My conversation today is with artist, author, legal scholar and activist Olave Nduwanje. Working across anti-racism, LGBTQ rights, anti-capitalism and disability movements, Olave brings to this conversation a wonderfully expansive understanding of Blackness, queerness and trans identities. Olave calls us to an understanding of Blackness that is capacious, that contains within it the possibilities of everything we are and can be – and she offers that so many of the ideas we’ve internalised about our Blackness are inherently anti-Black. Olave discusses how her trans body is read by white and Black people alike, as an indication of some promised future; how she’s using her artistic practice to explore intra-communal conversations about intimacy and race; and why solidarity isn’t solidarity, unless you’re willing to give something up. Olave suggests that when we die, we’ll care more about whether we showed up for people than the things we surrounded ourselves with. Be sure to check out "Olave Talks". The history of B-P is naturally lengthy in detail. Knowing the brief history will help you gain insight as to the foundations of Scouting. Over 160 years ago on February 22nd (1857) Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell was born at home in London. His mother Henrietta Gace Powell and his father Professor Baden Powell an Oxford clergyman and academic lived in the Paddington area. By the time he was 8 years old, ‘Robert’ or ‘Stevie’ (Moms’ preferred name) wrote: “Laws for me when I am old”. B-P Loved nature and the outdoors. He was a pretty good artist and a resourceful student. On September 11, 1876, B-P received his army commission. Deployed with 13th Hussars in northern India. For the next 20 years, he was deployed all over Europe, Asia, and Africa. Germany, France, and Russia where he was spying for Great Britain. He developed Reconnaissance and Scouting training for the military. In October of 1899, B-P was deployed with 1000 troops in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War (South African War) in South Africa. Stationed at Mafeking with 18,000 enemy Duch troops surrounding it. While at Mafeking the book “Aids to Scouting for NCOs & Men” was published back in Great Britain. A “Cadet Corp” was formed from boys over 9 years. This developed into the “Patrol System”. Mafeking was under siege for 217 days without relief. B-P became a hero and promoted to Major-General. Returning home a few years later he was surprised that “Boys’ Brigades” had formed based on his book. The Brownsea Island Camp Experiment started on August 1, 1907. 20 Boys with 8 Adults, 4 Patrols over 8 days. The rest of 1907 “Scouting Scheme,” wrote the Scout Law, the ‘Crusade’ lecture tour. In 1908 Scouting for Boys was published (6 issues at 2 pence each)... As adult leaders in the largest youth movement in the world, we need to do some homework to fill out the rest of the Scouting story. Here is a timeline of events that were not covered in the video. 1909 The National Headquarters was set up in London, just ½ mile south of Buckingham Palace. 1909-1910 King Edward VII asked B-P to leave the army and do Scouting fulltime. 1910 The Boy Scouts of America became incorporated. 1912 B-P got married to Olave. 1912 King George V granted a Royal Charter to Scouting. 1914 The “Great War” started (First World War) Scouting helped the home front. 1916 Wolf Cubs started in England (known as Cub Scouts in the US in 1930). 1919 Gilwell Park was established (12 miles northeast of Buckingham Palace). 1920 First World Jamboree (3 miles west of Buckingham Palace). 1929 King George V conferred the title of 'Lord of Gilwell' on B-P 1932 Lord Somers appointed Chief Commissioner. 1937 World Jamboree (Netherlands) B-P gave the famous farewell speech. 1938 Moved to Nyeri Kenya for health reasons. 1939 B-P nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize along with others, including Hitler. The scandal led to no one being awarded that year. January 8, 1941 B-P Pasted away and was laid to rest at St Peter’s Churchyard. 1941 Lord Somers became ‘Chief Scout of the British Empire’. Only B-P was the ‘Chief Scout of the World’.

