Rod Serling singing Christmas carols, garden variety anxiety, and the dog show opener for a Beastie Boys concert. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer) OKONSKI Entrance Music [RELEASE DATE: 2/28/2025]- https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski "After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023's debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next. Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole's studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can't emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member [of the band] because of the space he's curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine label head at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs. From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song. While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery's bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee. Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.' and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It's definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”" Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections Merch: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/merch Durand Jones & The Indications: Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/durand Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Aaron Frazer Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos
(superfly.fm)

Blastin'' 7s” from Colemine and Stax - Memphis being a huge Organ town, also Jamacians participation with the organ, the reggae organ groove known as the Bubble. The key to the bubble is, of course, the rhythm. The right hand plays predictably on beats two and four (think of the classic reggae-guitar "chick - chick"). The spiciness is in the left hand, which plays all up-beats (or the "ands"). Music: The Organauts, Jimmy McGriff, The Meters, Orgōne, Cyril Nevil, Small Faces, Bubaza, Leroy Smart, and Jimmy Willis to name just a few! Fresh from the seat at the end of the bar, we'd like to welcome Alex (Beer & Vinyl) joining the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts fresh off his recent sit down with the owner of of Plaid Room Records and Coleman Records of Loveland, Ohio - Terry Cole. Colemine is a label home to some of the best indie + soul music out today, featuring artists like Durand Jones, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (DLO3), The Jive Turkeys, and Kendra Morris (to name a few), and home to others on sub-labels Karma Chief Records, Remined Records, etc. The conversation touches many points in the history of both the Colemine label and the Plaid Room Records shop itself. Arguably one of the best shops (and labels) in the country, it's a great walk from the origins to present day, and you'll find it (and future conversations) from Alex here on Vinyl Community Podcasts going forward! Working at a piano shop, the Magnolia grandiflora, and getting lofty. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications) Okonski 'Magnolia' Album Announcement- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5o_pqyRqXc ETHIOPIQUES vol 1-30: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7gkMJUiZc7hglZNsTrdTvt “The studio at 122 West Loveland Avenue was not an unfamiliar space for Steve Okonski, the leader of his eponymous trio Okonski. Ever since the Colemine label set up shop in Loveland, Ohio it has been a host to a number of groups passing through town, including Durand Jones and the Indications who all of this trio's members have connections to. After setting aside some time in winter of 2020, Okonski, trained initially as a classical pianist, invited Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery and Aaron Frazer to work on an album that was initially planned to be beat driven and fully composed trio instrumentals. After finishing this first session with some improvisations, a second week was booked in the summer of 2021 to try and capture some more of that spontaneous energy. During this session, the tracks were all improvised and recorded live to a Tascam 388 during several late nights at the Colemine HQ. They were structured to allow the group's collective intuition to fully shape the melodies and arcs of the music.” Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/okonski-magnolia Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/album/magnolia Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski?fbclid=PAAaZ7UNGxDxrsIH2z3zq5aOTbjFiUjXEVEjJzyPs0rmxFZHTh31FuguBR69U Merch: https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/okonski-magnolia Durand Jones & The Indications: Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.... As broadcast October 6, 2022 with plenty of purified water from Lake Minnetonka. Tonight we go back to 2016 where, in the unfortunate aftermath of Prince's all-too-early demise, his estate decided to open up The Artist's compound in Paisley Park for the viewing public. For the remainder of the first hour we kept it funky with our Sampled weekly, and new tunes from Dustbowl Revival, Al Green, and Arjuna Oakes kept the fresh cuts coming through part 2. Dan Lloyd once again dropped in for our weekly AMPED rock sesh, highlighting some big tunes out this past week and albums that drop tomorrow, with Slipknot, LCD, Paramore, and Anxious being highlights. We also debuted our rock spotlight to finish the show, which honestly is not just two weeks too late, but several seasons, and we highlighted Baek Yerin's rock project The Volunteers to close things.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Prince – MusicologyDustbowl Revival – Set Me FreeLady Wray – Through It AllLucas/Heaven – Every City Has a RhythmVieux Farka Toure & Khruangbin – LobboArjuna Oakes & Serebii – Guava Part II (32:03)Durand Jones & The Indications – Giving UpKelly Finnigan – Catch Me I'm FallingAaron Frazer – You Don't Wanna Be My BabyBuddy Guy feat James Taylor – Follow The MoneyAl Green – Wanna SayFela Kuti & Afrika 70 – Alu Jon Jonki Jon Part III (70:21)Slipknot – AdderallYeah Yeah Yeahs – FleezBush – Heavy is the OceanParamore – This is WhyLCD Soundsystem – New Body Rhumba Part IV (1:44:35)Anxious – SunsignVUKOVI – QUENCHThe Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (Take 1)King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Iron LungThe Volunteers – Let Me Go!
