New Skeletal Faces Push Boundaries with Until the Night: Punk, Metal, and Gothic Fusion Redefined

HEAVY Music Interviews

New Skeletal Faces, the genre-defying band led by Errol Fritz (vocals/guitar) and Don Void (drums), has once again pushed musical boundaries with their latest release, Until the Night. Following their debut, Celestial Disease, Until the Night showcases a bold evolution in their sound, blending elements of punk, gothic rock, metal, and more. In an insightful interview, Fritz and Void shared their thoughts on the album's creative process, signing with Peaceville Records, and what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's music scene. The band quickly points out how Until the Night differs from its predecessor. While Celestial Disease laid the foundation for New Skeletal Faces' identity Until the Night expands the band's sonic palette. "The songs are a lot more catchy on this album," Fritz explained. "It's just fucking catchy here to me." The album delves into a wider range of styles, from the aggressive, headbang-worthy Pagan War (arguably their heaviest track yet) to the darker, death-rock vibe of Enchantment of My Inner Coldness.Void also appreciates the new album's diversity: "There's stuff on Until the Night that's more punk, and stuff that's heavier than anything on Celestial Disease. It branches and pushes in every direction."Until the Night marks New Skeletal Faces' debut release on the legendary Peaceville Records. For the band, signing with the iconic label felt like a major milestone. "This is the first time I've ever been on a label of this size, so it's a big deal," Fritz said. Void added, "When we found out that they were interested, it was the easiest yes to ever say." The band had long admired Peaceville's roster, which includes genre-defining acts like Anathema, Paradise Lost, and Opeth. The support from Peaceville has been invaluable, allowing the band to stay true to their vision. "They immediately understood what we were about," Void said, noting how the label supported the band's unique artistic choices, including the gold foil album cover and custom vinyl variants.Speaking of the album cover, Until the Night features artwork by none other than Errol Fritz himself. Fritz, who also created the cover for the band's Sextinction EP, took a minimalist yet striking approach to the design. "Sometimes simplicity is better," he explained. "There's not a whole lot going on, but it says a lot." The artwork, which captures raw emotion, was a perfect complement to the album's diverse and atmospheric sound. "The minute you showed us those sick paintings of yours, we just knew they were the ones," Void said, praising Fritz's talent. The band also discussed making the music video for Ossuary Lust, filmed in a chapel in a cemetery just five minutes from Fritz's home. "We broke into this little chapel and just started filming," Fritz recalled. Despite the somewhat illicit nature of the shoot, the band had no issues with the church authorities. "Nobody stopped us. No priests walked in and tried to throw holy water on us," Fritz joked. The video, filled with striking imagery and a sense of rebellion, mirrors the band's aesthetic and attitude—uncompromising and raw.Another highlight for the band was working with legendary producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, W.A.S.P., and the godfather of Los Angeles heavy metal). "Bill is a legend," Void said. "His resume speaks for itself." The band recorded Until the Night themselves before bringing the material to Metoyer for the final production. "It was incredible," Fritz noted, explaining how Mitoia understood the band's vision and helped bring it to life. Fritz and Void formed a personal bond with Metoyer outside the studio, enjoying nights of casual drinks and conversation. "He's just a lot of fun," Void said. "We hit it off with him immediately."When asked what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's musical landscape, the band had a simple answer: nearly everything. "We're too heavy for goth, and then we're too goth for metal," Fritz said. "We're not political enough for punk. We don't really fit into current trends." This genre-defying approach has earned the band a loyal following, with fans drawn to their unique sound that blends elements from multiple genres without being confined to any single one. When it comes to musical influences, New Skeletal Faces draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of artists, including Celtic Frost, The Cure, David Bowie, P.I.L., and Killing Joke. These bands, known for their boundary-pushing styles, have significantly shaped New Skeletal Faces' sound. "Looking ahead, the band is eager to continue experimenting and expanding their sound, creating music that is as unpredictable and exciting as their live shows. As Void said, "We just want to keep making music that stands out and pushes boundaries."With Until the Night, New Skeletal Faces has delivered an album that is as ambitious as it is bold—marking the beginning of a new era for the band. As they continue to challenge expectations, one thing is clear: New Skeletal Faces is a force to be reckoned with in the world of heavy music.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

