We've recently lost one of the great directors over the last few decades in David Lynch who was known for showing the dreamy and nightmarish side of America (and we need you now, David). The other great tellers of American stories over the same period have been Joel and Ethan Coen. They have protagonists who start out in precarious positions in life....then things go downhill. Welcome to episode 124 of See Hear Podcast. There's definitely a rhythm to the Coen Brothers' films....even if their films are not ABOUT music or musicians, they feel musical (and having Carter Burwell score many of their films doesn't hurt in that regard). Two films, however, stick out as music films in their catalogue – O Brother, Where Art Thou and Inside Llewyn Davis – it's the latter that is the focus of this episode. Sadly, neither Kerry nor Tim were available to record this show, but I welcome back film professor, author, and fellow podcaster Neil Fox back to the show. He selected Inside Llewyn Davis for our discussion, and I couldn't have been happier to revisit this 2013 film that has seemingly divided people on its merits (spoiler alert – we both love it). The film starts off in Greenwich Village in 1961, and is about a few days in the life of folk musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) as he moves from couch to couch, gig to gig, kindness to kindness....and he responds poorly despite being the recipient of others' good nature towards him. Is he an awful human being, or is he lashing out due to a terrible event regarding a former musical partner? Neil and I had a great conversation about this film and a variety of related issues. Since the film is Bob Dylan adjacent, we had to bring in our thoughts about the recently released Dylan biopic focusing on his early years, A Complete Unknown and see how its tone contrasts with the Coens outlook. I am grateful for Neil giving over his time to chat with me. He brings a perspective I was fascinated to hear. In Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music (Bloomsbury, 2024), Dr. Neil Fox considers a broad range of music documentaries, delving into their cinematic style, political undertones, racial dynamics, and gender representations, in order to assess their role in the cultivation of myth. Combining historical and critical analyses, and drawing on film and music criticism, Fox examines renowned music films such as A Hard Day's Night (1964), Dig! (2004), and Amazing Grace (2006), critically lauded works like Milford Graves Full Mantis (2018) and Mistaken for Strangers (2013), and lesser-studied films including Jazz on a Summer's Day (1959) and Ornette: Made in America (1985). In doing so, he offers a comprehensive overview of the genre, situating these films within their wider cultural contexts and highlighting their formal and thematic innovations. Discussions in the book span topics from concert filmmaking to music production, the music industry, touring, and filmic representations of authenticity and truth. Overall, Music Films traces the evolution of the genre, highlighting its cultural significance and connection to broader societal phenomena. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

Do you like music films? Dumb question, I guess, because if you've deliberately downloaded an episode of See Hear, you know that music films are our niche in the podcast world. For us to discover that there was a new book about the subject that drives this very podcast....well, there was much cheering and jumping for joy. Welcome to episode 121 of See Hear Podcast. We welcome to the show Professor Neil Fox of Falmouth University. He's written a terrific book called “Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music”. He felt that music films were poorly regarded in the wider space of cinematic genres.....which is stupid. As our show has proven, the wider umbrella of music cinema can include discussion of class divides, social structure, civil rights, the cult of celebrity, mental health, and knocking down Stonehenge. Neil's book puts specific films under the microscope and links them thematically.....many made in the 21st Century. He shows that the wider umbrella of music cinema has much to say....regardless of whether you want something deep or something fluffy. It should be celebrated as much as anything out there. You may think you know a thing or two about music films, but Neil's book reveals so many interesting films that deserve a wider audience. You don't even need to be a fan of the music some of these films celebrate.....just an interest in stories well told....and that, dear friends, is what drives this very podcast. Huge thanks to Neil for being such a great conversationalist. Extra thanks go to the host of the Beatles Books podcast, Joe Wisbey for making the connection. If you want to get hold of a copy of the book (and it's highly recommended by Tim, Kerry and myself), you can order it from https://www.bloomsbury.com/au/music-films-9781839023439/ or wherever you get your books. Our own Prof. Neil Fox in his day job is director of Falmouth University's Sound/Cinema Lab, which is behind films such as Mark Jenkin's Enys Men (2022) and Chris Morris' A Year in a Field (2022) as well as Wilderness (2017), which Neil wrote and produced. Wilderness was also made with a student crew and was proof of concept for making a feature drama within the structure of a university course. With Dario delivering a module to second-year students called Professional Life Practice, designed to help students research and understand the creative industries and learn from working experiences, Neil very generously agreed to answer a range of questions on subjects including his ethos of film pedagogy, how students should use extra-curricula events to shape their careers, the process of developing Wilderness, how students were recruited and what roles they took, understanding a professional mindset, and how the students' experiences on the film shaped their career pathways. Neil is on top form in this talk which is why we have decided to put it out as a bonus episode. It's a hugely valuable insight for film lecturers in practice and screenwriting, and definitely for students in all areas of the creative industries. The company's mission is to recycle wastes from the nuclear power industry such as Tritium and Carbon-14 and safely convert them into useful products that benefit the technological advancement of humanity. Morgan is a committed technologist whose knowledge spans from the deeply technical & scientific to the commercialization of high technology concepts. He joined the ASPIRE group in 2019, prior to the formation of the Arkenlight, to focus on commercializing a full range of radiovoltaics. Arkenlight has one patent with more coming, covering the process of incorporating radioisotopes into diamond material and manufacturing. Among the products in development is the betalight voltaic battery, a type of nuclear battery which generates electrical current from a gaseous tritium light source (GTLS) or betalight vial and a scintillator sandwiched between two photovoltaic cells. The GTLS gives a steady glow, while the tritium undergoes beta particle decay, and these particles excite the phosphor. The optical photons from the betalight are collected in a standard photo-voltaic (PV) cell, creating electrical current at the voltage of the PV cell. It will power devices for decades, according to the company. How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. The podcast is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Overcast, Pocketcasts and Radio Public.

