Question: What would jazz music sound like if it had been born in a country without patriarchy; taught without bias and performed on a stage with radical inclusivity? That's what jazz titan Terri Lyne Carrington says is the foundation behind Berklee College of Music's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Terri Lyne is the founder and artistic director of the Institute and a professor at Berklee, her alma mater. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, I spend time with Terri Lyne Carrington, getting deep into this question along with how to lift women and nonbinary individuals in this historically male dominated industry, creating a new bandscape that reveals the multitude of different voices in jazz. Terri Lyne is a drum major for women and nonbinary individuals in the jazz ecosystem. She's also a highly successful drummer/percussionist, a bandleader, composer and producer, an artistic director of a couple of organizations, a writer with two books, and an educator. On Terri Lyne's website, she displays many photos of the extraordinary talent that she met through her musician father's friends. You see her standing between drummers Roy Haynes and Tony Williams; Art Blakey is sitting on the floor next to Terri Lyne while she plays the drums; another has Buddy Rich next to her while she's on the drums. Not your typical teenager's hangout of friends nor upbringing experiences. She readily acknowledges her home environment was one of privilege and enriching for a young prodigy. Terri Lyne dedicates her life to reaching back to today's young women and nonbinary individuals bent on changing the faces of jazz, on and behind the bandstand. We most certainly spend time on her 2023 Grammy winning album New Standards Vol. 1 on the CANDID label and the related book “New Standards Vol. 1: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers,” published by Berklee Press. Two tracks of music from the album are included in this episode. The personnel for the album: Terri Lyne Carrington-drums/percussion; Kris Davis-piano; Linda May Han Oh-bass; Nicholas Payton-trumpet; and Matthew Stevens, guitar.  Uplifted Hearts by Shamie Royston; featuring Ravi Coltrane-tenor sax; Val Jeanty-electronics; Elena Pinderhuges-flute; Negah Santos-percussion; and Shadrack Oppong-spoken word. Throw It Away by Abbey Lincoln; featuring: Somi-vocal; Melanie Charles-vocal; and Negah Santos-percussion. Terri Lyne Carrington's portfolio is extensive, bold, and rich. If you are unfamiliar with it, I encourage you to check it out and listen to her music in her discography. The next episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds will be in early 2024. I'm taking some medical time off until then. This is the first year of this podcast. Thanks so much to all my guests and to you for making this a great year for me. If you have not subscribed, do so. You'll be one of the first to know when a new episode is released. Support live jazz wherever you are. Be safe. Steve Braunginn Thanks to CANDID Records for the music. Bartees Strange reflects on important moments during his musical development, including: Learning to sing alongside his opera and gospel singer mother, who brought him to most of her performances as a child, until eventually he was singing alongside her. “There's something magical being a child in an opera Hall, hearing sound without microphones, bouncing off of the wood, bouncing off of the space, and then looking up on stage and seeing like a 5'2” black woman who's your mom just fill it. And it's like, ‘I know not everybody's moms do this.'” Seeing the hardcore band Norma Jean in a church basement when he was in middle school, and realizing that music — especially live music — has the power to make an entire room full of people feel an energetic connection. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is just a music thing. Like, this is just what happens when music works, regardless of a classical space, hardcore space, or like a gospel space, like music can just do this. And I was just like, ‘how do I wield this magical power?'” Moving to New York after a stint working in politics in Washington, D.C., and finding inspiration in the music scene he plugged into there. “I grew up in a very rural area of Oklahoma and dealt with a lot of racism and questions about who I was and who I was allowed to be, and I don't think I was fully comfortable in my body until I moved to New York City and I started meeting all these artists — like are you familiar with the band L'Rain, Taja Cheek's band, and Kia and Melanie Charles? These black artists in Brooklyn who I honestly fell in love with and was so inspired by, because I always felt so alone and singular. My whole life, I was the only black kid. And in my musical space, I was often the only black person. And when I was making records, I was often the only black person in the studio, and people didn't listen to me, they didn't think I knew what I was talking about. I was struggling with even trusting my gut on knowing if I knew what I was talking about. I had listened to the gaslighting so much that I don't think I even knew who I was until I saw those artists and I was able to connect with them on a level where I was like, ‘Oh I'm like you. I'm not weird. Actually this is what *we* do.' And being around them it kind of created the space for me to spread my wings and try some stuff and feel comfortable sharing music with people who understood my experience and where I was coming from, and then once that happened, I was kind of able to lay it all out.” How his goals have evolved between his 2020 debut album, Live Forever, and his recently released sophomore LP, Farm To Table. “Honestly, I wanted to kind of show people it wasn't a fluke, like, I could do it again. And that was also why I put it out so fast. I was like, ‘I'm not letting three years pass before I drop another one. Because I don't want people to think ‘Oh, like, that was cute,' I want them to be like, ‘Oh, Bartees, this dude is a pretty serious cat. He's gonna stick around.'” What he has planned for his first major headlining tour in North America, and why you have to see openers Pom Pom Squad, They Hate Change and Spring Silver. The tour is on the road until 12/19/22. Get tickets HERE.

