Bike riding is a great way to get around and get some exercise—if you do it carefully. There has been a sharp increase in bike- and e-bike-related injuries and deaths in older riders. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults over the age of 55 have the highest incidence of bicycle-related deaths. In this episode of San Diego Health, host Susan Taylor discusses bicycle safety with Walter Biffl, MD, medical director of trauma and acute care surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and Paige Colburn-Hargis, trauma injury prevention coordinator for Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The experts also outline the reasons that put older adults at higher risk for injury and why a high-quality helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment riders have.

There has been a surge in popularity of e-bikes recently. Sales of electric bikes rose by 400 percent since 2020. And with a recent effort to launch a state rebate system for e-bikes in Minnesota, they've been an even hotter topic. But with owning an e-bike comes a bigger responsibility than a regular bike. There are more safety risks when it comes to riding and charging your e-bike. In New York City in 2023, e-bike batteries were the source of 255 fires, 150 injuries and 18 deaths. Riding them have also proven to be more dangerous. A recent report from the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that fatalities associated with e-bike ridership also increased exponentially.Bike Minnesota Deputy Director Angela Olsen joined MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer to discuss how you can stay safe.

Megan Hottman earned her B.A. in Corporate Communications, magna cum laude, and her Juris Doctorate, both from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. After law school, she accepted two consecutive judicial clerkships; one in Jackson County Circuit Court in Kansas City, Missouri and one in Jefferson County District Court in Golden, Colorado. At the age of 29, she did what people told her was not possible - she hung her own shingle and formed Hottman Law Office (HLO), aka "TheCyclist-Lawyer.com." This practice, she says, "is the perfect combination of passion and profession - love of cycling and legal education culminated in this practice; I'm doing what I was meant to do." In 2012, she turned her attention to building up her practice, focusing exclusively on cycling law. Hottman has represented over 160 cyclists in their individual cases, as well as provided counsel to other lawyers, to cycling groups, bike shops, and organizations. In addition to representing her own clients, she has been endorsed as a cycling expert by other lawyers. She is known by Colorado cyclists as well as her fellow attorneys as THE go-to lawyer for anything cycling-related. She handles cases in all 50 states, and is licensed in Missouri, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska. She provides frequent legal education seminars on biking laws, trends she sees in her cases and those nationwide, and education to both novice and veteran riders alike. She also provides educational and training opportunities to law enforcement officers. In March 2015, Hottman and her practice were featured in an article titled "Broken Spokes" in Outside Magazine. A few months later, she was also featured on HBO Real Sports, in a "Bike Wars" episode. In 2019, she led a group of 24 cyclists in breaking the World Record for the Longest Static Cycling class (28 hours!).Megan Hottman InstagramThe Cyclist Lawyer Instagram | WebsiteEngine Inside FilmMaximum Enthusiasm Podcast Wise Athletes Podcast ft. Earlier this month, a 15-year-old boy riding an electric bike died following a collision with a vehicle at an intersection on Highway 20 in Bend. The teen was not wearing a helmet and wasn’t legally allowed to operate the e-bike since he was under 16 years of age. It was the first fatality involving an e-bike in Bend, according to a recent article in the Bend Bulletin, which also described concerns that some adolescents on e-bikes are not following the rules of the road and engaging in risky or illegal behaviors such as not wearing a helmet and texting while riding. At a city council meeting last Wednesday, Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said the council would explore updating laws on bike safety, “including accounting for newer, faster e-bike models that have become more popular,” while taking additional actions to make cycling in the city safer. Michael Kohn, an environment and public lands reporter at the Bend Bulletin, and Jonathan Maus, editor and publisher of Bike Portland, join us to talk about this issue.

The All Local afternoon update for November 14th, 2022
Last week, a prominent chef was killed after being hit by a truck near Cleveland High School in Portland. Sarah Pliner was riding her bike on Powell Boulevard, a state-owned road with no bike lanes. In response to the fatality, Oregon Department of Transportation Director Kris Strickler issued a statement yesterday.“Powell Boulevard (U.S. 26) was originally established and designed as a highway to move freight and people through Portland quickly and efficiently,” he said. “Recent incidents on Powell, including a tragic death on Oct. 4, are evidence that this road cannot, and should not, function as a traditional highway anymore.”While some roads in the city remain under state control, others, like 82nd Avenue, are now under city ownership. Advocates have called for a similar transfer to take place on Powell Boulevard. We learn more about road safety from Chris Warner, the director of the Portland Bureau of Transportation. A community forum will be held on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at Cleveland High School. Representatives from PBOT, ODOT Portland Public Schools and TriMet will be there, according to ODOT.
