Citizen Science and Open Education. To most people, especially those who are too young to remember the Cold War, the possibility of nuclear Armageddon may seem so remote as not to be worth contemplating. But Prof. Bob Redwine and Jim Walsh, two of the instructors behind MIT's Nuclear Weapons Education Project (NWEP), warn that it may not be so unlikely after all, and that failure to take the threat of nuclear war seriously makes it more likely that it will actually occur. Redwine, Walsh, and their colleagues used their expertise from a wide array of fields to create the NWEP and its associated course 8.S271 Nuclear Weapons – History and Prospects. Together, the course and the project website represent an interdisciplinary effort to educate nonspecialists on the science, technology, and history of nuclear weapons, along with present efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation and to reach international agreements to reduce the likelihood of a world-devastating conflict. In this episode, we hear how the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki changed geopolitics forever, how a well-intentioned nuclear doctrine may have disastrous unintended consequences, and why understanding the topic of nuclear weapons requires an interdisciplinary approach. For Céline Semaan, the founder of Slow Factory, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing climate justice and social equity, no obstacle is too big—or too conceptual—to surmount. Underlying all of Slow Factory's efforts is the notion of “fashion activism,” a term that's been credited to Semaan herself. The organization's past projects include “Landfills as Museums,” which served as a meditation on what “trash” really is, and among its upcoming efforts is “Garment-to-Garment,” an initiative that will teach designers to make clothes from existing apparel instead of from rolls of raw fabric. Semaan is also currently developing the new Slow Factory Institute in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which will serve the dual roles of a factory for waste-led production as well as a Bauhaus-style school for climate justice. On this episode, Semaan speaks with Spencer about fashion as a political act, the importance of finding ease with contradiction, and what a post-trash world could look like.Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Full transcriptcelinecelines.comslowfactory.earth[03:54] “Slow is Beautiful”[06:16] Open Education[10:58] “Cities at Night”[30:16] “Applied Utopia”[34:05] Slow Factory Institute[35:01] Colin Vernon[36:33] Slowhide[41:13] “Landfills as Museums”[51:25] “Garment-to-Garment”[01:08:41] A Woman Is a School[01:24:45] “The Revolution is a School”

Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12—the first three verses there—Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. It meant something different. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆https://linktr.ee/jacksonlibon---------------------------------------------------#face #instagram #amour #take #couple #garden #tiktok #psychology #beyou #near #love #foryou #money #ForYouPizza #fyp #irobot #theend #pups #TikToker #couplegoals #famille #relation #doudou #youtube #twitter #tiktokers #love #reeĺs #shorts #instagood #follow #like #ouy #oyu #babyshark #lilnasx #girl #happybirthday #movie #nbayoungboy #deviance #autotrader #trading #khan #academy #carter #carguru #ancestry #accords #abc #news #bts #cbs #huru #bluebook #socialmedia #whatsapp #music #google #photography #memes #marketing #india #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #a #insta #fashion #k #trending #digitalmarketing #covid #o #snapchat #socialmediamarketing

I'd like to compare the ways World History survey courses cover history in different regions of the world, and also if possible how this changes over time. I've asked Open Education folks, Moodlers, and others -- now I'm asking my viewers for suggestions of the textbook titles they've used or are aware of in their regions. Thanks!!
We are joined by Kat Klement who presented at the OpenEd21 conference on their course Queer Psychology, which they built using free and openly licensed materials (including OER). Open Access, Open Education and Cootie Catchers. That should be all you need to know to convince you to listen to what Abbey Elder, Open Access & Scholarly Communication Librarian for Iowa State University, has to say.
Peter Bergson is the co-founder of two self-directed learning centers in the Philadelphia area: Open Connections (openconnections.org) and Natural Creativity Center (naturalcreativity.org). We discuss Peter's journey from creativity consultant to early childhood educator, his collaboration with John Holt, fighting for better homeschooling laws in the 80s, growing a tiny self-directed learning center in a bigger and better-funded one, the importance of “sense of belonging” for young people, and his attempt to bring his ideas to inner-city Philadelphia. Peter stars in the 2020 documentary “Unschooled” (unschooledthemovement.com), which I highly recommend. The new center that his children have started is Cupola Academy (cupolaacademy.org).
Terry Greene shares about creating and extending open education on episode 364 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast.