Before we start, I want to give a major thanks to everyone who's been on the podcast this season, along with a massive thanks to you, the listener. I say it every season but the fact that you're proactively taking the time to listen to this is huge and it truly means the world to me. Season 4 was such a wild journey, a true blast of technicolor of people from various walks of life. Getting to bring you this was a major life experience for me, largely in reminding me of the importance of other people; why we need to celebrate our differences and take stock of how we all have stories to tell. My guest today is a prime example of that, Brooklyn-born and raised artist Melanie Charles. She is a jazz musician who refuses to be boring and in turn; she refuses to bore you. Her album, Y'all Don't (Really) Care About Black Women, is both a reworking of famous originals while also being an outward mirror of Melanie's experiences as a black woman on this place we call earth. On today's episode, we talk about the deeply personal nature of crafting this body of work and share some heartwarming laughs about navigating the world in our black skin. Melanie will be playing a selection of shows in Canada, Europe, and the UK soon, along with a free show in Central Park on July 16th. Be sure to visit her website tour dates. Season 5 of the podcast will be kicking off in September, be sure to follow me on Instagram and Twitter so you don't miss out on updates!

A talented flautist trained as an opera singer, Melanie Charles wanted to make a splash with her Verve Records debut, Y'all Don't (Really) Care About Black Women. She taught herself to sample and tackled a slate of songs by some of jazz's all-time greatest vocalists, from Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. The result is a bold and expansive meditation on music and the many civil rights that permeate to this day, hitting a kind of fever pitch in recent years. Charles joins us to discuss her journey, the role of meditation and building on the work of some of music's biggest names.

As broadcast February 3, 2022 with plenty of vintage for your new podcast look.  Tonight we mark the date of Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina" going to #1 in 1989 by not playing that joint, but rather the title track to the album "Loc'ed After Dark," which is true Tone Smith if you asked us (which you didn't, but it's our show).  First hour full of new and recent funk & soul releases for our Sampled first hour, with cuts from Moonchild, Kutiman, Darius, along with a Nina Simone remix by HONNE being highlights.  Second hour was also a busy affair, as it's a big Friday upcoming in the world of rock and a lot of new albums got announced too.  However, the big news is two breakups, with Black Country, New Road's front man calling it quits, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones doing the same.  Both situtations are pretty murky as far as details, but kind of sad on both fronts especially the former, as their sophomore album is set for release this Friday!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Tone Loc – Loc'ed After DarkDaytoner – TimeMelanie Charles feat Marlena Shaw – Woman of the Ghetto (Reimagined)Mica Millar – Preacher ManMoonchild feat Rapsody – Love I Need Swatkins feat Moorea Masa & The Mood – Lost & Alive Part II (31:51)Darius feat Khadja Bonet – NOTHING TO METopher James & Biscuit Brigade – Waiting on the ColorsNurdjana – What If I Love YouVendredi Sur Mer – Le LacDJ Cam – Tropical GypsyKutiman feat Mejja – TimamNina Simone – My Baby Just Cares For Me (HONNE Remix) Part III (60:04)Korn – ForgottenThe Linda Lindas – Growing UpLucy Dacus – Kissing LessonsBloc Party – The Girls are FightingGlacier Veins – AutonomyBlack Country, New Road – Bread Song Part IV (92:02)Gregor Barnett –Driving Through the NightThe Smile – The SmokeMighty Mighty Bosstones – The Impression That I GetRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – The Way It ShattersPuppy – And Watched It GlowBright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh (feat. The help of talented musicians and mixers helped Melanie create the sound she was looking for. To create her versions of the songs she chose, Melanie faced the challenge of working on her songs during the Pandemic lock-down. She had to pivot to create these songs at home instead of in a studio, truly putting blood, sweat and tears into the project.  As an artist, she feels the need to reflect on experiences and share them with others, and Melanie sees her album as a way of connecting with her community about past and current struggles with racial tension. The Brooklyn born and raised, Melanie Charles, is one of these artists. Over the past few decades, she has made a name for herself through dynamic engagements with jazz, soul and R&B. Her bold genre-bending style has been embraced by a range of artists including Wynton Marsalis, SZA, Mach-Hommy, Gorillaz and The Roots. In 2021, she appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk and stunned with her eclectic style. Through it all, she has remained committed to making music that pushes listeners to consider new possibilities—both socially and politically. “Make Jazz Trill Again,” a project that she launched in 2016, demonstrates her allegiance to everyday people, especially the youth and is focused on taking jazz from the museum to the streets. “I love jazz, I really fell in love with it deeply. But I was interested in young people interacting with it,” Charles says. The album Y'all Don't (Really) Care About Black Women is reflective of Charles' tremendous versatility and imagination as an artist but of also her deep care for community. Once upon a time vocalist Melanie Charles (a.k.a. D'Flower) had a sartorial period where she'd deftly mix contrasting patterns. Her mother likened her daughter's music to this phase; she couldn't be more apt. Melanie's musical style is a brew of her jazz training, soul influences and operatic dreams and perhaps, a splash of just about everything else, including her Haitian heritage. Last year's Rat Habitat EP (Guns That Shoot Bubbles with Jordan Peters) is the proof, but only a sliver of her electric talent. Melanie plays the flute, self-orchestrates with a SP202 classic sampler and the piano was her first instrument at age five. For this born-and-bred Brooklyn musician, her forthcoming solo album will truly reflect all the facets of her artistry. This episode features two Rat Habitat songs plus a TMT-exclusive live performance of Melanie's unreleased "Without Us" from her TBA solo project.
