Link to Transcript: https://tinyurl.com/2r63e6tn Episode summary: Whether it's news notifications or work emails, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the stresses of our time every moment of every day. But what if there was something we could do to rekindle the greatest joys of our pasts? How might that shift how we feel in the present moment? Simply reflecting on happy memories has been shown in a lab to reduce stress, activate the reward center in our brain, and uplift our mood. This week, Palestinian-American poet and author Naomi Shihab Nye reminisces on happy memories from her youth and finds the practice soothes her and sparks joyfulness. We also hear from neuroscientist Mauricio Delgado about how the practice changes the way we think and feel, and which types of happy memories serve us best. Practice: For one week or more, spend 5-10 minutes each day writing in response to the following prompt: Think about good memories you have from your past. Write a few paragraphs describing them and one event that you still remember to this date. Please provide as many details as possible, including who was there, so that another person reading what you wrote could understand how you felt at that time. Today's guests: Naomi Shihab Nye is a Palestinian-American poet and author. Her new book of poetry, Grace Notes, will be available May 7. Think of a meal or dish that is linked to your culture. Reflect on what it looks and tastes like, as well as when you would eat this dish. Recall whoever would normally make this dish for you, and any stories that might have told you about it. Refocusing your attention on the dish, consider all the different ingredients that went into it, tracing them back to where they came from. Reflect on how generations of your family have been nourished from these sources, all leading up to you. Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes - “From there,  just talk about being resilient and just really trying to continue to press forward and not be like the people that we hung out with.  I didn't want to be in that lifestyle the rest of my life, so that's kinda how I started pulling myself out of the pit.”   3:22“This looks like it's going in the right direction, and they were supportive.  They weren't shoving stuff down my throat.  They weren't telling me, you know, it was really weird because it was more positive reinforcement instead of negative, it wasn't about punishment, it was about, ‘hey look, if you do this, look at what this will lead to.'” 14:33“Listen, if it's not life or death, it really isn't life or death, right.  Don't make it life or death.” 21:05“Just go do what you want to do and really don't ask us to approve it because we want you to do what you want to do. But if you're gonna pick, you better give it 100% effort, what we've been telling you since little league days.” 26:39“That's what I tell kids when I'm talking to them. Be proud of what you're going through because you're learning so much and you're so battle tested. The things that get some of these kids upset today, it's not going to upset you because you've gone down the rabbit hole deep, and you've survived.” 29:43“I tell all these guys the same thing; make each other better. You're going to have ups and downs and it's just a matter of working through them.  You chose to marry each other for a reason, don't forget that reason!” 35:15 Guest Bio - Kurt Varricchio redefines the meaning of a difficult childhood in his intimate memoir, Behind in the Count: My Journey from Juvenile Delinquent to Baseball Agent. Whether it was trying to fill his empty stomach with one last scoop of Ovaltine, getting tied to a tree, being punished with a wrench, or sleeping on the rooftops of local strip malls, Kurt's survival is nothing short of miraculous. After losing his father at two-years-old, his childhood commenced in a dilapidated home where physical and emotional abuse ran rampant. So, Kurt did what he had to do to survive: run. And steal. After several trips to juvenile hall and group homes across the state of Florida, law officials, prison guards, and even his own family thought his fate was sealed—right behind those impenetrable bars. Kurt was ultimately removed from his family and placed in Florida's Foster Care System just before his 12th birthday. It would've been easy to quit, but this isn't Kurt. Even as a child, he knew he didn't want his broken past to define him. He persevered, focusing on his academic and emotional development. After graduating from high school with a 4.0 grade point average, Kurt received a full ride to Florida State University, then continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Master's in Education. In search of a “new normal”, Kurt understood that education was paramount. Eventually, Kurt obtained his law degree and has been working in professional sports since 1995, first in the NFL and MLB, then as a sports agent. Providing a first-hand glimpse of what it takes to transform a chronic juvenile delinquent into a productive member of society, Kurt reflects on his childhood with a poignant examination of the hard work required to battle when the odds are against you. No matter how behind you are in the count, Kurt reminds us that you can always mold yourself into the person