Design schools tend to focus on the creative process in interior design, but fall short when it comes to teaching the business side of the industry. In this episode of Inside Design, our incredibly talented friend and colleague, Kate Lester, shares valuable insights to help you run a more successful design business. Listen to today's episode here: https://spoti.fi/3I46Lve?? Watch today's episode on YouTube: https://bit.ly/InsideDesignYouTube Key Takeaways: 1. Get at least 5 years of real world experience before you even THINK of going out on your own. Make mistakes on someone else's dime first.  2. If your scope of work is very fluid and your efficiency is at the mercy of others (i.e. contractors), billing hourly vs flat fee is the smarter way to go.  3. Above all, stay in your lane and remain true to yourself no matter what your creative peers are doing!  SPONSOR: Norwalk Furniture Norwalk builds heirloom quality furniture rather than landfill quality furniture. Their dedication to the power of interior design also extends to their charity work throughout the U.S. and Guatemala. KATE LESTER BIO Kate Lester is the creative director and CEO of Kate Lester Interiors & Kate Lester HOME. With a diversely talented design team in her studio, and two retail stores in Southern California, Kate is thrilled to be spreading her unique design vision with the masses. Her style ethos is all about creating spaces that weave classic lines, vintage finds, modern moments, and an infusion of at least “one weird thing.” Kate attended USC's prestigious Marshall School of Business and went on to study Design and Architecture at Otis College in Los Angeles. Her industry experience includes working for some of Hollywood's most famous designers before launching her own firm in 2010. Thriving at the intersection of livable luxury, humor, and realism, Kate believes that the homes she designs should always be carefully crafted, thoughtfully curated, and a direct reflection of the people who inhabit them. When not designing, Kate can be found in Southern California dragging her family to flea markets, running on the beach, or hesitantly participating in a plethora of extreme sports with her extremely persuasive (and brave) husband and daughter. Did you know for every £1 you spend on even simple Biophilic Design enhancements, you could get £2.70 back? So reveals the new research conducted by Joyce Chan Shoof Architect and Sustainability Lead at the UK Parliament. Using a scientific approach with control environments, adding biophilic design elements to test the effect and then removing them to further test the effect of their absence, Joyce explains the rigorous approach she took over a seven-year period to arrive at her conclusion. This is a phenomenal breakthrough for those of us working in Biophilic Design. You can read the whole report here: https://plplabs.com/reap-what-you-sow-2/And come and see Joyce present the research in person at Workplace Trends in London on the 18th April 2024 https://workplacetrends.co/events/wtrs24-prog/We often have struggled trying to articulate the economic benefits of Biophilic Design, this research can be used to support arguments why businesses need it in the workplace. Joyce has also developed a framework to help designers work out what we need and the impact it will have. Using existing frameworks, like the Flourish model (as advocated by Professor Derek Clements Croome) and others, she has woven a great new model we can all hang our designs on.From a career as a practicing architect, Joyce explains that transferring to the client side within the Parliamentary Estate has been transformational in the way she sees building design from feasibility study through to construction. The change and the opportunity it gave her has inspired her to incorporate multidisciplinary approaches and to study the impact of taking a biophilic design on efficiency, productivity and well-being within the workplace.Just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, one interesting outcome that she highlights during the podcast, the study concludes that an immersive approach to incorporating Biophilic Design in the workplace is less effective overall than a more measured approach. But she explains that the immersive effect was preferred by people. The results showed that the moderate Biophilic Design intervention (that which we could normally advocate) seems to be the best.Joyce sees academic rigour as an important part of her role when leading a complex development. Since 2017, she has been conducting this doctoral research with the Design School at Loughborough University, focused on Sustainable Well-being in the workplace with a particular interest in biophilic and social value. She is a keen advocate of how Architects can make positive impacts towards allowing people to live happier and healthier. Her team sits within the Design Authority who are a group of design professionals and specialists who are managing the estate in Westminster, and their objective is to inject new thinking into the adaptive use of new and heritage buildings within the Parliamentary Estate – a UNESCO site. Parliament's vision is amibitious; it aims to set an example to lead the early adoption of Zero Carbon (Scope 1, 2 & 3), Healthy Buildings, Social Value and Circular Economy through our own refurbishment projects and procurement. The team manages the design, construction and operations of the Parliamentary Estate of 20 buildings including the Palace of Westminster. Joyce discusses her study of the economic benefits of incorporating a biophilic design approach to workspace and gives many insights into her approach and into how she found a way of attributing economic value to the benefits. Her wish is that we reconnect with nature, the sources of food, the feeling of being part of nature rather than living lives that separate us from the natural world. She wishes that all of us benefit from an improved environment, and her research is a massive and welcome step in that direction. To register for Workplace Trends and meet Joyce in person on the 18th of April 2024: https://workplacetrends.co/events/wtrs24-prog/Reap What You Sow: What's the value (£) of Biophilic Design? (14.40)– Joyce Chan-Schoof (RIBA), PhD Research Researcher, Loughborough University and Sustainability Lead, UK ParliamentGiven employees are the largest cost for a business, to what extent can biophilic design save companies money by ensuring that staff are healthier and happier at work? We explore these questions by delving into the monetary benefits of biophilic design. This presentation presents new ways to capture the tangible well-being and environmental values of connecting with nature in the workplace. This project is part of a doctoral research project at Loughborough University in collaboration with PLP Architects, Benholm and Reading University. Joyce's research is funded by the Design Star (AHRC), and the BCO sponsored the pilot study.Read more and follow up on the research:https://plplabs.com/wearables-in-the-workplace/https://www.bco.org.uk/Research/Publications/Use_of_Wearables_In_The_Office_-_A_review_and_examples_in_practice.aspxHave you got a copy of the Journal? Drawing from personal experiences, Rocky Roark, a Graphic Design BFA graduate, recounts how a staggering attrition rate and a lack of essential skills left only a handful of classmates equipped for the design industry. The episode sheds light on critical areas where design education often falls short, including outdated curriculum, a dearth of practical training, insufficient industry exposure, and financial barriers. It emphasizes the need for a shift towards more inclusive, adaptable, and industry-relevant education, recognizing that while not all design schools share these deficiencies, it's crucial to address those that do. How to think about small spaces and know when you need to edit. Managing accessories and little trinkets and treasures. A few Lathem and Cate's favorite ways to bring lighting into a small space. Is there an end-point to maximalism? Why are islands so big, and how can we keep them from being such a cluttered mess? Mentioned in This Episode: Design School with Gordon Dunning: Episode 6 Gordon Dunning @gordondunning Decorating Dilemma:  Thank you Rebecca and we are happy to have you as a loyal fan! First, we suggest using decorative panels instead of functional drapery, which would keep the window treatments within the framing (about six inches on either side) to highlight the high ceilings and create a softening effect. There's also the possibility of wallpapering the living room and kitchen. Framing wallpaper panels around the archway can also add a decorative touch. As far as the dining set, maybe think about a racetrack-shaped table, either classic or modern in style and a marble or marble-like material for the tabletop. Colorful chairs would also look great. Your choice of table may influence the selection of a new light fixture, like a more organic or circular shape to complement the dining table.

