In this episode, host Pete Moore sits down with Mary Laudati, a seasoned sales and marketing leader with deep roots in the HALO (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoor) space. From her days leading the sales group at Sports Club LA to her current role as a consultant working with top clubs across the U.S. and internationally, Mary shares her insights on building effective sales strategies, leveraging cutting-edge software like Salesforce, and creating a powerful culture of member engagement and retention. She provides boots-on-the-ground, immediately actionable tips on using data, recording sales calls, and mystery shopping to pinpoint where clubs are leaving revenue on the table—plus, the importance of strong onboarding and personal connections to keep members coming back. Mary also discusses the latest trends in CRM technology, club operations, and the shift toward shared memberships and referral models. Whether you're a club owner, sales team leader, or just passionate about the business of the HALO space, Mary's advice on finding—and keeping—members is pure gold. On early member retention, she states, "Those three months are crucial . . . for those clubs that don't have salespeople, not only do you want to embrace the incoming (they've got to follow up and make a lot of phone calls), but they also have to check on the new members and look at their attendance to make sure that they're coming in." Key themes discussed Importance of sales strategies and processes in health clubs. Customizable CRM/software solutions for sales and retention. The critical role of training and investing in your employees. KPIs, net growth, revenue, and retention. Mystery shopping and call recording for sales team improvement. Enhancing member engagement, onboarding, and relationship-building. Shared membership/referral programs to boost membership and loyalty. A few key takeaways: 1. Sales Process Needs Structure and Ongoing Evaluation: Mary emphasized that many clubs claim to have a strong sales team, but more often than not lack strategies, scripts, or KPIs. She underlined the importance of having sequential, process-driven systems and regular evaluation—often through recording, analyzing calls, and “mystery shopping” the current experience. 2. CRMs and Custom Software Are Game-Changers: A major part of the episode centers around the critical need for effective, customizable CRMs. Mary championed Salesforce for its adaptability, noting her experience implementing it at Millennium Partners. She highlighted recent successes helping clubs (like Powerhouse Gyms in Novi, MI) leverage technology to understand their numbers, coach their teams, and boost revenue. 3. Training and Investment in People Drives Revenue: Laudati strongly advocates investing in employee training alongside technology. She's seen clients who paired software adoption with robust training, and realized up to 25% growth year-over-year. She's a believer in hands-on onboarding, coaching, and ensuring team members are held accountable—not just to sales, but to ongoing member engagement. 4. Retention is as Critical as Acquisition: Both Mary and Pete stressed the importance of looking beyond just new member acquisition to also address attrition. Laudati recommends clubs track net growth (sales minus cancels), invest in the early months of a member's journey, proactively reach out to disengaged members, and create meaningful connections (a la “Cheers,” where everyone knows your name!) 5. Shared Memberships and Ongoing Engagement are Winning Strategies: Highlighting clients like Bay Clubs, Laudati also talked about the explosion of shared or referral-based memberships and how they can create instant community and value. She noted the value of actively integrating new members into programs or group activities (think personal training, group ex, or even pickleball) during the crucial first three months to help maximize retention. Jacoby Landry, the new owner of Lafayette's oldest indoor shopping center, Northgate Mall, shares his vision to bring hope, commerce, and fresh energy to North Lafayette. Jacoby's energy and can-do attitude is a beacon of light for a community waiting to see how he will transform the mall into "The Hub." Jacoby, owner of JL Construction and Pont Breaux Plaza in Breaux Bridge, is the first local owner of Northgate Mall in years. Originally developed by Isan Fontenot, Dr. Daniel Voorheis and Joseph Angelle who opened it in August 1969, Jacoby paid $2.8 million for the property. His journey started under the wing of his grandfather, a framer, and his father, who ran dirt construction, trucking businesses, and in the oil field industry. “My entrepreneurial skills came from my dad. He's always been a business owner.” After studying engineering at UL Lafayette, Jacoby discovered his love for business and numbers, opening a tax office in his early twenties. Real estate soon became his passion, with his first major commercial property purchased from cousin Dominick Williams (formerly Dominick Davis of LSU and the Houston Texans). “There's nothing that I didn't try,” Jacoby shared, reflecting on his entrepreneurial spirit. In 2016, Jacoby earned his residential contractor's license, followed by obtaining his commercial license a year later. “I went from building custom homes to developing my own lots and building spec homes and selling them.” His interest in North Lafayette grew when he purchased seven acres on Louisiana Avenue at Butcher Switch Road in 2020 with plans for a med spa and gym. Facing zoning challenges, Jacoby joined LEDA's Elevate North Lafayette program, where he connected with Monte Anderson, a Dallas-based developer. Monte's advice led Jacoby to consider revitalizing existing properties, prompting Jacoby to set his sights on Northgate Mall. "I was always infatuated with the I-10 and I-49 crossing. I just always had it in my mind that it (development) was going to come to the North one day." “Before I started the program, I had goals of doing something bigger, but they really pushed me to actually go do it. They gave me the courage and knowledge to do it.” Once Jacoby walked the property, he couldn't sleep at night thinking about its potential. “Ever since the day I walked on the property, I couldn't sleep at