Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with 4-time Tony nominee Judy Kuhn, who is currently appearing in BECOMING EVE at the Abrons Arts Center. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary carer, finding the physicality of her character in FUN HOME, singing on the Tonys with RAGS and LES MISERABLES in the same year, how that performance led to her role in CHESS, working with Trevor Nunn on FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, why her role in ASSASSINS scared her, being voted the killer in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, acting with Glenn Close in SUNSET BOULEVARD, interpreting the role of Fosca in PASSION, auditioning opposite Boyd Gaines for SHE LOVES ME, and so much more. Don't miss this conversation with a Broadway favorite.

Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see? There's no more overtly theological (or more popular) musical than Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boubil's 1980 Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. From Valjean and Javert to Eponine and Fantine, this musical crams more pathos, prayer, and bad wigs into three hours than any other musical we know. Do you hear the people sing? _________________________________________ We talk about: Prologue (the Bishop) / Stars / Javert's Suicide – Javert, the police inspector, embodies a law-and-order version of the Christian gospel (shout-out to our Jansenist followers!) – and ultimately, the mercy he is shown destroys him. Are these competing atonement theories, or is there more subtlety in Les Mis' treatment of the Christian gospel and its consequences? I Dreamed a Dream / On My Own / A Little Fall of Rain – Fantine gets one, brief, shining moment before she dies (it's a weeper), and Eponine stands in for every alto who dreams of being the soprano – and then she dies, too. Why do most of the women in Les Mis end up dead? Turning, Turning – "What's the use of praying if there's nobody who hears it?" In a musical where women are mostly prostitutes or virgins, the women's chorus gives voice to one of the show's darkest and most provocative theological questions. Bring Him Home / Do You Hear the People Sing? – What does an evangelized life look like on the ground – and what does “somewhere beyond the barricade” really mean? _________________________________________ You'll hear Colm Wilkinson, Phillip Quast, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn from the 1995 “Dream Cast Recording.” You'll also hear Anne Hathaway sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the 2012 film soundtrack because she won an Oscar for it, and attention must be paid. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! Sign up for our email list to get updates when new episodes are released, info about upcoming special events, and more. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Rader's reimagined version features five actresses sharing the title role – each woman representing a different cultural ideal of Mary. Michael is passionate about and committed to finding ways of utilizing the arts as a tool to empower the lives of those less fortunate, especially children in need. THE FANTASTICKS COMPOSER: Harvey Schmidt LYRICIST: Tom Jones BOOK: Tom Jones SOURCE: Edmond Rostand's play Les Romanesques (1894) DIRECTOR: Word Baker PRINCIPLE CAST: Rita Gardner (Luisa), Kenneth Nelson (Matt), Jerry Orbach (El Gallo) OPENING DATE: May 3, 1960 CLOSING DATE: January 13, 2002 PERFORMANCES: 17,162 SYNOPSIS: Matt and Luisa are two star struck lovers separated by a wall their feuding fathers erected. They escape the confines of their homes and struggle to form a relationship based on trust and understanding.   David Arthur examines the socio-political climate which allowed the intimate, off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks to become the longest-running show in American history. Abandoning a desire to adapt Les Romanesques as a cowboy-infused musical hoedown, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt delivered producer Lore Noto a lyrical folktale that took Greenwich Village by storm and was lauded by notable celebrities, if greeted stoically by major critics. The small cast musical with experimental subject matter paved the way for more commercially successful musicals to incubate in off-Broadway theatres, such as Little Shop of Horrors, Nunsense, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. As a long-standing member of the Lehman Engel BMI workshop, he is the recipient of the Jerry Harrington Award. In addition to writing the book and lyrics for the NYMF award winning, ABOUT FACE with music by Jeffrey Lodin, David along with Brian Lasser, contributed material to the MAC award winning revue, HERE'S TO OUR FRIENDS. For the concert stage he has written for Randy Graff, Judy Kuhn, Karen Mason, Marin Mazzie, Donna Murphy, and Barbara Walsh. Along with the music, lyrics and book for SARATOGA TRUNK SONGS, current projects include the book and lyrics for NOBODY SLEEPS WELL IN CASABLANCA with music by Douglas J. Cohen, and the book and lyrics for ODDLY ENOUGH with music by Mary Feinsinger, along with a new piece, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL with book, music and lyrics by David Arthur.   