An episode so good, it'll make you wish you had three ears. Buzzy Cohen (Baby Got Facts: Totally '90s Trivia) returns for another delightful episode, breaking down Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" and the 1990 film adaptation directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett and Gary Goldman. Reality, virtual reality, false memories, real (?) memories, mutants, great practical special effects, rods of air, a young Sharon Stone, and enough Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liners to fill a burn book. Get your EARS to Mars. We'll see you at the party, Richter. Hosted by Allan Traylor, Justin Remer, and Tyler Austin. Produced by Justin Remer. Recorded at the LAPL Octavia Lab. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire. Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.

Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Gary Goldman, board-certified ob-gyn and one of America's leading Functional Medicine practitioners. He's a member of the speakers' bureau for Grail, developer of the Galleri cancer test.
BREAKTHROUGHS IN CANCER DETECTION: New tests promise to revolutionize cancer diagnosis. Dr. Gary Goldman is a board-certified ob-gyn and one of America's leading Functional Medicine practitioners, and is also a member of the speakers' bureau for Grail, developer of the Galleri cancer test. What are some of the limitations of current cancer tests like mammography, colonoscopy, PSA, CA-125, PAP smears, and CT scans? What's the difference between sensitivity and specificity? How does the Galleri test enhance our ability to detect cancers? How was it developed? How accurate is it? Will it lead to overdiagnosis? Why is there controversy over a £140 million NHS trial using Galleri to detect cancer? Can “liquid biopsies” be used to find out whether cancer is recurring before it's visible on imaging? What about new genetic tests that predict your likelihood of developing cancer? Why the arguments over frequency of colonoscopies, mammograms and PAP smears? Is there a certain age when you can forego them? Is the new colon cancer blood test a good alternative to colonoscopy?
fWotD Episode 2666: Total Recall (1990 film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 22 August 2024 is Total Recall (1990 film).Total Recall is a 1990 American science-fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Michael Ironside. Based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall tells the story of Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker who receives an implanted memory of a fantastical adventure on Mars. He subsequently finds his adventure occurring in reality as agents of a shadow organization try to prevent him from recovering memories of his past as a Martian secret agent aiming to stop the tyrannical regime of Martian dictator Vilos Cohaagen (Cox).Shusett bought the rights to Dick's short story in 1974 and developed a script with O'Bannon. Although considered promising, the ambitious scope kept the project in development hell at multiple studios over sixteen years, seeing forty script drafts, seven different directors, and multiple actors cast as Quaid. Total Recall eventually entered the early stages of filming in 1987 under the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group shortly before its bankruptcy. Schwarzenegger, who had long held an interest in the project but had been dismissed as inappropriate for the lead role, convinced Carolco Pictures to purchase the rights and develop the film with him as the star. On an estimated $48–80 million budget (making it one of the most expensive films made in its time), filming took place on expansive sets at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico over six months. Cast and crew experienced numerous injuries and illnesses during filming.Total Recall was anticipated to be one of the year's most successful films. On its release, the film earned approximately $261.4 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year. Its critical reception was mixed, with reviewers praising its themes of identity and questioning reality, but criticizing content perceived as vulgar and violent. The practical special effects were well received, earning the film an Academy Award, and the score by Jerry Goldsmith has been praised as one of his best works.Since its release, Total Recall has been praised for its ambiguous ending positing whether Quaid's adventures are real or a fantasy, and it has also been analyzed for themes of authoritarianism and colonialism. Retrospective reviews have called it one of Schwarzenegger's best films and placed it among the best science fiction films ever made. Alongside comic books and video games, Total Recall has been adapted into the 1999 television series Total Recall 2070. An early attempt at a sequel, based on Dick's The Minority Report, became the 2002 standalone film Minority Report, and a 2012 remake, also titled Total Recall, failed to replicate the success of the original. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:10 UTC on Thursday, 22 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Total Recall (1990 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Salli.
We have reached another Don Bluth animation classic! The Pebble and The Penguin. Another cult classic that 90s babies and kids hold near and dear to their hearts! The Pebble and the Penguin is a 1995 American independent animated musical comedy-adventure film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The film stars the voices of Martin Short, Jim Belushi, Tim Curry, and Annie Golden. Based on the true life mating rituals of the Adélie penguins in Antarctica, the film focuses on a timid, stuttering penguin named Hubie who tries to impress a beautiful penguin named Marina by giving her a pebble that fell from the sky and keep her from the clutches of an evil penguin named Drake who wants Marina for himself. Towards the end of production, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer significantly changed the film, forcing Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to leave their film and demand to have their names taken off the film. The two would later start working at Fox Animation Studios. The film was released in the United States on April 12, 1995, by MGM/UA Distribution Co., receiving negative reviews from critics and being a box office bomb, grossing only $3.9 million against a $28 million budget. It is the final film to be produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios before the studio went bankrupt and ceased operations.
