Disability Series, Episode #1 of 4. How and when scientists, doctors, and society started conceiving of the physical and emotional components of same-sex desire as a psychiatric condition of the mind? This was neither an ancient belief nor a postmodern (aka, post-1950) one, and it wasn't an exclusively American phenomenon either. Rather, the classification of same-sex desire as a “disorder” had its roots in the foundations of psychiatry as a profession in the 19th century. Over the last 100+ years, that classification impacted individuals all across the world. You've heard of Sigmund Freud, whose work in the 1920s standardized a form of talk therapy that sought to interpret actions, thoughts, and desires through a particular lens of analysis. “Psychoanalysis,” though short-lived as a psychiatric practice, was certainly part of the longer-term framing of queerness and transness as “mental illness.” But Freud is just the tip of the iceberg. Today we're digging into the history and relationship between psychiatry and sexuality; the scientific theories of sexuality that helped shape modern ideas about the relations between gender, genitals, desire, and identity; and the consequences of the medicalization of sexuality. Sexual difficulties are common, and they can be highly distressing. They don't have to mean the end of your sex life, though. Fortunately, most difficulties can be resolved and you can get back to having satisfying sex. However, people often don't know where to begin when it comes to dealing with sexual difficulties, from telling a partner about it to finding a solution. So, let's talk about it! I am joined today by Dr. Natalie Rosen, an Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Neuroscience and Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Natalie is a sex and relationship therapist who has published over 125 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on sexual dysfunction. Some of the topics we explore in this episode include: How to start healthy and productive conversations about sexual difficulties with a partner. How to manage low sexual desire. How to deal effectively with sexual pain. How to reset your beliefs around sex in a way that can improve sexual function. How to prevent porn from becoming a problem in your relationship. How to better manage emotions in a relationship so that they don't interfere with sexual satisfaction or contribute to sexual difficulties. Check out Natalie's previous appearance on the show in Episode 88, where we discuss how to navigate sex during pregnancy and parenthood.

Scholars in gender and sexuality studies have largely ignored or dismissed attempts to explain the causes of sexual deviation for a variety of reasons. In this podcast, National Humanities Center Fellow Benjamin Kahan discusses how his work, exploring “the historical etiology of sexuality,” moves past those scholars’ dismissal of early sexuality theories in hopes of producing a fuller understanding of how contemporary attitudes and notions about sexuality developed. By considering lost models of sexuality and sexual aberration—dating back to the 1840s—Kahan describes the emergence of ideas that can be found in the work of researchers such as Havelock Ellis as well as in the writings of authors like Djuna Barnes and Virginia Woolf. Benjamin Kahan is an assistant professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies at Louisiana State University. He is the author of “Celibacies: American Modernism and Sexual Life” (2013) and the editor of Heinrich Kaan’s “‘Psychopathia Sexualis’ (1844): A Classic Text in the History of Sexuality” (2016). This year, as a Fellow at the Center, his project is “Sexual Etiologies and the Great Paradigm Shift.”