California death-rockers New Skeletal Faces will release their new album, ‘Until the Night' on November 1st, 2024, via Peaceville (their label debut). The trio that makes up the garish look and sound of New Skeletal Faces formed in 2017, and have been spreading the darkness of their reanimated ‘death rock' sound since then. 2019‘s Celestial Disease album woke the dead, but it's this new release that gets the creaky bones and rotted flesh well and truly moving. Think seductive & hypnotic gothic vibes fused with early Swedish black metal and Sunset Strip style heavy metal. It's hellacious, but that's exactly how New Skeletal Faces like it. We spoke to two out of three of the band, specifically Errol Fritz (vocals/guitar) and Don Void (drums), about the new album and everything that went into making it a reality. As well as digging into their past, present, and future, talking about spreading the wicked word of New Skeletal Faces further afield, and so much more. Terminators, thank you for your patience. After a couple weeks' delay, for which TDMG has a good excuse (two fucking hurricanes) and I have none, we're back! Or rather, I'm back, with a big interview. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Naughton, frontman of Winterfylleth and pioneer of modern pagan black metal. I asked him to draw up a list of five quintessentially English bands/scenes that fed into the Winterfylleth sound. These serve as touchstones for a conversation ranging from details of guitar technique to lyrical source texts to obscure distro history. On the show, we've often characterized Winterfylleth as a kind of tricky folk-cultural transplant project, “English Slavblack.” Talking with Chris led me to revise this portrait: Much of what I attributed to the influence of Ukrainian bands has older roots in Chris's native soil, in styles I hadn't necessarily expected. As for the question of English black metal, Chris has a thoughtful answer, a robust rebuttal to the old saw that “there's no such thing as 'English' culture." 00:00 - Intro 3:08 - Peaceville death-doom, songwriting for Winterfylleth 33:22 - Bolt Thrower, Carcass 52:45 - Is there an “English Sound” in black metal? Summer yawns over the horizon, but Terminus is interested in something a little colder: today's episode features both DSBM and material descended from Peaceville doom to add some well-needed cynicism to your time by the pool. First up is the return of Austere some 14 years after their last full length. Titans of Australian DSBM, Austere return no less powerful for their time absent, with material just as grey, lonely, and withering as their classic works. Beyond simple depression, though, Austere explores fascinating textural territories with dense, novel chord voicings, a patient, nearly ambient manner of constructing songs, and moments of triumphant melody which burst through the music's dense, suffocating fog. Highly recommended for DSBM fans and even those suspect of the genre. The other half of this episode features the return of Hanging Garden to the show, who made a great impression on us with 2021's "Skeleton Lake." Their new (nearly) eponymous full length presents an aggressively streamlined, pop-forward sound which manages to fully integrate the band's serious extreme metal pedigree with hook-laden, approachable songwriting. This record functions as a fascinating update to 00's Hot Topic stalwarts like Lacuna Coil, with just enough bite to keep noisemongers like us listening. While this is far more accessible than our typical fare, it's no less potent in its songwriting and craftsmanship. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:05:39 - Austere - Corrosion of Hearts (Lupus Lounge) 0:53:50 - Interlude - Totalselfhatred - “Total Self-Hatred” fr. If you're wondering why today's installment of Terminus took a while to get to you, it's simple: episode 111 is all about doom, so it moved a little slower. Amidst all the high energy death and black metal we've been covering this year, we've been waiting for the opportunity to cover records a bit more... lethargic. Call us Type O Negative, because today we're going slow, deep, and hard. First up: a mini review of the debut record by Chilean epic doomdeath purveyors Mournument, which fuses romantic funeral doom with Peaceville riffing and all the wistful sorrow you could ask for. Next up: the 13th full length record by Candlemass. Typically while writing these descriptions we try not to spoil our overall assessment of an album, but in this case, it's unavoidable: it's a rough one, folks. Somewhere in a murky realm between stoner rock, bad Manowar, and a hint of actual doom lie the remains of Candlemass, who present a record composed nearly exclusively of terrible songwriting decisions and musical theater cheese. Those negative nancies who appreciate us at our most critical will undoubtedly enjoy this episode nearly as much as we despised the record in question. Following is a record that makes its listeners miserable for the RIGHT reasons: the newest split between Grave Upheaval and Terminus alums The Funeral Orchestra. This came out back in August but it was worth the wait: this is a split that's more than the sum of its parts, feeling like a truly collaborative effort between the artists. Grave Upheaval slows way down and explores the dismal fringes of caverncore to great effect; TFO strips back their buzzing lurch to something more minimal, grumbling, and unsettling. The result: a record so empty, dismal, and harrowing it would make Mutiilation blush. