Allie Koss is the owner and creator of Happy's Horse Treats. She is also a sophomore in high school and the FFA Chapter Sentinel at the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center of Paradise Valley, Arizona, which is a charter school specializing in agriculture. All students at the AAEC are FFA members, but there are different levels of activity for each of them. Allie has grown up in the city, and her parents are not experienced in agriculture. However, at age 4 Allie said she wanted to take horseback riding lessons. Being wise parents, they did not just let Allie jump right into full blown lessons. For one year they took her to the Phoenix Zoo where she could get exposure to horses and some experience riding to gauge if her level of enthusiasm was genuine. It turned out that it was, and Allie has been riding horses ever since. One day, at the barn that she rides at, a veterinarian was floating the teeth of a horse and showed Allie how to do it. From this point she was hooked and knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. This led to conversations with older people at the barn and the discover of the AAEC. Ultimately, this led her to the agricultural charter school and the FFA. It also led to her experimenting with making horse treats, her friends telling her that she should start a business and eventually, the birth of Happy's Horse Treats. Today, Allie sells horse treats from coast to coast and plans on growing her business through the end of high school, but possibly until she begins veterinary school in several years.

Errol Barnett is CBS News' transportation correspondent based in New York and Washington, D.C., reporting for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms including "CBS Mornings," the "CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell," and CBSN, CBS News' 24/7 digital streaming news service. Barnett has also served as a fill-in anchor on the "CBS Weekend News," "CBS This Morning: Saturday" and on CBSN. At CBS News, Barnett's intrepid reporting has covered a wide variety of national and international events. In the thick of the 2020 presidential campaign, his interview with then-candidate Joe Biden was widely cited for the news it uncovered and at the end of 2020 he was the first to report extra doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine were being discovered in vials by hospital staff across the country. Barnett was the only network journalist to fly through Hurricane Dorian when it stalled over the Bahamas as the most powerful storm to ever hit the country and reported extensively from Grand Bahama island documenting its aftermath. He has secured several exclusive interviews, including with the creator of the controversial facial recognition app Clearview AI, with the mother of a 9-year-old Illinois boy charged with murdering five relatives and with an Arizona woman attacked by a jaguar at a Phoenix Zoo. Barnett joined CBS News in 2016 as a Washington-based correspondent, covering the White House beat on weekends. He was with President Barack Obama during his final overseas trip in office and questioned President Donald Trump several times at the White House and aboard Air Force One about threats against journalists and other major issues. Before joining CBS News, Barnett spent almost a decade at CNN with his most recent role as anchor of weekday editions of "CNN Newsroom" airing on CNN and CNN International. Prior to anchoring from CNN's Atlanta headquarters, the network deployed Barnett as a general assignment correspondent to Johannesburg, South Africa and to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E as a midday anchor. While anchoring from the Middle East, Barnett was part of CNN's 2011 Peabody Award winning coverage of the "Arab Spring." He also hosted CNNI's weekly series "Inside Africa" for which he reported from 22 countries on the continent in 24 months including Madagascar, Senegal and Tunisia. His work earned the program a Salute to Excellence award from the National Association of Black Journalists. His journalism career began in 2001 at Channel One News, where, at age 18, he was the Los Angeles-based network's youngest anchor and reporter. Barnett covered the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, then-Senator Barack Obama's first national speech, and the New England heroin epidemic. Barnett earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a focus on international relations from the University of California, Los Angeles. A native of England, Barnett is a member of the Investigative Reporters and Editors, SAG/AFTRA, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists. The Phoenix Bakery was a downtown staple in the city’s earliest days. German immigrant Ed Eisele Sr. started working there in 1881, purchasing the shop at West Washington Street and Center Street (now Central Avenue) three years later. As the city grew, the bakery grew, leaving its original location in 1929. But the red-brick building that housed the original operation is still around today. There’s just one catch: it now resides at the Phoenix Zoo, miles away from its original location. How did it get there? In this week’s episode of Valley 101, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we’ll look at the history of the building, starting with the unlikely journey its owner took to immigrate to the U.S. and ending with its reconstruction at the Zoo.

We return to the Phoenix Zoo to discuss their collaborative work to save another endangered species, the Mexican Gray Wolf, which as recently as the early 1970's came within a handful of remaining founder animals from being deliberately exterminated across the West and Mexico. Senior carnivore keeper, Carl Mohler describes how caring for a social group pf predators that may one day be introduced to the wild is very different from other species found in zoos and aquariums. The relationships of trust that naturally form between keepers and most zoo animals is not only discouraged, it can place the animals at greater risk. As a result of the need to discourage theses wolves from habituating to humans, routine veterinary care, husbandry, and servicing of exhibits can present challenges compared to other species in a zoo. Even forms of enrichment must be disguised and utilize natural items the animals won't associate with human activities. Arizona is home to an array of wildlife unique to the southwestern U.S., including the often-misunderstood javelina. As Mesa resident Jim Albany asked, "Are javelina really dangerous?" This question took us on a journey to the Phoenix Zoo, a taxidermy-filled office room, and the Ben Avery Outdoor Archery Range in Phoenix. If you've ever run into a javelina in your neighborhood and not known how to react, you'll want to take a listen to this episode. Did you know that you can hunt javelina? We break down how it works and talk to local hunter Josh Kirchner about his adventures. To learn more, listen to this episode of Valley 101, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com. In this episode, you'll hear:Devorah Young, a hoofstockkeeper at the Phoenix Zoo, talk about javelinas she takes care of. Darren Julian, of Arizona Game and Fish Department, speak about how to react when you run into a javelina.Josh Kirchner, a local hunter, talk about why he hunts javelina and how to do it.