How about these goals: Avoid human extinction Cultivate healthy economies of living systems at local landscape, continental and planetary scales Emerge into these systems on the other side of whatever crises and collapse(s) are aheadWhat would that take?Joe Brewer has dedicated his life to this question, and to a "living laboratory" of bioregional regeneration and community collaboration. He is the founder of Earth Regenerators and co-founder of the newly established Design School for Regenerating Earth.I have learned so much from Joe. He's been a source of information, inspiration, techniques and strategies, and also the reason I've found many other people I'm now so grateful to be connected with (including Charles Upton, whom you heard from in Episode 21). Joe gave me a big grin and two thumbs up when I said that I frame these conversations in the language of Joanna Macy, so we have that in common. His roots of study spread wide in many other directions, though: He's a complexity researcher and transdisciplinary scholar who has studied cultural evolution, physics, atmospheric sciences, and cognitive linguistics, among other things. Joe is also a father, and someone who is trying to embody the pathway to Earth Regeneration. I know through community photos and stories that he's out there digging swales and planting trees, and participating actively in all the realities of community cooperation.I've been looking forward to having a conversation with Joe Brewer for a long time, and I'm excited to share it with you now.Click Play now to dive into:working for regeneration on the scale of larger landscapes, even if we live in cities (how did water move through this bioregion before these cities existed?) in thinking about sustainability, how much depends on the regenerative capacity of the land having children, being with children, and being there for children, in these times (I loved this: "children are such a profound source of human emotional regeneration") the tapestry of local projects being woven together in the High Andes Tropical Dry Forest ecosystem of Barichara, Colombia - a living laboratory for a bioregional-scale regenerative economy  the human species being in ecological overshoot, what that probably means about the future, and what Joe is "actively hopeful" for, in light of that how to have effective, cooperative groups - both the knowledge about how to do that, and the actual practice of doing it and Joe's words of advice on following your heart, and being ready for people to be confusedI continue to learn so much from Joe and the Earth Regenerators community. Maybe for some of you listening this will also be a doorway into what's next for you, in your journey toward embodying life-sustaining, life-honoring, regenerative ways to live in the web of Life.Come to the show notes for links to connect with Joe Brewer, check out the Design School for Regenerating Earth, and learn about other topics we touched on: turningseason.com/episode33

