The Panama Canal expansion allowed bigger ships to move through the canal; however, it also allowed an invasion of saltwater and saltwater fish into a freshwater lake, which threatened freshwater fish species and half of the country's drinking water. I dive into the unintended consequences of the 2016 Panama Canal expansion. Saltwater species from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are now invading Lake Gatún, displacing native freshwater fish and jeopardizing the water supply for nearly half of Panama's population. Find out how this ecological shift is affecting local communities and the potential solutions Panama is considering to address this growing crisis. There are everyday sandwiches and then there are heavenly combinations like this one the sweet, white flesh of tilapia crisply fried and sauced with olive-flecked tartar sauce. This is a sandwich for company, room temperature food of exactly the right kind-full of flavor, sophisticated, but easy to make. Accompany it with a bottle of good chilled white wine; then while away a summer afternoon. For very practical reasons, we suggest you fry the fillets in advance. In that way, any smell of fish, which deters some people from cooking fish at home, should have disappeared from your house by the time you are ready to eat. To keep things really easy, make the tartar sauce ahead of time, too. This brings us to the bread: Pane Rustico, a variation of country bread, is crusty and not too flavorful. It is the contrast of textures-crustiness on the outside, and softness within that makes it so appealing. You will have to assemble the sandwiches before serving, but even so, when it comes to dishes that are good for entertaining, these tasty sandwiches figure near the top of the easy-to-prepare list.

Turns out, that's precisely what they'll do if they end up in our waterways. In today's episode, Dr. Siwan Lovett sits down with freshwater fish biologist Dr Mariah Millington, who reveals the surprising capacity for non-native pet fish to damage and degrade Australia's freshwater ecosystems, and particularly the native fish that live within them. Discover how to best dispose of dead pet fish, how common goldfish and other popular pet species can grow to alarming sizes and cause severe ecological damage when released, Mariah's undercover research into forums and marketplaces on the Deep web, and some of the specific species which pose significant ecological risks to Australian native fish, whose populations are already estimated to be less than 10% of their pre-colonisation numbers.Mariah pulls back the curtain on the underground world of illegal fish trade and the challenges in regulating this thriving online market. You'll be intrigued by the prevalence of pet fish in Australian households and the secretive subculture of basement breeders who bypass legal regulations through platforms like Facebook and Gumtree. From the complexities of transporting fish over long distances to the hidden layers of the web where these transactions occur, our conversation uncovers the dark side of the pet fish industry and the ecological risks it poses. The threats don't stop there—Tilapia and other invasive fish species are making alarming inroads into Australia's waterways. Tilapia in particular continue to head further south. Learn about the reproductive strategies that make tilapia particularly dangerous and the potential for hybridization to increase their invasive potential. Mariah discusses the importance of public education, biosecurity measures, and promoting native fish conservation initiatives. This episode is a compelling call to action for protecting our native fish populations and the ecosystems they depend on.If you enjoyed this episode, please consider leaving a rating and review wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Bible people ate more fish than meat. Not for heart health, weight loss, or because it was so tasty (it is), but because it was cheap and available. And Jesus chose fish because he knows us and speaks our language.

