Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque is the fifth largest base in the United States Air Force, and one of the 'crown jewels' of national security. This week, two guests from KAFB join Chris and Gabby to explain some of the critical missions happening on base, the economic impact the 52,000-acre base has in New Mexico, and the upcoming chance the public will have to get up close and personal to the aircraft. Kirtland AFB will host its first air show in six years in May. What should people expect to see? And what makes Albuquerque such a unique training environment for pilots?  We appreciate our listeners. Send your feedback or story ideas to hosts chris.mckee@krqe.com or gabrielle.burkhart@krqe.com. Doty played a key role in a psychological operation against Paul Bennewitz, a businessman and UFO researcher. In the 1980s, Bennewitz believed he had uncovered evidence of extraterrestrial activity near Kirtland Air Force Base. Instead of correcting him, Doty and others, acting under orders from multiple U.S. agencies, including the NSA, CIA, and DIA, fed him disinformation, leading to Bennewitz's mental and emotional unraveling. In our interview, Richard Doty reflects on his past involvement with Paul Bennewitz. Trevor Stamper—Trevor has had aspirations of being a Not-Quite-So-Dark Master for numerous years, tormenting players in home campaigns on at least two continents. At the age of 10, Trevor was launched into an AD&D game with his friends on Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. But once he moved to England, he lost touch with the game and explored other classics—Indiana Jones, Twilight 2000, Gangbusters, Traveller 2300—until Joel Phillips reintroduced him to D&D BECMI style when he was 15. From there it has been a life-long passion for gaming and creating things other players can enjoy. Trevor has published before in minor ways—a few articles in the now defunct ENWorld Journal, and some really minor contributions when Kobold Press was doing Open Design. He has also extensively playtested material for almost thirty years—starting with Werewolf first edition for White Wolf, to most recently a plethora of Fantasy Flight Games' offerings in the Warhammer 40K and Star Wars ranges. After over 389 Kickstarters as a backer, this is his eleventh one as a creator! As the Israel-Hamas conflict rages on, college campuses across the United States have become hotbeds of protest, with students demanding their universities divest from companies supporting Israel's military actions in Gaza. The Associated Press reports that arrests related to these demonstrations have now surpassed 2,000, spanning at least 35 schools since the protests began in mid-April at Columbia University. While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures. Police have cleared encampments at universities like UCLA and Portland State, often leading to clashes and numerous arrests. Notably, a police officer at Columbia University allegedly fired his gun while clearing protesters from an administration building, though no injuries were reported. The protests have also spread beyond U.S. borders, with demonstrations popping up in France, South Africa, and Mexico. Republican leaders in California have criticized university administrations for allowing the protests to escalate, calling for the firing of leaders at schools like UCLA and Cal Poly Humboldt. Meanwhile, President Biden has defended the right to peacefully protest but condemned violence, vandalism, and hate speech, emphasizing that "order must prevail." As tensions continue to mount, universities find themselves grappling with the challenge of balancing free speech and campus safety. Some argue that the crackdowns demonstrate an unwillingness to engage with students and their demands, while others maintain that civil disobedience comes with an expectation of consequences. The arrests have not been limited to students alone, with professors from Dartmouth and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville among those taken into custody. In some cases, the protests have moved beyond campus boundaries, as seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where demonstrators blocked access to a main gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. University leaders are facing pressure from various angles, with Florida's state university chancellor ordering campus presidents to prevent disruption of graduation ceremonies by protesters. The Pulitzer Prize Board has commended student journalists for their coverage of the protests, recognizing the risks they face in documenting these events. As the academic year draws to a close, it remains to be seen how this wave of activism will shape the future of campus politics and the ongoing debate over the U.S. role in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The coming weeks and months will likely see continued discussions and potential policy changes as universities navigate the complexities of this highly charged issue. Institution (In-sti-tu-tion): While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures.Protester (Pro-test-er): While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures.Vandalism (Van-dal-ism): Meanwhile, President Biden has defended the right to peacefully protest but condemned violence, vandalism, and hate speech, emphasizing that "order must prevail."Unwillingness (Un-wil-ling-ness): Some argue that the crackdowns demonstrate an unwillingness to engage with students and their demands, while others maintain that civil disobedience comes with an expectation of consequences.Demonstrator (Dem-on-stra-tor): In some cases, the protests have moved beyond campus boundaries, as seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where demonstrators blocked