Hi everyone!I'm really thrilled to announce that my guest this week is Gavin Rossdale from BUSH!With over a billion streams, 20 million albums sold, and continued sold-out shows around the world in iconic venues and massive arenas, BUSH has truly earned their place in rock history. Since their explosive debut back in 1994 with Sixteen Stone—which sold six million copies and gave us iconic pop classics like “Comedown,” “Machinehead,” and “Glycerine”—they've been unstoppable. Their follow-up, Razorblade Suitcase, produced by Steve Albini, hit #1 on the Billboard charts and went triple platinum, with the single “Swallowed” topping the charts too. Over the years, BUSH has racked up an incredible 23 consecutive Top 40 hits on the Modern and Mainstream Rock charts—six of which hit #1!We kick things off chatting about what fans can expect from BUSH's current tour across Canada, the US, and Europe—and having just seen them live, I can vouch the show is packed with wall-to-wall hits and stage energy that's off the charts! From there, Gavin shares his love for life on the road and what it means to still have such a powerful connection with fans after all these years. We then dive into BUSH's upcoming album, I Beat Loneliness, which explores themes of mental health and personal growth—something Gavin talks about with real honesty and insight. We shift gears to talk about the current rock scene, his passion for tennis, and how his brand new cooking show, Dinner with Gavin, came together.Enjoy as I also feature the current single “60 Ways to Forget People” along with clips from some earlier albums. UP NEXT -Ian Thomas! He's a Juno Award-winning singer, songwriter, film composer, author, and actor. I dive into his incredible career, starting with his 1973 debut album Ian Thomas, which gave us the classic hit Painted Ladies. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this epiosde, I spoke with Lawrence V. Drake regarding his latest book "Pilots and Painted Ladies: 493rd Bomb Squadron and the Air War in the CBI". Raised on a farm in Montana, Vernon Drake enlisted in the Army Air Corp in the spring of 1942. Assigned to the 493rd Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Group of the 10th Air Force stationed in India, he piloted B-24 bombers into Burma in a fight to prevent the Japanese from advancing north to China, then flew C-108 gas-hauling tankers across the formidable Himalayas to support the U.S. and Allied armies.
Singer/Songwriter Ian Thomas talks about his biggest hit Painted Ladies (and why he no longer possesses his 1974 Juno as Most Promising Male Vocalist), his continued close ties to both his big brother Dave and his wider SCTV/Second City family, his cameo on Bob & Doug McKenzie's Great White North, touring with April Wine/Rush/Valdy/Beach Boys/Billy Joel, why everyone was told to ‘check their egos at the door' while recording 1985's Tears Are Not Enough, his interactions with Martin Short/John Candy/Rick Moranis/Eugene Levy/Paul Shaffer/Geddy Lee/Rik Emmett/Tony Bennett/Brian Wilson, having his songs covered by Santana/Manfred Mann/Anne Murray, and why that strange animal Gowan now owns some of his recording gear! Ian Thomas will be LIVE on Wed April 9th at The Rose Studio inside The Rose Brampton as part of their Stagedoor Stories series...full info at https://tickets.brampton.ca/ For everything Ian Thomas, please visit https://ianthomas.ca/ TORONTO LEGENDS is hosted by Andrew Applebaum at andrew.applebaum@gmail.com All episodes available at https://www.torontolegends.ca/episodes/ Learn more about your ad choices. S9:E11 – We took a break from the wilderness and decided to take Maggie, our golden doodle, to explore a different kind of National Park: the Golden Gate Bridge and Presidio of San Francisco. We couldn't pass up a chance to see the Palace of Fine Arts and grab some grub at Pier 39. Before exploring more of the city, Maggie got to lay her eyes on Sea Lions for the first time. (She was not a fan.) Meanwhile, Hilarie got to live her childhood dream of searching for Uncle Jessie outside the Painted Ladies houses, where Full House sitcom was filmed. “Whatever happened to predictability?...” To get the full picture, check out the video that accompanies this podcast (S9:E11 Dog-Friendly Day in the Bay | Maggie Moodle Gets a San Francisco Treat
