The True Tales From Old Houses podcast is an absolute gem for anyone interested in historic homes and restoration. Hosted by Stacy Grinsfelder, this podcast takes technical topics and stories about old houses and brings them to life in an educational and entertaining way. The hosts are incredibly sweet and personable, making you feel like you're sitting down with friends as you listen to each episode. I have been listening to this podcast for a few years now and it has become one of my favorites.

One of the best aspects of The True Tales From Old Houses podcast is the wealth of knowledge that it provides. Stacy pulls from a variety of great resources, making the information on this podcast well-researched and trustworthy. Whether you're a seasoned homeowner or a newbie like me, there is so much to learn from each episode. The addition of Daniel as a co-host has been fantastic, adding another layer of expertise and perspective to the show. In this episode of True Tales From Old Houses, Stacy and Daniel answer a listener's question about original basement windows—save them or start fresh? They weigh the pros and cons of restoration versus replacement, and why there's often wiggle room instead of a clear-cut answer. Then, the tables turn as Daniel puts Stacy, and special guest Scott Sidler, in the hot seat to talk about their new book, The Case for Historic Windows: The Truth About Energy Efficiency and Old Windows. While they share a few behind-the-scenes stories from the long-distance co-writing process, the real heart of the conversation lies in the book's core message: keeping old windows isn't just a sentimental choice. It's a smart, sustainable one. Together, they unpack common myths about window performance, dive into the rarely explored (or understood!) concept of embodied carbon, and explain why understanding your actual utility usage matters more than chasing flashy energy claims. Backed by hard data and surprising research findings, the book demonstrates that old windows have the potential to meet or even exceed the energy efficiency of many modern replacements, sometimes without a full restoration. From simple upgrades to complete rehabs, the book offers a range of practical solutions designed to help homeowners and pros make informed, ethical, and budget-conscious decisions that prioritize preservation and performance. This week's episode begins with some quick updates about Daniel's cottage and an announcement from Stacy. Stacy and Scott Sidler are co-authoring a book about energy efficiency and old windows. With the first draft nearly finished, the book is moving right along. Stacy and Scott hope it will become a handy and trusted resource for anyone with a stake in preserving and restoring old buildings. Next, during listener Q&A, Daniel and Stacy offer input on a kitchen window issue. The homeowner is planning a remodel and wants to place the sink in front of an original window. The problem is that the window is large and cannot fit behind the sink without being shortened or removed. Daniel weighs in with some pragmatic advice, and Stacy agrees.  Finally, Stacy chats with Lee McColgan, author of A House Restored: The Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial. Part memoir, part meditation, Lee's book offers an inspiring snapshot of falling in love with his 1700s home and learning the historic trades necessary to bring it back to life.   Mentioned in this Episode: Sign up for the Wood Window Workshop Weekend Retreat at Silver Lake: July 19-21 or July 26-28, 2024. First, Stacy opens up about her connection to Japan and how seeing Mount Fuji nearly brought her to tears.  After a funny interlude about Japanese snacks, Stacy brings it back to old houses by describing a visit to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. The Edo-Tokyo was established in 1993 to relocate, reconstruct, preserve, and exhibit historical buildings of great cultural value under demolition order in their original locations. Over 30 historic homes and buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods have been moved and reconstructed on the property of this unique museum.  Finally, huge news: Daniel's Bluestone Cottage is finished, and the listing goes live the first week of June! Daniel discusses his method of staging the cottage, which naturally goes against the conventional wisdom of "Keep it neutral." How much is too much when it comes to furnishings and soft goods?