access to a main gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Austin Gadient, CTO & Co-Founder of Vali Cyber, a Linux security platform that has raised $15 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Origins in Cybersecurity: Austin's journey into cybersecurity began at the US Air Force Academy, leading to a master's in computer science at MIT focused on offensive cybersecurity tactics, specifically against Linux systems. Transition to Defense: Post-MIT, Austin's work shifted towards defense, working on satellite systems at Kirtland Air Force Base, where the limitations of existing Linux security solutions inspired the founding of Vali Cyber. Initial Product Development: The early days of Vali Cyber were dedicated to developing a prototype capable of behaviorally stopping ransomware attacks on Linux systems and introducing a rollback feature for system restoration. Challenges of Early Commercialization: Austin discusses the initial rush to market and the realization that competing against established vendors required a nearly flawless product, underscoring the importance of mature QA processes. Building Trust with Customers: Given the high stakes of Linux security, building trust was crucial. Austin leveraged his and his CEO's backgrounds in defense and created tools like securityperf to validate their product's claims transparently. Identifying the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP): Initially focusing on DoD organizations, Vali Cyber expanded its target to enterprises with significant Linux infrastructure, recognizing the importance of protecting mission-critical systems in sectors like finance.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History was established in 1969 as an intriguing place to learn the story of the Atomic Age, from early research of nuclear development through today's peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Visitors can explore how nuclear science continues to influence our world. The museum strives to present, through permanent and changing exhibits and displays, the diverse applications of nuclear science in the past, present and future along with the stories of the field's pioneers. The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is accredited through the American Alliance of Museums. BRIEF HISTORY The creation of the Museum in 1969 was the result of a six-year effort to establish a museum to tell the story of the base and the development of nuclear weapons. The Museum was located on Kirtland Air Force Base. In 1973, the museum name was changed to National Atomic Museum to reflect the growing national and international audience and the fact that it was the only public museum that preserved the history of the nuclear industry. The Museum closed its doors at the Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico on September 11, 2001, due to heightened security measures at the Base. The National Atomic Museum was in its rented Old Town location from May 11, 2002 to February 7, 2009; the Museum re-opened in its current location in southeast Albuquerque in April 2009, when it was renamed The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. MISSION The Museum's mission is “to serve as America's resource for nuclear history and science. The Museum presents exhibits and quality educational programs that convey the diversity of individuals and events that shape the historical and technical context of the nuclear age.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loren-alberts/message

On this edition of Parallax Views, fake news and the rise of conspiracy theories like QAnon have become political hot-takes since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump and events like the January 6th, 2021 "Stop the Steal" riots on Capitol Hill. But disinformation and conspiracy theories that stretch far beyond the limits of credulity didn't begin in the 21st century. Case in point with the strange case of UFO hobbyist Paul Bennewitz. and what has become know to UFO enthusiasts as "The Bennewitz Affair". It's a story that doesn't necessarily point towards beings from another world, but rather the mix of deliberate disinformation on one hand and flat-out kookery on the other hand that may play a role in phenomena of Pizzagate and QAnon. Adam Gorightly, author Saucers, Spooks, and Kooks: UFO Disinformation in the Age of Aquarius, and David Perkins, who wrote the forward to said book, join us on this edition of the program join us to unravel how disinformation campaign involving a special agent of United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) and others participated in a disinformation campaign against Bennewitz after the enthusiastic UFO hobbyist began attracting unwanted attention to Kirtland Air Force Base. The saga of Paul Bennewitz, as you'll learn in this conversation, ended in tragedy. More precisely, Bennewitz was driven off a psychological cliff into madness that culminated in instiutionalization. But the story doesn't end there. As it turns out the fanciful stories fed to Bennewitz about malevolent extraterrestrial, government deals with an alien presence and it's cover-up, an underground base at Dulce, New Mexico, and more formed the foundation of modern UFO mythology, from cattle mutilations to Area 51, in its most conspiratorially-minded form (which, incidentally, often overlap a great deal with far-right wing "Patriot" and militia movements). Regardless of whether one believes in UFOs or not, what makes the Bennewitz Affair and the late 20th UFO Conspiracy subculture potentially interesting today is what it may be able to tell us about disinformation and the current crop of conspiracy theories like QAnon in the 21st century. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views!