Love is in the air this week as Jennie and Dianne share the story of a woman who led, shall we say, an alternative life as madam Bessie Rivers, and despite her unconventional path, found love and respect among many in her community and her final resting place has not been forgotten in lovely Greenmount Cemetery in Durango, Colorado. Situated in the southwestern part of Colorado, Durango is surrounded by the rugged San Juan Mountains and boasts a well-preserved historic district with Victorian architecture, reflecting its mining and railroad past; a past whose Ordinary Extraordinary story would not be complete without the generosity, compassion, tenacity, and ingenuity of madam Bessie Rivers. To view this episode on YouTube, click here: https://youtu.be/L8A3_OR-_SI?si=ljcXa52NKKceihUdResources used to research this episode include:, City Of Durango. Soiled Doves and Painted Ladies is the story of California prostitution beginning in the chaotic word of the California gold rush and is firmly entrenched in the history of the state. This book outlines the story of sex workers in the golden west, from gold rush to the golden age of Hollywood. It outlines some of the most notable madams and courtesans that dot the history of the state. The nature of the "Oldest Profession" was one of vacillating strong emotions, both good and bad, and world renowned ghost hunter and historian, Richard Senate says that there are many ghost stories linked to brothels both historically modern times. From the Gold Rush days to Hollywood's Golden Era, Richard has some great stories to tell from prostitutes who made a name from themselves and went down in history and celebrities that have made a name for themselves who began as ladies of the night. So listen in. It was a very interesting hour of history and hauntings
In this episode of The Walrus Was Paul, veteran session drummer Barry Keane talks with host Paul Romanuk about an album he loves and the memories that go with it - the 1964 North American release by The Beatles, Something New. Barry also talks about his amazing career and being on the drum kit with Gordon Lightfoot for over 40 years. You can read Barry Keane's full bio right here.SHOW NOTESHere is the cover of the Something New album. It was taken during the recording of one of the Ed Sullivan episodes The Beatles performed on. We also talk about the "hype copy" on the back of the album. Classic 1960s North American stuff. We also talk about Dave Dexter Jr., the 1960s Capitol Records, North America, executive who was primarily responsible for the "Frankenstein-ing" of The Beatles UK catalogue for US release. You can read more about that here. There is also a fascinating discussion on the well respected Steve Hoffman Music Forum about whether Dexter deserves credit or derision for his work on those North American Beatles records.Barry has played on many big hits during his drumming career. He mentions Canadian singer/songwriter Ian Thomas and his 1973 hit Painted Ladies. The record charted in both Canada and the US. Here is the song, with Barry on the skins....
With such a depletion of wildlife in the UK alone, with so many schools, cities, towns, and housing estates being built so far removed from our natural world how on earth does the next generation stand a chance to learn about the natural world and be sympathetic to it? At the same time, we also are demanding literally the earth from our natural world, and the way we extract from the natural world is getting more intensive and damaging. As we move further away from it how do we fill that nature gap in society? We speak with Environmentalist, Producer and Writer Mary Colwell who has campaigned and devised a NEW Natural History GCSE designed to help bridge this chasm, helping put nature and the wonderment and fascination of nature into education. “Nature is for everyone, it is there for YOU to engage with, that's why putting it into the school system is important, making it open access and free to all, for everyone to engage with. We know from the COPs recently that we are looking at a very difficult time ahead, and those young people will have to live in this difficult time, and if they are going to make the right decisions for themselves, people and the planet, they need to be more knowledgeable, more engaged and more connected to this planet we live on.” Research by Miles Richardson of the University of Derby's Nature Connectedness Research department has shown that by the time children reach secondary school, there is a marked drop off in connection to the natural world. It happens at around 13, it gets crowded out, school gets very academic, and nature is side-lined, squashed into Biology, and then it's only picked up again when we are 30. With 80% of us in the UK living in urban environments that means only 20% of us live in anything you can call countryside. We have shifted our cultural attitudes, our language, everything has shifted away from nature. All this is creating a perfect storm of disassociation and lack of emotional response and emotional intelligence when it comes to dealing with the natural world. Up until now, through the current education system, we are handing over to the next generation a fractured view of nature. We live in this disassociation, we are just taking what we want, and it's not even much to pay. This is what we are passing on to the next generation and it must stop. One of the beautiful things about Biophilic Design is that it brings nature and nature-inspired design right under the noses of everyone, it reconnects us to nature. How wonderful would it be, if