night, thinking about it. I think I want to do it.” Despite initial nerves, Jacoby embraced the risk, saying, “I'm a risk taker. I could do this.” Jacoby Landry at the Northgate Mall in June 2025. Photo by Brad Kemp, Acadiana Advocate. Jacoby is rebranding Northgate Mall as “The Hub,” inspired by Lafayette's nickname, Hub City, and the I-10/I-49 cloverleaf, which will be reflected in its new logo. The redevelopment will focus on mixed-use commerce, green spaces, and lighting to ensure safety and create a welcoming atmosphere. “I want to change the whole theme of the mall. I want to have trees, green space, make it nice, have a lot of lighting and make it feel safe.” Contrary to negative perceptions, Jacoby says, “Statistically, there's no crime at the mall. There's more crime in other places. The mall's been dead for so long, there's nothing to steal.” Jacoby's vision includes a grocery store, children's entertainment options, and a health club and spa in the former Planet Fitness space in partnership with his sister, Rachel McCorvey of BeLuxxe Health and Wellness Center. “Our whole motto is to add ten years to your life.” The facility will feature a nutritionist, weight management services, Botox, IV drips, sauna, hot tub, salt room, cold plunge, a health bar, and two indoor pickleball courts. Pilates and boxing fitness will also be offered, bringing Red's Health Club-like amenities to North Lafayette on a smaller, community-focused scale. Jacoby emphasized his commitment to supporting current tenants, saying, “They've been a blessing… I came to introduce myself to ...

Lisa Semerly's professional journey began in pharmaceutical sales, where she excelled working for Merck, specializing in respiratory care for over a decade. Seeking a change, Lisa took a buyout and ventured into the wellness arena by opening her own medical spa, a move that allowed her to blend her pharmaceutical insights with a passion for natural health. After nearly five successful years managing her spa, Lisa crossed paths with Steve Spiro (CEO) and was immediately impressed with the company and numerous uses of salt therapy for enhanced respiratory and overall health. Starting as a consultant, she swiftly transitioned into a full-time sales role. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and sales acumen, Lisa ascended to the position of Chief Revenue Officer. She has since been a driving force at Halotherapy Solutions for a decade, contributing significantly to the company's growth and success. Lisa and Pete also chat about collaborations with leading fitness clubs and spas, revealing not only how they can be added as a profit center but also how integrating salt therapy into workout routines can help enhance athletic performance and recovery. Rearding 'compact wellness solutions' Semerly mentions, "One of the huge benefits is being able to take a small . . . say 40" x 48" inch, 4' x 4' space, and then stack your infrared heat (which works on pain management, weight loss, muscle recovery, lots of great things) . . . on top of your salt therapy, which is a complete detox of the skin and the lungs." Key themes discussed Transitioned from pharma sales to wellness industry. Quickly growing interest in salt therapy especially post-COVID. All-natural recovery using stacked therapy modalities. Therapy, self-care, recovery essential for health. Small-space recovery: red light, salt, IV therapy. Anytime beta tests: positive feedback from consumers. Salt therapy provides relaxation and improved breathing. A few key takeaways: 1. Evolution and Increased Awareness of Salt Therapy: Lisa highlights salt therapy has evolved significantly over the past decade, particularly during COVID due to an increased focus on respiratory and immune health. People are much more aware of the benefits of salt therapy today than they were ten years ago. 2. Ease and Demand of Selling Wellness Solutions: Transitioning from pharmaceutical sales to the HALO space, Lisa noted that selling HALO-focused products, like salt therapy equipment, to health clubs and spas is generally easier and more rewarding. There is a far more enthusiatic and positive reception from the wellness sector when compared to the more challenging and competitive pharmaceutical space. 3. Stacked Modalities and ROI: The trend in the wellness industry is moving towards combining different recovery modalities within small footprints to maximize the return on investment. For example, combining infrared saunas with red light and salt therapy in one space optimizes both the use of space and the benefits for users, making it a lucrative setup for facility owners. 4. Immediate and Tangible Benefits: Users of salt therapy often report immediate relief and benefits such as improved respiratory function, reduced congestion, and a general sense of well-being. 5. Entrepreneurial Spirit and Overcoming Challenges: Semerly shared her personal journey moving from a secure pharmaceutical career to the uncertain world of entrepreneurship. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs includes staying disciplined, drowning out the negative noise, believing in oneself, and continuously putting one foot in front of the other to achieve success. Chris Craytor took on a significant challenge when joining the board of IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. At a time when raising funds was particularly difficult, Craytor played a key role in steering the organization towards a stronger focus on advocacy, education, and research. With the strategic hire of Liz Clark as CEO, Craytor helped pivot IHRSA—now known as the Health and Fitness Association—towards these critical areas. This shift was underscored by the COVID pandemic, which signifcantly heightened awareness among club operators about the importance of advocacy. Craytor envisions increased efforts to influence state-level legislation, recognizing that many crucial battles for the industry are won and lost at the local level. Chris and host Pete Moore discuss a range of topics crucial to the fitness industry, including managing member relationships, especially within the Medicare Advantage community, and the critical role of customer retention. Chris shares his innovative approach to business by addressing personal and professional