Benefits of becoming a U.S. Citizen (Why You Should Become American)

EBMSCHOLARS

If You Become a US Citizen, You Will: 1. Have the right to vote. Lawful permanent residents are not exempt from US laws, taxes and other political measures. Think about becoming a US citizen in order to vote on political representatives as well as local, state and federal ballot measures. 2. Be able to run for public office. As a matter of fact, why not run for a political office yourself? You may not be able to be the president, but becoming a US citizen permits you to hold numerous public offices — just look at Arnold Schwarzenegger. 3. Be eligible for federal employment or benefits. If you want a career with the government, it’s possible — but you have to be a US citizen. And you may have to act fast — some government agencies do not consider new US citizens eligible for certain careers or benefits if they do not start the naturalization process within six months of their eligibility to do so. 4. Be able to travel abroad for long periods of time. Many green card holders travel frequently, especially if many of their family members are in other countries. But if permanent residents spend more than six months a year traveling, they might not be admitted back into the United States — their green card may be considered “abandoned” and they will have to start the immigration process all over again. One of the perks of becoming a US citizen? You can travel for as long as you want with no restrictions! 5. Not be deported. It doesn’t just happen to undocumented immigrants — permanent residents are eligible for deportation, and it doesn’t even have to be a very serious offense. Some believe that courts are harder on non-US citizens, and non-citizen immigrants and permanent residents don’t have as many options to take a plea bargain or do jail time or community service. 6. Be able to sponsor your family for green cards. Becoming a US citizen means you can sponsor relatives for a green card — everyone from your parents and siblings to your spouse. Additionally, if you have children under the age of 18 in your custody, they will automatically become citizens along with you. 7. Benefit from US tax laws. If your spouse is also a US citizen, you can bequeath real estate to him or her that will be exempt from property taxes. US tax laws also allow other free exchanges of real estate between married US citizens. 8. Become eligible for free money. Would you like to apply for university scholarships or be eligible for in-state college tuition? Perhaps you want to try and get a government grant or monetary award. Many of these options are available only to US citizens. 9. Become a US passport holder. Only US citizens can get US passports, a coveted travel document. When you travel abroad with a US passport, you’ll be supported by US Embassies or Consulates if you need any assistance. 10. Not necessarily have to give up your current citizenship. While it’s true that the US has new citizens renounce their previous citizenships in taking the Oath of Allegiance during naturalization ceremonies, you can ask to omit that part of the oath if you want to retain your previous citizenship as well. While dual citizenship used to be banned in the United States, the Supreme Court struck down those laws — so if it’s the only thing keeping you from becoming a US citizen, it may be time to reconsider! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ebmscholars/support

#8 Amy Harris explains the concept of genealogical consciousness, which goes beyond information and instead influences the way we see not only our ancestors, but people in our world now. Genealogy has evolved over the decades and Amy sees a need for it to evolve even more in order to help make our world a better place as we are less judgmental and more forgiving. Coming to know the stories of our ancestors and thinking of them as real people instead of names and dates can change how we see people we meet everyday. In this episode Amy shares:The difference between genealogical consciousness and genealogical knowledge [7:25]How genealogy has evolved from a British and American perspective [11:48]Why we need to be careful when looking at ethnicity results [14:54] A student’s experience deciding she didn’t know a relative’s whole story [ 21:06]Not judging an ancestor’s sister from a modern perspective [23:51]Her simple advice for those beginning their family history journey [28:22]About Amy:Amy Harris, PhD, AG®, is the current Family History Program Coordinator at BYU. A native of Ogden, Utah, she was lucky enough to be raised by spectacularly good parents and particularly stellar siblings. Her research focuses on families, women, and gender in eighteenth-century Britain, though she has also written on the history of genealogy and Mormon history. She is particularly interested in the way family and social relationships inform one another. Her first book, Siblinghood and Social Relations in Georgian England (2012) explored sibling relationships and their connections to political and social ideas of equality. Recently her article “Early Mormonism’s Expansive Family and the Browett Women” received the 2018 Mormon History Association Best Article Award. She is in the early stages of a book, There is Only Us, which explores genealogical consciousness. Economy Watch
Is the better US jobs report lagging the real economy?