you want to be. Show Notes - 0:00 - What I Meant to Say Podcast Intro0:23 - Introducing Kurt Varricchio0:50 - Welcome to Kurt2:06 - Take Us to Your Roots and Early Life3:37 - How Old Were You When You First Went to Juvenile Hall?5:09 - How Do You Have Such a Sharp Memory of Traumatic Stories?6:46 - Concept of Community and Bonding Wherever You Are9:35 - Youngest of Four Brothers11:43 - I Met My Foster Mother at the Age of 1213:28 - How Long Did it Take You to Feel Safe?15:20 - Were There Other Kids in the House?16:58 - How Did Sports and Theater Lead to Baseball?18:57 - What Did You Learn from the Ability to Perform?19:45 - Reflecting on Childhood Chaos Vs. #18 Nancy Stratford has researched her family history for over 50 years and still has not reached the point of being “finished.” Nancy looks for ways to share what she learns with family and strangers alike, like writing a family cookbook or a local history of the Island Park, Idaho area. Through her dedication throughout her life she has learned about hundreds of people who are part of her family tree.In this episode Nancy shares:How features of FamilySearch and Ancestry.com help her learn new things about her relativesThe time a visit to a cemetery resulted in heaven-sent informationHow tangible items sometimes help prove family storiesThe book she wrote to share not only her family stories, but others in the communityThe story of how a favorite family dessert with Pennsylvania Dutch roots didn’t receive a warm welcome in the WestAbout Nancy:Nancy Stratford was born in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania as Nancy Lorraine Long. Her grandmother was the owner of the Bigg’s Family restaurant and she grew up waitressing in the Pocono Mountains. Nancy was the oldest of 3 girls and upon graduation went to Gettysburg College where she graduated in Biology with minors in Physics and Math. She started graduate school but became ill and soon married. Nancy had 3 children and moved frequently in her first marriage. She divorced and married her true sweetheart Ray Stratford who had 3 children of his own. Together they would become the “Brady Bunch family” and were married for 43 years. Ray and Nancy met and lived in upstate New York for many years, Ray worked at General Electric as a Harmonics Engineering expert. Nancy ran a food co-op, and became a professional volunteer, writing newsletters, serving as the PTA president, and active church involvement including teaching 8 years of Early Morning seminary (6:00 am) to high school students. They retired in 1990 and moved to Island Park Idaho, where Ray had maintained family property. Here they built a second cabin near the families original Tie Hack Cabin. Ray and Nancy served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Johannesburg South Africa during the end of Apartheid. They traveled the world from Egypt to Sweden. When living in Island Park, Idaho Nancy became the President of the local Historical Society. Nancy began writing weekly articles for the local newspaper on historical topics. One article series written on the Nez Perce Band was submitted for a National Award for Western writers. Nancy won first place. This prompted her to think about writing a full book on the History of Island Park. She had collected first-hand information, stories and knowledge. But she thought about the project with little progress for over 10 years. When Ray was in his last year fighting cancer, Nancy promised him she would finish the book. With the help of her daughter, Nancy put down the information needed to write her first professionally printed book. Nancy has started and maintained several book groups over her lifetime and currently reads about 2 books a week. Being the oldest living member of her extended family, she claims nearly 100 close relatives. They all know of her love of people, place and reading. Genealogy has evolved over the decades and Amy sees a need for it to evolve even more in order to help make our world a better place as we are less judgmental and more forgiving. Coming to know the stories of our ancestors and thinking of them as real people instead of names and dates can change how we see people we meet everyday. In this episode Amy shares:The difference between genealogical consciousness and genealogical knowledge [7:25]How genealogy has evolved from a British and American perspective [11:48]Why we need to be careful when looking at ethnicity results [14:54] A student’s experience deciding she didn’t know a relative’s whole story [ 21:06]Not judging an ancestor’s sister from a modern perspective [23:51]Her simple advice for those beginning their family history journey [28:22]About Amy:Amy Harris, PhD, AG®, is the current Family History Program Coordinator at BYU. A native of Ogden, Utah, she was lucky enough to be raised by spectacularly good parents and particularly stellar siblings. She is particularly interested in the way family and social relationships inform one another. Her first book, Siblinghood and Social Relations in Georgian England (2012) explored sibling relationships and their connections to political and social ideas of equality. Recently her article “Early Mormonism’s Expansive Family and the Browett Women” received the 2018 Mormon History Association Best Article Award.