alongside, the next generation learns how to identify, study, record and monitor the natural world, understanding how habitats make the nature of Britain: how the animals, plants and birds that we live with thrive, that they learn what its job is, how for instance how an Oak Tree fixes the soil, provides habitats, how it interacts with us. We are all part of the same thing, the outside world, we are nature, we are one. The Disgupta review emphasised the importance of learning about biodiversity and ecology at all levels of education. I interviewed Dom Higgins Health and Education director for the Wildlife Trusts, a few weeks back and I was really thrilled to learn that Mary has campaigned and designed this new Natural History GCSE. “We need a nature-literate, engaged, and eco-sensitive generation, we need to start helping fill that gap”. It's showing up in our culture as well. In literature We use a lot fewer nature words in use of nature fiction poetry song lyrics since the 50s, use of personal pronouns, me, my, mine, has increased by 50% in the language we use on a day-to-day basis, we have become more inward and individualistic and a lot less community and open to the natural world. Nature is everything hopefully it will encourage a general greening in the curriculum. Let's change that, through design, through education, through inspiration. In this podcast you'll also learn some interesting facts to tell your friends: Did you know Cabbage White butterflies, migrate over the North Sea. We also see an influx of Painted Ladies from Europe, “I think it's wonderful to imagine a whole host of Orange butterflies come skipping their way here over the grey North Sea.” A swift never lands unless it comes into nest to breed, drink, eats, mates on the wing, rides out the storms and tempests of the planet and only lands to have its babies. And how about the Curlew, with their most haunting and bubbling call? Did you know it can dip its bill into soft soil, the end of which moves? It acts like a pair of pincers, it feels around. It's called rhinokinesis. The end of its bill opens independently, like a great pair of tweezers with a sensitive tip helping the bird find food on the water shore. “Your Biophilic Design magazine is important, we need to be inspired by nature to help us live full and fascinating and very beautiful lives, that's really important because we mustn't give the impression that the future is all about hairshirts, and not doing anything, not eating this and not going there. It's not about that, it's reorientating our desires and wonder towards what enhances all of life not just our own, that's why I think your magazine is really really important, and the fact that it's beautiful is really important as well.” (thank you Mary, ed.!) We also discuss how schools should be designed. Full of flowers, and moth traps, when children go outside, let's not have them just sit on concrete, but why not help them experience seasons and nature? Let's reignite that childlike wonder and help them enjoy and learn that sitting on the grass has something beautiful to show them, something intriguing in it. The earth has so many menageries of wonder. Why not on a city level, as they walk to school, how about nature following them right up to the school door? It is essential that we are linked emotionally to nature as well as data collectors.Mary calls on the best designers to think about school settings. That all that grey and concrete and hardness we often see in schools changes our state of mind, and this must affect kids at school. So, this podcast is a call for designers to bring opportunities for biodiversity and also a spark of inspiration that everybody can do something… “every single person on this planet can do something, through what you buy, getting a bit more educated about things, or supporting organisations. On a personal level, just pick one thing and love it… because everything is connected to everything else… give it your all, care of it, campaign it, promote it, draw it, raise awareness, get engaged on an emotional level and you will be amazed at who comes to stand by your side.” To find out more about Mary visit www.curlewmedia.com https://www.curlewaction.org/natural-history-gcse/ mary@curlewmedia.comBuy her new book, The Gathering Place, Bloomsbury Publishing, April 2023https://uk.bookshop.org/a/6777/9781399400541 Other books by MaryJohn Muir (fabulous book!) https://uk.bookshop.org/a/6777/9780745956664Curlew Moon (just love the title) https://uk.bookshop.org/a/6777/9780008241070Tooth, Beak and Claw (a must read for all nature lovers) https://uk.bookshop.org/a/6777/9780008354794Credits: with thanks to George Harvey Audio Production for the calming biophilic soundscape that backs all our podcasts. Nancy is reporting from San Francisco, because your roving journos go where the story leads, whether that's a discount motel room in Fairfax, Virginia, or a 30-room mansion with a view of the Painted Ladies. First