To most people, UOCAVA sounds like some exotic fruit. But to those of us working towards free, fair, honest, and transparent elections the term often causes concern due to the enormous opportunity for election fraud in the current implementation of UOCAVA, which is the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. This Act applies to certain U.S. citizens who desire to vote while overseas and provides the legal basis for their absentee voting requirements for federal offices. Linda and her guest, Heather Honey, discuss the importance of protecting the rights of UOCAVA voters while ensuring legal compliance at every stage of the process. Heather is the Executive Director of the Election Research Institute and the co-founder of Verity Vote, a firm that investigates and reports on issues impacting election systems. This issue affects every American citizen. Every election is important. Listen to learn how you can protect UOCAVA voters and the integrity of our elections. © Copyright 2024, Prosperity 101, LLC __________________________________________________________________ Use code P101 to order your custom flag from www.YourAmericanFlagStore.com. With only a small handful of weeks remaining until the general election, you may be wondering about how you or your nonprofit can get involved in voter assistance activities such as providing rides to the polls, registering voters, and helping voters vote by mail. Would you be surprised that these activities are often regulated by both state and federal law? On this episode, we'll discuss our Practical Guidance Voter Assistance resources series, created in partnership with Democracy Capacity Project, and explain some of the rules you should be thinking about in the final countdown to the big day. Attorneys for this episode: Tim Mooney Natalie Ossenfort Victor Rivera General Overview of Relevant Law · When engaging in any election-related activities there are several areas of law that your nonprofit should think about: o Internal Revenue Code: explains the types of activities your nonprofit is allowed to engage in accordance with the tax code § 501(c)(3)s: Keep it nonpartisan. No support or opposition of candidates. Allowed to engage in campaigns for or against ballot initiatives, constitutional amendments, bond measures, city charter amendments. Just remember that this activity may count as lobbying at the federal level. § 501(c)(4)s; (c)(5)s, (c)(6)s: Partisan political activities as secondary activities of org § PACs: Regulated by Section 527 of tax code. Partisan political work as focus, but different types of PACs may be restricted in terms of whether they can engage in coordinated vs. independent expenditures o Other federal laws, including the Federal Election Campaign Act: always going to be relevant in elections with federal candidates on the ballot § Provisional ballots available even if they aren't under state election laws (i.e. can vote provisionally for POTUS if there's a dispute as to registration status and resolve that later) § Accessible ballots required under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). § Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) requires states to provide absentee ballots for military personnel, their families, and U.S. citizens overseas in federal elections. § Voting Rights Act (VRA) · requires jurisdictions with significant populations of non-English-speaking citizens to provide bilingual election materials and assistance, ensuring all voters can understand and participate in the process. · allows observers from the Department of Justice or the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to monitor elections to ensure compliance with voting rights laws, especially in areas with a history of discrimination. o State law: Often regulates § Who, when, how you can register voters § Who is eligible to vote-by-mail (and when) § Line-warming activities designed to encourage voters to stay in line § Rules for poll watchers § Voter ID required in some states § And more! Practical Guidance Voter Assistance Series o Focuses on state law, but also includes some federal law tips throughout o (Questions answered include: o How can our organization help people vote by mail? o Can we help with a rides to the polls program? o How can we help voters already at the polls? o When might our work also trigger campaign finance laws? o Can we advocate for a new polling place? o Current states: o Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin o Texas line-warming example o Reminder that many states don't have polling places (in traditional sense) since they've shifted focus to vote-by-mail. On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, the conversation takes a deep dive into the complex and sensitive situation in Gaza, Palestine, Israel, and the broader Middle East, and how our perception here in America is being warped by misinformation from different sides. