Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick explore how Steps 6 and 7 of the twelve-step recovery process can help your loved one's journey and improve their relationship with you. Step 6 is about letting go of what holds you back, while Step 7 is seeking help to make those changes. Together, these steps focus on acceptance and humility, which are key to long-term recovery.     Timestamps and Discussions: 3:33 - 5:27Matt explains how Steps 6 and 7 go hand-in-hand. Now is the time to stop blaming others and acknowledge your flaws.   5:28 - 7:11Ryan talks about how addiction is like a ticking time bomb. Addicts often sabotage their success, and Ryan shares how his behavior led to setbacks in his radio career. These flaws resurface because they become a crutch.   7:46 - 10:55The discussion dives into different types of flaws that hinder recovery. A key issue for addicts is control—whether it's over conversations, relationships, or outcomes. A higher power is vital to letting go of these control issues.   12:12 - 13:17Flaws are obstacles, but they can be removed. Matt and Ryan discuss how, if an addict works hard, these obstacles can be turned into something positive.   13:19 - 16:30Recovery is about practice, not perfection. Ryan reflects on his three years in recovery, noting that each year brings more self-awareness. Matt explains how flaws can make us sicker and teach us more about our disease.   18:10 - 19:32 Matt and Ryan desire more healing. They emphasize the importance of recognizing flaws and praying for their removal. 21:00 - 24:00 Closing thoughts Resources:  You can find us on X and Instagram: @sobriety_pod. Global Gurus ranks John a Top 15 global leadership expert, a list he has been on since 2007. In this episode, Jordan and John discuss: Infusing grace into leadership  Compassion and self-care  Expressing your empathy  Why grace is important Key Takeaways When in crisis, effective leaders take care of their people, they take care of themselves, and they plan for the future. The key is to infuse that framework with grace. Leaders must let their people know that they have their back.  Compassion is all about recognizing the pain and suffering that others experience and helping to alleviate that if possible and appropriate. In the pursuit of that compassion, many leaders neglect to care for themselves. However, in order to continuously support others, a leader must give themselves compassion, grace, and care as well.  Compassion is the expression of empathy. When you see somebody in need or in pain, what you decide to do about the situation is truly what counts. Be present for people and offer your support.  Grace is essential for recognizing the better nature of others and overcoming prejudice, as it allows us to see beyond our own self-protection and threat responses.  “The easiest thing that well-intentioned leaders do is take care of their people because leadership is other-directed.” —  John Baldoni Connect with John Baldoni:   Website: https://johnbaldoni.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jbaldoni/  Connect with Jordan:  For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com  Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

I mean, you're looking at somebody who can be a class a jerk from time to time. And so I am mindful of how my quick words or snotty snide remarks might affect someone. That can hold me back. Thoughts on Breathing On the topic of breathing, In the book, I quote the work of Dr. Sharon Melnick, Ph.D. She's a clinical psychologist on the topic of resilience. Dr. Melnick talks about breathing techniques, as does Donald Altman, whom I also quote. So breathing from the diaphragm is important. But when you are speaking, do what opera singers do; breathe from your diaphragm, so you're more filled with air. When we do this deep breathing thing, we are becoming more physically centered, and I like to think that we're also emotionally centered that way too, Bruce. BJ Thompson is an absolute legend and, truth be told, this conversation felt like a one-on-one coaching session (that you get to listen to). BJ was behind one of the largest Christian movements in modern history (the 116 Movement) that reached millions of people. He has continued as a coach, author (Awaken a Better You: 4 Simple Steps to Create the Life You Want), executive director for a nonprofit (Build a Better Us) all alongside his gorgeous family living in Atlanta, Georgia. BJ's goal is to help individuals step into all that God can do in us and then coach on how to release that into the world around us. In this episode we talk about what observations BJ has about this generation, why change is so hard, how to make the most of being single, and what it looks like to live an awake life. Be ready, because this episode will have you running laps around your room and ready to change the world. BJ outlines a little bit of his personal story on today's podcast and challenges us to apply his lessons to OUR story.  I really enjoyed the interview.    BJ said it best when he said that his transformation began when “I stopped allowing my circumstances to dictate my life.  You have everything you need.  You simply need to understand the process to awakening you.”BJ's four steps Desperation – Information – Application – Transformation – they are ‘simple' steps, but make no mistake, they are not easy.  Nothing worth having is easy, though.Amazon link to the book:  CLICK HEREFollow BJ on InstagramLearn more about his company – Build a Better Us Thanks for listening in to the Uncommon Leader Podcast and making it part of your personal development journey.  Please take just a minute share this podcast with that someone you know that you thought of when you heard this episode.Until next time, Go and Grow Champions! Thanks for listening in to the Uncommon Leader Podcast.
