Do you know what I'm loving at the moment? Normality. At least as much normality as you can get with a mask still on.But as of tonight mandates are gone, and vaccine passes are gone - more steps towards a more relaxed lifestyle. Our local pub was excited - it posted on social media that it looks forward to welcoming everyone back into the pub and not having to scan vaccine passes, and exclude people  It also said it'd love to see Covid dropped as the only conversation being had. The pubs post said “let's try to keep Covid chat to a minimum and find something more interesting to talk about”. Too right. And how good is it to see crowds back at the Super Rugby? And good crowds too. What a difference it makes to the atmosphere and the vibe of live sport to have people there enjoying it in person. We are slowly getting back to the way it should be.Not everyone's on board of course. These changes have some concerned. The Herald had a story yesterday on the age divide over the reaction to mandates going. It said, “Research New Zealand, a privately owned social and business research organisation, found there were almost double the number of older respondents - aged 55 and above - unhappy with the decision, compared to younger respondents - those aged 18 to 34." It goes without saying that the fear will be hard to shake – and for some more than others.Fear is a very powerful messaging tool and there seems a natural propensity for humans to gravitate towards all the fear possibilities in every scenario. But as we push forward, hopefully more and more of us will see that life can indeed go back to some kind of normal. A different normal obviously – I doubt it will ever be the way it was pre-Covid. There will always be that residual fear or reluctance to behave in the same way we did pre-Covid. For example, sharing drink bottles, I can't see anyone feeling good about that for a long time congregating in large crowds in small spaces, hugging and kissing strangers. Those things I think will take a long time to revert to pre-Covid ways. But given our collective nervous systems have been through the ringer the last couple of years, I'm looking forward to a bit of calm in the coming months. Hopefully it's not the calm before another storm. Hopefully there won't be a stampede of sickness come winter. But I guess what we have gotten good at is taking it all one day at a time. Or one week at a time. I'm hoping this week also sees us go to an orange traffic light. I mean it's tragic to be “hoping” for a traffic light colour because there is an argument we shouldn't even be in any traffic light system at all, but given we are, orange is our best hope. I doubt we will see green anytime soon.So by the end of this week we will have mandates removed, vaccine passes gone, and if we are very lucky, we'll be in an orange light. Well some of us at least may be anyway. So I start the week optimistic today, that normality is knocking.

New Zealanders want the parliamentary term increased from three to four years and 90 per cent of them have full trust and confidence in the democratic process. That is according to the latest survey from Research New Zealand, which looked at the length of New Zealand's parliamentary term, the desirability of compulsory voting and the trust in democracy.Research NZ Partner Emanuel Kalafatelis said after the US election they decided to seek the opinion of New Zealanders on how our democratic processes line up with those around the world. He said the vast majority of New Zealanders have confidence in the country's democratic system."We got 90 per cent and that is significantly higher than the level of opinion with regard to the democratic processes of Australia, 66 [per cent], the United Kingdom at 55, the US at 23 and Hong Kong - less than 10, specifically 8 per cent."The vast majority of Kiwis have confidence in the New Zealand's democratic system. Photo / Mark MitchellKalafatelis said 61 per cent of people wanted the parliamentary term to be increased from three years to four."I think we should not discount that result, I think we should keep an eye on that because obviously a significant proportion of New Zealanders are in support of that for one reason or another."Younger respondents were less in favour of changing the parliamentary term than older respondents, he said."Older respondents obviously have had more experience of the electoral process you could say and, therefore, they could have an opinion that three years isn't enough for a government to get its feet under the table and do the stuff that it needs to do and so maybe that's behind the result that we've got here."Only 40 per cent of respondents believed that voting should be compulsory, compared with 46 per cent who do not think it should be compulsory. But Kalafatelis said it was not clear from the survey whether respondents were aware that New Zealanders who are over 18 have to enrol for a general election, even though it is not compulsory to voteOnly 20 per cent of respondents were in favour of lowering the voting age from 18 to 16.Kalafatelis said as expected that increased somewhat for 18 to 34-year-old respondents where 28 per cent favoured the move."It's not a hugely bigger figure, so I think another way of looking at that is to look at the number of young people aged 18 to 34 who aren't in favour of increasing it - roughly 70 per cent - so even that age group are saying 'no I don't think it's a good idea that we lower the voting age from 18 to 16'."Kalafatelis said New Zealanders were clearly proud of the country's democratic processes and the only idea on the table in terms of electoral reform was increasing the parliamentary term from three to four years.Text by RNZ

Well here we are. You made it. Through the tedium of lockdown you have emerged into the light of a reduced normal.  Never before have we been so excited by the banal. We have been thrilled to do a little bit of what we used to do before.Research New Zealand has been polling New Zealanders throughout the lockdown to gauge how we're coping and how we're hoping. This week it was the return of freedom. Strangely enough, we were all loving that. Then they asked what you were going to do with your freedom. Most popular was establishing contact with friends and family, which is a no brainer, really. I phoned a friend yesterday and he had travelled for an hour to give his grandchild a cuddle and he was as happy as Larry.Next priority for New Zealanders was having a haircut. Strange one that. I guess it's a metaphorical cutting away of the worry that built up over seven weeks of tension.  Plus it's a new day and a new look and now we're feeling fine.  It's the same as the queues and busy times I've seen outside nail parlours. As a man I've never really realised just how much time, money and attention women dedicate to their nails.  I will be more observant and more complimentary of a good pair of nails in the future. Many New Zealanders are aching to go to a café for a meal. To sit down and let someone cook for them and do the dishes. It's going to the drive-thru on steroids. And then down the rankings was leaving your local and going somewhere else. That was the top priority for me. I've been in lockdown with all my family living under one roof for the first time in three years so I'm good.  I'm loving my hair and the biggest beard I've ever grown and I have no desire to queue for anything considering I've just spent seven weeks avoiding everyone. All we wanted to do was go on an adventure somewhere other than our suburb. Which is why yesterday we went to a West Coast beach. To get there we drove through a surprisingly busy city.  Bumper to bumper.  Past the long Lincoln Road queues for drive-thru Maccas that still amaze me.  Past the barbershops with their phone gazing men all in a line.  Past the nail parlours filled to overflowing and barely social distancing. Then over the mountains to the sea beyond. It was perfect. Not a breath of wind. Long rollers and a warmth that felt summery even though June is around the corner. What struck me as we drove into Piha was the handmade signs as we went down the hill.“Residents only! Stay in your neighbourhood”Cooped up in you city suburbs I don't think you quite get how the far-flung places and the small communities saw the invasion of bach dwellers and daytrippers as a dangerous threat.  That every visitor was bringing the virus to town.  To towns without medical facilities.  To towns without supplies.I spoke this week with a resident of Great Barrier who told me how the superyachts picked the island's supplies clean much to the horror of the locals. It makes you understand why checkpoints and roadblocks sprung up.  It was neighbourhood watch on steroids. It made me realise that the anger at the rule of law being bent lacked any empathy for the feelings of the communities under threat from people with only their own selfish desires top of mindAnd it reminded me that New Zealand is just a small town now in the wider scheme of things.  Our borders closed, our roadblocks up, our doors shut and our suspicion of outsiders heightened. We're all in this together.  Trapped on a glorious ark in the Pacific. You should pinch yourself.  You don't know how lucky you are.
