In the second part of our interview with Vince Verkay, drummer and co-founding member of death doom legends Evoken, we talk about recording the new album. After nearly 2 decades since the band's Shadows of Night Descending record, the band return to the studio to work with guitar legend and sound engineer extraordinaire, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. Next, we move to an ingenious top 3 list discussion created by Markisan: "When I listen to Evoken I am often transported to hauntingly immersive worlds. I get lost in the sinister tendrils of atmosphere that the band unravels in every song. They tear open passageways to dark and forgotten places, and conjure experiences and feelings both imagined and real. Their music is so sweeping and cinematic that it often reminds me of great film scores, which made me think about the movies I love. So, with that in mind, I think the right question for the countdown is: What 3 films had a significant impact on us emotionally and creatively, and why?" New Skeletal Faces, the genre-defying band led by Errol Fritz (vocals/guitar) and Don Void (drums), has once again pushed musical boundaries with their latest release, Until the Night. Following their debut, Celestial Disease, Until the Night showcases a bold evolution in their sound, blending elements of punk, gothic rock, metal, and more. In an insightful interview, Fritz and Void shared their thoughts on the album's creative process, signing with Peaceville Records, and what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's music scene.The band quickly points out how Until the Night differs from its predecessor. While Celestial Disease laid the foundation for New Skeletal Faces' identity Until the Night expands the band's sonic palette. "The songs are a lot more catchy on this album," Fritz explained. "It's just fucking catchy here to me." The album delves into a wider range of styles, from the aggressive, headbang-worthy Pagan War (arguably their heaviest track yet) to the darker, death-rock vibe of Enchantment of My Inner Coldness.Void also appreciates the new album's diversity: "There's stuff on Until the Night that's more punk, and stuff that's heavier than anything on Celestial Disease. It branches and pushes in every direction."Until the Night marks New Skeletal Faces' debut release on the legendary Peaceville Records. For the band, signing with the iconic label felt like a major milestone. "This is the first time I've ever been on a label of this size, so it's a big deal," Fritz said. Void added, "When we found out that they were interested, it was the easiest yes to ever say." The band had long admired Peaceville's roster, which includes genre-defining acts like Anathema, Paradise Lost, and Opeth. The support from Peaceville has been invaluable, allowing the band to stay true to their vision. "They immediately understood what we were about," Void said, noting how the label supported the band's unique artistic choices, including the gold foil album cover and custom vinyl variants.Speaking of the album cover, Until the Night features artwork by none other than Errol Fritz himself. Fritz, who also created the cover for the band's Sextinction EP, took a minimalist yet striking approach to the design. "Sometimes simplicity is better," he explained. "There's not a whole lot going on, but it says a lot." The artwork, which captures raw emotion, was a perfect complement to the album's diverse and atmospheric sound. "The minute you showed us those sick paintings of yours, we just knew they were the ones," Void said, praising Fritz's talent.The band also discussed making the music video for Ossuary Lust, filmed in a chapel in a cemetery just five minutes from Fritz's home. "We broke into this little chapel and just started filming," Fritz recalled. Despite the somewhat illicit nature of the shoot, the band had no issues with the church authorities. "Nobody stopped us. No priests walked in and tried to throw holy water on us," Fritz joked. The video, filled with striking imagery and a sense of rebellion, mirrors the band's aesthetic and attitude—uncompromising and raw.Another highlight for the band was working with legendary producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, W.A.S.P., and the godfather of Los Angeles heavy metal). "Bill is a legend," Void said. "His resume speaks for itself." The band recorded Until the Night themselves before bringing the material to Metoyer for the final production. "It was incredible," Fritz noted, explaining how Mitoia understood the band's