The classic New England town meeting, with voters gathered in a large hall to decide issues directly, is often cited as the purest form of American democracy. But historically, those town meetings gave a voice only to certain classes of people. In this episode we meet Ceasar McDowell, Professor of the Practice of Community Development at MIT and newly appointed associate director of MIT’s Center for Constructive Communication. Prof. McDowell has devoted his career to nurturing a more vibrant, inclusive democracy, one adapted to the complex reality of a modern, largely urbanized America. In his course 11.312 Engaging Community (coming soon to OpenCourseWare), he helps his students use the tools of civic design to craft forms of community engagement and decision-making that will bring everyone into the conversation, even those on the margins of our society. In keeping with his commitment to collaborative effort, Prof. McDowell encourages his students to propose specific real-life problems they’re interested in, and to decide collectively which ones to address in the class. “We have to learn to talk to each other,” he says. “Yes, this is hard work, and yes, you can do it.” Relevant Resources:MIT OpenCourseWareThe OCW Educator PortalProfessor McDowell’s faculty pageMIT's Center for Constructive CommunicationWe Who Engage (blog)We Who Engage (podcast episodes)We Who Engage (Instagram)America’s Path ForwardCivic Design FrameworkMusic in this episode by Blue Dot SessionsConnect with Us:If you have a suggestion for a new episode or have used OCW to change your life or those of others, tell us your story. How do you replicate history? No, this is not a rhetorical question but an actual ongoing open science project by historians from Utrecht University. Together with a group of students Pim Huijnen and Pieter Huistra are shaping an entirely novel approach to historical research. Popes and their inquisitors, emperors and their hangmen, commissars and their secret police–throughout history, all have sought to stanch the free flow of information. Efforts have ranged from being burned for attempting to translate the Bible, to dictionaries and encyclopedias being forbidden, to works of literature and science and history being trashed and pulped, and beyond. With this long tradition that still persists to this day, how do we create a universe of truthful and verifiable information, available to everyone? This is a question that teacher and film producer Peter Kaufman has been grappling with. In his book The New Enlightenment and the Fight to Free Knowledge, he examined the history of attempts to stifle information, including what we see in present day. Although they can feel less outwardly insidious, Kaufman looked at what he considers the enemies of free thought in the 21st century, who have taken on new and different guises: giant corporate behemoths, sprawling national security agencies, gutted regulatory commissions. They work to surveil and control, and Kaufman argued they are no less nefarious than their predecessors. But far from leaving us in the gloomy realities, Kaufman invited us to consider the opportunities to mobilize, drafting a new social contract for our networked video age. Drawing upon the tactics of those fighting against earlier incarnations of knowledge restrictors, he presented a progressive agenda for how today’s free thinkers can band together now to fight and win. He asked us to consider: what does it mean to be a citizen in the 21st century? A writer, teacher, and documentary film producer, Peter Kaufman works at MIT Open Learning and MIT’s Knowledge Futures Group. He previously served as Associate Director of Columbia University’s Center for Teaching and Learning. He has served as president and executive producer of Intelligent Television, founder of the Audio-Visual Think Thank at Sound & Vision in the Netherlands, and in a number of other prestigious roles with organizations that center on media and broadcasting. He is the author of numerous articles on media and education. Dr. Cable Green is the Director of Open Education at Creative Commons, where he works with the global open education community to leverage open licensing, content, practices, and policies to significantly improve access to effective open education and research resources. He’s a leading advocate for open licensing and procurement policies that ensure publicly funded education materials are freely and openly available to the public that paid for them. This week, Brenna is reflecting on reflection and on the power of kindness, and is joined by someone who lives and breathes "open" even more than she does.
This week, Brenna is back from a surprise hiatus with an episode from her personal beforetimes. She talks about Open Ed Week and is joined by the Open Learning dream team to talk about a new OER for the campus community (and beyond).
Gettin' Air with Delmar Larsen. In honor of Open Education Week 2021, we chat with one of Open Education's biggest contributors. Delmar is the Director (and originator) of the open textbook platform LibreTexts. In this conversation, Delmar describes how LibreText's origins can be traced back to catastrophic childhood events. We follow it all the way through to its current state, which is an extremely rich and diverse ecosystem of open learning experiences. So far they've provided learners with oh just a few millennia worth of free learning time. We finish off by chatting about a few current issues in Open Education and how we might best move forward.
We were joined in the studio today by Brandy Boies, Marketing Director for Lord Fairfax Community College and her guest, Karen Kellison, Dean of Business, Education & Technology to talk about LFCC's Open Education Resource Initiative. Lord Fairfax Community College is a proud member of the Achieving the Dream OER Degree Grant with the Virginia Community College Consortium. The mission of the grant strives to reduce the costs of textbooks to students. LFCC currently offer DOZENS of CLASSES using OER with textbook costs to students of $40 or less! When registering for summer and fall courses look for “Materials cost less than $40” in the notes section. Brandy also gave us the details for the Wits for Wellness 5k Run/Walk happening on Saturday, April, 22 beginning at 9am. For all the details including registration information, visit their website: https://lfcc.edu/5k
Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast How do we make sustainability, permaculture resources, and education more accessible? Are free and open source tools a way to answer that question? To start that conversation, Botho Willer, the creator of Plant Buddies, joins me to talk this open source tool which makes finding compatible companion plants easier. During our time together Botho also shares his work with Serlo.org, an open education platform and project modeled after Wikipedia and designed to provide high quality education worldwide, free of charge, and without ads. As mentioned in this conversation, open source tools matter to me. I've used these resources for years. My first encounter with Linux was in 1995 as the senior student systems administrator for my high school. In the early days of the podcast the show was recorded and edited entirely on a Linux laptop, and to this day the podcast website is hosted on a Debian Linux server. Even after 6+ years, I continue to edit the show with Audacity, a Free and Open Source editor. As a result of all of that, I would like to see more independent education like you find on the podcast, or on YouTube through the videos of Geoff Lawton or Blake Kirby . With so much information available, however, sometimes it can be difficult to find high quality resources, which is why sites like Serlo are important for curating this information in open, crowd sourced, democratic ways. Together, with our skills and talents, we can contribute the a regenerative future. If you know of other projects or programs like Serlo, let me know.
