017. So even before the pandemic, going back home was no easy task. They came here to make a new album after being featured in a PBS special called “Havana Time Machine.” Recording Technicolor took longer than expected, and the band waited for the perfect time to release it—February 2020. We all know what happened next. On this episode of For Songs, Lisset discusses three songs from Technicolor—“Turn Up the Radio,” “Tu Libertad,” and “December 31”—and the band's newest single, “Sticky Situations.” She discusses the sacrifices it took to get here, the differences of recording in the US and Cuba, and the frustration of not being able to tour in support of their new album. Lisset also talks about the band's new EP, a collection of Christmas songs, released in late November 2020. So settle in and turn up the radio!
No way could this happen today. There once was a band from Miami that got signed to a major label country record deal - on the history making MCA Records, circa 1992. And not only did this eclectic quartet serve up a debut album infused with Tex Mex, Latin, R&B and Bakersfield country music, its title track From Hell To Paradise, was a political song about the plight of Cubans struggling to make the 90 mile trip from a life of limits to one of infinite possibilities. The singer and writer of that song - still the leader and commanding voice of The Mavericks 25 years later - is Raul Malo. And he knows this story because it's his family story. Malo's parents emigrated from Cuba shortly before he was born in 1965. While Malo has only visited the country once briefly, Cuba's culture and of course its spectacular music is part of his soul. And he's going back there this spring. That's central to our conversation in this hour. Also, Part 2 of the series Music, Money & Metadata - The Promise of The Blockchain. And a short catch up with Amy Ray about the Indigo Girls upcoming tour with Joan Baez and Mary Chapin-Carpenter.
Self-described ‘life-long advocate of simplicity' and Canadian Americana singer/songwriter Whitney Rose joins me at a Mexican restaurant in Nashville to talk about 80s country icon Keith Whitley's posthumously released Greatest Hits album. Whitney reveals how her childhood love for Whitney helped foster her love for country music, why some of his songs make more emotional than logical sense, her passion for simplicity in life and music and how the album helped her bond with Mavericks frontman (and her producer) Raul Malo.
