Hello to you listening in North Platte, Nebraska!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit mire) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe like me you could use a bit of good news right  about now. What if you could find the “best America there ever was?” Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Bob Greene found it in a small town, North Platte, Nebraska. As the story goes: During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Nebraska, on troop trains en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. What happened next?Prompted by one woman's idea this tiny town of 12,000 people transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen. Every day of the year, every day of the war years the Canteen - staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers - was open from five A.M. until the last troop train pulled away a little after midnight. In a time of coupons, shortages, and doing without that comes with war this community provided welcoming words, support, baskets of produce, fresh-baked goods, homemade sandwiches, magazines, books, bottles of milk, cauldrons of coffee, and treats to more than six millions GIs by the time the war ended four years later.Think about it. At a time of national adversity, crisis and deprivation because everything was going to the troops and the war effort, ordinary people pulled together to honor their country's brave sons by giving from the heart and their kitchens, their fields and dairies. Interviews with some of the volunteers and servicemen tell a love story of small-town generosity because it was something that they could do.Question: Yes, these times are perilous; but so was World War II. We might feel like we're fighting a war on our own soil for the first time since the Civil War. But we are not lost when we choose to summon the great expanse of hope that is the human heart. If 12,000 ordinary persons could care for six million GIs, what is in our power to do? Where is the next “best America there ever was?”Click to access book: Once Upon a Town - The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen by Bob GreeneYou're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" “No one understands the treasures to be found in life stories better than James R. Hagerty,” the New York Times bestselling author Bob Greene said in an advance review of Hagerty's “Yours Truly.” “Yours Truly” provides inspiring examples of life stories including both personal triumphs and disasters and injecting a dose of humor whenever possible. At The Wall Street Journal, Hagerty is known for writing about people who weren't famous but lived fascinating lives. His motto: If obituaries can't be fun, what's the point of dying? “Yours Truly” explains why and how people should take charge of the narrative of their life by writing or recording their memories, in long or short form. Having written more than 1,000 obituaries in the past seven years, Hagerty believes that everyone has interesting stories to tell and that preserving them can be the best gift ever given to friends and loved ones. “Being famous is not a prerequisite for valuing and preserving your best stories and the lessons you've learned,” he says. Contrary to popular belief, telling and preserving those stories isn't a chore to be taken up only in old age, Hagerty writes. Instead, young and middle-aged people should start keeping notes, recordings and annotated pictures. Hagerty, who grew up in North Dakota and has lived in Pittsburgh since 2005, is The Wall Street Journal's lead obituary writer. https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-r-bob-hagerty-38371a6/

Demonstrably dishonest diatribe, designed to deceive damage and destroy distributed by disingenuous dickheads driving division dissention and dividends as always been a thing. I don't know how long it was between the first human inventing the first god and then coming up with the first devil but I'd bet you could count it in minutes. We look at some of the hoaxes where Satan has been thrown into the mix to maximize harm and or profit. Like the persistent rumors' that various company CEO's like McDonald's founder Ray Croc and fashion designer Liz Claiborne have appeared on Phil Donahue, The Jenny Jones Show, Sally Jesse Raphael and Oprah professing their love of the devil admitting to donating company money to Anton LeVay's Church of Satan!Household goods company Proctor & Gamble have been battling an urban legend that paints the company as a conduit for Beelzebub for over 50 years now! What makes this hoax interesting is not the overly stimulated pattern recognition mind and wilful ignorance of your average conspiracy theorist but WHO kept it alive. We'll look at ridiculous claims about non-alcoholic grape juice in the Bible by temperance fundamentalists Al and Alice Lunden and how the Prince of Darkness himself has misguided the Catholic Church in its transubstantiation rituals. And we'll hear from corporate copywriter and Electronic Voice Phenomenon pundit Roderick Millington who claims to have Old Scratch's voice on tape! We'll also mention, Jim, Dan and Steve Peters of the Zion Christian Life Center in Minnesota, problematic columnist, author, commentator and former Alice Cooper roadie, Bob Greene, Multi Level marketing company Amway and pasteurization innovator and hero of the Underground Railroad, Thomas Bramwell Welch.

But, she was severely depressed, on antidepressants, and wasn't working out. But, then she was inspired by the Oprah Show. One day she was watching it and they were launching Bob Greene's book, Make the Connection. (Bob Greene is Oprah's trainer). So she bought the book and a treadmill. She was living in a tiny apartment in San Francisco at the time and barely fit. But, she would come home from work and watch Oprah. And at first she would walk on the treadmill during the first commercial of the show and get tired and sit down. Then she'd walk the second commercial, and so on. After a while she could walk during the whole show! Then she started walking outside but got hit by a car. That was December of 1996, and she was in a wheelchair. Tawni spent the next six months in rehab and physical therapy. When she was able to walk again I set the goal of doing a 5K. Tawni signed up for one that was part of the San Francisco Marathon. It finished at Kezar Stadium, where the 49ers used to play. It was a powerful moment. Tawni didn't know how long a marathon was and actually thought she had done the marathon! That's how little she knew about running. So, then Tawni thought that if I did 3 miles with a little training, I should be able to do 26 miles! Too bad you can't walk a marathon, Tawni said to herself And right then, a lady passed by with a flier saying, "Learn how to walk or run a marathon. The flier was for Team in Training. So Tawni, signed up, and in December of 1997 she walked her first marathon in Honolulu! Since then, Tawni has run over 100 marathons!

It featured sales leaders Gary Milwit (JG Wentworth) and Expert Sales Trainer Bob Greene. BOB’S TIP TO EMERGING SALES LEADERS: “What’s my advice for sales professionals today? First thing I would do is pick up the phone. When you’re having a conversation with your prospects, just pick up the phone and say, “I’m calling to see how you’re doing. I want to understand your business and what challenges you’re facing.” Once your prospect realizes that it’s not a sales call and that it’s a caring call that’s huge because now you have an opportunity to hone your phone skills and build rapport the same time.”

What does it mean to have four generations in the same workplace -- from babyboomers to Gen Z?  What happens when they engage in big cultural issues such as Me Too, racial justice and gender expression?  That’s the very issue that certified professional coach Ana Polanco tackles, as she helps social justice organizations bridge the generation divide and promote shared values.  In her career, Polanco has worked with organizations such as Amnesty International, the hospitality union UNITE HERE, and the AFL-CIO’s Labor Council for Latin American Advancement. In this episode, Polanco discusses: - Confronting difficult conversations among multiple generations of workers on potentially thorny issues of race, culture and sexual orientation in the workplace and in the larger society. - How these different generations of workers in social justice organizations think, talk and act about social justice issues and how that can contribute to disagreements and miscommunication within the organization’s mission. - Techniques to bridge these differences and promote communication that allows workers to foster a new, collaborative relationship.Resources include:Emergent coaching becomes nimble in complex times, Ana Polanco, Nonprofit Quarterly, 2019The Paradox of diversity in social change organizations, Heather Berthoud and Bob Greene, 2014Anapolanco.org

In 1968 British engineer Donald Crowhurst entered a round-the-world yacht race, hoping to use the prize money to save his failing electronics business. Woefully unprepared and falling behind, he resorted to falsifying a journey around the world. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the desperate measures that Crowhurst turned to as events spiraled out of his control. We'll also get some updates on Japanese fire balloons and puzzle over a computer that turns on the radio. Intro: The stones at Pennsylvania's Ringing Rocks Park chime like bells when struck with a hammer.