The Sea Fisheries Institute - National Research Institute conducted research on the presence of undesirable substances in marine and farmed fish. Scientists found that in species imported from Vietnam and China, including tilapia meat, a higher concentration of lead was detected compared to other fish. But that's not all. The tilapia also contained mercury and cadmium, experts say, albeit in low quantities. To add insult to injury, scientists from Wake Forest University have shown that the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in tilapia meat is very unfavorable (too little of the former, too much of the latter). What can be concluded from this? "Such a combination can potentially be a dangerous source of diseases for patients with heart disease, it can also foster joint inflammation, be a factor causing asthma and other allergic and immunological diseases"- comment on the results of the research scientists for sciencedaily.com. So, you think you know fish? As a professional chef, I have encountered various instances where mislabeled fish is prevalent in the culinary industry. Although my extensive experience has given me an advantage, the average consumer may be less fortunate. It is disheartening to witness individuals unknowingly paying for fish that is not what they intended to purchase. Therefore, we must remain vigilant and educate ourselves on the fish we buy. Additionally, choosing establishments that prioritize transparent labeling and sourcing is crucial to ensure that we can relish our seafood dishes without any unpleasant surprises. In supermarkets, it is expected to come across mislabeled fish, such as tilapia, frequently passed off as more expensive white fish like snapper or sole. Tilapia is a mild-flavored fish usually raised on farms and is not as costly as other white fish, hence the mislabeling. On the other hand, Escolar is sometimes sold as "white tuna" or "butterfish," but it is not a type of tuna. This deep-water fish is highly prized for its buttery texture and rich flavor. Still, some people may experience digestive issues after consuming it, making it essential to know what you buy. Catfish is another fish occasionally labeled as mild-tasting whitefish to increase its price. This common fish in the southern United States is often used in dishes like gumbo and jambalaya. Its mild flavor and tender texture make it an excellent choice for your next fish fry. Pangasius, a catfish, is commonly raised in Vietnam and Thailand and sometimes sold as "basa" or "swai." Still, it may be labeled as a different, more desirable fish. It is a mild-flavored fish frequently used in fried dishes. Haddock, a white fish commonly found in the North Atlantic, can sometimes be substituted for cod. This fish has a slightly sweet flavor and flaky texture, making it a top choice among seafood enthusiasts. Mackerel, a fatty fish known for its strong, distinct flavor, is sometimes misrepresented as other types of fish, like king mackerel, sold as Spanish mackerel. Red snapper, a popular fish in the Gulf of Mexico known for its firm, white flesh, and mild flavor, is frequently replaced with cheaper fish varieties, such as tilapia or rockfish. Despite being less prone to mislabeling or substitution than other species, salmon and tuna remain subject to such errors. Various factors can contribute to the confusion surrounding these two fish, from their physical similarity to other species to the challenges of accurately identifying them through visual cues alone. When purchasing fish, it is crucial to make informed decisions. Consider opting for supermarkets or fish markets with a solid reputation for accurate labeling and sourcing practices. Inquire about the fish's origin and species from the fishmonger or store staff, and look for labels such as MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) or ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) to ensure that the seafood you buy is responsibly sourced and sustainable. Please familiarize yourself with the visual characteristics of the fish you want to buy, such as color, texture, and size, and consider buying whole fish as they are generally more comfortable to identify. Use seafood guides or apps that provide eco-friendly information and advice on sustainable fishing practices to make intelligent purchase decisions and maximize your investment. Did escaped slaves throw hush puppies out to distract the hounds from tracking them? Langston and David gather with ATL's own Mandal (Don't Tell Comedy) about this Facebook conspiracy theory. They go into tangents about Captain D's fish shack, tilapia being printed on 3D printers, and cod being the hotdog version of fish. Questions arise throughout the episode. Who originated Hush Puppies? How did this rumor spread so fast? Who else fries bread? Also, we learn Langston doesn't like chicken livers. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Gigi Ashworth. She is a former competitive snowboarder and horseback rider that has since become a popular allergen-friendly food personality and cook across social media platforms, with a master's certificate in Nutrition Communications from Tufts University. However, prior to obtaining her master's degree, she got her broadcast journalism degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and even worked as the 3 AM weather girl at Denver's ABC affiliate. When she finished her studies in Colorado, she moved to Los Angeles (she now lives in Georgia again with her husband and two baby boys, who find her adoration for salmon quite comical) to pursue a career in the entertainment hosting field. That career focus led her to start a humorous blog and YouTube channel called GiGi Eats Celebrities that showcases her personality and her extreme passion for realistic nutrition. This blog and YouTube channel turned into platforms where people with diet, nutrition, and health concerns, as her own enthusiasm for such topics stems from her severe diet-related issues (Crohn's disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS, and no large intestine), can get advice (such as traveling with food intolerances and/or autoimmune diseases) along with allergen-friendly/keto diet approved recipes that everyone can enjoy. Her platforms (she now mainly focuses her efforts on her Instagram page, which currently boasts roughly 360,000 followers) have allowed her to garner the attention of many (who have described her as having an infectious, no bullshit, hilarious, salmon-loving personality). This led to her authoring her first book, She Does Keto, which is an informational cookbook, just like Seduced By Salmon, however, it covers the topic of the ketogenic diet and why it's beneficial for women (and also contains 115 recipes). She was tapped to write a book on this topic because she has been living a ketogenic lifestyle for the last 18 years before it was even a “thing,” and researches this way of eating on the daily. As a devoted fitness enthusiast, a rather blunt and light-heartedly vulgar diehard allergen-friendly foodie that has been dubbed the Salmon Queen (she eats roughly eight pounds of salmon a week and has been doing so for the last ten plus years, and showcases this on the daily through Instagram stories and posts), she has been told that she is proof that you can educate and inform as well as entertain all at the same time! In this episode, Gigi Ashworth explains how she became The Salmon Queen on social media. Every single second of every day, Gigi craves salmon because of its great taste and fantastic health benefits. Gigi busts common myths around salmon and describes why you should think twice about buying wild-caught salmon during your next shopping trip. If you don't already, research and determine where the salmon you purchase comes from. Tune in as we discuss the inspiration behind Gigi's books, some of Gigi's favorite salmon recipes, and why you should never eat tilapia. In college, salmon was comfort food for Gigi. Eventually, Gigi started eating salmon every single day because it was delicious. A pound of ground beef will not keep Gigi full. While on the other hand, a pound of salmon keeps her satiated. Now, Gigi craves salmon every single second of every single day. [22:00] The Reason Gigi Recommends Farmed Salmon Instead of Wild Caught Salmon Most people think wild-caught salmon is the way to go. Farming salmon started to take shape in the 1960s. In the 1980s, they started to regulate farmed salmon. Farmed salmon is much better than wild-caught salmon because of how regulated it is. Gigi recommends Kvaroy Arctic: https://www.kvaroyarctic.com/ [27:40] Do Your Research: Where Is Your Salmon Coming From? There are a lot of toxins in the ocean. Wild salmon can have loads of toxins and mercury in them. Big fish will hold mercury, so you aren't supposed to eat swordfish. Also, wild salmon is being overfished and is more expensive than farmed fish. Why buy garbage salmon when you can buy farmed salmon that has been fed to enhance health? Before buying salmon, Gigi also researches where exactly it comes from. [31:55] Keto Recipe: Making Taco Shells Using Salmon Skin Gigi will skin the salmon to make her famous taco shells. Using taco shell holders, you can air fry the skin and have a healthy taco shell! Gigi loves to create a salmon poke with avocado, sesame seeds, and ginger using her taco shells. You can also fill the taco shells with sardines, scallops, chicken, or beef! [39:25] Why Tilapia Is So Incredibly Unhealthy For You Tilapia is a garbage fish! Tilapia is high in omega-6 fatty acids. You want your omega-3 and omega-6 ratio to be as close to 1:1 as possible. Unfortunately, most people get a 1:16 ratio in their diets for omega-3 and omega-6. [43:55] The Inspiration Behind The Complete Ketogenic Diet For Women The keto lifestyle is beneficial for so many people! Keto helps women with their hormone levels. Also, keto is excellent for endometriosis, PCOS, and weight loss. Hormones are what typically cause women to gain weight. With a keto lifestyle, your hormones will calm down, and your metabolism will kick into high gear. Scottie Martin and I discuss the role forward looking sonar played during the St. Claire River B.A.S.S. elite tournament, the choice to eat locally caught fish, knowing what you're eating and what's in it, where to source Tilapia, seafood fraud, and the use of Butterfish as a common substitute for Tuna in sushi restaurants. And finally, I relay my experience eating at the Le Poisson Bleu restaurant in Ottawa for the first time after receiving numerous calls on the Blue fish Canada phone line from customers looking to book a reservation, and the positive dining experience we enjoyed based on their exclusively sustainable and mostly local seafood menu. But there was a seafood choice on the menu that took us all by surprise. Scotty tells his own supermarket seafood story that led to his being escorted from the premises by the police. The validity of sustainable labeling is also discussed, and the recent issue raised by Watershed Watch Salmon Society over the sustainability of Pacific salmon as claimed by several prominent labeling services.