vision and helped bring it to life. Fritz and Void formed a personal bond with Metoyer outside the studio, enjoying nights of casual drinks and conversation. "He's just a lot of fun," Void said. "We hit it off with him immediately."When asked what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's musical landscape, the band had a simple answer: nearly everything. "We're too heavy for goth, and then we're too goth for metal," Fritz said. "We're not political enough for punk. We don't really fit into current trends." This genre-defying approach has earned the band a loyal following, with fans drawn to their unique sound that blends elements from multiple genres without being confined to any single one.When it comes to musical influences, New Skeletal Faces draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of artists, including Celtic Frost, The Cure, David Bowie, P.I.L., and Killing Joke. These bands, known for their boundary-pushing styles, have significantly shaped New Skeletal Faces' sound. "Looking ahead, the band is eager to continue experimenting and expanding their sound, creating music that is as unpredictable and exciting as their live shows. As Void said, "We just want to keep making music that stands out and pushes boundaries."With Until the Night, New Skeletal Faces has delivered an album that is as ambitious as it is bold—marking the beginning of a new era for the band. Bloody hard.Formed in 1995 and born into a musical landscape already dominated by bands such as Black Sabbath, Trouble, Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Pentagram, Cathedral, Danzig, Monster Magnet and Kyuss, Orange Goblin spent many of their formative years deflecting criticism of their sound, defiant in the knowledge that while a sum of their many influences, they were also a force unto themselves.Combining elements of hard rock, stoner rock, doom metal and more, comparisons to the legendary bands listed above were bound to be prominent, but over the course of nine previous albums Orange Goblin have left their indelible mark across the music world, in the process gaining the respect and level of acceptance they so rightfully deserve.That growth and progression promises to continue on Orange Goblin's upcoming album Science, Not Fiction, which will be unleashed on July 19. Blending the aforementioned genres with some outside of the box, Science, Not Fiction is an aggressive, adrenaline-fuelled sonic journey of a band with one eye on the past but the focus firmly on the future.HEAVY caught up with founding member and vocalist Ben Ward to find out more."This one's different," he measured. "Obviously, it's our first album for Peaceville Records and the whole campaign has been far more hands on than we've ever had before. In the past we might have just delivered the record to the label and said right, you get on with that, but with this record the label have been really proactive and enthusiastic in getting us to be involved in the marketing. It's been a really strong campaign. There's been three singles released so far and all had videos for them. We've got another video and single coming just prior to the release. We're doing some album launch shows here in London and Leeds in the UK and we've got a summer of festivals lined up to promote it. It's all go at the moment. We're definitely not sitting back and letting it happen. Ben talks about how Orange Goblin was formed, the early years of the band, his booking agency Route One Booking, signing with Peaceville Records and the addition of Harry Armstrong on bass duties. Es considerada la banda progenitora del estilo epic doom, por implementar voces limpias y operáticas entre tenores y barítonos, gracias a los principales cantantes que han sido parte de la agrupación, como Johan Längqvist, Robert Lowe y especialmente Messiah Marcolin. Tras varios cambios en su formación, finalmente se unieron a la banda los guitarristas Lars "Lasse" Johansson, Mats "Mappe" Björkman y el baterista Jan Lindh, quienes junto a Leif Edling y el vocalista Messiah Marcolin completaron la formación clásica de Candlemass, la cual grabó los álbumes Nightfall (1987), Ancient Dreams (1988), Tales of Creation (1989) y Candlemass (2005). Candlemass es, además, el séptimo mejor artista en ventas proveniente de Suecia, vendiendo hasta 2010 más de 15 millones de álbumes alrededor del mundo. Originalmente la agrupación solía llamarse Nemesis cuando en 1982 Leif Edling, quien por entonces también se desempeñaba como cantante, reclutó a los guitarristas Anders Wallin y Christian Weberyd