Conventional Western medicine is highly effective at treating disease, but is relatively limited when it comes to preventative care and root-cause approaches. Some practitioners have since adopted complementary, integrative interventions to enable a more personalized, holistic approach to care. Among them is Dr. Gary Goldman M.D, a Cornell trained physician practicing Integrative Gynecology and Functional Medicine in New York City. He joins podcast host Chloe Harrouche to clarify how integrative medicine unlocks the potential for women's health, highlighting the importance of thinking outside the box and finding individualized solutions. In this episode, they explore the root causes of chronic UTIs and the role of dysbiosis, addressing the microbiome as a crucial aspect of treatment. They also address the rise in infertility due to various factors, including age, stress, body fat, the use of birth control and its impact on hormone balance. This episode is great for anyone interested in exploring an integrative approach to their health and its ability to change their outcomes. Move over Prince Eric there's a hunkier animated dream boat in town. We watched Anastasia (1997) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we would seriously consider giving up royalty for a shot at animated John Cusack. Anastasia was the 1990's animated princess *not* brought to you by the house of mouse, but rather thorn in Disney's side Don Bluth and Gary Goldman - the team behind The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail and The Land Before Time. America's Sweetheart and ‘90s Icon Meg Ryan is charming as Anastasia and Cusack was making girls and little gay boys feel some type of way as hunky Dimitri. The tragic real-life story of the Romanov Royal Family and the ooky-spooky Rasputin somehow fit in this children's tale of lost love, and reuniting with family (Don Bluth certainly has a thing for families getting separated). Throw in amnesia, a talking bat sidekick and a touch of magic and no, we didn't forget the soundtrack (it's Everything). Don't sleep on the pop version of Journey to the Past sung by none other than Aaliyah. Iconic. Nothing like a kid's movie about the forced sexual pressure put on actresses. Also, don't make the kid with the adorable speech impediment try to say "Chanticleer" 1000 times. How will Rock-A-Doodle hold up? Host: Nic Panel: Matthew and Daniel Directed by: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, Dan Kuenster Starring: Glen Campbell, Christopher Plummer, Phil Harris, Eddie Deezen, Toby Ganger, Charles Nelson Reilly

Listeners Choice Month rolls forward with this breakdown of the Don Bluth's last hurrah (as of 2022, anyway) into feature-length film: the 2000 flop Titan A.E. In the span of this episode, the guys discuss Matt Damon's super-90s flippy haircut making it into the character design, the fantastic Don Bluth animation having a very weird collaboration with some sloppy CGI, the most obvious double-cross in the history of film, Bluth's adept skill at animating butts and much more. Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov, the fourth child and fourth consecutive daughter for Russian Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Tsarina Alexandra, was a disappointment at the time of her birth. She wasn't the long-awaited son and heir for the couple. He would come along three years later. And, well, the rest of the tragic story of the Russian imperial family is fairly well-known. But Anastasia has led a remarkable life post her premature assassination by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Rumours of her survival and escape to Europe swirled in the post-war years, culminating in a multitude of imposters claiming to be her. The true story of Anastasia and the Romanov family is so tragic, it's hard to believe anyone would want to make a movie out of it, let alone an animated movie, and a musical at that. Don Bluth and Gary Goldman's 1997 animation can hardly be accused of historical accuracy, but as the rival for Disney's princess-based movies of their Renaissance, Anastasia more than holds her own, with beautiful animation, an all-star voice cast, and a wonderful score and songs. Ironically, despite the rivalry between Fox and Disney at the time, Disney now own Fox, and they also now own Anastasia. That doesn't make her a Disney Princess, but it makes her close to being one. I would love to hear your thoughts on Anastasia! GET IN TOUCH.... Aljon Go and Dave Bossert share part one of their chat with Producer, Animator, Writer, and Artist, John Pomeroy. They also talk about the latest news surrounding Disney, new films, and animation. John Pomeroy is an animator who has worked for several major studios, including Walt Disney Animation Studios and Sullivan Bluth Studios. He has also worked as a producer and screenwriter on several animated feature films. Learn more about John Pomeroy at JohnPomeroy.com. He is known for his work on The Secret of NIMH (1982), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), and An American Tail (1986). John Pomeroy started work at Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1973 as a background artist and became a full animator in 1974 to work on Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. While working at Disney, he met fellow animators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman and began working with them on an independent short film project, Banjo the Woodpile Cat. In 1979 he, Bluth, Goldman, and several other Disney animators left the studio to form the independent studio Don Bluth Productions (later to become Bluth Group), which produced the film The Secret of NIMH and the animation for laserdisc video games Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. The independent studio encountered financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy in 1984, but reformed soon after as Sullivan Bluth Studios and opened a major animation facility in Dublin, Ireland. Pomeroy remained at the Dublin studio to work as the directing animator and producer on An American Tail and The Land Before Time, before moving back to America in 1989 to form a new US wing of the company. After working with Sullivan Bluth for thirteen years, Pomeroy was convinced to return to Disney by Don Hahn to work as the