When you say "African cichlids", you usually conjure up images of "peacocks" from Lake Malawi. This connotation is reductive because it ignores two facts. 1. Cichlidae is one of the most species diverse families of fishes in the world. 2. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. In this episode of the podcast, the Water Colors team try their best to ignore the African Great Lakes (Lake Malawi, Lake Victoria, and Lake Tanganyika) in order to explore the diversity of cichlids in ecosystems across the entire continent of Africa. You can share photos of your real African cichlids with us on the Water Colors Aquarium Gallery Podcast Listeners Facebook group. Corrections: - In this episode, we often use the phrase "Rift Lakes" to refer to Lake Malawi, Lake Victoria, and Lake Tanganyika. The "definition" we are using is more colloquial than it is accurate to the conventional geographic designation for lakes within the Rift Valley region of Africa. It might have been more accurate for us to say "African Great Lakes". - In this episode, Charles said "Rubrolatochromis", which is a genus that does not exist. We were talking about genera split from Pelvicachromis and he managed to erroneously "upgrade" the species Wallaceochromis rubrolabiatus to the genus level. - In this episode, Ben stated that baking soda (AKA sodium bicarbonate) has a "kpH" of 7.8. He was conflating the concepts pKa reaction of sodium bicarbonate carbonic acid, which have the respective pKa values of 10.3 and 6.4, with the 7.4-7.8 pH range that a sodium bicarbonate system will buffer to. Addendums: - The genus Haplochromis was originally coined by F.M. Hilgendorf in 1888 in an attempt to start sorting through the "wastebin genus" Chromis. He utilized Haplochromis obliquidens as his type species, but this entire arrangement was thrown into disarray when it was realized that "Chromis" was already in use for genus of small reef fishes, making it's usage for Pseudocrenilabrinae cichlids a junior homonym. This confusion has resulted in over a century of the taxonomic relations of this clade being redefined multiple times and the relationships between these clades are still misunderstood. Book Mentioned in this Episode: The Cichlids of Western Africa by Anton Lamboj Cichlids Mentioned in This Episode: - Discus (Symphysodon spp.) - Ram cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) - Freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) - Apistogramma spp. - Nanochromis spp. - Common krib (Pelvicachromis pulcher) - Wonderful goby cichlid (Gobiocichla wonderi) - Xystichromis sp. Good morning, Good morning and Happy Aloha Friday from the farm! Welcome to Thinking Outside The Soil. Where we talk about topics related to the farmers and ranchers using hydroponic practices to grow the crops and creatures we need to eat. I am your Host, Sean Short Today is December 30th, 2022. Thank you for joining me today. This episode, I talk about exotic animals that eat hydroponic fodder. The most surprising industry that has adopted hydroponic fodder is the exotic. An exotic animal is loosely defined as any animal that is not a companion or used for livestock. Hydroponic fodder offers advantages for Alpaca, Elk, Deer, Buffalo, Rabbits, Tilapia, and many zoo animals. -- I would love to hear or read your thoughts. So please feel free to leave a comment or email me at sean@thinkingoutsidethesoil.com. Thats s-e-a-n, like Sean Penn. I don't always reply but I do read every comment or email. If you want to learn more about how hydroponic fodder helps farmers save water, improve livestock quality, and become better stewards, check out thinkingoutsidethesoil.com I am running a special offer so you can get a copy of your book. I bought a bunch, and all I ask is you take care of S&H. 4 Secrets to Mastering Keto Masterclass.