The highly touted federal and state program to conserve the Black-footed Ferret over the past three decades is really a story about two interconnected species, of a predator and its prey. Once thought extinct until a tiny number were rediscovered on a rancher's private property, Black-footed Ferret populations plummeted in the wild as humans sought to eradicate their primary source of food, prairie dogs. In hindsight we recognize today the tremendous ecological importance of prairie dogs that once numbered in the hundreds of millions across the grasslands of the U.S. If we are going to succeed in saving the ferret, then we must also save the prairie dog. Unfortunately, prairie dogs have lost 95% of their historic range according to www.worldwildlife.org and they are susceptible to the plague carried by fleas on infected rats that entered North America aboard European ships. Curator of Conservation Science for the Phoenix Zoo, Brad Poynter joins us for part two of our conversation on how modern zoos and aquariums work behind the scenes locally and internationally to study and preserve species that no one may ever see on display, but that are intrinsically important to conserve in order to maintain healthy environments. www.Phoenixzoo.org www.facebook.com/ZooLogicpodcast/ www.iReinforce.com www.zoologic.libsyn.com
By the late 1960's, the Arabian oryx was considered extinct in the wild. Some of the few remaining animals living in human care were sent to the Phoenix Zoo in the early 1970's because its desert climate matched the species' former natural range across the Middle East. From just nine animals, zoo professionals were able to establish a successful breeding herd with subsequent offspring sent to other zoos to rebuild a sustainable population. The program was so successful that by 1982, Arabian Oryx were beginning to be reintroduced in safe zones across its former range. It is the first species to ever be down listed from "extinct in the wild" to a much improved (but still at risk) status of "vulnerable." Today, the Phoenix zoo's rich history of conservation success is coordinated at its conservation center by Brad Poynter, curator of conservation science. The center is responsible for the preservation, and in some instances, the reintroduction of at-risk species native to Arizona, including the once believed extinct Black-footed ferret. www.Phoenixzoo.org www.iReinforce.com www.facebook.com/ZooLogicpodcast/

This week we come back from a little spring break to chat about some of the changes going on around our lives. ReAnna began a new diet and workout plan that has required some adjustment to our daily routines. But the results are proving to be worth it. At the start of spring break, we took family trip to the Phoenix Zoo that more than pushed our hill climbing endurance. Speaking of weight loss and endurance, we go on for quite a bit about our swimming experiences both with pools and beach life. We also chat about our 8 year wedding anniversary and our little Monster turning 5.Send us your WTF Moments at Facebook.com/momanddadcussSubscribe, Rate and Review on iTunesFind us on the Google Play Music AppEmail us at momanddadcuss@gmail.com

A smart farmer looks for every way he or she can use what they already have on farm to help make the farm money. Farm Stays are a great way to use the infrastructure that you already have to increase your profits, diversify your income, and add a little more security. On my farm, the farm I am farm manager of, I have a little bit of start-up capital, but I still have to worry about making the most of what I have available to me. One of the assets to this property is that there is an old farm house that would be perfect for a Bed & Breakfast. Of course since the B&B is on a working farm, I have something to offer my guests that no other business in the area can, a farm. Farming is the new "hip" thing to do. I know that bothers some of you. There are some fears that it may be a fad. Something that is here today, gone tomorrow. I don't think that's the case. As I see it, there are two unique opportunities that you have with farm stays: As a farm you can capitalize on agriculture's current popularity. As a Farm Stay host you have the ability to nurture that popularity and ensure its longevity by providing a great experience to those who are interested. Starting your own Farm Stay doesn't have to be expensive, and it doesn't have to be difficult. Scottie Jones joins us today to talk about how simple and how profitable it really is. It is a really good idea for farmers who don't already have good road frontage. Another way to get people to come to the farm. Scottie is not only a great resource for farm stays, but she has created a great resource for farm stays. FarmStayUs.com is the website to go to if you're looking to register your farm and increase exposure. Right Click to Download the MP3 In this farm podcast you will learn: How to get your farm started as a Farm Stay The profit margins on a particular farm stay How a Farm Stay can work in unison with your other farming ventures What animals are best on wet pasture Interview with Scottie Jones of Leaping Lamp Farm and FarmStayUs.com: Farm Stay U.S. founder Scottie Jones and her husband Greg raise grass-fed lamb at Leaping Lamb Farm in the green hills of Oregon's Coast Range. Since 2006 they have also operated a thriving farm stay, where they've hosted guests from near and far. Scottie brings years of entrepreneurial experience to Farm Stay U.S., having been the Arizona franchisee for the socially-responsible British company, The Body Shop, and having worked in retail services and marketing at the Phoenix Zoo, where species survival and conservation were critical components of zoo education. Now through Farm Stay U.S., she hopes to provide an economic, educational, even spiritual bridge for rural and urban Americans eager to renew a healthier food and farm system, and access to memorable and wonderful guest experiences.