SOURCES The Fantasticks, Original Cast Recording, MGM (1960) The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, published by Applause Libretto Library (2000) The Fantasticks starring John Davison and Susan Watson, directed by George Schaefer, NBC (1964) The Fantasticks starring Jean Louisa Kelly and Joey MacIntyre, directed by Michael Ritchie, United Artists (2000) Try To Remember: The Fantasticks starring Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, directed by Eli Kabillio, Zeitgeist Films (2003) The Amazing Story of The Fantasticks: America's Longest Running Play by Donald C Farber and Robert Viagas, published by Citadel Press (1991) Learn more about your ad choices. After playing for eight years (ages 5-13), he decided to forgo the concert pianist route and try something new. He found his artistic outlet through art classes and musical theater. After playing “Oliver” in Oliver! and “Curly” in Oklahoma! in 7th and 8th grade respectively, he auditioned for a role in the local community theater–Peninsula Center Stage's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Even though the show had been fully cast by the time of his audition, the creative team decided to foster his young talent and create a role of a “13th apostle” or “apostle wanna-be” just so he could be in the show. One night after a high-school performance of Evita, a representative from the SF Opera who happened to see the show invited Adam to audition for the new upcoming documentary opera based on the life of Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay city council member who was assassinated along with the mayor of SF in 1978. As a result of this invited audition, he was cast as “Young Harvey.” Adam's big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables. This job led to him being cast in the Broadway revival and his subsequent Broadway debut. Within the short 14 months that the show played the Broadhurst Theater, he had the benefit of working with many Broadway veterans including Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Gary Beach, Daphne-Rubin Vega, Norm Lewis, Ann Harada, Aaron Lazar (seen in photo), among many others. Since Les Miserables, he has journeyed from the islands of Mamma Mia! to the African pridelands of The Lion King. He's gone from the tropics of Once On This Island to the Arabian deserts of Aladdin. His mixed ethnicity has allowed him to play varied roles, and he thanks his parents for their whole-hearted encouragement to pursue a life in the arts. Adam, his wife Kelly, and their sons Jack and Alex now make their home in Chicago. After touring for two years with the first national tour of Disney's Mary Poppins as a dance captain and swing, Kelly happily joined the Broadway company and stayed with it until its closing in 2013. Paul, Jill, and Julie travel back in time to the height of the Cold War with 1988's Chess! This first foray into musical theatre is brought to us by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and Mamma Mia! fame. Bringing the show to life are Judy Kuhn and David Carroll with direction by Trevor Nunn. It's power suits. It's brick-sized cell phones. It's Russia vs. America. It's a game played by old dudes in the park taken to dramatic new heights. Paul and Jill accost Julie with important questions, such as: where are all the women at? Can I move my rook to Queen's 3? Is that even a thing? Why doesn't this musical add more to its run time and teach us how to play chess?Twitter: @monkeyplaybillsInstagram: @monkeysandplaybillspodEmail: monkeysandplaybillspod@gmail.comPatreon: patreon.com/monkeysandplaybills Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/monkeysandplaybills

With the help of his high-school mentor, Peter Devine, Adam discovered his love for the theater and made his decision to pursue a career in the arts.  It was also during this time that he attended the summer programs of the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in downtown SF and the California Institute of the Arts (CSSSA) in Valencia, CA.One night after a high-school performance of Evita, a representative from the SF Opera who happened to see the show invited Adam to audition for the new upcoming documentary opera based on the life of Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay city council member who was assassinated along with the mayor of SF in 1978.  As a result of this invited audition, he was cast as “Young Harvey” and participated not only in a powerful show performed on the anniversary of Milk's assassination, but also in a re-enactment of the historic candlelit march down Market Street just prior to the show.At New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Adam studied with the Collaborative Arts Project Musical Theater program (CAP21) as well as the Stonestreet Film and Television Studios program.  After graduating with a BFA in Theater, he worked the regional theaters, performed on cruise ships, and toured the country as Cinderella's Prince before landing his first Equity (Actor's Union) production as Nanki-poo in Marriott Theater's Hot Mikado.Around this time, he met his future wife while doing a Christmas show in Hershey, PA.  