ALBUQUERQUE, NM: THE GREAT AMERICA OF 2000-2020 Albuquerque, New Mexico, may be unique among the cities discussed in this project because its best times as a community could arguably be our present era. Nearby federal facilities like Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Labs have made the area a magnet for investment in the tech and alternative-energy sector, making for a vibrant and growing economy. New Mexico's aggressive pursuit of the entertainment industry in the 2000s have made Albuquerque a center for film production, giving the southwestern hinterlands an outsized place in American popular culture. A diverse and forward-looking local political leadership promotes sustainable development, having invested in transit and promoting local arts and culture. It has all contributed to a new sense of civic pride in a community which, unfairly, had been the butt of jokes for decades. While the city's prosperity seems inclusive across its diverse population, the current boom time has its discontents. Though Hispanos have long been well-represented in local government, Chicano and Native American activists have long argued that these were just a manifestation of an old landed elite which is often out of touch with the rank and file citizenry. A recent scandal which revealed how Natives and Spanish-surnamed residents were targeted for brutal treatment by local police tended to show that mere representation is not enough to ensure equity and justice from the government, even in a city where Anglos are in the minority. The way that the city has developed also poses potential long-term problems. The city's growth has largely passed over the city's south-western quarter and adjacent unincorporated communities, which still cling to an older economy harkening back to the days when Albuquerque was a transportation hub for agriculture in the Río Grande Valley. These largely Hispano “traditional” communities are losing population to other parts of the city, leaving them hollow and vulnerable to gentrification. Activists in the unincorporated area south of the city are contemplating incorporation as “South Valley” in an effort to have some control over development. While other cities have experienced similar growing pains, Albuquerque's unique history and political culture arguably make it well-equipped to deal with these issues. At the very least, its successes as a community show that it should not be easily dismissed as it once was. -Tom Prezelski, Resident Historian

This week on New Mexico in Focus, correspondent Gwyneth Doland is back at the Roundhouse to talk to lawmakers about fair representation and the funding woes of the state’s new Ethics Commission. The budget debated in the House this week doesn’t fully fund the new commission, which is in place to monitor legislators. Also, there’s a movement afoot to change the way New Mexico redraws its political boundaries. Doland, who authored a report on the state’s shortcomings, checks in on the effort to make state government better reflect its citizens. Senior producer Matt Grubs sits down with Tierna Unruh-Enos, who this week began a podcast called The Mesa, about the unsolved murders of women buried on Albuquerque’s West Mesa. The deaths of 11 women, one of whom was pregnant, are thought to be the work of a serial killer. This week marked the 11th anniversary of the discovery of the bodies. Gene Grant and The Line opinion panel talk about the budget that was poised to pass the House as the Legislature hit its halfway mark. The 7.6 billion dollar budget does not include the governor’s Opportunity Scholarship plan to make tuition at state colleges and universities free for all eligible New Mexicans. The panelists also look at diversity in the New Mexico Legislature, and a group lawsuit alleging a failure by the U.S. government to adequately clean up the pollution from a decades-old fuel leak at Albuquerque’s Kirtland Air Force Base.

Jerry Vance of Hilliard is a 75-year-old Vietnam War veteran who served two tours in Thailand as a U.S. Air Force pilot. The first in 1968-69 was part of a 60-day temporary-duty assignment with the Young Tigers aerial refueling wing stationed in U-Tapao, about 87 miles southeast of Bangkok near the Gulf of Thailand. As a Young Tiger, Vance flew Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers, which were responsible for refueling the U.S. military’s tactical fighter aircraft in midair, usually after the fighter’s aircraft strike on a target and while en route back to the base. “It was really a busy, rewarding job to give them what they needed to get their mission done,” he said. Vance pointed out that each aircraft has to be refueled at a different speed. For example, he said, a Republic F-105 Thunderchief supersonic fighter-bomber has to be refueled at a faster speed than a North American F-100 Super Sabre supersonic jet fighter. “We were in orbit most of the time in Thailand just to keep our positions, and they would come and find us,” he said. The fighter always comes up from behind, he said. Even if a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress subsonic strategic bomber were approaching from the front, the B-52 would fly overhead and return to the rear of the KC-135 refueler, he said. Vance also said it was never just one aircraft being fueled per flight. “It was a minimum two, sometimes four you’re refueling,” he said. “So they just took turns.” The biggest challenges – or “most exciting times,” as Vance describes it – were in inclement-weather conditions. Vance returned to the United States for a few years, learning how to fly Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopters – commonly known as Hueys – while in Little Rock, Arkansas. His second tour in Thailand was in 1973-74, this time in Nakhon Phanom, just west of the Makong River in eastern Thailand. As part of the 21st Special Operations Squadron stationed at the Royal Thai Air Force Base, Vance was flying Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters. The transition from southern Thailand to the United States and back to eastern Thailand wasn’t so difficult, he said. “The big shock is switching over from a fixed-wing airplane to a rotary-wing airplane,” he said. The mission there, he said, was to take people and supplies into “places Nixon said we never flew.” “We would take anywhere from five to 50 people in the back of our helicopter; we would take them out in the middle of nowhere; we would put them on the ground,” he said. “We’d leave them there one, two, three days, depending on what the mission was, and then we’d come back and pick them up – always in a different spot.” After the war, Vance remained in the Air Force until 1987 and spent time at the Hickam Air Force Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, helping to recover space capsules. He later moved to the Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, training pilots to fly Sikorsky HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giant" helicopters. Vance’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three clusters, the Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the National Defense Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with device and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