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. A Feeling of Déjà Vu for America On the evening of Feb. 20, 1939, the marquee of Madison Square Garden was lit up for the big event: "Pro American Rally." But it was the farthest thing from being American as can be. Uniformed members of pro-Hitler group The German American Bund carried American and nazi flags. That being said, In the last week of December 1942, fifty leading German-Americans (including baseball legend Babe Ruth) signed a declaration condemning nazis which appeared in ten major American daily newspapers. Ultimately, American patriots stopped the American nazis. Looking at the events this week at Columbia, MIT, NYU, and other elite US schools, they mirror much of the hate, horror and scale of The German American Bund. While some were there to genuinely support the civilians trapped in the ongoing conflict, there were others that openly supported Hamas' extremist actions. It was very ironic to see banners about women and LGBT+ groups support, when they are the most oppressed in the world that these people envision. What's even worse is that there were reasons to suspect that these protests were sponsored by people who don't want to get their own hands dirty. (Mis)Information is Rampant One of the downsides of our technological boom is the ease of access to information. Unfortunately, ease of access does not always mean a smart populace. As information is shared from peer to peer, information gets distorted, if not outright manipulated to suit their agendas, that sometimes the victim comes out on the other end as the one being ganged on, instead of the oppressor. This particularly true with social media sites, who has become the de-facto source of information for the younger generation. There was even a brief period where young people were lauding a speech that Bin Laden made to justify 9/11. Never mind the atrocities he and his jihadist group committed in the US and international stage, he made a great speech! Totally justified. Call to Arms Nazis have attacked America from within before. American patriots stopped them. The only question now is, will you and I empower radical jihadists nazis? Or will we stop them, like our ancestors did 78 years ago? To hear more of Christopher Lochhead's points on the matter, download and listen to this episode. Four decades ago, I helped staff the Senate Armed Services Committee in supporting Ronald Reagan's reversal of Jimmy Carter's budget cuts that had “hollowed out” the U.S. military. Tomorrow, that panel has an opportunity to begin an even more urgently needed salvation of our armed forces. The occasion will be a hearing on the nomination of Gen. Charles “C.Q.” Brown to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Will he help end not only Joe Biden's failure to adequately fund the Pentagon as a shooting war looms with the Chinese Communist Party? The Committee must also establish whether Gen. Brown will strongly support in the future, as he has to date, the Marxist “transformation” that's making Carter's hollow military look robust. We require uniformed leaders who oppose policies that weaken, demoralize and invite the defeat of our troops – and country. This is Frank Gaffney.

Hello, I'm May from Thailand.I grew up in a wealthy family and my parents gave me everything I wanted, except freedom. My mom watched my every move and when she couldn't do it herself, she employed someone to do it. I'm not even kidding guys. When I was 17, I came home from school to find the house full of guests. Uniformed servers were busy loading tables with all kinds of food."Mom, what's going on?"“May, darling, come sit next to your father and I.”Sitting across from mom was a scrawny-looking boy around the same age as me."May, the king and queen are here to ask for your hand in marriage. This is their son, your future husband!"I burst out laughing but stopped when I realized that no one else was laughing with me."Wait, you're serious?""Yes, now say hello and behave yourself."I shot from my seat and grabbed the table. “I will flip this table over mama!" What do you think of your city's news media? Maybe you think of reporters and photographers as an annoyance. Perhaps you view them as a necessary evil. Or—and this is the best, I think—do you look at them as professionals just doing their jobs, reporting the news? I've been a journalist for 30-plus years, and I can tell you that, while reporters sometimes make mistakes, very few are out to “get” you, as a firefighter. They're also generally not out to make your department look bad. So, the question is, how do you get the news media to help you? It's not hard. Just give them what they want—a good story—and they'll be happy. Don't act like there's something to hide, especially when there isn't anything to hide! My guest today will explain how to do that better. Robert Leonard has over 30 years of service as a firefighter, officer and EMT. Rob's been FDNY's Deputy Director of Public Information and Deputy Press Secretary for Uniformed and Emergency Services to the Mayor of the City of New York. He is an Assistant Chief of the Syosset Fire Department on Long Island and a Second Deputy Chief Instructor at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. He is also a senior executive at a national public relations firm, leading the public safety and local government practice, and a member of the Public Relations committee for the Firefighters Association of the State of New York.

