In this episode, Anthony Iracki sits down with Meg Harrington, who is an Aquatics Supervisor for the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. In this episode, you'll hear about the transition of Millennials who are becoming managers - those that are working with the younger generations, and those that are still being managed by Baby Boomers. That transition is really interesting, and we have a great responsibility to engage with, train, and support Generation Z, while still managing expectations and sometimes managing up to our own supervisors. I hope you'll join me in listening to the end of this great conversation. Meg Harrington grew up as a parks and rec kid, and has been a lifeguard since 2010. She worked as the Recreation Supervisor in Mexico, MO and is now the Aquatic Specialist for Columbia Missouri Parks and Recreation, where she manages 6 aquatic facilities, hires staff, and trains lifeguards as a Star Guard Elite instructor and runs the swim lesson programs. When you think about the future of parks and recreation, what do you see? Thinking past the pandemic, what outcomes can we look forward to? How can things shift for you and your agency? In case you need to hear it, you have permission to dream about the future of our field. You can choose to be optimistic and see the bright side. There are opportunities here for us to show up differently. The other piece of good news? You don't have to do it alone. You can do it with those in your community and on your team. Or heck, you can do it across the country.... and you can certainly do it today on the podcast. Two of my favorite takeaways from JJ during this episode: Our job is to create experiences for our community.. You can do this by having an entrepreneurs mindset and by building relationships with those in your community. Your ideas are great, but the strategies of the team are even greater. Think beyond yourself and put your ego aside to serve the greater good. J.J. Lillibridge is a Parks and Recreation professional that is skilled in program design and event leadership. He presents a high level of energy and an infectious attitude toward quality of life enhancement. J.J. is a Recreation Supervisor for Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department in Georgetown, Texas. J.J. is a Certified Parks and Recreation professional and is actively involved with TRAPS and NRPA. J.J.'s words of advice - "Don't forget to dream". A life hack is a clever tip or technique for accomplishing a familiar task more easily and efficiently. And, with so many park and recreation professionals having to wear multiple hats — sometimes in the course of a single day — anything that can efficiently simplify a task and save time is usually welcomed pretty warmly. On this episode of Open Space Radio, we’re looking back at one of the questions that we asked attendees at the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland: What is your park and recreation life hack? With everything from duct tape and zip ties, to quotes from Michael Jordan and love, you’re sure to find some inspiration when you hear the life hacks of these people who were brave enough to get on the mic with us: Elena Messenger, Therapeutic Recreation Programmer, Stafford County Parks and Recreation Gabby Anglin, Recreation Coordinator, Victoria Parks and Recreation Aaron Davis, Director, Mebane Recreation and Parks Kristy Lintz, Recreation Program Specialist, Rapid City Parks and Recreation Kasey Mahony, Cadillac District Supervisor, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Lisa Mansfield, Recreation Supervisor, City of Findlay Parks & Recreation Nicole Moore, Recreation Programmer II, Stafford County Parks and Recreation David Heath, Parks and Recreation Superintendent, Bullhead City Do you have your own park and recreation life hack that you’d like to share with us? Send us an email at openspaceradio@nrpa.org and we’ll send you some stickers! As a special bonus for listening to this episode, you can get a discount on NRPA Live — the virtual version of the NRPA Annual Conference. By using the coupon code OPENSPACE, you’ll get 15 percent off the 18 full education session options that are available now!

