Sunsetting features is rarely a celebrated milestone in product, but it's often one of the most critical. In this episode, Ronie Ben Aharon CPO and CTO of Craft.io, joins Lily and Randy to share how his team made the tough call to retire a key feature—and what they learned in the process.Ronie walks us through a real-world example of removing Craft.io's visual spec tool, why trying to compete with established platforms like Figma didn't make sense, and how they approached the transition with both technical rigour and user empathy. He also explains what happens when a sunset strategy goes wrong, and the lingering costs of keeping legacy features alive.Key takeaways- Sunsetting is about creating space for more impactful product work.- Features that seem harmless because they're underused often introduce hidden costs, especially when they complicate onboarding, UX, and development cycles.- Data-related features are the hardest to retire. Plan for thoughtful migration and clear communication with users.- Soft approaches, like “feature starvation,” can backfire and prolong technical debt.- Strong collaboration between product, customer success, and engineering is key to pulling off a successful sunset.Chapters0:00 – Why announcing a feature sunset is rarely met with applause1:58 – What makes sunsetting necessary, and why underused features are a risk5:01 – How to recognise when it's time to kill a feature6:10 – The story behind Craft.io's visual spec feature and why they let it go9:01 – Navigating the difficult conversations with users who still rely on a dying feature12:27 – Handling data migration without compromising user trust14:04 – A sunset that didn't go as planned: learning from the feedback portal misstep22:44 – Managing engineering expectations and avoiding unnecessary rebuilds24:38 – How sunsetting shapes the way new features are designed26:11 – Final reflections on doing it right—and why it's worth itFeatured Link: Follow Roni on LinkedIn | Craft.io | Figma | 'Sunsetting success: How to strategically phase out products in the digital age' feature by Balaji Ananthanpilla and Sabah Qazi at Mind The ProductOur HostsLily Smith enjoys working as a consultant product manager with early-stage and growing startups and as a mentor to other product managers. I'm sad to say that the Int-HER-rupt Podcast is coming to an end. I know, I know—it's been a good run, and I've learned a lot from being the host of this podcast. In this episode, I'm going to share the biggest lessons I've learned from hosting Int-HER-rupt. Also, if you'd still like to hear my lovely voice, head on over to the Nourify and Beautify Podcast. It's a new show where I co-host with Nour Abochama, diving into the secrets behind your favorite beauty products. Learn more about it in the resource section. Sunsetting the Int-HER-rupt Podcast After four years and 200 episodes, you'd think I'd keep going with the podcast. Of course, I'd love to, but I'm experiencing an "IntHERruption" in my own career. Even though we're saying goodbye to the podcast, that doesn't mean it won't still be available. You can always go back and listen to the episodes whenever you like. The Value of Interruptions You may feel like interruptions are the worst things that can happen, but it's better to see them as something positive. View the interruptions in your life as opportunities for growth and learning. Those random bad moments can also be unexpected blessings in disguise. Life Lessons from Leading Women One of the biggest lessons I've learned from this podcast is that you must always know how to speak up for yourself. You are your strongest advocate. No one will take care of you better than you. Use your voice to empower yourself and become an effective leader. Shoutout to TSE Studios I have to thank the TSE Studios team for their wonderful help in creating and producing this podcast. A special shoutout goes to Donald Kelly for his mentorship, and I'd like to acknowledge Shana, Nancy, and Priya for their contributions. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C - as called for in the Paris Agreement - emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. But as the days pass, the world is staring at a growing emissions gap. Back in 2021, Speed & Scale - a global initiative aimed at pushing leaders to act on the climate crisis - built a plan based on 10 objectives, each with its own set of milestones, or “key results” - to zero out the world's 59 gigatons of annual greenhouse gas emissions, before it's too late. And just recently, Speed & Scale released a global progress report, tracking where the world is making good headway on the road to net zero and where it's lagging. Most importantly, it points to where we need to go from here in the transition to clean energy, in scaling renewables and cleantech and also in phasing out fossil fuels. On this episode of Climate Connections, Anjali Grover, Managing Director, Speed & Scale shares more about their blueprint, challenges in tracking some key areas and strategies that can be undertaken to push the world ahead. Section 230 is not a special privilege for big tech, it enables third party participation in communication that even big tech, with its deep pockets, wouldn't risk liability to host, let alone smaller platforms, which couldn't afford one lawsuit. Section 230 also doesn't encourage platforms to have no community guidelines, with a wild west of social media, but the opposite. It helped correct the liability of a platform, so that it could moderate content, such as hate speech, without being considered a publisher. Therefore, it doesn't require the platform, big or small, to have a totally hands-off approach in order to be defensible against liability. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, we have a rare repeat guest on the podcast. Listeners may remember innovator and thought leader Peter Hinssen from the 2019 ISF Congress in Dublin. We had him back this year at ISF's 2023 Congress in Rotterdam. He and Steve had a chance to talk about the future of work post-pandemic. Their conversation offers lots of practical tips for leaders working to prevent workforce burnout and how boards can approach adopting new technologies like AI. Key Takeaways: 1. COVID has made lasting impacts on the future of work. 2. Annual budgets and other commonly used business practices are in the process of evolving into ones that are more malleable and adaptive. 3. Companies will need to reinvent themselves to thrive in the new “never normal.” 