In this final minisode of the season (Don't worry; there's still one more full episode on the way!), Stacy returns from Japan with tales of train travel, city-hopping, and family time. Each region had its own personality, and seeing the country through her son's eyes made the trip even more memorable. Meanwhile, Daniel's been deep in renovation mode, helping another friend prepare a nursery. The room's first iteration was a hands-on learning experience, complete with a slightly crooked level and a few design choices that didn't turn out quite as planned. Now it's time to undo, redo, and simplify, and let's just say Daniel's tolerance for anything finicky is… limited. He prefers tools that work straight out of the box, not ones that need calibration and coaxing. He and Stacy also compare notes on gardening—what's working, what's not, and why the weeds always seem one step ahead. Plus, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who tuned in this season. We appreciate your questions, comments, and continued support. The Life Time Grand Prix is back, which means we've got a whole new season of recap episodes on the way. To kick things off, we've got South African rider Hayley Preen and Swiss rider Simon Pellaud here to take us inside their races. Hayley just won the South African Gravel Nationals shortly after grabbing third place at the Cape Epic and is on her second go-round of the Grand Prix. Last year, she had to drop out after a broken wrist, but she's started off this season strong with a fourth-place finish at round one last weekend. Simon is a Grand Prix newcomer but he's been pretty busy over the past few years. He gives us a quick rundown of his career so far, which includes racing in the WorldTour for Trek, racing for a US Conti team, and breaking his WorldTour contract in order to join the Swiss ProTeam Tudor Pro. Now, he's racing for the Chinese Conti team Li-Ning Star on the road while holding down a gravel career on the side. He talks about his days lining up for the Vuelta and the Giro, using his breakaway skills at Sea Otter, and how he's planning to balance his globetrotting schedule this year. Instagram: @withpacepodYouTube: Payson McElveen

Alexis walks us through her fascinating career designing some of Los Angeles' most iconic dining rooms, from Michelin star establishments to beloved hot chicken powerhouse Howlin' Ray's.  More than that, though, Alexis discusses all that goes into the design process. And, sure, there's talk of logistics and timelines, but there's also reflections on getting to the heart of what a restaurant is trying to convey and how you bring a feeling or a vibe to life in a physical space. We talk about design trends over the years, which design trends Los Angeles is recognized for around the world, and what the heck an architect does when a client won't stop asking for a punny neon sign. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelafoodpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelafoodpodcast/support

When Preachers Preen

The calling to be a Preacher is one guaranteed to have many struggles. But one of the most common is the temptation to elevate self. To focus on self. To draw more attention to your gifts and speaking abilities than to Christ. In today's episode, Mike attempts to lovingly but firmly rebuke this thought and attitude so many preachers struggle with in today's era; where it is easier than every to amass a following in your own name, instead of Christs.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 8, 2023 is: preen • PREEN • verb To preen is to make one's appearance neat and tidy or to behave or speak with obvious pride or self-satisfaction. In ornithology, preen means "to groom with the bill." // She stood preening herself in front of the mirror. // The award-winners were preening backstage. See the entry > Examples: "One day, I crossed the Nakdong River on foot, over a bridge connecting the neighborhood of Hadan to Eulsuk Island. That area, where the river meets the ocean, had been the site of the Nakdong Bulge, part of a monthlong battle in 1950. It is now an estuary for migrating birds, and I thrilled at seeing a great egret preen on a glittering field of water." — E. Tammy Kim, The New Yorker, 6 Jan. 2023 Did you know? Preen hatched in 14th-century Middle English, and early on it displayed various spelling forms, including prenen, prayne, prene, and preyne. The word traces to the Anglo-French puroindre, or proindre, linking pur-, meaning "thoroughly," with uindre, oindre, meaning "to anoint or rub." One of the first writers known to apply preen to the human act of primping was Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales: "He preens himself and prunes and combs his curls / To take the fancy of this queen of girls." Centuries later (sometime during the late 19th century), the prideful meaning of preen took flight, joining bird-related verbs plume, which was being used with the meaning "to pride or congratulate (oneself)," and peacock, a word still used today to mean "to show off."

Up until now, the coolest thing that has ever happened on The Resilient Journey podcast is my smooth jazz opening. That's about to change as I'm joined by one smooth cat. Jim Preen is my guest today. Hello everyone, welcome to episode 60 - as the Resilience Think Tank presents the Resilient Journey podcast! Today I'm joined by independent crisis communications consultant and former ABC news reporter Jim Preen. Listen as Jim and I talk about the current state of affairs in the UK (is the world really laughing at London?), poor communications from leaders, how to be effective when running crisis management exercises, the value of playbooks vs. plans and best practices when hosting a webinar or large online meeting. Jim shares some details of his battle with prostate cancer and whatever you do, stick around to the end for a special treat. Be sure to follow The Resilient Journey!  We sure do appreciate it! EL-ON organizes the Big Bicycle Beach Bash to reward everyone for toning their calves while cleaning up the beach on their bikes. Sav and Preen re-engage in their fight. Preen is cross with Sav for not seeing the damage EL-ON is doing, while Sav is cross with Preen for not seeing positive change when it hits him on a bicycle. They storm off and leave the phone with EL-ON and JEF who fight over it to communicate with the Pastlings. The Rez is a production of Rezilience LTD, in partnership with Gen-Z Media and PRX. Preen is dropping places fast on the Cheive 2.0 leaderboard as Chieve-inflation is totally out of control. EL-ON encourages Preen to try picking up litter—on a bicycle for massive extra points—which ends hilariously badly. Preen just doesn't buy the whole new Chieve system—20,000 Cheives for recycling 3 bottles just doesn't seem right. Sav thinks he's just being selfish and a sore loser and they have a huge falling out. Preen tries to find some comfort in talking with JEF and JEF tries to take advantage of the situation to get Preen to reboot it to full power. Meanwhile, Sav tries to make sure EL-ON really is acting in everyone's best interest, which ends in an awkward laughing fit. With a grumpy, weakened and defeated JEF in tow, Preen and Sav return to the City expecting a hero's welcome for their mighty deeds of saving humanity from being imported into GabFace and taking down JEF…. Instead, they're greeted with boos for having pulled the plug on JEF's “Chieve” system, the reward scheme JEF used to keep people distracted and competing with pointless tasks. It turns out lots of people liked Chieves and were really cross at having their life's work deleted! Preen knows how they feel, but Sav thinks they're all just being silly. Our heroes fight. Preen wonders if Chieves were all bad, mopes about his lost status, and accuses Sav of being arrogant; Sav goes off in a huff to the cave where she busies herself with Gran's old tech. What is she up to?With some input from a surly JEF, Preen tries to come up with a replacement for the Chieve system called “Stickoes”, which he takes great pride in modeling. EL-ON, a bold and brash new A.I. appears from nowhere with a new slogan (“Conceive it! Believe it! Chieve it!”) and a new Cheive system to give people a new purpose in life… and it also seems to be good for the planet and everyone's physical well-being. What could go wrong with that? The Rez is a production of Rezilience LTD, in partnership with Gen-Z Media and PRX.