junto al baterista Mats Ekström. Fue en 1984 después de haber publicado un demo y un EP, que Leif Edling decide cambiar el nombre de la banda por Candlemass, en el proceso Anders Wallin abandona la banda y al año siguiente Christian Weberyd también se retira, es entonces cuando Leif y Mats Ekström deciden reclutar en 1985 al guitarrista Mats "Mappe" Björkman para comenzar a trabajar en su álbum debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. El primer álbum de Candlemass, publicado en 1986 es considerado ampliamente como un hito en la escena del doom metal, cuyo título no solo bautiza al nuevo estilo creado por ellos, sino también al doom metal en general, pues si bien ya se había estado gestando desde 1970 gracias a Black Sabbath, no fue sino hasta más de una década después que recibió un nombre propio. Fue el padre de Mats Ekström quien diseñó la característica portada del disco y que ha servido como el logo de la banda desde entonces. La formación del grupo en dicho disco consistía en Leif Edling en el bajo, Mats Ekström en la batería, Mats "Mappe" Björkman en la guitarra y Johan Längqvist como cantante. La voz del barítono Johan Längqvist sirvió para que la banda comenzara a forjarse una identidad única en el mundo del heavy metal, a pesar de ello y del rápido ascenso de la reputación del grupo, nunca hizo parte formalmente de la banda aún después de la insistencia y del esfuerzo de los músicos para que permaneciera con ellos, por tal motivo Candlemass se vio en la obligación de buscar un nuevo cantante de tiempo completo, poniendo su atención en el joven Bror Jan Alfredo Marcolin, mejor conocido como Messiah Marcolin, quien recién había dejado la banda Mercy en donde aparte de cantar y escribir también tocaba la batería. En lugar de audicionar frente a ellos, cantó algunos temas del Epicus Doomicus Metallicus por teléfono mientras la madre de Marcolin sostenía el auricular, impresionados por su desempeño inmediatamente le ofrecieron el puesto como nuevo cantante mientras el guitarrista líder Lars "Lasse" Johansson también era reclutado junto al nuevo baterista Jan Lindh, dando así inicio a la formación clásica de la banda. El siguiente álbum que grabaron fue Nightfall (1987), reconocido como uno de los mejores discos de doom metal jamás realizados y el cual dio una nueva dimensión al grupo debido al cambio en la formación. Los siguientes álbumes fueron Ancient Dreams (1988) y Tales of Creation (1989). En 1990 un disco en directo vio la luz. Por esa época, las diferencias comenzaron a surgir entre los miembros del grupo, terminando en la decisión de Messiah Marcolin de abandonar la banda. Después de la salida de Marcolin, Candlemass reclutó al futuro cantante de Therion, Thomas Vikström, para grabar el disco Chapter VI (1992). El disco no tuvo mucho éxito, y tras poco tiempo el grupo se disolvió, principalmente por la decisión de Leif de formar otro proyecto llamado Abstrakt Algebra. El proyecto no salió todo lo bien que Leif hubiera deseado, resultando ser una gran pérdida de dinero. Por ello Leif resucitó el nombre de Candlemass, junto a una formación completamente nueva para grabar dos nuevos discos de estudio: Dactylis Glomerata (1998) (al parecer es el nombre científico de una planta a la que Leif Edling es alérgico) en donde contó con el apoyo del guitarrista Michael Amott y From the 13th Sun (1999). Sin tener el éxito de anteriores álbumes, estos discos fueron muy bien recibidos por la crítica y el público, a pesar de que la voz más "sucia" y "rasposa" del vocalista Björn Flodkvist había ofrecido un cambio de estilo notorio. En el año 2002, la formación clásica de Candlemass decidieron reagruparse, lanzándose a una gira por Europa que tuvo un gran éxito entre los fanes, resultando en la grabación de un disco en directo. Sus primeros discos fueron remasterizados (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams y Tales of Creation), junto con el lanzamiento de un DVD, titulado Documents of Doom, con material nunca visto de uno de los conciertos de la banda. Finalmente, la formación clásica reunida una vez más con Messiah Marcolin trabajó en un nuevo disco de estudio, y tras muchos problemas, en los que el grupo se declaró disuelto un par de veces, lanzaron en 2005 el álbum homónimo Candlemass, con el cual ganaron un Grammy sueco ese mismo año pero Marcolin abandonó la banda una vez más al año siguiente. También existe una edición especial de dicho disco que cuenta con la participación del exvocalista de Black Sabbath, Tony Martin en algunas canciones. En reemplazo de