4. With the rise of AI and large language models, organisations do have a lot of work ahead. Tune in to hear more about: 1. COVID's impact on the future of work (1:40) 2. Sunsetting pre-pandemic business norms while imagining new ones (2:47) 3. Companies in every sector will be reinventing themselves in order to thrive in the new “never normal.” (6:33) 4. As AI and large language models are integrated into global business, what's next for business leaders? (14:12) Standout Quotes: 1. “One of the good things I think that we've gotten back from COVID or that we've retained from COVID is that I think the acceleration of the future of work has really happened. I think we're now seeing companies that clearly see that the way we did HR, employment, and work pre pandemic, we can't just hope that that is going to come back. And I think that is a fundamental change that I think was really something that the pandemic helped us with.” -Peter Hinssen 2. “But you know, that stronghold, that idea, that framework of an annual budget that we've held on to for such a long time is very difficult to actually give up. But I think it's exciting, because I think in this never normal, we're going to see new mechanisms and new ideas and new concepts and new governance ideas that are going to come to fruition. But at this moment, we're still very much in that transition.” -Peter Hinssen 3. “I really believe after a decade of unicorn applause, we're now going to have a decade of potential phoenixes out there. And I think a big part as a leader in such a phoenix transformation is to actually give your workforce, your people that sense of we're going to do this together.” -Peter Hinssen 4. “We're going to have to deal with that governance of content, unstructured flows, and that's a whole new kettle of fish that we have to understand. New technologies, new mechanisms, new ways of dealing with that. And I think it's going to open up a huge opportunity in terms of thinking about risk and thinking about security in that context. So I don't think you can ignore this. This is the biggest thing that I have ever seen in 30 years in IT. And if you're not on top of this, you're gonna be behind … And I think honestly, more and more boards are going to need to figure out how to build the skills and the mechanisms and the place to discuss these things that are not just compliance with the tsunami, but also the innovations that you cannot afford to miss. And I think, honestly, that's going to change the dialogue in the board quite a bit.” -Peter Hinssen Mentioned in this episode: Remote Working and Cyber Risk Threat Horizon 2025: Scenarios for an uncertain future - full report (ISFLIve) ISF Analyst Insight Podcast The Phoenix and the Unicorn Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.

Unlocking Amazon's Algorithm with Colin Raja: A Deep Dive into Ranking, Indexing, and Keyword Strategies In this insightful episode of the podcast, host Danny McMillan welcomes back Colin Raja, a New York-based brand builder who skyrocketed his startup from a modest investment to a million-dollar enterprise within 18 months. The duo embarks on a detailed exploration of Amazon's ranking mechanics, discussing indexing, keyword linking, and the future of Q&A features. Indexing Insights: Amazon's Evolving Indexing Strategy: Colin demystifies Amazon's indexing process, highlighting the transition from simplistic category-based indexing to a more nuanced approach involving product type, item type, and gender ledger. This evolution underscores Amazon's commitment to refining its categorisation to improve product discoverability and relevance. The Importance of Relevancy: As the conversation unfolds, Colin emphasises that relevancy and conversion rates are pivotal in achieving better rankings. He shares groundbreaking tactics, including leveraging Amazon's AI for semantic matching, which allows products to rank for related keywords without explicit indexing. Keyword Linking Mastery: Colin unveils his advanced keyword linking strategy, distinguishing between browse keywords and purchase keywords. By identifying and exploiting the intricacies of keyword relevancy and conversion metrics, Colin outlines how to optimise PPC campaigns and achieve significant ranking improvements. The discussion further delves into the use of bigrams and trigrams in creating a scoring system that enhances keyword relevancy and ranking potential. This sophisticated approach enables sellers to strategically position their products in highly competitive niches. Sunsetting of Q&A and its Implications: Highlighting an imminent shift in Amazon's platform, Colin predicts the phasing out of the Q&A feature. He advises sellers to capitalise on the current functionalities to enhance product visibility and keyword relevancy, underscoring the dynamic nature of Amazon's algorithm and the need for sellers to stay informed and adaptable. Summary: This episode is a treasure trove of strategies for sellers looking to navigate Amazon's complex algorithm. From the nuances of indexing and the power of keyword linking to adapting to platform changes, Colin Raja and Danny McMillan offer invaluable insights into achieving eCommerce success. This process is a natural part of the life cycle of all technologies and is necessary to improve and modernize networks. The sunsetting of mobile networks, such as 2G and 3G, is currently on the agenda for many markets. These networks are becoming outdated and cannot support the increasing demands for IoT devices and applications. However, the industry tries to approach this process in a controlled way and give a heads-up to the market where possible. This means that the sunsetting process is not sudden and abrupt but rather a gradual transition. As Chief Technology Officer, Martin Whitlock leads Telenor Connexion's global technology team, driving major technology-enabled initiatives as part of the company's expanding business strategy. We have to admit it—the world we live in is fully subscribed to the idea of worldliness. We are now in a time where earthly desires are welcomed, masked and embraced with the idea of normalcy. And so oftentimes, we find ourselves rationalizing and saying: It's normal. It's what everybody does. It's all around us. But normalcy isn't synonymous with righteousness. No. The earthly things that we resort to in order to express our feelings of sexuality are not the proper channels. Rather, these could stray us into addiction and later on lead us to destruction. What we have to understand is that the external is always the manifestation of what's inside. What you do is not only because of the external forces that trigger you. There is something deep in yourself that gets affected by these outside forces. And so inspecting the inner workings of your sexuality is a way to see how this translates to the external actions that you resort into doing. And in this introspection of yourself, your sexuality, your triggers, and your earthly desires lies the path to spirituality that fosters your connection to God. Listen to Episode 156 to learn more!