order of business is not The Verdict, but Teal Swan and recent episodes of Hulu series The Deep End, whose jaw-dropping scenes of alternate therapy have pushed Sarah from her neutrality. Embedding trauma in your lost followers is dangerous stuff. By the way, Sarah and Nancy agree you can use your sex appeal for the greater good, but that ain't what Teal Swan is doing. Now for That Verdict. How does a trial change when it has a jury? How could Heard's statement that she was “a public figure representing domestic abuse” be defamatory? Is this verdict “chilling,” as legacy media claims, or a “major victory” as Depp supporters believe? What if it's neither? Discussed: blackout drinking, revelations of the Depp-Heard therapy sessions, and why the ACLU is not covering itself in glory.Various and sundry: Sarah can't ID one Gary Cooper movie; Nancy doesn't grock what Sarah means when she asks about Maverick. Sarah finds social psychologist Jonathan Haidt's voice “fundamentally soothing”; teenage Nancy runs into Paul Newman. “PAINTED LADIES” are featuring on the podcast this week. They originate from Studio 311, in Winnipeg's Historic Exchange District. This building is a grand old dame who was part of the exponential growth of Winnipeg at the turn of the 20th century. Winnipeg has her own identity despite being known then as both the gateway to the West and the Chicago of the North. This neighbourhood with its historically preserved warehouses, stars in their own right, have shared billing with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” was filmed just outside our windows and transformed 2007 into the wild west virtually overnight. I introduce you to my habit of rescuing Australiana and the transformation of a brittle bundle of sticks into a cheeky and energetic still life that marked the end of a chapter. We learn that not everything is for sale and that art can just as easily be a gift to ourselves. To see a visual of

Artists such as America, Santana, Bette Midler and even Jon Bon Jovi have covered his songs. In this extensive interview with Dan Hare Ian talks about: his days working at CBC radio; the many aspects of recording, producing and engineering records; his expansive catalogue; jingle work, "looping" John Cleese and voicing the character of Snap from the Rice Krispies Commercials; composing film scores; his success with The Boomers; the thrill of live performing with 'Lunch At Allen's, and so much more.
For this month's bonus episode we bring you the audio from our recent live stream 'Around The World In 80 Fails' as we visit the eight major cities from Jules Verne's novel and dispense ten facts for each as well as setting a treasure hunt for you to crack! The clues are below, followed by the answers and explanations if you want to have a go at it yourself with the prize being mere pride and smugness and not, as in Phileas Fogg's case, £20,000. To solve them, use a mix of what we say in the podcast, some judicious internet research and a bit of Google Maps! Each clue’s answer is found in the city in which it is given in and each answer is a 1 or 2 digit number which help solve the final clue. CLUES: 1 - LONDON: Inside a triangle between Fogg’s home, Doyle’s detective’s domicile, and the bronze memorial to Verne’s translation topper, find a circular quadrilateral and the blue plaque at the residence of a premier liberal. 2 - SUEZ: From the octagonal beacon, move towards Nemo’s sub’s nuclear namesake’s pole. Running east to west above the Friends-y café you’ll find a Fat Fucker’s revolutionary street. Add the digits. 3 - MUMBAI: Across the Back from the formerly cardboard arch lies a Babylonian Wonder. Walk its southern path to the stone shelter and find the blue Zone opposite. 4 - KOLKATA: Just over halfway between the Bollywood Godfather’s place of worship and the Vidyasagar Setu, get out of this world then look just south for a holy seat and count the apostle’s supposed epistles. 5 - HONG KONG: Follow the aim of the midday munition just across the water to a stellar street. At its eastern-most end pick the eastern-most spot by a Melville-inspired coffeehouse where The cinematic Dragon stands and take the first digit of his age at time of death. 6 - YOKOHAMA: From the former foremost ferris, follow the road eastwards, over the bridge - then south of the pachyderm’s nose to an arena. Add the individual digits in the left or right corner of the scoreboard. 7 - SAN FRANCISCO: From where The Rock Islanders played, fly south-ish - but before Archimedes’ exclamation pause at the Vanessa Cardui, and visit the park with shades of Davy Crockett. Find the most storey-ed building on its western side, add the second and third digits and multiply by half the first digit. 