Hello everyone! In today's episode I talk about China's siesta culture. Chinese people are used to taking a nap after lunch since childhood. School and company schedules usually accommodate the need of siesta with a longer lunch break than what is common in the US. The two main reasons for Chinese people's s siestas are their high-carb, heavy lunch and their long work/school day that needs refueling in the middle of the day. (Script and useful expressions below).Thank you for listening to 5 Minute Chinese. If you like this episode, kindly review and share this show. Let me know if you have any questions or comments. Have a great day!0:001. 午休 | Wǔxiū | lunch break | 休息 | xiūxí | rest | 闭目养神 | bì mù yǎngshén | Close your eyes and rest | 0:322. 上班 | Shàngbān | work, go to shift | 员工 | yuángōng | Staff | 利用 | lìyòng | use | 办 | bàn | manage, conduct | 个人 | gèrén | personal | 甚至 | shènzhì | even | 配备 | pèibèi | equip | 营业 | yíngyè | business | 间断 | jiànduàn | interruption |02:534. 饮食结构 | yǐnshí jiégòu | Diet重视 | zhòngshì | attach importance to碳水化合物 | tànshuǐ huàhéwù | carbohydrate血糖 | xiětáng | blood sugar加速 | jiāsù | accelerate上升 | shàngshēng | rise相比之下 | xiāng bǐ zhī xià | by contrast在乎 | zàihū | care犯困 | fànkùn | sleepy作息 | zuòxí | work and rest确实 | quèshí | really状态 | zhuàngtài | state5. 那今天关于中国的午睡文化就跟大家聊到这里。你们那儿也有午睡的文化吗?你喜欢午睡吗?如果喜欢这期节目,请帮我点赞转发。感谢您的收听。我们下期再见。

The debate on the place of officers at Pride has reached a fever pitch. The Mayor, D6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey, The Police Department, The Fire Department, and the Sheriff's have all decided to boycott SF Pride because of the decision to allow SFPD to march but not in uniform. Manny's brought together the Interim Executive Director of Pride Suzanne Ford with LGBTQ Liaison Officer Kathryn Winters to share their perspectives, share some context for the decisions, and provide an opportunity for the community to hear directly from both sides of this decision. Manny's is a place where tough nuanced conversations can happen and this is a continuation of our tough conversations series. While serving in the USAF, Carma ran into a USPHS officer at a professional meeting and learned about the opportunity. After 7 years in the USAF, Carma transferred her commission to the USPHS where she worked for another 14 years and retired at the rank of Commander.During her time in the USPHS, Carma also held a volunteer, additional duty as the chief recruiter for the dietitian professional category for 4 years. Episode discussion topics Our right to vote is under siege by proposals across 43 out of 50 states in the Union (Washington Post, March 11, 2021). This is one of the rare cases DC is fortunate not to have a statehouse. We provide a May round-up on what's passed, below under the more info section. First, we review a "brief" timeline on the Hokey Pokey dance for who could vote when and where within the United States. Thank you to Wikipedia for the info. (Full list here, accessed Jun 4, 2021). 1789 The Constitution of the United States grants the states the power to set voting requirements. Generally, states limited this right to property-owning or tax-paying white males (about 6% of the population).[1] However, some states allowed also Black males to vote, and New Jersey also included unmarried and widowed women, regardless of color. Since married women were not allowed to own property, they could not meet the property qualifications.[2] 1791 Vermont is admitted as a new state, giving the vote to men regardless of color or property ownership.[5] 1807 Voting rights are taken away from free black males and from all women in New Jersey.[2] 1870 The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prevents states from denying the right to vote on grounds of "race, color, or previous condition of servitude". Disfranchisement after Reconstruction era began soon after. Former Confederate states passed Jim Crow laws and amendments to effectively disfranchise African-American and poor white voters through poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses and other restrictions, applied in a discriminatory manner. During this period, the Supreme Court generally upheld state efforts to discriminate against racial minorities; only later in the 20th century were these laws ruled unconstitutional. Black males in the Northern states could vote, but the majority of African Americans lived in the South.[17][18] Women in Utah get the right to vote.[21] 1882 Chinese-Americans lose the right to vote and become citizens through the Chinese Exclusion Act.[11] 1883 Women in Washington Territory earn the right to vote.[24] 1887 Citizenship is granted to Native Americans who are willing to disassociate themselves from their tribe by the Dawes Act, making those males technically eligible to vote. Women in Washington lose the right to vote.[24] Women in Utah lose the right to vote under the Edmunds–Tucker Act.[25] Kansas women earn the right to vote in municipal elections.[20] Arizona, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, and South Dakota grant partial suffrage to women.[13] 1913 Direct election of Senators, established by the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, gave voters rather than state legislatures the right to elect senators.