supervising animator on John Smith for Pocahontas. While working at Disney, Pomeroy also provided animation for the films Fantasia 2000, The Tigger Movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet. Pomeroy then left Disney once again in 2003 during the period where they briefly shut down their traditional animation department and subsequently started to do freelance work and was an animator for Curious George, and most recently, The Simpsons Movie, as well as Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz, Tom and Jerry: The Lost Dragon, Tom and Jerry: Spy Quest, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz, Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. He is a talented sculptor, and creates busts that animated film artists use to visualize a 3-D model of their character. John Pomeroy is also a painter of historic events, and builder of historic weapons used in movies. He is currently on the elders board at a Village Christian School in Sun Valley, California. For this Earth shattering movie, the guys welcome Zo from The Back Look Cinema Podcast with Zach & Zo to the podcast. Titan A.E. combines hand-drawn animation with WIndows 98 level CGI and, sadly, wastes its top-notch voice cast. This film also marked the last movie from Fox Animation Studios. The guys open the podcast with their customary questions for their new guest. Troy and Zo admit to liking Creed, Brad introduces Troy to the fart rock genre of music and Zo really knows Star Trek. Titan A.E. is directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman and stars Matt Dimon, Drew Barrymore, Bill Pulllman, John Leguizmo, Janeane Garofalo, and Nathan Lane. It's time for another Greatest Hiatus, and this time we take a one-week break from Farscape to discuss another rollicking sci-fi adventure we've alluded to more than once now: "Titan A.E." We're joined by a special guest: https://twitter.com/gh_cosplay (Greg), a cosplayer and podcaster who hosts the Star Wars Rebels podcast Rebel Heir together with Khaki. Like Kay, he's a fan of Titan A.E. and we had an absolute blast picking apart this fantastical film together! "Earth is a memory of the past; it's the 31st Century and humanity is on the brink of total annihilation, all except for one young man who holds the map to the universe's last hope: Titan. In a race against time, the human race has to find the Titan before the illusive Drej destroy it." In today's episode we introduce the Global Health Impact Network. You have heard us mention the network in previous episodes. So today our guest is Dr. Gary Goldman who is the founder of GHIF and GHIN. Global Health Impact Fund (GHIF) is a Strategic Venture Capital Investment Network. Our investor-focused model invests exclusively on behalf of our clinician and healthcare professional investor network. We provide an opportunity for these professionals to participate in a diversified portfolio of early-stage healthcare technology companies. These businesses are revolutionizing the healthcare industry, but the vast majority of clinical professionals are simply observers to changes that will upset their practices and worldview. GHIF offers a potent alternative to that scenario. GHIF investors will directly help shape the technological cutting edge as executive advisors to the Fund. We care not just for your investment, but also for your opinions and participation. Our typical prospective investment will be seeking between $250K and $2M in capital. For businesses looking for more than $2M in the capital, we have the flexibility to co-invest alongside other strategic venture partners who meet our standards for commitment to healthcare improvement. We would love to know what you took away from this conversation with Martyn and Gary! Follow @martyneeles and give your insight and questions using the hashtag #GHIF. If you would like to be considered as a guest or have someone you would like to hear from (GP or LP), drop me a direct message on Twitter.

Welcome Folks - you are listening to the Pencil Pushers Podcast and I'm your humble host Mike Rosado. Today, we share my talk with the legendary animator, John Pomeroy - somebody, who in my opinion, is one of the most important figures in the field for the past 50 years. Listen in as we twist and twirl through his storied career working under the tutelage of the Nine Old Men at Disney, teaming up with Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to create their own animation studio, creating classics like The Secret of Nimh, American Tail and Land Before Time, coming back back to Disney as lead animator for Pocohontas, Atlantis, Fantasia 2000 and more. We also chat about burnout, how to have a successful work life balance, and what he's doing next with his new online animation school, Pomeroy Art Academy. This one is a real banger as our convo starts right out of the gates on how he, Don and Gary took a massive gamble and helped the world fall in love with animation again. And so, without further ado, I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our talk with John. The Pencil Pushers Podcast is a celebration of the hand-drawn arts. I'll be interviewing friends and idols in illustration, animation, comic-art, and more. - Mike Rosado https://www.instagram.com/ekimodasor/ Produced and edited by Trujillo Media
Cameron is joined by animator and project manager Ese Oteze from the Nigerian animation studio Sporedust and Will Mattimoe, local RVA filmmaker to discuss the 2000 classic Titan AE! Released in 2000 by Fox Animation Studios, Titan A.E. (Ae meaning After Earth) starts, as one does, with the earth being totally blown to pieces. Co-directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (who also worked on All Dogs go to Heaven and Anastasia), Titan AE follows the space construction worker and son of famous inventor, Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) who is found by the nefarious Kroso (Bill Pullman) and his band of space pirates. Cale is revealed to be the living key to a second possible earth and home for humans, and the band embark on an action packed space adventure pursued by BLue Meanies- the Drej, aliens made of “pure energy”. We follow the scrappy band of humans and lizard-like friends as they maneuver for a showdown to determine the final fate of humankind in the universe.