Messiah Marcolin entró el cantante Robert Lowe, líder de los también pioneros del epic doom Solitude Aeturnus en 2006, con quienes grabó los aclamados álbumes King of the Grey Islands (2007), Death Magic Doom (2009) y Psalms for the Dead (2012), considerado el disco final de la agrupación. No obstante y después de 6 años como miembro de la agrupación, Robert fue expulsado de la banda en el 2012 por la tensión que provocaba sobre los demás al no memorizar las letras de las canciones, llegando incluso a leerlas de un cuaderno mientras aún se encontraba sobre la tarima, a pesar de que él mismo afirma ser el mejor cantante que la banda ha tenido. Como reemplazo de Robert entró a la agrupación el vocalista Mats Levén, antiguo integrante de la banda de Yngwie Malmsteen, y quien estuvo presente en la banda en 2006 después de la salida de Messiah Marcolin mientras se definía el futuro de la banda. Actualmente se desempeña como el principal cantante de las giras de la agrupación, quienes en el 2016 decidieron por primera vez embarcarse en un tour por América Latina, una región poco explorada por el doom metal en donde se presentarán en el mes de abril por México, Colombia, Perú, Chile, Argentina y Brasil. El 3 de junio de este año (2016) salió un EP de cuatro canciones titulado "Death Thy Lover" a través de Napalm Records. El pasado mes de abril su antigua discográfica (Peaceville Records) lanzó al mercado un triple álbum recopilatorio que incluye también dos DVD titulado "Behind The Wall Of Doom" exactamente el 28 de abril salió a la venta.

I was delighted to welcome James McBain of Hellripper to the Metal Cell Podcast to have a chat with myself and my co-host Jack O'Neill (Coroza/Gealach) about his new brutally fast and excellent "The Affair of the Poisons". Hellripper has been fast gaining a reputation for whipping up an infectious storm of blackened speed metal greatness in the spirit of old and are one of the most electrifying young, up & coming metal acts in the scene today. Inspired by the likes of the old-school legends including Venom, Kreator, Sabbat [JPN] and Metallica, McBain formed Hellripper in 2014 and with the release of the debut EP The Manifestation of Evil shortly after, James band have been whipping up crowds into a frenzy across the UK and Europe. Holy crap, we made it to Episode 40 of The Nine Circles Audio Thing! It may be May, but this here is the Album of the Month for April which is City Burials by veteran Swedish art/doom/metal/anything goes rockets Katatonia. Buke once again captains the episode joined by Vince, Ian, Angela, Charles, and Hera, who had the pick for the month! Hearts may be divided concerning the latest by Katatonia, which traverses a family wide spectrum of styles. But that doesn't stop our stalwart staff from making this one of our longest episodes ever as the team discusses the bait-and-switch of lead single "Lacquer", the merits of prog elements in metal, and whether it's worth checking out the band's earlier, more overtly black metal releases (ed. note: It is. Very much so). All that and a "what else drove our boats" section that clock in at almost an hour makes this episode chock full of stuff to keep you occupied and content during the Spring of COVID. Noen band skulle jeg gjerne ha tatt en ny prat med. I 2012 var jeg Inferno-reporter for Pyro på NRK P3, og jeg hadde ett oppdrag: Å spørre artistene om deres beste rockeminne, og be dem si: "Mitt beste rockeminne er..." Jeg skulle egentlig ikke snakke med Autopsy i mer enn fem minutter, men plutselig satt jeg der og stotret frem spørsmål likevel. Vi diskuterte horrorfilm, lengden på et perfekt death metal-album, kontroversielle plateomslag, folketomme konserter og Ace Frehleys soloalbum. Et norsk Autopsy-intervju er såpass sjeldent at jeg ikke kan fortsette å skjule det for offentligheten bare fordi jeg er flau! Siden 2012 har Autopsy gitt ut to album og to EP-er. Det har ikke blitt noen nye norgesbesøk, men siden bandet er booket til UK Deathfest i august er det lov å håpe! It's a crowded house, but not Crowded House because we're a metal site and I can't get anyone to do a retrospective on the genius of Temple of Low Men. Anyway, if you're reading these words you know it's Album of the Month time and - as usual - it's right under the wire. But when you have a new album from Darkthrone you're damn right we're gonna want to talk about it. That's right, folks...Old Star is our Album of the Month selection for May 2019! Chris has the pick this month, and his unbridled enthusiasm threatens to overwhelm the show.
