Welcome to Media in the Mix, the only podcast produced and hosted by the School of Communication at American University. Join us as we create a safe space to explore topics and communication at the intersection of social justice, tech, innovation & pop culture. Today, we look back at guests Pallavi Kumar and Isis Amusa!  On this episode of Media in the Mix, we look back at everything SOC3. SOC3 Provides opportunities to students for hands-on learning while also giving them course credit and compensation. In other words, it's true real-life work experience in the communications world!  ⁠Pallavi Damani Kumar⁠ is a full-time professor in American University's School of Communication and the former Division Director for the Public Communication division. Prior to teaching full time, Kumar gained more than 20 years experience in the public relations industry having worked as a vice president in FleishmanHillard's social marketing practice in Washington, DC, a vice president/account supervisor in Ketchum's healthcare practice in New York as well as associate director of international public relations at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Philadelphia. She began her career in environmental communication at Ruder-Finn in Washington, DC. Kumar co-authored the ninth edition of Public Relations Case Studies published by Cengage. Her articles and commentary have appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today and PRWeek. In 2015, she received the Outstanding Service to the University Community from American University. PRWeek named her to the 2017 Global Power Book - a list of the world's most influential PR professionals. She was most recently profiled in a chapter of the book Diverse Voices: Profiles in Leadership published by the PRSA Foundation and Museum of PR. She graduated magna cum laude from American University with a degree in public affairs and public communication. She received her master's degree in public relations/corporate communications from Georgetown University. ⁠Isis Amusa⁠ is (an SOC Alumna now!) who double-majored in journalism and justice & law. She is a queer Black social justice storyteller working in communications and was the Creative Strategist at SOC3. As a journalist, she has worked to uplift the stories of social justice activists as they ameliorate the threats upon undocumented immigrants' educational attainment and DACA, failing educational supports for incarcerated women, Black professorial exodus and performative antiracism in private white higher education, and most recently, food insecurity among college-aged youth. In her current roles, she communicates on behalf of Black farmers and food justice organizers, organizes for Black food sovereignty and Black land stewardship, and cultivates SOC3's digital face to promote its history, aims, and client projects. Natan Edelsburg is the Chief Partnerships Officer at Muck Rack, the software platform that enables thousands of organizations including Google, International Rescue Committee, Golin and Duolingo to find the right journalists to pitch, report on media coverage and prove the value of their work. In this role, Natan is responsible for leading and cultivating strategic industry partnerships and driving international expansion. Previously, Natan was Chief Revenue Officer at Muck Rack, where he led the Sales and Customer Success teams. He joined Muck Rack in 2009 as the company's first employee and held several positions including Chief Operating Officer, helping to build the business to what it is today. Natan is a member of the Board of Trustees for the PRSA Foundation. He is a frequent speaker on social media, PR, journalism and the future of TV. Through her research and advocacy for her students, she is a long- time proponent of fostering diversity within the PR profession. Lynn joined the City College of New York faculty in 1993 as professor in the Advertising and Public Relations in the Department of Media & Communication Arts.  As Ad/PR program director (2001-2016), she built a highly competitive program with 200 majors. She created significant scholarship opportunities for talented students, in addition to building strong relationships with leading agencies for student internships and entry-level hires. She is a founding faculty member of CCNY's master's degree program in Branding and Integrated Communications (BIC), which launched in 2013. Lynn organized CCNY's first PRSSA chapter in 1996 and served as faculty advisor for 20 years. In 2008, she received The City College Alumni Association's Faculty Service Award and CCNY honored her in 2014 by creating a scholarship in her name. Lynn retired from CCNY in January 2021. She continues to mentor students and young professionals independently, and through the CO OP Apprentice Program. A strong advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in PR, Lynn co-authored a national study in 2014 (with Dr. Frank Walton) on the experiences of young black and Hispanic PR professionals in the workplace, funded by a PRSA Foundation grant.  The study updates her 2004 research (with Dr. Rochelle Ford) on diversity in the PR profession. She has written about mentoring and crisis communications for PRSA's Strategist and Tactics and is co-author of a textbook chapter on global corporate reputation.  Prior to coming to City College, Lynn was Press Manager for NBC News Today show, Director of Public Affairs for The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Marketing Director of Merkin Concert Hall. Other clients have included MSNBC, The New York Public Library, Lighthouse International, New York Road Runners Club and Hudson Guild Settlement House. During his Sears career, Ron managed internal and external communications, marketing public relations support, state and federal government affairs, community relations and the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. Earlier in his corporate career, he held senior communications positions at Sara Lee Corporation, Pitney Bowes and Eli Lilly. Following graduation from Indiana State, Ron began his career as a reporter for The Columbus (Ind.) Republic before moving to the New York State Assembly where he served as director of member services (the public relations support unit) under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Ron is active in several civic organizations including the Economic Club of Chicago where he is a former board member and past vice chair. Culp serves on the board of Gilda's Club Chicago, Public Relations Museum and Library, PRSA Foundation, Indiana State Foundation and the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, which he also chaired for five years. He was listed in Crain's "Who in Chicago Business" from 2009 to 2017. Culp is the only individual to receive both the Distinguished Service Award and the Hall of Fame Award from the Arthur W. Page Society, which is comprised of senior communication professionals, agency heads and leading academics. In 2011 he was honored with the John W. Hill Award by the New York Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and a year later he received the PR Professional of the Year from the Chicago chapter of PRSA. He also is featured in the PRSSA book, “Legacies from Legends in Public Relations” (2007) and was named to the PR News Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2012, Ron received the David Ferguson Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Relations Education by a Practitioner, and in 2017 he received PRSA's Gold Anvil, the organization's lifetime achievement award. Ron and his DePaul colleague Matt Ragas are co-authors of a business basics book for PR professionals entitled “Business Essentials for Strategic Communicators” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and they jointly edited "Mastering Business for Strategic Communicators" (Emerald, 2018). Also in 2018, Ron compiled and edited an eBook entitled, "The New Rules of Crisis Management." Spector co-founded the firm in 1991. Within the first year of operation the firm was awarded the Gold Creativity in Public Relations Award for client Embassy Suites.  Since then, the firm has won more than 50 national awards for a variety of Fortune 100 companies. In June 2018, she was presented with the Phil Dorf award for leadership and mentorship at the PRSA New York Big Apple Awards.