Today's ID the Future takes a look at how scientists from MIT and Johns Hopkins University are picking up clever engineering tricks by studying the feather design of the Namaqua sandgrouse. Ordinary bird feathers are already a master class in ingenious design, but as Jochen Mueller and Lorna Gibson show in a recent Royal Society Interface paper, the males of this desert-dwelling sandgrouse from southwestern Africa “have specially adapted feathers on their bellies that hold water, even during flight, allowing the birds to transport water back to the chicks at the nest.” Episode guest Brian Miller details the ingenious design of these feathers and tells how they are inspiring human inventions, one of which could help desert communities collect water Read More › Source

We welcome the wonderful and multi-talented Justin Q. Williams to our show to chat about his episode of 'Design School' on QVC+. Justin is not only an interior designer, but also an artist, furniture designer, and TV star who you might remember from Design Star: Next Gen on HGTV. The Atlanta-based designer talks to us about his journey from creating 3D plans as a 12-year old to now mentoring others. He emphasizes the importance of interior designers learning photo styling and business, and being able to pivot quickly. Justin also discusses designing restaurants vs. residential homes and why his special episode of Design School will be perfect for those living in a townhouse or row house. Additionally, Justin reveals more about his furniture line and art collections, which he named after family members to honor his amazing support system. What You'll Hear On This Episode: Special shout out to Justin's dad who bought him architecture and design programs at 12 years old, that he jumped into and fell in love with the process. How mentorship and working in many facets of design helped Justin develop the skills he has today. How the experience of making the season finale episode of Design School differed from his show on HGTV, Design Star. How Design Star changed his life (many months of 12 hour days) and business once the show was out. The importance of learning how to pivot and be able to change plans quickly as a designer. More behind his furniture business and why he named certain pieces after his family members to honor his support system. The importance of building great relationships with people, because you never know what they can turn into. The difference between designing a restaurant vs. a residential home. A sneak peek into some of Justin's highlights of his Design School episode! Mentioned in This Episode: Justin Q. Williams Trademark Design Co. Design Star Design School Decorating Dilemma: Thanks Gloria! First off, your room looks so good, and we love your wall color. And, you nailed the bed. For what you can change, Justin thinks you should focus on the sides of the bed. Whether it's adding mirrors or some sweet art, that will make the size seem bigger. Then, over the bed, adding something round and textural will compliment the art and mirrors on both sides of the bed and balance the wall. Justin would switch the lamps on the tables and for accessories..remember: fashion is second and function is first. There is no such thing as too big of a lamp, unless it can't fit! Layering is a good thing and also makes the room feel full and curated. Thanks so much and we can't wait to see the updates!

Kristin shares with us why she loves dark colors, how we can maximize seating in our space, and how universal design is not boring! What You'll Hear On This Episode: Kristin and her husband bought his childhood home from his parents, and she talks about the renovations and changes they made. The challenges of renovating a split-level house. Universal design is not boring! And if you think it is, watch Kristin's episode of Design School. There's nothing more precious in your home than the people. How to maximize seating in your space. Kristin's love of dark colors Creating a palate cleanser in the hallways. More about Kristin's beautiful dining room, including the walls. What was her experience like during Design School? The importance of understanding scale. Mentioned in This Episode: Ballard Designs Room Planner https://kkongdesigns.com/ Design School Decorating Dilemma: Hi, and thank you for writing in! First, it might be beneficial to move the armor to another room, if that is an option. We also wonder if you can sort of flip that leather chair, maybe to the other side of the television, and next to the stove. Adding a cool console table behind the loveseat would be great, along with tucking in a few ottomans. And, if you could get a slipcover made for that Ottoman so that you could kind of keep it functionally, but you could just kind of pop some sort of fabric and a cool pattern or texture on top to again, it would help to break up all the matching brown leather. Be sure to try out Ballard's Room Planning tool for scale!

What does zero carbon look like if you are planning a new housing development in your town. The UK's building stock is one of the oldest in Europe, accounting for nearly 40% of the nation's total carbon emissions, so how possible is it for our cities to cut them to zero before 2050? Lecturer Lara Salinas explains how she has worked with local residents in the borough of Southwark in South London, encouraging them to take up zero carbon building design and retrofit. Professor Ljubomir Jankovic describes working with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, supporting their thinking about how housing developments could be built in future and how to build in net zero principles as part of the design process. New Generation Thinker Des Fitzgerald hosts the conversation. Ljubomir Jankovic is Professor of Advanced Building at the University of Hertfordshire and leads the Zero Carbon Lab. Lara Salinas is Lecturer in the Design School at London College of Communication and Senior Research Fellow in Knowledge Exchange at University of the Arts London.
