They say the only man Billy the Kid ever truly feared was Dave Rudabaugh. They also say that Rudabaugh taught Doc Holliday how to use a gun. But how accurate are these stories? And just who was Dave Rudabaugh? Join me today as we attempt to separate fact from fiction. We'll examine Dave's short-lived career as a train robber and find out what caused Wyatt Earp to describe him as the "most notorious outlaw in the range country." While we're at it, we'll also discuss Rudabaugh's time as a hired gun for the railroad, his association with Billy the Kid, what it was like being arrested both by Pat Garrett and Bat Masterson, his involvement in the shooting of Morgan and Virgil Earp, and a ton more! We'll even take a look at his various nicknames. Was it Arkansas Dave or Dirty Dave? Did he REALLY kill sixty-five men? Whose gang was it anyway? And what became of Dave down in Old Mexico? Lindsay is joined by author Nicole Von Germeten to discuss her book, Death in Old Mexico: The 1789 Dongo Murders and How They Shaped the History of a Nation. In a Mexico City mansion on October 23, 1789, Don Joaquín Dongo and ten of his employees were brutally murdered by three killers armed with machetes. Investigators worked tirelessly to find the perpetrators, who were publicly executed two weeks later. Labelled the 'crime of the century,' these events and their aftermath have intrigued writers of fiction and nonfiction for over two centuries. Using a vast range of sources, Nicole von Germeten recreates a paper trail of Enlightenment-era greed and savagery, and highlights how the violence of the Mexican judiciary echoed the acts of the murderers. The Spanish government conducted dozens of executions in Mexico City's central square in this era, revealing how European imperialism in the Americas influenced perceptions of violence and how it was tolerated, encouraged, or suppressed. An evocative history, Death in Old Mexico provides a compelling new perspective on late colonial Mexico City.Trained as a historian of Spain and its global empire at the University of California, Berkeley, Nicole von Germeten's research has taken her to dozens of archives and libraries on three continents. Her first two books investigated African populations and their social and religious organizations. More recently, she has written five books about the history of crime and policing in Colombia and Mexico. We discuss her book “Death in Old Mexico: The 1789 Dongo Murders and How They Shaped The History of a Nation.” Labeled the “crime of the century,” these events and their aftermath have intrigued writers of fiction and nonfiction for more than two centuries. Using a vast range of sources, Nicole von Germeten recreates a paper trail of Enlightenment-era greed and savagery, and highlights how the violence of the Mexican judiciary echoed the acts of the murderers. Nicole is an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University, and has written extensively on the history of crime, violence, gender, and sexuality in Latin America. As 1975 turned into 1976, The Hamlin Avenue Boyz made a memorable road trip from Los Angeles to Dallas in Vince's old red VW bus and did so by skirting the U.S. Mexico border all the way from San Diego to El Paso. Pretty much nothing was seen along the way but scorpions, snakes, and occasional illegals making their way to a new life in America.  The purpose of the trip was to move Vince from his former Hollywood digs to a new adventure in Texas.  What worldly possessions Vince owned at the time were found in that VW bus.  That along with a case of Coors Beer (previously only available west of the Mississippi River), a carton of Marlboro Cigarettes and a fairly large quantity of Panama Red secured just prior to departure from a Hollywood stuntman Vince befriended during his days spent on many a movie studio casting couch. The Boyz spent their time driving day and night, drinking, laughing, smoking cigarettes, and occasionally rolling up some ‘Red' in Vince's old red VW Bus.  The entire trip kept them close to the border, which at that time was a difficult line to see or follow.  Sometimes the road would take a turn south for a while and it was not easy to tell whether you were still in America or Mexico. On the edge of America's southern border, just south of El Paso right where New Mexico and Texas meet Old Mexico lies the famous rough-and-tumble Mexican town of Juarez.  Late one night a couple of hours west of El Paso; the road seemed to once again take a turn to the south only this time it didn't turn back east or north so the Boyz didn't know what else to do so they kept going.  Their decision that night was certainly influenced by the unusual contents that could be found in the VW bus. As the Boyz kept driving they could see lights on the horizon from some kind of a town a few miles up ahead and before long they also saw a sign for El Paso pointing in a different direction away from that town.  At the time, the Boyz didn't put 2+2 together, but the sign they saw pointing to El Paso was a little different than others they had seen along the way.  This one read “Por Aqui A El Paso” 12.6 km.  