It's easy to feel siloed in life, as though certain tasks or relationships are only allowed to have one dimension. Laundry is boring. Work is serious. Kids are exhausting. Errands are annoying. And, while each of these statements is certainly true at times, they aren't the whole truth. Come to think of it, the people we love spending time around are the ones who don't let a single, pre-determined adjective around the tasks they have to tackle control the tone of their whole day.  They make like Pocohontas and paint with all the colors of the wind. This is one of the many reasons we love the Hidden Mickeys that you can find throughout Disney properties. The Disney Imagineers have a serious job with a lot of pressure to deliver to the exacting standards Walt set and guests expect. But, despite that, they also decided to level up the fun by creating a game within the work of making magic by hiding the mouse that started it all all throughout the parks. Take a listen and, together, we will brainstorm ways we can invite more light and levity into our everyday lives.

I'm sure you can tell from my enthusiasm that I was super excited to chat with this wonderful author about her upcoming book, Tidewater Bride, which releases January 5.  One of the fringe characters in Tidewater Bride is based on Pocohontas, so we discuss how Laura handled the portrayal of Native Americans, as well as her feelings on trying to represent any real person from history when writing fiction. Reading this novel is a wonderful way to get a glimpse of the USA's infant years. Welcome Folks - you are listening to the Pencil Pushers Podcast and I'm your humble host Mike Rosado. Today, we share my talk with the legendary animator, John Pomeroy - somebody, who in my opinion, is one of the most important figures in the field for the past 50 years. Listen in as we twist and twirl through his storied career working under the tutelage of the Nine Old Men at Disney, teaming up with Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to create their own animation studio, creating classics like The Secret of Nimh, American Tail and Land Before Time, coming back back to Disney as lead animator for Pocohontas, Atlantis, Fantasia 2000 and more. We also chat about burnout, how to have a successful work life balance, and what he's doing next with his new online animation school, Pomeroy Art Academy. This one is a real banger as our convo starts right out of the gates on how he, Don and Gary took a massive gamble and helped the world fall in love with animation again. And so, without further ado, I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our talk with John.   The Pencil Pushers Podcast is a celebration of the hand-drawn arts. I'll be interviewing friends and idols in illustration, animation, comic-art, and more. - Mike Rosado https://www.instagram.com/ekimodasor/ Produced and edited by Trujillo Media

In our twentieth episode we stay in the 90s for a classic animated film, “Pocohontas” released in 1995. This week is Thanksgiving and even though this technically isn't a Thanksgiving film it is on the topic that many of us were taught when we were young. However, the true Native American and Pilgrim relationship was nothing like the fairytale we were taught. Pocahontas is an actual  historical figure and we looked up what her real life was like and compare that to the Disney version. We question whether Disney handled this subject matter appropriately and even question whether Disney should have even made a film on this topic. In this episode we really get into the moral dilemma of “Disneyfying” a very horrific event in our American history. With that said, we LOVE all the songs and music in this film. We both can sing every word to “Colors of the Wind” and enjoy singing along while watching this movie again. If you love this movie, then watch it and singalong with us!

Stephen Schwartz is a master of musicals. He wrote Godspell, Pippin, and The Baker’s Wife; he’s written the lyrics for films such as Pocohontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted - and many others. His musical Wicked, for which he wrote the words and music, has become something of a cult; it opened on Broadway in 2003 and in the West End in 2006, and it’s been running both in New York and in London ever since. He’s received numerous awards – three Oscars, four Grammys – and he’s over from New York for the opening of his new musical, The Prince of Egypt, a stage version of the popular film. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Stephen Schwartz reveals how classical music gives him ideas for his most successful musical numbers. In fact, he admits, he steals ideas from the great composers “flagrantly”. The opening of Wicked, for instance, comes from Rachmaninov’s Prelude in C-sharp minor – listeners to this episode can hear both, and compare them. He has been influenced too by Carl Orff and the exuberant orchestration of Carmina Burana. He also talks us through the bass chords he has borrowed from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, and the two bars of Beethoven that he believes are the most moving music ever written. He reflects about the success of Wicked – and the “green girl inside us all”. Other musical choices include Bernstein’s Mass, Bach’s sixth Brandenburg Concerto, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and Puccini’s opera La Rondine. Alicia and Josh Davis are farmers (and both are, by training, engineers) on a plot they call Green Finned Hippy Farm, near Pocohontas, Illinois. They started life together, and their farming ambition, aquaponically raising ("green," finned) Tilapia fish. That was 2010. Today their rural 18 acres support hens in pasture, their family of three (son Bean was born there), organic veggie beds, and herds of goats and of the endangered heirloom American Mulefoot Hog.        Resourceful and determined, Josh and Alicia are figuring out farming as they go - helped by the Internet and their family-farming heritage. Innovations like their chicken truck and egg-washing apparatus continue to sprout, making their hard work more efficient. Farm events like Goat Yoga, Sips & Snuggles Baby Goat Happy Hour, and the truly sacramental Swine and Dine are growing their network of customers and friends.      Where there are now is inspiring. Where they aspire to be in 10 years, Josh sums up: "I envision a community where we're Their Farmer, like someone is Their Doctor." Alicia adds: "Our hog program is a conservation effort. We selectively breed to produce excellent genetics. Our hope is that by humanely bringing this animal back to the table, we can remove it from the critically endangered list." Having this Earthworms conversation - and reading Josh and Alicia's blogs - I am in awe.
