Trevor Stamper—Trevor has had aspirations of being a Not-Quite-So-Dark Master for numerous years, tormenting players in home campaigns on at least two continents. At the age of 10, Trevor was launched into an AD&D game with his friends on Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. But once he moved to England, he lost touch with the game and explored other classics—Indiana Jones, Twilight 2000, Gangbusters, Traveller 2300—until Joel Phillips reintroduced him to D&D BECMI style when he was 15. From there it has been a life-long passion for gaming and creating things other players can enjoy. Trevor has published before in minor ways—a few articles in the now defunct ENWorld Journal, and some really minor contributions when Kobold Press was doing Open Design. He has also extensively playtested material for almost thirty years—starting with Werewolf first edition for White Wolf, to most recently a plethora of Fantasy Flight Games' offerings in the Warhammer 40K and Star Wars ranges. In this episode, Kip and Jason cover the Security Design Principle of “Least Common Mechanism”. The Lease Common Mechanism is the ninth security design principle and focuses on how you can best protect older, legacy systems in large organizations and within the government. Security Design Principle #9 is a crucial concept in the field of cybersecurity. It advocates for minimizing the amount of mechanisms shared by different users or processes, thereby reducing the chances of a security breach. This principle is rooted in the idea that shared resources or functionalities can become potential vulnerabilities, especially if they are used by multiple entities with varying levels of trustworthiness. The principle is based on the understanding that any shared mechanism or resource is a potential attack surface. When different programs or users rely on the same functionality or data paths, a breach in one can easily become a gateway to compromise the others. For instance, if a shared library has a vulnerability, every program using that library is at risk. Therefore, by reducing the number of shared components, the principle of Least Common Mechanism aims to limit the potential damage that can be caused by a security flaw or breach. Implementing this principle involves designing systems where the functionalities are as isolated as possible. This can be achieved through techniques like sandboxing, where programs run in isolated environments, or through the use of microservices architectures, where applications are broken down into smaller, independent services. Each service or program having its unique mechanisms greatly diminishes the risk of a widespread security incident. The principle also underlines the importance of not only securing shared resources but also constantly monitoring them. Regular audits and updates of shared components are vital to ensure they remain secure. In essence, the Least Common Mechanism principle is about understanding the risks associated with shared resources and proactively designing systems to minimize these risks. https://www.yourcyberpath.com/111/ In this episode, Kip and Jason delve into the specific security design principle of Open Design. Open Design does not equate to open-source software but refers to transparency in revealing the mechanisms and inner workings of security controls. The hosts discuss the misconceptions surrounding Open Design, emphasizing that it does not require disclosing source code but rather the transparency of security mechanisms. They also stress that Open Design encourages outsiders to review and provide feedback, ultimately enhancing the security of the system. Kip shares an example of an inadequate disclosure of a company's security architecture which prompted him to switch to another vendor, which offered more transparency. Jason mentions the concept of "security by obscurity," and explains that while obscurity can provide some level of protection, it is not sufficient, as attackers can easily bypass such measures with scanning tools. The hosts suggest that getting involved in Open Design initiatives can help individuals break into the cybersecurity field and gain recognition, urging interested parties to participate in open standards development processes, such as the creation of industry certifications, to establish credibility and build their careers. Guest Ana Jiménez Santamaría | Samson Goddy Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source for the long haul. Richard is at the State of Open Con 2023 UK in London, and he's excited to have his first ever in-person podcasts. Today, he has two guests joining him. His first guest is Ana Jiménez Santamaría, who's working as the TODO Group OSPO Program Manager at The Linux Foundation. We'll find out about Ana's talk at this event, everything she's been doing for the past few months as the OSPO Program Manager, what's going on with the regional working groups, what OSPOlogy is, and how the TODO Group works. His next guest is Samson Goddy, a software engineer, open source advocate, Co-founder of Open Source Community Africa (OSCA), and on the Open Source Collective Board. Samson gives us the details about OSCA and the OSCA Fest 2023 coming up in June, that he expects to have a lot of people attending. He also shares a great project called Chakra UI, created by a Nigerian maintainer, as well as a collection of open source projects on GitHub created by Nigerians. We'll hear about his talk, his favorite sessions, and how he views software sustainability. Enjoy these great discussions and hit the download button now! [00:00:54] Ana went to FOSDEM for the third time, and she tells us what her main takeaway was after being there, and the talk she enjoyed the most called, Open Design. [00:03:00] Since Ana is an OSPO Program Manager she does a lot in terms of output, so we'll find out what she's been doing for the past few months. [00:05:15] We hear about the regional working groups, for example the Japanese regional working group, and Ana tells us about some groups in Europe. [00:07:45] What is OSPOlogy? [00:09:03] Ana explains how the TODO Groups work and how OSPOlogy fits within a larger question of open source sustainability. [00:11:45] Richard wonders how they judge inauthentic participation in OSPO's, and do they ever have any actions what they can say this isn't what we want. [00:15:39] We hear about Ana's talk at State of Open Con UK, how the UK gets involved with TODO and the OSPO, and she shares that she sees a need of creating communities with British participants in the OSPO space. [00:17:54] What is Ana looking forward to in the next few months that she's working on? Also, with all the tech layoffs, she tells us if that has affected the participation in the OSPO. [00:20:50] Find out where you can get involved in the TODO Group and follow Ana on the web. [00:22:05] Richard's next guest joins him and that is Sampson Goddy. He gives us more details about being the co-founder of OSCA, what it is, and info about OSCA Fest 2023. [00:25:26] Richard doesn't see a lot of maintainers of major open source projects coming from Africa or Nigeria, and he wonders if we can change that. Sampson shares there's been a