A little throwback to November 6, 2020 as we had to reschedule with this week's guest artists Say She She, so we went back just under two years to debuting two tracks from An Ode To Escapism, Ghost Funk Orchestra's brilliant album that dropped the next week on Friday the 13th. Unsurprisingly, that would be 2020's SECOND Friday the 13th that calendar year. We talked with Ghost Funk founder Seth Applebaum on the production of the album and what's changed in his approach, along with playing some of his favorite inspirations to the ethereal sound.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Isaac Hayes – No Name BarGhost Funk Orchestra feat Kam Franklin – The King of MisdirectionL'éclair – DallasPolyrhythmics – Yeti, Set, GoDurand Jones & The Indicaitons – Young Americans Part II (30:03)Ghost Funk Orchestra – Slow DownMonophonics – It's Only UsBadge Epoque Ensemble feat US Girls – Sing A Silent GospelHoly Hive – Embers to AshSugar Candy Mountain – WindowsKit Sebastien – PangeaBudos Band – Long In The Tooth Part III (60:33)Ghost Funk Orchestra – Quiet Soul Kamilah – Dark SkinDorothy Ashby – GamesMia Pixley – TenderIGBO feat Nelson Bandela & Blvck Spade – OmersaarUnderground System – Rent Party Part IV (94:42)Ghost Funk Orchestra - ToujoursJ. After opening, we have killer new tunes just out this week from Say She She, Khruangbin, Chaka Khan, Robert Glasper, and Robohands just to highlight a few. A tribute to Blondie to start the gig and mark the history, with "Heart of Glass" going #1 on this date in 1979, but you know how we do, so we played a little demo/b-side version of that jawn to start but still tip our caps. After that plenty of new funk & soul in the first hour, with new cuts from Ghost Funk Orchestra, Jazzanova, and Daniel Caesar to taste test, amongst other delectable delights. As broadcast October 21, 2021 with plenty of super high for the podcast superflies. We mark today in 1972, when the definition of "cinematic soul" went to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, as Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" surely was, is, and shall be. We also rocked some early 70's from Willie Hutch, Isaac Hayes, and Syl Johnson for the rest of part 1. For part 2 we got to the new stuff just out, with Neal Francis, The Teskey Brothers, L'eclair, and Bobby Oroza all out with new joints. For our 2nd half, Dan Lloyd right as rain is back but this week with slim pickings in the rock world, we decided to look over some bands that have fallen off through the years, some of them without a decent track for over a decade...and we of course riffed on why that might be.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Curtis Mayfield – SuperflyWillie Hutch – Brothers Gonna Work It OutCharles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – Trouble In The LandSyl Johnson – Is It Because I'm BlackIsaac Hayes – Walk On By (ext vers) Part II (35:55)The Teskey Brothers feat Orchestra Victoria – So Caught Up (Live at Hamer Hall)Neal Francis – PrometheusMicah Edwards – Girl From The ValleyBobby Oroza feat Cold Diamond & Mink – So Caught UpEl Michels Affair – Messy GrassL'éclair – Cosmologies Pt. 1 Part III (65:48)Offspring – All I WantSmash Mouth – Diggin' Your SceneGreen Day – Armatage ShanksU2 – Where The Streets Have No NameSleater-Kinney – OhRamones – Cretin Hop Part IV (98:44)Foo Fighters – All My LifeMastodon – The Wolf Is LooseDandy Warhols – Every Day Should Be A HolidayBeck – Nicotine & GravyMumford & Sons – The Cave

So I've been mostly housebound for the last four months with plenty of free time. Luckily, while most of life has been on pause, the torrent of incredible music continues unchecked. I've been filling my head with jams of all eras, both new and new to me, and EPISODE #85 of Random Old Records is just a small sample of the musical riches that can be found with a little bit of digging.Loveland, Ohio's Colemine Records (and its subsidiary Karma Chief) continue to pump out hits, and this time around you'll hear the recent offerings of the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Monophonics, and Michael Nau. Righteous, romantic soul is the vibe most of the way, then it gets slow and easy for awhile before crashing into a more rockin' finish. Along the way you'll meet The Altons, La La Brooks, Heron, Mortimer, Penetration, the Brothers of Soul, and many more. It's an hour of deep cuts for deep heads, so close your eyes and dig in! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - “Inner City Blues,” a 2020 single on Colemine Records. Back in June, Colemine Records launched the Brighter Days Ahead singles series, a response to the stay-at-home orders and the subsequent loss of income from canceling tours, postponing release dates, and ceasing the manufacturing for LPs and 45s. "We wanted to come up with some way to give our fans and our artist's fans something to look forward to," explained label owner Terry Cole. Starting on May 22nd and running through the summer, Colemine will release a new track every Friday on their Bandcamp page with 100% of any revenues generated going directly to the artist. "Our goals are simple: put a little bit of money in our artist's pockets and get our fans some new tunes," Cole summarized. The series kicked off with Seattle's own Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio covering Marvin Gaye's 1971 track "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" off his landmark album What's Going On. The lyrics convey the despair of the bleak economic situation of the times, the lack of support from the government, and police brutality. (That sounds depressingly familiar.) But, in the hands of maestro Delvon Lamarr, the song sounds almost joyous as an instrumental. Guitarist Jimmy James adds a funky groove to the track, and drummer Dan Weiss picks up the pace from Gaye's original composition. Listening to it makes you believe, there might really be brighter days ahead. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

Happy 2020! I got married in 2019 which was pretty incredible, but otherwise the year was mighty rough in all sorts of ways for all sorts of people. Luckily, music continues to be amazing and it always seems to be there to lift everyone back up when they need it the most. EPISODE #79 of Random Old Records Podcast is here to start off the new year right with an hour of that sweet, sweet musical nectar!Loveland, Ohio-based Colemine Records was the hands-down label of the year, putting out a steady string of soulful and thoughtful LPs and 45s. So, it makes sense to feature a stack of jams from their catalog, including the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Thee Sinseers, and Black Pumas. Vivian Girls came back after a long absence with an incredible new album, and you will also hear the crucial "I'm Far Away" on this episode (plus more in the future, it's REALLY good). In between, there are a bunch of new and old jams from Opal, Possible Humans, Chromatics, Death and Vanilla, plus so much more. You might have also noticed that a bunch of older episodes have been added to the feed, and more are on the way, so stay tuned for more vintage shows and great new stuff in 2020!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Hey folks I'm back! EPISODE #76 of Random Old Records is a soundtrack for this strange and unsettling summer. It doesn't make a lot of sense but there's plenty of good stuff to keep you entertained and keep you thinking, at least I hope so!The show kicks off with a mix of modern soul from Durand Jones and the Indications and Kelly Finnigan, plus recently reissued heat from the Nat Turner Rebellion and a classic from the Dramatics. It flows into a lot of new stuff from all over the place, including tracks by Purple Mountains (RIP David Berman), Nicole Yun, Cate Le Bon, Juan Wauters, Pleasure Leftists, and a whole bunch more. Hey folks, welcome to the last Random Old Records podcast of 2018! EPISODE #71 jumps wildly from genre to genre, equally divided between music for dancing and dreaming.Colemine Records out of Loveland, Ohio has been modestly releasing the best vintage-sounding soul music all year long. The beginning of this episode highlights tracks by Ben Pirani and Wesley Bright and the Honeytones along with some rare '60s and '70s soul stompers. It moves on to more classic sounds from recent compilations, including garage rock from The Collectors and sunshine pop from The Carnival Connection, then back to the present day with jangle from The Weather Station and The Stroppies, bionic synth grooves from Vive La Void and Klaus Johann Grobe, plus a whole lot more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. I tried coming up with some kind of theme to EPISODE #65 of Random Old Records, but had the hardest time. 18 out of the 20 tracks included here feature a female vocalist, but it's not any kind of feminist statement. It jumps across genres. There's punk and reggae but not at the same time. There's great love songs, great rage songs, and a couple where I have no idea what they are about. It's music for singing and swaying and dancing. The early-going is dominated by British music from the late 80s, thanks to the incredible recent C87 and C88 box sets from Cherry Red that document those years in UK indie history. There's been so many great CD-only releases lately that I have started buying them regularly again. You'll also hear new tracks from second-generation reggae rocker Hollie Cook, NYC poppers The Shacks, and Canadian no-wave dynamos Ruby Karinto. Their self-titled debut LP on HoZac is an early frontrunner for album of the year!Loveland, Ohio's own Colemine Records is also highlighted, via a track from their February reissue of Gloria Barnes' rare deep-soul classic Uptown, and a recent moody soul cut from The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. The episode then finishes up with some new and old post-punk bashers from Aquarium, Grass Widow, Pill, the World, and so much more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS.