8 - NEW YORK: From the island of Elizabeth Jane Cochran’s asylum, follow Paul and Art’s cantilever northwest to the fountain of her circumnavigatory sponsor. Its adjacent avenue is your final number. FINAL CLUE: Translate these numbers. Your team name is the final clue and final answer. Doyle's Detective's Domicile is 221b Baker Street (home of Arthurs Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes), and Barry also mentioned that Jules Verne is the second-most translated writer on Earth after Agatha Christie, who has a memorial in Leicester Square. If you draw a triangle between these 3 points, in the middle of this triangle is Cavendish Square - a rather circular square - where there is a blue plaque on Number 20 which is the home of Herbert Asquith, the former Liberal Prime Minister. 2: 5Ben told us about the lighthouse in Port Said, which is octagonal. 'Towards Nemo's sub's nuclear namesake's pole' requires a bit of Googling. Captain Nemo is a Jules Verne character whose submarine was called the Nautilus. There was a real-life nuclear submarine called the Nautilus which was the first to travel under the North Pole. Travelling north from the lighthouse in Port Said you come to a café called Central Perk (like the café in Friends) which is on an east-to-west street called 23rd July St. 23rd July was the date of the Egyptian coup in 1952 as part of Operation 'Fat Fucker', the CIA's plan to eject King Farouk. Add 2 and 3 and you get 5! 3: 1 Ben mentioned that Mumbai's 'Gateway to India' wasn't ready when a royal visit took place in 1911 and so a cardboard replica stood in its place. Looking at Google Maps of Mumbai, the bay just to the west of where the Gateway stands is called Back Bay and on the other side of the bay from the Gateway is a park called Hanging Gardens (the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World). If you go into street view and walk along the southern path of the park, in the southeastern corner is a stone shelter which has a blue sign reading Zone 1 across from it. 4: 13 Barry talked about Amitabh Bachchan, the famed Bollywood actor whose roles included the title figure of Sarkar in the Bollywood version of The Godfather. Barry also mentioned that Bachchan is worshipped in a temple in Kolkata (which is located in the All Bengal Amitabh Bachchan Fans' Association building). The Vidyasagar Setu is the name of the Second Hooghly Bridge. Draw a line from the temple towards the bridge and just over halfway you come to a planetarium ("out of this world") - south of which is St. Paul's Cathedral, the seat of the Anglican diocese of Kolkata. St Paul the apostle is supposed to have written 13 epistles in the New Testament. 5: 3 Ben told us about the Noon Day Gun in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. The photos of it all show that it points straight out across the bay, just on the other side of which is Avenue Of Stars. At the eastern end of the avenue is a Starbucks - and any of you who recently heard of Coffee episode will know that Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick' includes the character of Starbuck. The Dragon was film star Bruce Lee's name and sure enough he has a statue standing just outside that Starbucks. He died aged 3, so take the 3 from his age. 6: 12 Barry talked about Cosmo Clock 21, at one point the world's tallest Ferris wheel at 107m. Follow the road on Google maps east from there and it crosses a bridge by Elephant Nose Park. Look south from there and you find Yokohama Stadium. Into street view, you can look at the scoreboard where the bottom corners both show 10.29. Add the individual digits: 1+2+9 = 12! 7: 21 Ben talked about Al Capone's time playing in an Alcatraz inmate band called the Rock Islanders. Quite a way south of there is an area called Eureka Valley - Archimedes famously shouted Eureka! in his bath. Before you get there you can find a series of buildings called The Painted Ladies - painted lady is a type of butterfly whose Latin name is Vanessa Cardui. Just beside these buildings on the map is Alama Park, and Davy Crockett famously died in the Battle of the Alamo. On the west side of the park - Scott Street - the tallest building is a white apartment block, number 625. 2+5 (the second and third digits) = 7, multiplied by 3 (half the first digit) = 21. 8: 5Right at the start of the podcast, Barry mentioned the pioneering journalist Nellie Bly, whose real name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran. She spent time undercover in an asylum on Blackwell Island - which has since been renamed Roosevelt Island, the very first stop on our NYC tour! Paul (Simon) and Art (Garfunkel) sang about the 59th Street Bridge, the other name of the Ed Koch Queensboro, a cantilever bridge running northwest off Roosevelt Island. Continue along 59th Street and you come to the southeastern corner of Central Park where the Pulitzer Fountain sits - Joseph Pulitzer sponsored Nellie Bly's trip around the world. It is adjacent to 5th Avenue. FINAL CLUE ANSWER: TEAM CLUE This is a straightforward enough clue that you have a number-letter cipher - turn the 8 numbers into letters of the alphabet and you have your final answer: TEAM CLUE.