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:06:08 - Mournument - Smouldering Into Dust (Ardua Music) 0:26:05 - Candlemass - Sweet Evil Sun (Napalm Records) 1:14:00 - Interlude - Reverend Bizarre - “The Devil Rides Out” fr. As Terminus trundles its massive bulk toward something resembling a conventional schedule again, we present an oldschool episode with a bunch of records, a bunch of different sounds, and a lot of confused late-night cackling regarding goats and the docking thereof. The opening ceremonies today are conducted by one Paimon Gate, a brand new project who blow the hinges off the barn door with their debut demo of primitive yet ornate black/death in the vein of Profanatica. Keep your eyes on this one- a full length will almost undoubtedly be an album of the year contender when it arrives. Following this is the new split by Rotting Kingdom and Encoffination, personal favorites of TBMG and TDMG respectively. A well-arranged split always functions as a complete piece unto itself, and such is the case here, presenting two distinct sides of the doom/death coin: RK explore a nuanced take on the more melodic Peaceville sound while Encoffination suffocates the listener with nihilistic minimalism. Party music it's not, but it's a great disc for the seasoned listener. Next up to bat is Downcross, a Belarusian duo who explore various fringes of black metal styles wrapped around an 00s trenchcoat black'n'roll core. Don't let that descriptor scare you away- this is subtle and rich music which employs its rock techniques in service of fascinating, eccentric tracks. Every track on Hexapoda Triumph could be the seed of a new band unto itself, and to hear all of these ideas bundled together and presented as a distinct unit is something of a revelation. Concluding is, of course, more brutal death, this time courtesy of deep south butcherers Perceptions of Torment. Longtime friends of TDMG, PoT finally present a concise, punchy debut record of Texas-style brutal death. Ripping technical tremolo riffs whip across a surface of mechanical blast beats which periodically dissolve into crushing NYDM breakdowns suitable for mosh pit homicide- in short, it's everything a growing Terminator needs. 0:00:00 - Intro/Paimon Gate - Seven Legions (Nuclear War Now) 0:23:01 - Rotting Kingdom / Encoffination - Wretched Enigma of Salvation (Selfmadegod Records) 1:01:00 - Interlude - Rigor Sardonicous - “The Dead” fr. One of our great dreams here at the Terminus Bunker is that one day people will say we jumped the shark, and only the old demo material is still worthwhile. In eager anticipation of our critical demise, we present an episode that would fit back in 2020, with several obscure, mostly independently released records that play around the edges of disrespected genres and styles. "Once they learned how to mix audio properly, it was all over." We agree. Opening the festivities is a presentation by The Black Metal Guy with Military Shadow, a Japanese metalpunk band which allows The Death Metal Guy to finally ask what the hell metalpunk is anyway. The answer, at least in the case of Military Shadow, is a high-flying combination of NWOBHM/speed metal and driving, raucous d-beat. It's an intensely good time- imagine Impaled Nazarene without the black metal and you have a pretty good idea. Following is the second full-length by Isataii, a Los Angeles duo who emerged in 2021 and have released an astounding amount of material over the past year. Don't let this get confused for a lack of quality control, however- Isataii's music reaches back to the ooze of mid-00s black metal, typically decried as a dark age for the genre, but was secretly creatively fertile. Somewhere between Franco-Finnish, DSBM, and stomping Swedish, Isataii strips down modern riff forms and places them into the blocky structures of primitive 2nd wave or USBM, resulting in a record for patricians only. Wrapping up is the newest LP by Deadlife, a similarly prolific Swedish one man project which plays... DSBM? Maybe? Discussion in this segment centers around what DSBM means anyway, given that Deadlife's music in large part reflects the strains of Peaceville doom and Katatonia rather than anything conventionally "black metal." Regardless of genre, Deadlife has mastered the resurrection of conventional riff forms of old, playing familiar melodies with a physical power and nuance rarely seen in the years since the style's heyday. 