Even in their late-night condition, the Boyz thought it was a little strange that the distance to El Paso was not in ‘miles', but kilometers. The Boyz later figured out they had indeed wandered just south of the border under cover of darkness within a few miles of Juarez, but ultimately they wandered back north across the border well before reaching El Paso. Thanks to the many listeners of the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast for pointing your ears in this direction now and then.  And remember, you can send along your comments, questions, or topics for the Boyz to ponder: JustRollTape@mail.com Vince Hamlin Edward Hamlin TRACKS: Your ForeverAt The MoviesTime Travel TrailsGoing To MexicoWould Ya?Singer and DancerFamily JewelsHangin Out (With The Past)    MUSIC COMPOSITION / PERFORMANCE CREDITS: “Live Forever” > Little Big Town 2014 / Little Big Town 2014“The Green Mile Movie Soundtrack” 1999, “Forrest Gump Movie Soundtrack” 1994, “Titanic Movie Soundtrack” 1997, “Easy Rider Movie Soundtrack” 1969, “The Godfather Movie Soundtrack” 1972“Sky Trails” > David Crosby 2017 / David Crosby and The Lighthouse Band 2017“Going To Mexico” > Kenneth Duane Bantz 2019 / KD Bantz 2019“Would Ya?” > Devin The Dude 2002 / Devin The Dude 2002“Honky Tonk Women” > Jagger/Richards 1969 / The Rolling Stones 1969“Jewels” > Jon Stickley Trio 2017 / Jon Stickley Trio 2017“Hangin Out” > James Linck, Philip Desharnais, Michael Sabatini & Richard Edward Solecki 2020 / Mega Powers 2020 RECORDING ENGINEERS / BOARD OPERATORS: DB Cooper Dick Goesinya  Barry MyKockinher Craven Morehead PRODUCERS: Tiffany Rosedale Anita Hickey Ben Dover RECORDING STUDIO CONSULTING: Jack Herer & Friends CERVEZA CART ATTENDANTS: Anita Hardon Sofonda Peters Sharon Sipsome CATERING: The Cannibal Cafe Wonder Burger TRANSPORTATION: Harley Davidson    --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/edward-hamlin/message

With the holiday weekend and the approaching North Georgia State Fair, we're re-releasing our episode with Pam Treadway from the American Bull Riders Tour. Happy Labor day!   And we're back on Cobb Life, Brian Giffin with the BG Ad group. Your show rundown is presented by Credit Union of Georgia. We'll have Pam Treadway along in a bit, but first we'll tell ya a bit more about the sport.Bull riding originated from charreadas, contests of ranch and horsemanship skills in Old Mexico. It's popularity here in the US initially spread and grew in Texas and California. Over the years as rodeo itself grew in popularity, bull riding grew right along with it.Until 1936, bull riding lacked standardized rules, along with many other rodeo events. The Cowboy's Turtle Association emerged in response to mistreatment of cowboys by rodeo promoter W.T. Johnson during the Boston Garden Rodeo. Notably, four-time bull riding champion Dick Griffith was among the protesting cowboys. This association eventually became the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association (PRCA) in 1975, contributing to the growth of rodeo and bull riding. In 1992, bull riders decided to establish their own separate organization due to bull riding's immense popularity. Recognizing that bull riding could thrive independently, notable riders like Ty Murray, Tuff Hedeman, and Cody Lambert gathered in Scottsdale, Arizona, each contributing $1,000 to create the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR). Despite this, the PRCA continued to include bull riding as one of its sanctioned events. The American Bull Riders Tour returns to Jim R. Miller park and the North Georgia State Fair this year, and will surely be one of the more popular events, among many, at the Fair. The American Bull Riders Tour will also be part of a full rodeo event up the road at the Cumming Fairgrounds the first week of September, and return to the CUMMING Fair in October. There will be multiple opportunities to check it out. Coming up next, we'll learn more about the sport and these events with Pam Treadway of the American Bull Riders Tour. This week, Jim Santos talks to International Living Mexico Correspondent Bel Woodhouse about her article in the March 2023 issue of International Living magazine ‘Escape to Bacalar—Mexico's Lakeside Oasis'. Mexico's Riviera Maya—the stretch of coastline and tropical forest from Cancún in the north to the border with Belize to the south—is, for many, their first experience of Mexico. It's a heavenly part of the world, with the wavelets of the Caribbean Sea lapping against fine sand beaches which are almost unbelievable in their whiteness. Truly, it's like walking on icing sugar.Inland, the land is hedged by dense, low forest, in which the ancient Maya people constructed pyramids and temple complexes which are still a mystery to this day. Freshwater cave lakes—cenotes—punctuate the landscape, many of which are open to the public for swimming. Spanish Colonial towns and cities add a historic flavor to the experienceIt's a superb place for a vacation, whether your interests lie in cocktails on the beach and late-night dancing, eco-tourism, luxury wellness resorts, local color, or a combination of all the above. But where do you go when you want a vacation from the vacationers? Bel Woodhouse, who lives on the island of Cozumel, just off the coast from Playa del Carmen, knows the secret spots and hidden getaways. In this episode of Bigger, Better World, she talks us through the details and directions for a slice of Old Mexico hidden in plain sight just south of the main tourism locations. And it sounds tempting indeed.Join host, Jim Santos, as he meets Bel Woodhouse—expat, writer, videographer and International Living correspondent. If you're enjoying the podcast, we would really appreciate it if you could leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform: https://lovethepodcast.com/internationalliving.Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube

In a Mexico City mansion on October 23, 1789, Don Joaquín Dongo and ten of his employees were brutally murdered by three killers armed with machetes. Investigators worked tirelessly to find the perpetrators, who were publicly executed two weeks later. Labeled the 'crime of the century,' these events and their aftermath have intrigued writers of fiction and nonfiction for over two centuries. An evocative history, Death in Old Mexico: The 1789 Dongo Murders and How They Shaped the History of a Nation (Cambridge University Press, 2023) provides a compelling new perspective on late colonial Mexico City. Ogden, Utah - From the 1930's to the 1950's Henry Garcia Allred detected his way through and around Two-Bit Street, putting down a number of high profile burglaries and robberies. Born in Chihuahua Mexico and ultimately migrating back to Ogden. On his off-duty time he sang in musicals, acted in plays, and was in a barbershop quartet. How does a man possess the dichotomy to track down heinous murderers on a Friday and then sing in a play on a Saturday? Well, it turns out, unbeknownst to him, that his great-great-grand nephew is doing the same thing (minus the singing). We profile renowned Detective at the time HG Allred and sit down with his family member in an interview to discuss what being raised in a polygamous colony means in terms of real-world application to policing. On top of that we explore the culture from a polygamist colony in Old Mexico to the streets of Ogden, mixing that kind of upbringing with policing, and there's a couple of laughs along the way. NOTE: Neither of the Allred's involved in the episode engage or engaged in the polygamous lifestyle, but they were raised with that background with the modern Allred leaving that lifestyle and family to make his own way. Two family members raised under similar circumstances, doing the same job, in the same town, separated by 100 years and I find that fascinating. We hope that you do too.

*Episode 9: The Virgin of Guadalupe & St. Juan Diego * Brief Chronology: Early 1300s - Marian apparition and founding of shrine for Virgin of Guadalupe of Extremadura in Spain 1474 - Cuauhtlatoatzin ("Eagle that Speaks"), later known as Juan Diego, is born at Cuautitlan in the Texcoco Kingdom. 1521 - Conclusion of Spanish conquest of the Mexica ("Aztec") empire in central Mexico 1531 - December 9th through 12th - Apparitions of Blessed Virgin Mary to Juan Diego; appearance of image of Virgin of Guadalupe on Juan Diego's tilma on December 12. 1545-48 - The Nican Mopohua, recounting the apparition story in the native language Nahuatl, likely written. 1548 - Juan Diego dies. 1666 - Formal investigation of the tilma and apparition story by the Church 1795 - Acid spilled accidentally on the tilma during cleaning of its frame. 1810 - Image of the Virgin of Guadalupe used as banner of the Hidalgo rebellion. 1921 - Bomb explodes in flower display in front of the tilma, but does not harm the image. 2002 - Canonization of St. Juan Diego on July 31. (Based mainly on Appendix B of Our Lady of Guadalupe, cited below). Summary: We discuss the Virgin of Guadalupe (Feast say December 12) and St. Juan Diego (Feast day December 9). Just as millions of northern and western Europeans left the Catholic Church as a result of the Protestant Reformation(s), millions of Native Americans entered the Catholic Church. One witness reported that by his count as many as nine million baptisms occurred in Mexico in the space of about 15 years in the early 16th century. The flood of conversions came after the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared on the cloak (the "tilma") of an Indian named Eagle that Speaks, baptized as "Juan Diego." Over time the image has become iconic and ubiquitous in Mexican Catholicism. But hasn't modern science probably debunked the "miraculous" image on the tilma by now? Listen to our discussion of this vivid, unique Marian apparition and why it is something you need to know about. We also discuss how the Church generally evaluates Marian apparitions and private revelation. He discusses the relationship Billy developed with John Tunstall and how he was about to move beyond his run ins with the law to become a legitimate rancher before the murder of his employer took the Kid's future. Billy got involved in a conflict known as the Lincoln County War. His legend grew when he joined the Regulators after the death Tunstall. Mills reveals how Billy the Kid developed an extremely strong relationship with the Hispanos in Nuevo Mexico. He even discusses the rumors that Billy had a way with the ladies.
