Episode #327 // Bad news can be really tough to handle, especially when it's so unexpected that you didn't see it coming. At times like these, it's human nature to try to find an explanation for what happened, so that you can process it and find some meaning. This enables you to eventually move on. The first place you'll look for answers is in what we were told. When the boss delivered the bad news, how did she explain it? (because there's always an explanation, right?!)It's easy to latch onto what you've been told, especially when it's laced with positive messages. But the story is often constructed purely to provide you with a soft landing — and it may be a long way from the reality of the situation. How would you know if your boss's feedback is genuine, or if she's just lying to you to avoid an escalation of conflict? In this episode, I give you some techniques to help you read between the lines, so that you can be better at sorting out fact from fiction. ————————Join our FREE No Bullsh!t Leaders Hub on Skool. A wonderful job by Rusty Gatenby, not giving away his embargoed revue. Can you find it during this interview?
Les, Kurt, and Jason have gathered much like a bunch of leaves that have been raked into a pile against their will. But at least Kurt has Blac Chyna news that could follow a similar long-tail trajectory as past news stories about her making violent claims. Then, ready or not, the guys leave no leaf unturned as they dissect Hallmark's Falling Together. Kurt has a pretty wild and prescient theory about the male lead, and that triggers a companion theory about the female lead (and movie at large) that involves a lot of gay coding, a whole lot of pie, and a whole huge heaping pile of cocaine. But an increased coke budget just comes with the territory of a new job that isn't in Miami but that you have shown up for 6 weeks early. Open up your veiny eyes to watch this movie, unless you're getting Mama's Familied while you listen. Narcissists lie, a lot. And for the lies to work, they rely (pun?) on us "reading between the lines". While this is a good idea with healthy people, it is a terrible idea with liars. So instead, when someone says something weird, you can ask this question: what do you mean?

If you can hear between the lines and find out what that reason is, you can have deeper conversations with others that are enjoyable for both of you. • Doing this isn't especially hard; all you need to do is pay attention to what is being said. People organically bring up topics they are interested in, and their body language will very obviously indicate excitement or happiness while talking about that subject. With practice, you'll be able to spot these telltale signs better and use them to have more fun and engaging conversations. • When someone is telling you something, try to determine what emotion is being conveyed. People are generally looking for some specific emotional reaction from you when they say something. It could be anger, a smile, amazement, curiosity, or something else. If you can figure out what emotion they're trying to convey and what they're expecting in return, you'll make the other person feel understood and appreciated. Remember that conversations aren't all about you. It's an activity that involves mutual sharing and listening. Reacting to the other person's emotions appropriately shows that you're paying attention and actually care about what they're saying. This is why you should react to everything. don't ignore or let comments or nonverbal gestures just pass with no response.
