In this episode David Burgess, Owner of We Move You Edinburgh discusses how he began loosely in the industry, by mistake, in 2000, doing removals while studying for a post graduate degree in physiotherapy. David's old company was rebranded We Move You Edinburgh a couple of years ago, and provide the usual domestic moving services, house clearances, shipping container storage, and a weekly run to and from London, running 4 vehicles with a crew of 4. We Move You Edinburgh is massively into recycling and therefore tries to reduce landfill as much as possible, collecting 100 tonne of furniture every year. With house clearances David tries to sell, give away or even upcycle the items, rather than letting them go to landfill. One of the challenges David had to overcome was Covid, where David found himself being too busy and practically burned himself out having to deal with staff getting Covid, staff on furlough and not wanting to return to work, and therefore having to do their job, as well as his own. The one thing David would change from his moving past is maybe taking a step back and taking time out during Covid. Also, learning and knowing your numbers is critical, something that was detrimental to David over previous years. David's highpoint of being within the industry, apart from being a guest on the podcast, is obtaining his Operators Licence. The one thing David would like to change within the industry is the no parking on pavements ruling, which in David's situation is specific to Edinburgh as many of the roads are simply not wide enough to have vehicles parked either side of the road and leave a large enough gap for vehicles to pass, especially emergency service vehicles. The advice David would give himself just starting out within the industry again is to charge more. In the next 5 years David would like more vehicles, more storage (a warehouse or more shipping containers), and even his own land. Regarding recycling, David would like to open up a shop (with or without a partner) to sell items from house clearances, auctioning off anything that doesn't sell, and any items that remain unsold can then be used to smash up inside a Rage Room! Industry wise David sees the recycling side increasing but changes outside of the industry still need to be made to make the green removal service achievable. Much to David's downfall he did very little outside of the industry in the past, however, he is switching off more and more these days, and is very active in OCR (Obstacle Course Racing) and supporting his daughter in her field of vaulting (acrobatics performed on the back of a cantering horse), where she is a British Champion. And as always, we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story regarding a helping hand from the afterlife. Enjoy! Razem z najlepszymi specjalistami i fizjopasjonatami, tworzą, promują i wspierają rozwój szeroko pojętej fizjokultury.
Charles Jazz Vassallo is a 46 year-old South Brooklyn Native. He has have been a competitive athlete for most of his life including his current status as a nationally ranked endurance and OCR athlete, however, the road to this success did not come without considerable challenges. In 2009, He lost all motivation towards healthy living and a better life after a long series of tragic and stressful events, including the murder of his sister in 2009, where soon after, his health started to deplete, adopting new ailments like pre diabetes type-2 aka insulin resistance, leaky gut, hypothyroidism, psoriasis and depression. This may have been the most emotionally draining, scary and hard-hitting time of his life; right up there with 2004, where He was left to raise his daughter as a single dad and ended up homeless, living in his car for 4 months. Battling adversity was just a daily occurrence, only this time, He stumbled upon his calling in the health, wellness, fitness and nutrition industry and with no doubt or uncertainty, became his lifeline. The inspiration came after He found OCR (Obstacle Course Racing) in 2011, thus the birth of becoming an extreme endurance athlete. It was not long after He began competing, before He became relevant in the sport, making frequent podium appearances, was nationally ranked and was winning his way into every race. In the interim of his achievements, He developed and built a winning formula for true health and wellness, optimal athletic performance and overall increased quality of life, which he defines as the synchronization of mind, body and spirit, taking consideration all things exercise, nutrition and mental clarity. It was not until He became a Nutrition Coach, Nutritionist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist, that He was able to make sense of it all. He studied how food can be used as medicine and how proper nutrition can heal the body of almost any sickness. Today, He does not suffer from any of the ailments that once controlled his life. He has been a personal trainer for 6 years, ranging from a bodyweight exercise specialist, HIIT training, boot camps and now a strength and conditioning coach and corrective exercise specialist with an emphasis on 1-on-1 functional movement and conditioning. His greatest achievements are when He can help change a life, one at a time, even in a small way and guide people to be the absolute best versions of themselves, inside and out. We welcome editor Erik Swanson on the show, who recently completed work on his first feature length credit: Rise of the Sufferfests, a documentary that explores the rising trend of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing). You may have heard me talk about OCR occasionally as it's become an obsession of mine in the past year. If you've heard of Tough Mudder, Spartan races or anything similar then you've probably thought one of two things: 1) "That sounds like fun!" or 2) "Why do people actually do this??" Rise of the Sufferfests sets out to answer that latter question, as director Scott Keneally investigates the world of OCR using himself as a guinea pig and interviews with multiple racers. Erik Swanson got started in filmmaking working mostly with sports editorial footage for 11 years before jumping into the world of freelancing and becoming attached to RotS with Scott and his group. Documentary filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. It can involve insanely large amounts of dedicated time, endless hours of footage to sift through and a story to find. It's not like scripted content where you always start the timeline with some semblance of a story prepared. The editor has a lot of creative control when it comes to crafting the story of a doc, but it's also a huge responsibility. In this episode Erik and I discussed: how he rose to the challenge of editing Rise of the Sufferfests how he looks for the story in the footage how does documentary editing differ from scripted content will he continue pursuing documentaries and also will he be signing up for an obstacle course race in the future? You can watch Rise of the Sufferfests right now (as of Sept 1st, 2016) on iTunes. Click the link here to purchase a digital copy instantly on iTunes for $14.99 or visit the store on the RotS website to purchase a t-shirt/movie bundle. Watch the movie already? Obstacle course racing is the next soccer. Yeah, it's a 'thing'. You've probably heard of one. Or know someone who has---or will---do one. They change lives. And for us MyFixitUpLifer's there's an extra cool part: It's loaded with DIY of building stuff. So if you're not lacing up for your own obstacle course racing journey, without people to build the obstacles—for races or for backyards---the race is just a walk in the woods. So this MyFixitUpLife show will inspire the fire for the DIY of OCR. Spartan Race's (in)famous Race Director Norm Koch takes us behind the spectacle where the tools are machetes and chainsaws and a whole lotta work. And HGTV's John Colaneri—co-host of America's Most Desperate Kitchens and a Spartan racing / Cross-fit nut job (we love you anyway Johnny)—chimes in with fitness tips he uses to stay extra handsome. This isn't about the gym. Or how fast you go. It's about life itself and building your own tools for the journey. As someone I admire wrote: I already know what it feels like to fail. I want to see what it's like to succeed. Life happens to all of us. It's what we do about it that counts; how we handle the obstacles. So tool up and come obstacle course racing with us Lifers, time for a little dirty fun.