0:00:00 - Intro/Military Shadow - Violence Reigns (Black Konflik) 0:29:28 - Interlude - Syphilitic Vaginas - “Black Sorcery” fr. It was a dark and stormy night at Terminus HQ- in a literal sense, since this episode was recorded over the course of a couple days when TDMG's power was knocked out mid-recording. Dark forces conspire against us, but we drive ever forward in the name of Sword Boy Summer, now fully upon us. Today's theme? The return of "uncool" styles of metal from the mid-90s and 00s, just barely old enough to inspire feelings of nostalgia in your hosts, finally vindicated in their love of all the music they were bullied about in high school. The episode open's with a Terminus landmark: The Black Metal Guy's first ever brutal death metal submission. Predictably, it's an odd one: Blind Hate operates in the deepest reaches of the Japanese death metal scene but takes their influences from the most thuggish and ruggish elements of NYDM circa '97. TDMG predictably spergs out, rushing to recommend all the OTHER bands his cohost now needs to listen to. Beyond the immediate love of creeping, crawling, crushing hardcore breakdowns, however, is a work of considerable depth which reveals more and more on subsequent listens. In a twist of hideous irony, it's TDMG that brings spartan black metal to the table in the form of Gallows. This Salem, Massachusetts duo plays black metal that was nowadays when your hosts grew up but is now almost oldschool- the clattering, discordant strains of Under a Funeral Moon and the oldest work by Mutiilation could be straight out of the late 90s were it not for subtle gestures at modern songwriting standards. It's a fun record with both Unholy Black Metal style rippers as well as slow-burn stuff for the more refined. We return from our interlude with a blast from TDMG's past with the new EP by Thy Light, a project from the last gasps of DSBM before that scene collapsed. Have you heard DSBM before? You've kind of heard this, then, but it's the little things that count- subtle harmonic color, wonderful rhythmic arrangements and- face-melting guitar solos? Two sprawling tracks announce the return of one of DSBM's unsung heroes, much to the pleasure of your hosts. Back in the day it was just Suicidal Black Metal! I can't handle you whippersnappers! Concluding the episode is the newest release by Hanging Garden, a melodic, goth-inflected doom/death band drawn from the old Peaceville style who liven things up with remarkable poise and pacing. This is far outside of the usual Terminus wheelhouse but undeniably excellent, making new converts to the kvlt of clean female vocals and tambourine accompaniment. Terminus listeners are exactly the sort of weirdos who would love the transitional records by bands like Paradise Lost and Amorphis, so here's a band for you, who attempt to convert those awkward, fawn-like steps into a limestone-solid foundation to build upon.   0:00 - Intro 0:05:55 - Blind Hate - Shinbe - Expulsion of Foreigners (Rock Stakk Records) 0:46:35 - Gallows - 66 Black Wings (Katafalque) 1:21:59 - Interlude - Avsky - Fuck Your Values, Fuck Your Beliefs fr. As the days grow short and the nights grow long, The Black Metal Guy drags himself out of bed to Storm of The Light's Bane and Welcome My Last Chapter, pulls up the hood on his wizard's cowl, and prepares for a Terminus write-up..... Though this week's show tends towards all sorts of swirling, low-end chthonic gloom, we lead off with a flash of sunlight on plate armor, and the gleam of a witch's eye from a scrying stone. After two years of silence and preparation, along with a pivotal line-up change, Mongrel's Cross return with a mighty work of effortlessly flowing, magisterial black thrash. The Death Metal Guy is a longtime skeptic of the Aussie sound -- can the soaring leads and viciously jabbing vocals win him over? We follow that up with a close listen to a split from two German bands with intensely complementary takes on High IQ War Metal. Hadopelagyal channel their obsession with the ocean's deepest nightside zones into the "cavernous black/death" aesthetic, but show a greater interest in composition than guitar tone, and treat their extended atmospheric passages as real music rather than filler.  Thorybos plays more minimalistic, barbarian attack riffs, but with equal if not greater influence by ritual-industrial sampling procedures. Between these two bands, there's real potential for a new sound. On the second half of the show, we check out the debut EP from a rumbling, droning black/death band that bills its sound as "Hate Forest meets Bolzer." But if that's the conceptual starting point, what is this project actually doing? The Death Metal Guy has some interesting advice. Finally, we close with an even bleaker record, the blastbeat-driven funeral doom of Sweden's Gravkväde. I try not to call things "crushing" in these writeups, but it's pretty damn crushing -- and not in the way you expect. This leads us into a broader discussion on the coolness of classic 90s funeral doom, a sound yet to be processed by the modern underground.   00:00 - Introductory bullshitting 02:58 - Terminus News ft. a Filipino band called Asgardsrei (Hessian Firm) 16:38 - Rundown of bands and labels 19:44 - Mongrel's Cross - Arcana, Scrying and Revelation (Hell's Headbangers) 01:01:58 - Hadopelagyal / Thorybos - Conjuring Subterranean Vortex (Amor Fati Productions) 01:33:43 - Interlude - Ayat - "Raw War (Beirut Unveils Her Pussy Once More)" fr. The album title, 'URSA', (the acronym for "Union desRepubliques Socialistes Animales"), was the title initially chosen for theFrench translation of George Orwell's masterpiece novel Animal Farm. Lyrically and conceptually the album is a statement against the squalor of an Orwellian apocalypse Novembre feel we're committing towards the Earth and its sons.