She was a rag-doll/ballerina and he was a well-padded, white-bearded Santa Claus (with black eyebrows).  While being paired as waltz partners might have helped the relationship blossom, it's possible the chocolate may have had something to do with it…Adam Jacobs and Aaron LazarAdam's big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables.  This job led to him being cast in the Broadway revival and his subsequent Broadway debut.  Within the short 14 months that the show played the Broadhurst Theater, he had the benefit of working with many Broadway veterans including Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Gary Beach, Daphne-Rubin Vega, Norm Lewis, Ann Harada, Aaron Lazar (seen in photo), among many others.Since Les Miserables, he has journeyed from the islands of Mamma Mia! to the African pridelands of The Lion King.  He's gone from the tropics of Once On This Island to the Arabian deserts of Aladdin. [Cosette thinks] How strange This feeling that my life's begun at last.-This change,-Can people really fall in love so fast?-What's the matter with you, Cosette?-Have you been too much on your own?-So many things unclear,-So many things unknown.-in my life-There are so many questions and answers-That somehow seem wrong-In my life-There are times when I catch in the silence-The sigh of a faraway song-And it sings-Of a world that I long to see-Out of reach,-Just a whisper away-Waiting for me Does he know I'm alive? Do I know if he's real? Did he see what I saw Does he feel what I feel? In my life I'm no longer alone Now that love in my life is so near Find me now, find me here. [Marius:] In my life she has burst like the music of angels-he light of the sun-And my life seems to stop-As if something is over-And something has scarcely begun-Eponine, you're the friend who has brought me here-Thanks to you I am one with the gods-And Heaven is near-And I soar through world that is new that is free! [Eponine:] Every word that he says is a dagger in me!-In my life-There's been no one like him anywhere-Anywhere, where he is...-If he asked... I'd be his [Marius & Eponine:] In my life-There is someone who touches my life [Marius:] Waiting near - [Eponine:] -Waiting here Marius:] A heart full of love-A heart full of song-I'm doing everything all wrong-Oh god, for shame-I do not even know your name-Dear Mad'moiselle-Won't you say?-Will you tell? [Cosette:] -A heart full of love-No fear, no regret -[Marius:] My name is Marius Pontmercy [Cosette:] And mine's Cosette [Marius:] Cosette, I don't know what to say! [Cosette:] Then make no sound! [Marius:] I am lost [Cosette:] I am found [Marius:] A heart full of light [Cosette:] A night bright as day [Marius:] And you must never go away -Cosette, Cosette! [Cosette:] This is a chain we'll never break [Marius:] Do I dream? [Cosette:] I'm awake [Marius:] A heart full of love [Eponine:] He was never mine to lose [Marius and Cosette:] A heart full of you [Eponine:] Why regret what could not be? [Marius:] A single look and then I knew [Eponine:] These are words he'll never say-Not to me-Not to me-Not for me [Cosette:] I knew it too [Marius:] From today [Cosette:] Every day [Cosette & Marius (Eponine):] And it isn't a dream (his heart full of love)- Not a dream (he will never) -After all! Music promoted by NCM https://goo.gl/fh3rEJ● “Feature Film” – Enchanted (2007)○ This movie is an insane amount of nods to other movies to there is a ton of trivia I will need to limit myself.○ According to director Kevin Lima, "thousands" of references are made to past and future works of Disney in Enchanted (2007), which serve as both a parody of and a "giant love letter to Disney classics". As Lima worked with Bill Kelly, the writer, to inject Disney references to the plot, it became "an obsession"; he derived the name of every character as well as anything that needed a name from past Disney films to bring in more Disney references.○ The animated scenes were not actually done by the Disney Animation wing. It was done by James Baxter Animation, the studio responsible for Curious George ○ The first feature-length Disney live-action/traditional animation hybrid since Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).○ One of the elderly male dancers appeared in Mary Poppins (1964) as a chimney sweep.○ When Prince Edward is knocking on apartment doors in search of Giselle, the very first door is opened by Judy Kuhn, the singing voice of the title character of Pocahontas (1995).○ While Giselle is looking in the fish tank "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid (1989) is playing as background music. In the same scene, Jodi Benson plays the secretary - she also played the lead as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (1989).○ When Prince Edward is flipping through TV channels in the hotel room, the soap opera he watches features Paige O'Hara, the voice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast (1991)○ At the beginning, Giselle is creating a mannequin of her 'true love'. The outfit it is wearing is never worn by the prince - but it is worn by Robert at the ball, near the end of the film.