Thanks for tuning in as we discuss four female artists from the past and present. Today we are going to tell the stories of these four inspiring women: Harriet Cany Peale, Sarah Freeman Clarke, Mary Cassatt, and Lorna Simpson. Harriet Cany Peale is our most historic artist, being born in 1799, in Philadelphia. Married to Rembrandt Peale as his second wife, Harriet didn’t stop painting when she wed as most women were expected to do at the time. Her work was exhibited for most of her career and can still be found in galleries like the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Schwarz Gallery and many more.Sarah Freeman Clarke was a creative of many types. Born in Boston in 1840, she painted, illustrated, wrote poetry, sketched, and frequently traveled. There is a Facebook group, Old Marietta, that highlights vintage photos of Marietta, Georgia, where Sarah settled down for a time. The page has spotlighted Sarah numerous times. She knew how to network and had friends in high places like Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Sarah’s connection to Emerson influenced her work and style. She traveled to the Great Lakes with Margaret Fuller, sketching and painting landscapes along the route. This became part of Fuller’s Summer on the Lakes collection of poetry, art, dialogues, anecdotes and more. Sarah had accumulated thousands of books throughout her years of travel and opened a catalogue of her books to lend out. Eventually her catalogue merged with the Marietta Library Association and today it is part of the 16 branch Cobb Library System as the Clarke Library. Editor's note: When Kate mentions a president who died after eating too many cucumbers and being cut open, she said William McKinley, but we later learned it was Zachary Taylor. Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born in Boston in 1840, as the daughter of two real estate and investment brokers. The high status she was born into led to many early opportunities to travel and explore artistry. Although women were discouraged from pursuing careers, she enrolled in the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts at 16 years old. She ended up quitting the program to move to Paris after realizing the courses were slow and inadequate. Her portrait titled The Mandoline Player was selected for display by Paris Milan, an exclusive annual exhibition organized by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Finally, we discuss modern artist Lorna Simpson who continues to produce art. Lorna’s style and choice of mediums has evolved over the course of her career. She has drawn, painted, photographed and sculpted hundreds of works of art in her lifetime already. As a pioneering feminist, her work raises questions about the nature of representation, identity, gender, race and history. Listen in for her full story! For the first time since we started the podcast, we're plugging ourselves! Kate's mom, Cynthia Mollenkopf, is an artist with work displayed at the Cocoon Gallery in Apex, NC. Kate is a pastry master and you can find her on Instagram @cococake15. Natasha paints and such and her Instagram is @artbynatashahope Thanks for supporting us and this podcast! Enjoy and see you next time!
Host Wil Fulton dives deep into the small, picturesque town of Astoria, Oregon, where hundreds of thousands of "movie tourists" have turned landmarks from the Goonies into bona fide attractions, much to the chagrin of the woman who currently occupies the iconic home featured in the film; Thrillist Staff Writer Emma Stefansky interviews two Pennsylvania real estate agents tasked with selling an infamously creepy house from Silence of the Lambs; Producer Mia Faske wonders "who actually lives in San Francisco's legendary Painted Ladies?" and then finds someone who actually does. There's been a little delay on the first episode of 2019... but it's worth it. One word - ZUZU We couldn't believe our luck when ZUZU said she had a day off her busy schedule to come and talk to her "Noisey Neighbours". We start with an immediate tangent and talk about all our christmas vacations which mainly consisted of us all playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Once we got down the music, we began with ZUZU coming off her recent tour with 'The Courteeners' and 'Gerry Cinnamon'. Discussing what it's like as a support act and crowd interactions! We also discuss 'Distant Christmas' with Zu and discover that she used to be an elf! Moving onto music beginnings in general. From picking up a guitar and sending a letter to signing and singles. We top off the music chat by discussing the entire creative process ZUZU takes. From writing to production to sending to the label. As usual we go off topic and this week bring up the following; Elton John, Diana Ross, Painted Ladies, Red Dead 2, Elfing and Space. Wilson brings out the big guns this week as we play for 'Spaceship or Spaceshit'. See who wins?! Her travel passions include all things Disney as well as air travel, even in spite of her constant battles with the TSA over her toddler's juice box. Leslie is a former attorney and mother of two children, ages 8 and 3. She's originally from Alabama but now calls the San Francisco Bay Area home. Follow Leslie on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Google +. TIPS FOR EXPLORING SAN FRANCISCO WITH KIDS You need at least three days to visit San Francisco and you can