Activiste Olave Nduwanje (‘zwart, veganist, non-binaire trans femme, queer, feminist en Umurundikazi') is geboren in Burundi, als kind van een zakenman en een prinses, maar groeide op in Oostzaan. De eerste dertig jaar van haar leven deed ze haar uiterste best om een man zijn. Dat lukte alleen dankzij alcohol. Heel veel alcohol. “Door te stoppen met drinken kwam ik in contact met de kleine Olave, dat meisje dat altijd maar een jongetje moest blijven.   AIDS 2018 - Part I The International AIDS Conference occurs every two years somewhere around the globe. This year AIDS 2018 is held in Amsterdam. Many people may recall Melbourne hosting the event just four years ago – AIDS 2014. Our latest episode marks the opening day of AIDS 2018 in Amsterdam. The conference offers an opportunity for the international HIV and AIDS community to gather to find out the latest developments in the global response to the epidemic. Well, Well, Well's Cal was at the conference to adsorb the community mobilisation, and key findings from research which informs the way we look at and respond to the changing landscape of HIV in Australia and abroad. With the help of Michael back in the JOY 94.9 studios we were able to unpack just some of the highlights from the first day of AIDS 2018 including: Progress in the development of "Digital PrEP" which provides a new technological mechanism to study and monitor PrEP adherence - with Dr Sara H Browne, MD MPH Association Professor of Medicine from University of California San Diego & President, Specialists in Global Health Results from the the Partner2 Study which looked at serodifferent gay male couples further confirming that U=U, even amongst MSM - with Alison Rodger MD, University College London, UK Additional findings from the iFacts study around the possibility of feminizing hormone impacting the efficacy of PrEP amongst trans women - with Akarin Hiransuthikul MD from the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre The AIDS2018 conference its also the perfect platform for community activists and health advocates to voice their concerns and call for action on outstanding issues impacting the epidemic but often just the basic human rights of those communities disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. The AIDS 2018 Mobilsation March kicked off the conference focusing on the global issues being taken to the streets of Amsterdam by an international community of activists and health advocates such as: Olave Basabose, a non-binary trans femme, feminist, activist, lawyer, writer an politician. Olave is born in Burundi, at the age of nine she moved to the Netherlands. Annah Sango who comes from Zimbabwe and an advocate for young people from LGBTI and other communities – to maintain their health and well being and for them to know about their sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV/AIDS. Cal also spoke to those participating in the Mobilsation March as it continued along the streets of Amsterdam, blocking off the city until it finished at the conference centre. We praatte met niemand minder dan Nigeriaanse sociologe en FULL professor: Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí! Man’ en ‘vrouw’ werden vóór de westerse kolonisatie niet als gescheiden identiteiten beschouwd in het Afrikaanse denken. Volgens de Nigeriaanse sociologe Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí is gender dan ook een westers cultureel construct. Zij onderzocht het Yoruba-volk in Nigeria en ontdekte de sporen van ‘ungenderedness’. Waar volgens haar identiteit in het Westen moet passen in maatschappelijk geconstrueerde hokjes, is identiteit in het traditionele Afrikaanse denken juist vloeibaar. De westerse tweedeling tussen man en vrouw is echter ook het Afrikaanse denken ingeslopen, met alle negatieve gevolgen van dien. Daarom spoort Oyěwùmí vooral de transgender gemeenschap hun blik te wenden naar het continent Afrika en daar te ontdekken welke mogelijkheden er al bestaan of bestonden om gender te benden.Ondertussen was Anousha druk bezig met het dekoloniseren van de opera door Die Zauberflöte van Mozart even te ontdoen van de racisme en seksisme in het stuk YASS. Jess was invited to participate in a comedy workshop organised by the University of Melbourne, MICF and Women with Disability Victoria, which was delivered by the wonderful Nelly Thomas. Jess recently performed her set at a gig for the Disability Rights Commission. We discuss: having an eating disorder and other health issues from a young age, lack of accessibility to mental health services for those with physical disabilities, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), eating disorders and perfectionism, dealing with reputations and rumours in high school, being in 15 bands at once, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in her final years of school, being competitive and not saying No, perfectionism and burn out, the importance of pacing, taking the career path you want via the back doors, perspectives on Nursing from both sides of the bed, easing into the workforce, some massive life traumas, the Divine Divas of Sunbury, the accessibility challenges of being in a wheelchair, the blessings of being able to drive and live independently, the importance of pacing, being an Olave, making the most of what she has, raising awareness so people don’t suffer in silence, Jess’ super power, and Jess’ messages to not be afraid of speaking up, and to keep fighting on.