○ As we see Giselle progress into a modern woman, so does her wardrobe. She begins in the over-the-top wedding gown, then to the very princessy long gown, then to a very girly but short dress, and finally, into a modern evening gown. In the same way, Robert's wardrobe regresses from suit and tie to more casual clothing, and ending in a very prince-like outfit at the ball.○ At the end of Robert and Giselle's dance, when Nancy cuts in, the camera angle makes it look as though she is wearing a crown. This foreshadows that she will become the future ruler of Andalasia when she returns there and marries Edward.○ Thoughts on the film?● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ TOM HOLLAND IS BACK!!!○ Daveed Diggs in talks to be Sebastian in Little Mermaid Remake?● Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”○ We have gone a full year I realize we may need to change up what we do so I'm going to ask Deanna and Cori some trivia questions and pit them against each other to see who will be this week’s top disney fan.● Segment: Top 4 Ranking “Let’s get down to business” ○ Top 4 Disney Princes○ 1. Her dream takes a slight detour when she meets Prince Naveen, who has been turned into an amphibian by evil Dr. Facilier. Mistaking her for a princess and hoping to break the spell, Naveen plants a kiss on poor Tiana -- thereby turning her into a frog as well. The pair hop along on an adventure through the bayous to seek the help of a powerful voodoo priestess.○ Trivia○ The first Disney movie to feature an African-American princess.○ This is Disney's first 2-D film in which all of the voice actors do both the speaking and singing parts since, Beauty and the Beast (1991).○ The animation style was influenced primarily by Lady and the Tramp (1955), for the city scenes, and Bambi (1942), for the bayou scenes. Those films were, in the directors' opinion, "the peak of animation in the classic Disney animation style."○ This was supposed to spearhead a return to hand-drawn animation but subsequent research after the film's disappointing box office run indicated that audiences thought it was old-fashioned.○ First Disney film since The Lion King (1994) to have more than one song be nominated for Best Original song at the Academy Awards. ( It Lost Best Animated Picture to UP)○ For much of the film, Naveen calls Tiana "Princess" and later "Waitress", symbolizing his objectification of women as a whole. He doesn't call her by her real name until after the song 'Ma Belle Evangeline', when he starts to fall in love with her.○ The last line of Dr. Facilier's Friends On the Other Side song is "You got what you wanted but you lost what you had", which is in direct contrast to Mama Odie's song about finding who you are and learning what you need; accentuating the evil side vs good side of voodoo. It means you may have gotten what you wanted but you lost what you already had that you needed.● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ There will be a new party, Oogie Boogie Bash, debuting in Disney California Adventure Park come September. It’s like Micky’s Halloween Party but with some major upgrades, especially in the villain department. Discuss on Reddit ➤ Support the Show ➤ This week Jimi and Tommy go on a trip with Sondheim to Italy and explore the life and love of Fosca and Giorgio in his ‘Passion.’ They ponder over why the show was a critical success but not as popular with audiences, laud the importance of orchestrators on Broadway and make conjecture on Sondheim’s meta-musical. Passion (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES Did you know Donna Murphy also had a star turn as the Witch in Into the Woods? Watch Tommy proclaim his love for her in his Miscast Witches video! If Sondheim is God then does that mean Finishing The… and Look I Made A… are the Old and New Testaments? Either way, gettem! If you don’t know who Maria Friedman is then the perfect place to start is this this performance of ‘How Many Tears’ from Martin Guerre from ‘Hey, Mr Producer!’ We’re extremely grateful that Sondheim is an advocate for filmed staged versions of his show. Why not treat yourself and have a listen to the creator’s commentary on ‘Passion’? Here’s a fascinating interview with Sondheim around the time of the release of ‘Passion’ on Broadway. If you’ve never dipped into the ‘Show People with Paul Wontorek’ Broadway.com segments, you really should! No better place to start than with Judy Kuhn getting passionate. Hear the man himself talking about the importance of orchestrators, particularly Jonathan Tunick! If you don’t want to take our word for it, just look at Jonathan Tunick’s repertoire. We owe him so much! A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED QUIZ QUESTION This show has seen substantial rewrites for it’s licensable school version including the entire re-writing of one of its songs. The creators have said they actually like the new song better than the original and may just include it in all future versions. What show?