easily spend up to a week. Must see sites in San Francisco include: Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Ferry Building, Pier 39, Alamo Square (with the Painted Ladies from Full House), Golden Gate Park, Walt Disney Family Museum, and Chinatown You must book tickets for the boat to Alcatraz in advance Pier 39 (where the sea lions are) / Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy so it is worth a visit but don't plan on spending all your time there The Aquarium by the Bay is a great way to learn about the local ecosystem If you drive, get an app to find parking but it would be best to leave the car at home and use public transportation To get from the airport, you can take a BART train to Union Square but if you are staying elsewhere, you may want to take an Uber or Lyft. It is about a 30-minute drive without too much traffic. Use public transportation in the city and if you want to get out of the city, you can rent a car for the day from an office in the system The cable car is used as a tourist attraction and not as much for reliable transportation Summer is the foggiest but September is the sunniest and warmest so fall is the best time to come. Winter is the rainy season. Best day trips from San Francisco include Sonoma or Napa, Muir Woods, Monterey, or the East Bay like Oakland Disneyland is a 5-6 hour drive from San Francisco Hotels are centered in Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. Union Square is more centrally located. You need to watch the convention schedule because when large conventions come into town hotels sell out and are extremely expensive (check the Moscone Convention Center schedule). The Westin St. Francis is expensive but you can find deals if you travel off peak. The Fairmont on top Nob Hill is also great with a fun tiki bar. If you use Airbnb, be careful about what neighborhood you choose. Check the San Francisco Chronicle's top 100 restaurant list for fine dining options. Good dining options for kids: Yank Sing dim sum Burritos in the Mission District Ethnic food Food trucks (Off the Grid has pop up locations) There are many free things to do in San Francisco Do the math on CityPass or GoCard to see if it will pay for itself Using the sharing economy (Uber, Lyft, etc) to save money Limit how many museums you do as they are expensive Be prepared that you may need to walk a lot of hills and plan your route accordingly BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Take a photo with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background from the scenic overlook across the bridge (if you head north to Sausalito) Another great spot to take a family photo would be at the Chinatown Gate, in Alamo Park, or at the corner of Haight & Ashbury FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Leslie wears a pair of black Mary Jane-style Crocs when she visits San Francisco. Just don't wear sneakers or you will look like a tourist. TIP OF THE WEEK The fog in San Francisco makes it feel much colder than you think it will be. Be sure to bring a raincoat but also something thicker and dress in layers. Luke Daniel Peacock: Kicking off his career on keys and guitar in the critically-acclaimed Brisbane group Halfway, Luke Daniel Peacock has since become a prolific songwriter in his own right. In 2014, he was the driving creative force for the groundbreaking project, The Painted Ladies, a group that revived the lost songs of Vic Simms in an album titled ‘The Painted Ladies Play Selections From The Loner’. This collaboration was produced by Rusty Hopkinson from You Am I and featured The Medics, Paul Kelly, Ed Kuepper (The Saints/The Laughing Clowns), Ian Haug (The Church/Powderfinger), John Willsteed (The Go-Betweens), Phil Noy & Eugene Ball (The Bamboos), Bunna Lawrie (Coloured Stone) and many more. In February 2016, he released his first solo album titled ‘We’ve Come A Long Way Darling’ to much praise, including a Queensland Music Award for his song ‘Fruits Of Our Labour’, as well as receiving the prestigious Billy Thorpe Scholarship Award in 2016. His work sounds like a modern day Australian version of Bruce Springsteen, and he’s well on his way to becoming a legendary artist in his own right. Recorded live at the HOME showcase at the BIGSOUND Festival on the 7th of September 2016. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. Jonathan Boulet: Coming from Sydney, Jonathan Boulet released his self titled debut solo album in 2009 through Modular Recordings. His debut record was written, recorded, played and produced by himself in his small garage studio. The album was released to much praise and earned him a spot on the Splendour In The Grass lineup in 2010. His second album ‘We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart’ was released in 2012 which further solidified his ability to write catchy, high energy indie pop. After playing a string of international shows and showcases at SXSW, Jonathan took a year off in Berlin to work on new music. What emerged in 2014 was a radically different beast from his previous work. Now signed to Popfrenzy Records, his latest album Gubba is nothing but rock n roll with big drums, face melting guitars, and heavy thumping bass lines. Recorded live at The Triffid, Brisbane, on the 6th November 2015. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 25th September 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