Today’s episode of Open Space Radio is a special one because it is officially our 50th episode! It was hard to imagine having 50 episodes when we launched two years ago, but we’re here and we’re thriving. Open Space Radio has consistently been in the Apple charts for non-profit podcasts, and often in the top ten! The timing of our 50th episode is pretty appropriate. We just got back from the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference in Baltimore, and it was amazing to meet so many of our listeners and chat with those of you who have never even heard of the show. We were thrilled to get some of you on the mic, and we’re looking forward to sharing the great answers to six questions we asked people who stopped by the Open Space Radio booth. So, thank you to everyone who visited us and thank you for listening — whether this is your 50th episode or your first — we really appreciate you tuning in. And since it’s our 50th episode and we’ve been reflecting on when we first started, we thought it would be appropriate to use this episode to explore one of the questions we asked while we were in Baltimore: What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Tune in to the show below to hear the sage advice from the following people who were brave enough to get on the mic with us: Stacie Anaya, Director, City of Lewisville Parks and Recreation Department Anthony Iracki, MS, CPRP, Recreation Supervisor, Whitefish Bay Recreation Brissa Ibarra, California State University, East Bay Beeg Johnson, Recreation Director, City of Eagle Parks, Pathways & Recreation Tony Phillips, Director, City of South Fulton Parks and Recreation Donna Lindenmeier, Associate Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Oklahoma State University Gabriel Passos, Aquatics Recreation Programmer II, Stafford County Parks and Recreation Jenny Cox, Conservation Program Manager, NRPA Tom Ellis, CPRP, Parks Superintendent, Oro Valley Parks and Recreation And of course, we couldn’t have a 50th episode celebration without sharing some of our own advice that we would tell our younger selves, like making sure to make yourself proud first and the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone. To finish out our celebration, we have officially launched an Instagram just for the podcast. So be sure to follow us @openspaceradio and say hi, tell us your ideas for future episodes and tag us in photos of you listening to the podcast! You can also send feedback or episode ideas to openspace@nrpa.org, and we’ll send you an Open Space Radio sticker! Again, a huge thank you to everyone who sat down with us at the 2019 NRPA Annual Conference and thank you to everyone who has listened and helped us get to 50 episodes. We could not have done it without all our amazing past guests, listeners and colleagues at NRPA who support Open Space Radio!

Why Free Play at Day Camp Makes SenseOne of the challenges of a typical day at day camp is trying to pack every single moment with magic and fun. The consequence of that is that they whole day can become very regimented and schedule driven. Now, please put your hands down. Yes schedules are good. Yes you need to know generally what happens when. We aren't going to ask you to get rid of your schedules in favour of free and unstructured play. However, take a second to consider this. When we turn over the responsibility of the fun-creation to the campers, we get to truly engage their creativity and help them work out the part of their brain that they desperately need for the future. If we regiment every single moment, we don't allow for a the moments of magic that you, as an old (okay, more experienced…) camp professional could have NEVER thought of!To help us give some concrete ideas, to a jello-like topic, Andy, Ehren, Michael Brandwein (again!) are joined by Dr. Kelly Jones, co-founder of Outpost Summer Camps. Outpost Summer Camp is focused on relationship building around unstructured play and they make free play work well with 150+ kids. WOW.Tune in to this episode to find out about:Why do Free Play? Why do kids need it?What are some of the unfounded fears that people think about when it comes to free play? What kind behaviours do you want your staff to show to get the most out of unstructured play? What are some different ways that camps implement free and unstructured play? How can you begin to implement free and unstructured play THIS SUMMER?How are you going to bring in some free play to your program this summer? It would be easy for the hard and fast overnight camp pros to see “Day Camp” in the title and move on.Don’t do that. There are logistical differences with both models of summer camp, but it’s so easy to see that what is relevant and pertinent to one, is the same for the other.Rituals, traditions, culture, integration, camaraderie, it’s a part of every camp experience, no matter when, or how often the campers go home. What is good for overnight, is good for day.All that being said, kids going home every night, camp vs school syndrome, wavering attendance, rented sites, lunch time, and many more things all pose a significant and unique challenge, that needs to be addressed and collaborated on.And we’re good at challenges. This episode of the CampHacker podcast brings together some camp pros that have truly hacked the day-camp experience and bring the extraordinary world into the 9-5, every day. The Communication THESE Parents NeedNo matter what type of camp you are, you want to move forward. Especially if it means providing an even better customer service experience for our parents, we need to always be re-evaluating even our most habitual practices.Communication with our parents during the summer is definitely one of those things. As the boomers and the gen-xers are moving away from our core parent age, our millennial parents have different communication preferences that we should consider before simply saying “nope, we only call”.One size definitely doesn't fit all and especially when you consider WHO is making those calls/emails/texts and WHY you are making those calls/emails/texts, and WHEN you are making those calls/emails/texts, you have to do it strategically.Sharing their way through this changing landscape is the brilliant Matt Kaufman from Camp Ramaquois. Matt joins Andy and Sam to share their techniques, best practices and strategies for in-summer communication. Thanks for joining us, Matt! What do you think?