challenges and emphasizes the significance of strong leadership. They also explore the ever-evolving landscape of health insurance, exercise and its impact on long-term health, and the importance of preventative care covered by groups like Medicare and Medicaid. Chris also highlights the rapid growth in insurance-based memberships and the challenges and solutions provided by Welld Health, a leading software platform connecting health clubs to healthcare payers. Key themes discussed Discussing importance of active voter participation and issues. ACAC founded with inclusive, community-focused approach. Layering AI in medical data for reimbursement. Software companies require 5-year SaaS agreements. States for ACAC business expansion in 36 months. Clean database, streamline member files, reduce rejection. Popular programs offer competitive advantages in business. A few key takeaways: 1. Medicare Advantage Programs and Revenue Potential: Health clubs can significantly benefit by targeting the Medicare Advantage community. Large chains have the potential to generate millions of dollars monthly through these programs. 2. Customer Retention and Leadership: Effective customer retention efforts are crucial for clubs. Finding the right individual within the club to manage these efforts can make a significant difference. The role of a Chief Revenue Officer was highlighted as potentially beneficial for improving accounting processes and overall efficiency. 3. ACAC's Inclusive and Comprehensive Approach: Chris shared insights into ACAC Fitness and Wellness, which operates on a larger format with high-end amenities. Their approach to inclusiveness, medical programs, physician referrals, and partnerships with doctors and hospitals sets them apart. The emphasis on tracking member outcomes and offering first-class service above their middle-market price point further highlights their differentiation. 4. Health and Fitness Advocacy: The rebranding of IHRSA as the Health and Fitness Association underscores a new focus on political advocacy, education, and research. Project 435, for example, aims to have a club captain advocating for health clubs in each of the 435 congressional districts, showcasing the importance of grassroots advocacy within the sector. 5. Challenges and Benefits of Health Insurance Integration: The podcast also shed light on the integration of health insurance with fitness clubs, particularly the challenges around eligibility verification, member management, and reconciliation. Software platforms like Welld Health play a critical role in reducing rejection rates and bad data, ultimately saving significant revenue for clubs. The ability to run long-term medical programs via partnerships with YMCA's and medical centers further illustrates the evolving landscape of preventative healthcare coverage. James McGinniss is the Co-Founder and CEO of David Energy, a technology-enabled electricity provider that caters primarily to multi-location businesses, quick-serve restaurants, and fitness brands, with a special emphasis on the latter. A mechanical engineering Master's graduate from the University of Texas, James was drawn to the renewable energy sector during a significant solar and wind power boom in the state. Witnessing firsthand the economic opportunities in solar, he recognized this as a pivotal moment in the industry and was inspired to contribute to the burgeoning field. David Energy aims to solve various energy-related challenges for its clients, leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and sustainability. MCGinniss also discusses how their platform not only offers lower and fixed pricing to safeguard against market fluctuations but also leverages smart technology to optimize energy use and drive cost savings. They explore case studies, including a compelling example of a fitness franchisee saving $11,000 in energy costs in just the first year. Pete and James also touch on the broader implications of these savings, from enhancing business valuations to providing peace of mind for owners wary of scammy energy rates. There are a variety of things that can happen where owners end up paying much more than they have to. James states, "The provider could miss-bill them for the wrong amount of volume. There's something called slamming, where providers just fraudulently sign up locations to their electricity supply rate, without the the owner knowing, because they've done it with the GM on-site or something. They could be paying twice as much as they should be . . . and there's a lot more." Key themes discussed Enforce thermostat rules, monitor HVAC, audit bills. Business models sharing savings, diminishing returns concern. Understanding electricity providers, regulation, and competition. Energy cost savings through efficient energy management. New technologies transforming energy use and distribution. Options to lower fixed costs and implementation. A few key takeaways: 1. James discussed how his company stands out by providing fixed electricity rates to protect customers from market price fluctuations. This financial predictability helps businesses plan their budgets more effectively. 2. David Energy primarily targets multi-location businesses. Their technology-driven approach, involving smart thermostats and energy monitoring, has proven effective in reducing electricity costs. 3. The company's process for onboarding new customers is designed to be efficient and minimally disruptive. Signing a contract, setting a start date, and installing necessary devices can be completed quickly, sometimes in just a few hours. 4. David Energy works with a range of businesses, from small gym owners to large corporate clients, aiming to provide substantial savings opportunities. Their mission is to bring advanced energy technologies to segments that have previously lacked access, thereby simplifying energy optimization for owners who lack the time to dive into this further. 5. Pete emphasized that the energy cost savings achieved through David Energy could significantly impact the valuation of a business. He suggested that the savings could multiply the business's sale price by 5 to 8 times the initial savings amount, highlighting the strategic importance of energy optimization in business planning.
