When we have talked about British painter and muralist Lucy McLauchlan over the years, we have used descriptors like spontaneous and natural, organic and natural. She transformed almost room and building sized brushstrokes, often in black and white, as extensions of her being and adapting to the surfaces she paints on. She may have been part of the street art scene, but she was channeling environmentalism in the process. Recently part of Mural Fest Kosovo, curated by Radio Juxtapoz's own Doug Gillen, he sat down with Lucy for a rare interview about her process and career, her work in Ferizaj, Kosovo and the future of her practice. The conservative fundamentalist nightmare of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale has become a go-to analogy for liberals when criticising the right. Just recently Labour's Megan Woods accused National (via a tweeted GIF) of wanting to turn New Zealand into Gilead if they excluded contraceptives from their prescription subsidy scheme. It's not the only book to be co-opted as a political weapon. Orwell's 1984 and P D James' Children of Men have been used in similar ways by politicians of varying colours.

In this episode, Mythily talks to Anne Galloway and Laura McLauchlan. Anne is a former academic and current farm witch who, in both roles, has spent a weird amount of time getting to know sheep. Laura is a multispecies anthropologist at the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW and lectures with the UNSW Environment and Society group. Anne and Laura are also, it must be said, dear friends. As they speak of friendship, policy, care, death, and killing, anthropology emerges as a way into practices and relations that could maybe (we hope) inform a ‘better world'. Anne and Laura are both deeply invested—through their entanglements with sheep and farmers (Anne), hedgehogs and ecological conservation workers (Laura)—in understanding what sophisticated practices of love, kindness and friendship look like. So we talk through the sticky and unruly nature of lived ethics; of what it means to dislike with respect. Or, to kill with love. And also, of choosing to walk away from academia. This episode was produced by Mythily Meher, with editing and production support from Tim Neale and Matt Barlow. Mythily lives and works in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we recognise Māori in Aotearoa as tangata whenua (people born of the whenua [land/placenta]), whose right to sovereignty here is inalienable. Conversations in Anthropology is made in partnership with the American Anthropological Association and with support from the Australian Anthropological Society. Works mentioned: ‘Lively Collaborations: Feminist Reading Group Erotics for Liveable Futures' by Laura McLauchlan (in Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy) ‘The Mushroom at the End of the World' by Anna Tsing ‘Power in the Helping Professions' by Adolf Guggenbühl-Craig Also, more generally, the expansive works of Deb Bird Rose, and Maria La Puig Bellacasa

Victorian Stalwarts, Chad Mclauchlan, and Tim Edwards have been entrenched in the grassroots level of longboarding for the past 15 + years in Victoria, particularly on the West Coast (Bellarine Peninsula). Since meeting at a club comp both have forged a strong surfing friendship that sees them both inspiring each other and the broader surfing community around them. Coming from quite different surfing backgrounds Chad and Tim find themselves predominantly riding single fins and Oldmals nowadays, both talk to us about the current longboard culture in Victoria, its influential characters, recent local history, and where the future is potentially headed. For many years both have been Nettleton surfboard ambassadors and by looking at the boards they ride and how they surf them, it's clear that both have been influenced by different people and different board designs. Chad and Tim continue to compete in Victoria and both enjoy heading up the east coast of Australia doing the occasional competitions but often haunting the normal longboard meccas of Noosa and Crescent. Long labeled the freezing and sleepy state for Longboarding, the boys shed light and warmth on the healthy longboard community down there in Vic. Tim is the current over 40 Logger State Champion and Over 45 Victorian Old Mal Champion, whilst Chad is the current Runner Up Under 40 Logger State Champion and finalist in many Oldmal events.

#78: We are all on our own journeys, doing things in our own way. But your personal journey doesn't mean you have to be a lone wolf trying to do it all by yourself. Today's episode is about the importance of a vibrant inner circle. My guest is Cara McLauchlan. She is a writer and an encourager (you will find that that is so true). She will tell you, not only how to create your circle, but explain how important these have been in her own life and how allowing these helpers and guides into your life will reflect and remind you of your best self. There is so much help out there for you. You only need to put out the alert, allow help to find you, and let it in. Don't limit your life because you lack belief in your abilities. With the power and strength of your huddle, you can do and be so much more than you thought!Show notes can be found at:howtolife.com/078

It is because of you that I release this show almost every week. But I want to let you know about a big change this coming to the Song Hengers on Patreon. I started Song Henge in 2006. It was a way to support the podcast when amazing services like Patreon were not available. I sent Song Hengers an album per month of free MP3s from some of the artists on the show. I released 168 of those albums over the past 15 years thanks to the generosity of the musicians on this show. When I started the Patreon page, I continued that feature for everyone who pledged $5 or more per episode. There are over 60 albums currently available for Patrons. However, the world seems to be moving away from MP3s. So I decided to discontinue that service at the end of this year. It's time for a change. I still want something special for Song Hengers. That has finally come. Starting in August, Song Hengers will get a talk-free episode, much like the Sleepytime episode that was released in May. I'll introduce the show, you can listen to the music straight through for about an hour, then I'll remind listeners to look up the artists. Each episode will also include complete shownotes and chapters so you can easily skip around to the artists you enjoy, just like regular episodes. Because I DO want you to keep visiting these artists. But it'll be much more music focused. You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com.