few projects done by Nigerian and African core maintainers, as well as a collection of open source projects created by Nigerians on GitHub. [00:29:06] A tough question is asked about there being a lot of racist and colonialist attitudes towards Nigeria and hard to deal with. Is there anything that corporations or communities of tech people can do to help OSCA and what would the support look like? [00:31:06] Sampson talks about other movements in countries that are not in Nigeria. [00:33:32] How does Sampson view software sustainability? [00:35:10] We hear what Sampson's favorite sessions have been in the sustain mini events with OSCA and what his talk is about. [00:36:27] Find out where you can learn more about OSCA and the festival coming up, and where you can follow him on the web. Guest Gleb Sabirzyanov Panelists Memo Esparza | Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. Today we have as our guest, Gleb Sabirzyanov, Designer and Digital Maker of all things. Gleb is currently doing all things related to Figma. He tells us about the plugins he built, Blend and Master, a project he started working on called Pink Turtles, and where he sees the future of Figma evolving in the next couple of years. Go ahead and download this episode now to find out much more, and if you're interested please subscribe! [00:01:14] Gleb tells us more about himself and how he started working in open source. He talks about two plugins he built called Blend and Master. [00:03:10] How did Gleb get involved into the world of design? [00:05:28] Gleb talks about how his relationship with Figma has been evolving. [00:08:01] We learn how Figma works as a platform for designers as well as how they enable you to build plugins. [00:09:55] Richard wonders what Gleb is using the tools for that he's building and how does he make sure that he's approaching the need of people who are using Figma to build their own websites if he's just building plugins. [00:11:45] Memo asks Gleb about the future of Figma and how he sees it evolving in the next couple of years. [00:14:51] Gleb talks about designers working on open source but using tools that are not open source, and Memo shares more about the Figma community with us. [00:19:35] Gleb shares his views on open design and a project he started working on called Pink Turtles. [00:24:27] Memo asks Gleb how we can bring all of the talented people into the design comfort zone and make them realize that they are creative and that they can produce designs by themselves. [00:27:59] Find out where you can follow Gleb on the internet. Quotes [00:11:51] “I think Figma is an interesting tool and an interesting company because it changed the design industry pretty heavily. It inspired designers to be more open in their process.” [00:12:57] “But, in the future I think it will be even more about collaboration and openness of the design process.” [00:14:22] “We usually have these conversations around when to use open source tools and how to balance your life with your stack of tools and say that you support open source, but we actually use tools that are not open source by definition.” [00:23:51] “But Gleb is right, there should be like a lot more other players out there thinking with the same rules or even, but you know, maybe a different set of rules of just how to create ways of designing more in the open.” [00:24:08] “I think that would be a really nice design prompt, to think about ideas of tools and projects that help designers and non-designers which is really important for designer teams all over, you know, how to include non-designers into the design process.” [00:27:44] “But also if somebody is interested in design, in like visual aspect of it, people can of course learn from the designers and from their decisions and maybe help contribute to the project as well.” [00:31:04] “I just love how Figma is seizing all of the situation to, like gather more people around the design team because this tool for me is to include more people of the team that are not designers, which I think is great.” Spotlight [00:28:53] Richard's spotlight is a post by Justin Jackson called, “This is a web page.” [00:29:37] Gleb's spotlight is VK Project on Figma community. [00:30:28] Memo's spotlight is a new Figma product called FigJam. “Open Education” is a fascinating discussion about what Open Education means with Aria Chernick. Aria is Associate Professor of the Practice at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and the Social Science Research Institute at Duke University. She is also co-founder and co-director of the Open Design Studio. Aria is one of the major proponents of applying open-source principles to the development of education in order to provide more equal access to high-quality education for all.
Dr. Aria Chernik, Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University joined the podcast to talk about Open Design and why Design Thinking at large is such a critical 21st century skill to teach our students.
Jenny Wen is a Product Designer at Figma who focuses on improving the collaborative experience of designers and their counterparts throughout the design process. Designers are generally pretty familiar with the idea of “designing openly” and sharing a design work with teammates. Open design today is often an illusion of “open design,” meaning there are still ways and means to hide behind a screen. In this episode, Jenny explores the ways in which Figma embraces open design, to redefine the future of the design industry. This is the first of a new series called "The Tome Show Presents". In this TSP I will be featuring a short series of shows around one theme or product. In this first appearance I am presenting Blood of the Gorgon, the 5th Open Design project that I talked about during my interview with Nicolas Logue. After talking to Nicolas and Wolfgang Baur before I still had a hard time getting my head wrapped around what the experience of being a Patron of the Open Design projects was like. So I twisted a few arms and now I get to bring you the experience as well as provide current Patrons a bit of an insight as to what is going on with the project and another channel of communication between them and the author. This is part 1 of 4 of the Tome Show Presents: Blood of the Gorgon and I hope you enjoy. You can, email me at thetomeshow@gmail.com or visit the website at www.thetomeshow.com.

In this episode I had a fun chat with Nicolas Logue. Most of what we talked about revolved around the new Open Design project, that is being announced in conjunction with the release of this episode over at wolfgangbaur.com and koboldquarterly.com, Blood of the Gorgon. We also chat briefly about Nicolas' work at Paizo, as well as Wizards of the Coast, Kobold Quarterly, NerdNYC, and the Iron DM. I also play a promo for Gamer's Haven. I would also appreciate it if you check out the Tome's Amazon store. The show gets a part of the profits and that helps pay the bills for the show. Don't hesitate to check out Fist Full of Comics and Games, our partner podcast, for great geek discussions. Find more great gaming podcasts and Goblin and RPGPodcasts. And please email the show at thetomeshow AT gmail DOT com.