But first, a key index of American business spending, and especially for investment, has come in at its lowest in two years. And the impact of the trade war on the two main participants is becoming clearer. China’s exports to the US of goods that were slapped with tariffs dropped -14%, down by a total of -US$18 bln in the year to June. This was equivalent to 3% of China's total annual shipments to the US. America suffered a heavier blow, with tariff-hit exports to China falling -38%, or by -$23 bln. This drop was equivalent to about -15% of all American annual exports to China. And this is official US trade data. And China is getting clearer and more direct - its goodwill gesture to buy more US farm products is conditional on being treated as an equal. A Beijing insider's social media account has said these purchases won't happen if the US continues to "flip-flop" in its positions. In its own turnabout, China's investment in projects outside the country are drying up quickly. The Westland/Yili deal is an anomaly. Only $US$35 bln has been committed in the first half of 2019, the lowest since 2013. That represents a -75% drop from the peak of such M&A activity in the first half of 2016. China is increasingly worried about the rise and rise of the iron ore price. And their peak steel trade group has now called for authorities to step in to control the market price, calling for "relevant government departments” to crack down on "monopolistic and intentionally unreasonable” pricing, The call saw iron ore prices fall nearly -4% on Friday. Miners BHP and Rio Tinto's share prices also fell. In Japan, officials are turning optimistic about their economic prospects after industrial production data turned higher. Now their business conditions index is reflecting that. The prospect of a recession is fading in Japan and economic growth becomes the new reality again. Globally, May data for international passenger air travel showed solid growth, increasing by +4.3% in year-on-year terms. However, the trend rate of growth has clearly slowed over recent months. In the Asia/Pacific region it was up less at +4.0%. Did you know that we have a series called Understanding China? New Zealand’s trade relationship with the Middle Kingdom comes with layers of complexity. We are the ant; they are the elephant. This is a series that helps you navigate it all and keep it in perspective. You can find it at interest.co.nz/understanding-china In the US, non-farm payrolls rose much more than expected in June, up +224,000 and smoothing out the very low May result. But that May result was actually revised even lower. April was too. The average for the two months isn't flash. The average for the past three months is below par as well. In this June result, factory payrolls only rose a modest +17,000 reinforcing the weak survey results that the regional Feds have been reporting. In its semi-annual report to Congress, the Fed said the trade war tariffs are having a material and negative impact on American manufacturing. Most of the payroll gains in June were from hiring in healthcare, company admin jobs, local government and in transportation. These four accounted for about 70% of the overall rise. The other 22 categories accounted for the rest. Wall Street was down on these results, figuring that the US Fed is now less likely to add monetary juice any time soon if current payroll growth is running at about its 2018 average. The US Fed next reviews its policy rate on August 1 (NZT). Given that US economic growth in Q2 seems to be running at only +1.3%, the chances of a rate cut, while they may have receded, are not zero. Still, with their mandate to both foster full employment and price stability, with the US jobless rate now at 3.7% and inflation is at 1.8%, it will be hard to make the case that some emergency policy shift is required. It's complicated. In Canada, it might be even more complicated. Their inflation is running at 2.4%, but their jobs data for June was particularly weak, with jobs falling and their unemployment rate rising. In Germany things are clearer, even if they are not good. Factory orders took an unexpectedly large dip in May, down almost -9%, and that is much more than the -5% fall in the previous month. For a very large economy, shifts as large as these have global implications. The US Treasury 10 year yield is now at 2.04%, a +9 bps jump on the US payrolls result. Germany’s however, are at a record low, at -0.4%. Gold is down to US$1,398/oz and a fall of -US$16 in the Friday session. US oil prices are little-changed. They are now just on US$57.50/bbl. The Brent benchmark is also little-changed at US$64.50. The Kiwi dollar is down -100 bps in the past week against the US dollar, half of that coming Friday night as the US dollar strengthened. It is now at 66.2 USc. On the cross rates we are also lower over the week at 94.9 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged at 59 euro cents. That all pushes the TWI-5 down to just on 71.1.