[31] White and African American women in the Territory of Alaska earn the right to vote.[32] Women in Illinois earn the right to vote in presidential elections.[25] 1914 Nevada and Montana women earn the right to vote.[20] 1917 Women in Arkansas earn the right to vote in primary elections.[20] Women in Rhode Island earn the right to vote in presidential elections.[25] Women in New York, Oklahoma, and South Dakota earn equal suffrage through their state constitutions.[25] 1918 Women in Texas earn the right to vote in primary elections.[33] 1920 Women are guaranteed the right to vote by the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In practice, the same restrictions that hindered the ability of non-white men to vote now also applied to non-white women. 1924 All Native Americans are granted citizenship and the right to vote through the Indian Citizenship Act, regardless of tribal affiliation. By this point, approximately two thirds of Native Americans were already citizens.[35][36] Notwithstanding, some western states continued to bar Native Americans from voting until 1948.[37] 1943 Chinese immigrants are given the right to citizenship and the right to vote by the Magnuson Act.[39] 1948 Arizona and New Mexico are among the last states to extend full voting rights to Native Americans, which had been opposed by some western states in contravention of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.[37][40] 1961 Residents of Washington, D.C. are granted the right to vote in U.S. Presidential Elections by the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution.[11] 1962-1964 A historic turning point arrived after the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren made a series of landmark decisions which helped establish the nationwide "one man, one vote" electoral system in the United States. In March 1962, the Warren Court ruled in Baker v. Carr (1962) that redistricting qualifies as a justiciable question, thus enabling federal courts to hear redistricting cases.[45] In February 1964, the Warren Court ruled in Wesberry v. Sanders (1964) that districts in the United States House of Representatives must be approximately equal in population.[46] In June 1964, the Warren Court ruled in Reynolds v. Sims (1964) that each chamber of a bicameral state legislature must have electoral districts roughly equal in population.[47][48][49] 1964 Poll Tax payment prohibited from being used as a condition for voting in federal elections by the Twenty-fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.[30] 1965 Protection of voter registration and voting for racial minorities, later applied to language minorities, is established by the Voting Rights Act of 1965.[11] This has also been applied to correcting discriminatory election systems and districting. In Harman v. Forssenius the Supreme Court ruled that poll taxes or "equivalent or milder substitutes" cannot be imposed on voters.[30] 1966 Tax payment and wealth requirements for voting in state elections are prohibited by the Supreme Court in Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections.[23] 1970 Alaska ends the use of literacy tests.[44] Native Americans who live on reservations in Colorado are first allowed to vote in the state.[50] 1971 Adults aged 18 through 21 are granted the right to vote by the Twenty-sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This was enacted in response to Vietnam War protests, which argued that soldiers who were old enough to fight for their country should be granted the right to vote.[31][51][52] 1973 Washington, D.C. local elections, such as Mayor and Councilmen, restored after a 100-year gap in Georgetown, and a 190-year gap in the wider city, ending Congress's policy of local election disfranchisement started in 1801 in this former portion of Maryland—see: D.C. Home rule. 1986 United States Military and Uniformed Services, Merchant Marine, other citizens overseas, living on bases in the United States, abroad, or aboard ship are granted the right to vote by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.[59] 2013 Supreme Court ruled in the 5–4 Shelby County v. Holder decision that Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. Section 4(b) stated that if states or local governments want to change their voting laws, they must appeal to the Attorney General.[62] Call to Action: Email or call your Congressional Senator to voice your support for HR1 - For the People Act of 2021 which passed the House and sits on the doorstep of the Senate. Now is a critical time. Also, it's worth mentioning that a more focused bill, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act seems to have enough support to pass the Senate, as of this moment anyway. Find out what it takes to vote in your county and get it taken care of, then vote in candidates who support everyone's access and right to vote. Your hosts: Michael V. Piscitelli and Raymond Wong Jr. More info According to Voting Laws Roundup: May 2021 by the Brennan Center for Justice, states have already enacted more than 20 laws this year that will make it harder for Americans to vote — and many legislatures are still in session. Between January 1 and May 14, 2021, at least 14 states enacted 22 new laws that restrict access to the vote. At least 61 bills with restrictive provisions are moving through 18 state legislatures.