Over the course of the hour the three editors discuss how the book captures a significant moment, not only in terms of content but also in terms of the interdisciplinarity of the contributors, highlighting the potentiality of podcasting at a moment when it’s threatened by the corporatisation that has befallen other mediums and art-forms historically. It’s not all doom and gloom though, as Neil, Dario and Richard talk about why they love the medium and hopefully convey some of the energy and excitement that comes out of the book, for this emerging, empathetic and enlightening medium. Successive episodes will feature interviews with the book’s contributors and a final episode will see the co-editors come together again, this time to discuss their own contributions to the collection. In this entry, the dreaded nemesis of humanity, Shedder (Tee) is broken out of prison by kooky-but-brilliant scientist Baxter Stockman (Perry), who has been entrusted to invent an ultra-powerful transporter device that will allow for travel between dimensions. Also on board is the maniacal alien Krang, who is part giant robot, part evil living brain, who sets about getting Shredder to use some strange, mutating ooze to make an army of super soldiers out of the Foot Clan, starting with the dimwitted but burly thugs Bebop (Williams) and Rock Steady (WWE's Sheamus), who immediately turn into a Rhino-man and Warthog-man, respectively. Krang's wild scheme involves gaining the otherworldly pieces together to form a gargantuan spaceship, the Technodrome, which is so powerful that he can usurp the entire planet of Earth with it once assembled. Leading the resistance yet again are the titular quartet of Turtles, along with ally news reporter April O'Neil (Fox), spirited hockey-loving cop Casey Jones ("Arrow" star Amell), and Vern Fenwick (Arnett), the smarmy cameraman who got credit for saving New York from Shredder and gang the last time around because the Turtles weren't 'ready for the world'. Meanwhile, the Turtlesare conflicted about what to do about the mysterious ooze, as it not only has the power to turn humans into creatures, but also to turn the Turtles into humans, which could mean an end to them feeling like pariahs in a world where they're seen as monsters, despite their determination to be New York City's protectors.

She was the first female presenter to join the station and is the only female drivetime DJ on London radio. Angie went on to produce and present many long running, popular radio shows. She was the first DJ on Spectrum Radio at its launch on June 25 1990. Between 1992 and 1997, Angie presented the “Angie Greaves Breakfast Show” on Choice FM, London’s first urban radio station. It became the most listened to show in the station's schedule and saw listening figures treble In the UK Angie currently presents the weekday drivetime and Saturday morning shows on London's Magic 105.4, which feature music, competitions and Angie’s Book Club. She also presents Mellow Magic Love Letters every night and regularly fills in for Neil Fox on Magic Breakfast.
