Finding hidden Mickeys has become a fan favourite for all Disney parks, properties and films fans - but where did the trend begin? In this week's episode, we deep dive into the history and secrets of hidden Mickeys and explore how to spot these hidden gems around the globe.
In today's episode of Systematic Magic, we dive into one of Disney's most powerful but overlooked strategies: hidden details. From once-a-year Hidden Mickeys to pirate skeletons locked in an eternal chess match, Disney weaves storytelling magic into the smallest of moments. But here's the real secret: these details aren't just for show. They're designed to captivate a very special audience—the 1% who notice. And those superfans? They're worth their weight in gold. Tune in as Vance Morris breaks down why hidden details matter, how they create word-of-mouth marketing that no budget can buy, and how you can use this strategy in your own business. Whether it's adding unexpected touches, creating Easter eggs, or building stories within stories, you'll walk away with actionable tips to create a richer experience for your customers—just like Disney. What You'll Learn in This Episode: The role hidden details play in creating a deeper customer experience. Examples of Disney's hidden details, like the once-a-year Hidden Mickey and the stalemated pirate skeletons in Pirates of the Caribbean. Why focusing on the 1% of superfans who notice these details can amplify your business. How to apply Disney's strategy to your own business with surprise touches, Easter eggs, and storytelling. Key Takeaways: Hidden details aren't about being seen by everyone—they're about delighting the few who notice. Those superfans create a ripple effect, driving word-of-mouth marketing. You can implement this in your business with small, thoughtful touches that turn customers into advocates. Actionable Tips: Add a surprise freebie or handwritten thank-you note to your customer's next order. Hide a special offer or discount somewhere on your website or in your email campaigns. Share behind-the-scenes stories or fun facts about your business that give customers something new to discover. Memorable Quote: "It's not about everyone seeing every detail. It's about those who do—and the ripple effect they create. The 1% who ‘get it' become your superfans, and they'll tell the world about it." Buckle up and get ready for this Magical Moments all about Cars Land at The Disneyland Resort in Anaheim! On October 17, 2007, Disney announced a 5-year, $1.1 billion dollar renovation and expansion plan for Disney California Adventure. This included a major overhaul of several existing areas of the park and the addition of Cars Land, which was the first land in a Disney Park that's immersively themed entirely after a single intellectual property. On 12 acres, Disney built an exact replica of Radiator Springs, which is the fictional town in which most of the film's events take place. Cars Land opened on June 15, 2012 and when you're there, you honest and truly feel like you're in the actual movie. Do you remember the flashing traffic light where every third blink is slower? Well guess what? There's a flashing traffic light…and the third blink is slower! In addition to these fun facts, Scott talks in depth about the attractions - Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters, and Radiator Springs Racers. He also talks about all of the shops, places to eat, who and where you can meet characters from the Cars films, Hidden Mickeys, and so much more! Bryan and his daughter Mia run down their experience at Whispering Canyon Cafe. We start by discussing what we did to get to the Wilderness Lodge from the Polynesian Resort. Taking a Lyft definitely helped with this experience. We then talk about the tremendous lobby at the Wilderness. We talk about visiting the Carolwood Pacific room and looking for Hidden Mickeys while we waited for our table. Its such a great resort with many things to occupy you while waiting. We finally sit down at our table and discuss the shenanigans from the wait staff, the ketchup, the large sodas and eventually get around to the breakfast skillets full of delicious typical breakfast food, but certainly the Mickey Waffles! We finish up with a birthday celebration and how we then moved on to the Animal Kingdom. After our review, Mia goes rogue and wants to talk about Hoop dee doo revue. We discuss some of the fun we had at this experience and the food they served there. Finally, Mia gets around to talking about Ohana and some of the experience we had at dinner. We'll cover the food, the ambience and that we were able to listen to Happily Ever After during dinner. Last week, Kevin and Scott had a blast chatting about Kevin's 38-year and counting career at Walt Disney World. He shared about his audition for the role of Indiana Jones and some extreme detail about Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular including the 9-month training he went through to get the show up on its feet, some high profile guests who saw the show, and what it's like cracking a whip, running from a boulder, and dodging punches from a 6'7” giant. This week, Kevin and Scott continue their talk about what it was like to walk the red carpet and spend time with Harrison Ford during the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in LA. They also talk about Hidden Mickeys, visiting the parks with kids, why Kevin likes working for THE WALT DISNEY Company, and so much more. We hope you enjoy your morning routine, your drive to wherever you're going, your workout at the gym, your power walk, jog, or run, your walk with the dog, or whatever you're doing right now as you listen to Part 2 with Kevin Brassard! It's easy to feel siloed in life, as though certain tasks or relationships are only allowed to have one dimension. Laundry is boring. Work is serious. Kids are exhausting. Errands are annoying. And, while each of these statements is certainly true at times, they aren't the whole truth. Come to think of it, the people we love spending time around are the ones who don't let a single, pre-determined adjective around the tasks they have to tackle control the tone of their whole day. They make like Pocohontas and paint with all the colors of the wind. This is one of the many reasons we love the Hidden Mickeys that you can find throughout Disney properties. The Disney Imagineers have a serious job with a lot of pressure to deliver to the exacting standards Walt set and guests expect. But, despite that, they also decided to level up the fun by creating a game within the work of making magic by hiding the mouse that started it all all throughout the parks. Take a listen and, together, we will brainstorm ways we can invite more light and levity into our everyday lives.
We are joined by Roy Sato, one of the animators on the ground at Walt Disney Japan, to discuss the animation process behind this show, memories, anecdotes, how the industry has changed, in addition to spinning helicopters and Hidden Mickeys. Greg Weisman also joins us to discuss family dynamics, working with Kenner, and how one voice record session changed the course of the series forever. Also, what is that thing on Fox's face? Available on... Continue reading

Rounding out the holiday season, we take a look at Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, a claymation holiday film about the king of Halloweentown who discovers Christmas and attempts to celebrate the holiday in an attempt to breathe life back into his love of Halloween. If you've ever wanted to hear "Home" from Beauty and the Beast sung in German, this is the episode for you! Broadway veteran Ann Sanders ("Dear Evan Hansen," "Avenue Q," "Frozen," "Beauty and the Beast," "If/Then") joins her pal David to talk all things Disney. She recalls her childhood days in Chicago watching Disney movies on VHS, and how she always heard of these magical theme parks--but never went until she was working in San Diego on Allegiance when her cast mates took her to Disneyland (and where she was immediately recognized by a fan). Ann recalls that magical first trip to Disneyland, and how she has learned how Disney"always offers the expected and the unexpected." Listen as Ann discusses how she loved Belle as a kid, how Beauty and the Beast was the first show she saw on Broadway, and how "Beauty and the Beast" was the show in which she made her Broadway debut (after performing the role in Germany). From her appearance on the final episode of "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," receiving a sweet Opening Night card from co-star Nick Jonas, to the importance of diversity in the arts, Ann's experience as Belle was truly remarkable. She and David also chat about her time in "Frozen" originating the role of Queen Iduna (and the Hidden Mickeys on the Broadway set), her love of Baby Yoda, her interesting idea for a Disney Parks Parade, and then plays "Sorry I Missed the Party: Disney Edition."
