Nattering E Trades #6: Trades Involving Draft Picks Part 1 Eli & Philip

What up world it's your boy E coming at you from the Nattering With E studios. After a brief break to battle off a bout with laryngitis, we are back with our next NFL chapter of Nattering E Trades! Earlier this week, the NBA not the NFL had one of the most intriguing trades we'll probably go back and look at in a couple of years from now. No active players were traded between the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz, only draft picks. The Jazz traded three first-round draft picks this year, the 2027 and 2029 drafts for Phoenix's unprotected 2031 first-round pick. The deal wasn't unprecedented but signaled to the rest of the league that the Suns are probably looking to pull off a bigger deal later. So you might wonder, what does this have to do with the NFL? Well, I'm glad you asked, as today in part 1 of a 6 part series we'll be looking at the three best trades to involve draft picks in the NFL. In three weeks we'll be looking at the three worst draft pick-related trades in NFL History. TOP 3 TRADES Involving Draft Picks The Best: Number 3 Eli for Philip 3. The year is 2004 and after having bad seasons in 2003, the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers pull off a trade that essentially allows each to acquire picks that'll eventually turn out to be two hall of fame caliber quarterbacks. The San Diego Chargers had the first overall pick in the 2004 draft and took Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning the younger brother of Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos great Peyton Manning. Going into the draft it was well known that Eli had no intention of playing in San Diego, despite them owning the first overall draft choice. Enter the New York Giants. Finishing with the fourth worst record in the NFL in 2003 and thus the fourth overall selection in 2004, the Giants took NC State quarterback Philip Rivers fourth overall. They then would broker a deal with the Chargers, to send the aforementioned Rivers along with a third round selection in 2004 and first and fifth round picks in 2005 to the Chargers for the disgruntled Eli Manning. While the trade is mostly seen as a success for the Giants, who received Manning who would lead them to two Super Bowls and win two MVP awards, the Chargers did pretty well themselves. Rivers is also considered a hall-of-fame quarterback despite never making it to the Super Bowl, he often led the league in passing yards and touchdowns. The Chargers also were able to draft kicker Nate Kaeding with the third-round selection in 2004, and the first-round pick in 2005 got them linebacker Shawne Merriman to bolster the Chargers defense for most of his six seasons. He also led the league in quarterback sacks in his first three seasons with 39.5 and was the defensive rookie of the year.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for August 22, 2023.Monday was hot. Tuesday will be even hotter. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny and hot Tuesday in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 101 degrees. Head index values could get as high as 118.After months of turmoil with closings and reopenings, the iconic Hamburg Inn No. 2 was purchased last week by a group of local investors and is expected to reopen this fall. The restaurant at 214 N. Linn St. closed in July for the second time in a year. It will reopen in October under new management.New owner Gold Cap Hospitality, which owns Pullman Bar & Diner and St. Burch Tavern in Iowa City, hopes to keep the staple's cultural importance intact “with the intention of stewarding the next generation of this Iowa City institution,” the company said in a news release.“After almost 90 years, The Burg needs some fixing up. We're taking stock of the things that are broken along with the things that aren't,” said Nate Kaeding, founding partner and lead strategist at Gold Cap HospitalityFlanked by National Guard soldiers, an armored Humvee and law enforcement, Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds on Monday attacked Democratic President Joe Biden's border policies, blaming him for record-high crossings, humanitarian concerns and an increase in fentanyl coming into the United States.Reynolds joined fellow Republican governors Greg Abbott of Texas, Jim Pillen of Nebraska, Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma and Kristi Noem of South Dakota for a news conference in Eagle Pass, Texas, where that state installed a 1,000-foot-long floating barrier in July as part of a $4 billion border security initiative, Operation Lone Star.Reynolds criticized President Biden for reversing border control policies put into place by former president Donald Trump, saying it has now made every state effectively a border state.“Certainly, not to the extent that Texas is experiencing. But, let me tell you, Iowa is located at the intersection of two major interstates, and it is a pathway for the Mexican cartel and human traffickers to take to go from Mexico to the Midwest.”Since 2020, Iowa has seen a 500 percent increase in the amount of fentanyl seized, a 100 percent increase in meth seized and a 35 percent increase in drug-related deaths. Much of it can be traced back to Mexican drug cartels, Reynolds said.A new pair of Iowa polls, both regular and straw, show former President Donald Trump with a commanding lead over the expansive field of Republican candidates for president.Trump's advantage roughly five months out from the Republican Iowa caucuses, the first state nominating contest in next year's presidential selection process, showed up over the weekend in both the Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll, and the Iowa Secretary of State's State Fair Straw Poll.In the Iowa Poll, Trump was the choice of 42 percent of likely Iowa Republican caucus participants, a full 23 percentage points ahead of the next-highest polling candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 19 percent.Trump was also the choice of 42.5 percent of participants in the State Fair Straw Poll, which is an unscientific survey that is available to everyone at the Iowa State Fair, regardless of voter registration status, age or even residence. The poll is featured at the Iowa Secretary of State's booth during the fair.

Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, and frequent Willets Pod punching bag, has a challenge to keep his job beyond 2023: score 25 points per game. Can he do it?Let's take another angle on this, and check out how Iowa did the last time they faced each of these opponents…Utah State — 48-7 (h), 2002: Nate Kaeding was Iowa's leading scorer with two field goals and six extra points, of which four were actually scored by the offense (all by different players), plus a blocked punt and a fumble return. This Iowa team had Dallas Clark, and he did not score in this game. @ Iowa State — 7-10 (h), 2022: Leshon Williams ran 14 times for 34 yards and the Hawkeyes' only score of last year's El Assico.Western Michigan — 59-3 (h), 2013: Sure, seems like a cupcake. This was Iowa's only win, ever, against the Broncos, who came to Kinnick Stadium and scored victories in 2000 and 2007.@ Penn State — 23-20 (h), 2021: Caleb Shudak hit two field goals and PATs after two (2) Spencer Petra's passing TDs to pace Iowa with eight points. Michigan State – 49-7 (h), 2020: The pandemic year sure was weird, as Iowa scored nothing but touchdowns, including two apiece by co-leading scorers Tyler Goodson and Mekhi Sargent, each with a pair of single-digit yard scoring runs. There were also return touchdowns by Charlie Jones on a punt and Riley Moss on an interception. It's still Iowa.Purdue – 24-3 (a), 2022: Iowa scored three offensive touchdowns against the Boilermakers last year, but this would still be below target for Brian Ferentz. You have to ask if that's really fair, and then ask, who cares?@ Wisconsin – 24-10 (h), 2022: Another game in which the Hawkeyes' victorious performance of a year ago would be below Brian's standards. Sure, Iowa only had 146 yards of total offense and 11 first downs against Wisconsin last year, and capitalized on three turnovers, but… uh…Minnesota – 13-10 (a), 2022: All Brian Ferentz does is lead winning offenses, and all Iowa asks for is more… than one touchdown (on a one-yard QB sneak) and two field goals. The Hawkeyes had 280 yards of offense and fumbled three times in Minneapolis in November, but didn't lose any of them, and collected two Gophers turnovers.@ Northwestern – 33-13 (h), 2022: Kicker Drew Stevens was responsible for 15 of those points (four field goals, three extra points)... at home… against 2022 Northwestern.Rutgers – 27-20 (a), 2022: How did Iowa get its 27 points in New Jersey last year? Interception return, fumble return, field goal, two-yard touchdown run, field goal. A fat 277 yards of offense… and a 3-0 turnover margin.Illinois – 6-9 (a), 2022: This game had no touchdowns. How did Iowa lose a game with no touchdowns in it?@ Nebraska – 17-24 (h), 2022: Iowa was down 24-0 in the third quarter before getting on the scoreboard. The Hawkeyes had 274 yards of offense in this game. That's a total of 330 points — 27.5 per game. All Iowa has to do is match what it did against each of its 2023 opponents the last time they faced them, and Brian keeps his job. And that's with a six-point game against Illinois allowed in there. And, for some reason, Iowa-Northwestern this year will be at Wrigley Field, it was announced this morning. This is a public episode. How do these elite kickers continue to keep their roster spot into their 30s and even 40s? Nate Kaeding spent almost all of his career with the San Diego Chargers after being a highly touted 3rd round pick and the top specialist in the 2004 NFL Draft. Nick Lowery was cut 11 times before beating out future Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud for the Kansas City Chiefs starting job. There are multiple ways to make the league but to last you need grit and a personal philosophy on life, family, and competition. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
