This week we speak to overland explorer, Petch Nethnapat, about his Travel Bubble choices. After growing up in Thailand, Petch moved to the US to study. Once graduating at the age of 23, he embarked on an epic overland journey of more than 15,000km from Thailand to Morocco – without taking a single flight. Now more than 70 countries later, his slower pace of travelling has allowed him to see and photograph life on the road, as well as learn from the locals along the way. Some of his memorable routes include a road trip to Aleppo from Beirut, hitchhiking through the jungle in Guinea Bissau and travelling from Syria to Afghanistan. In 2021 alone, Petch travelled to 23 countries including spending time in 14 different provinces in Afghanistan just before the Taliban takeover and this episode we talk all about travelling through the Pandemic and how Covid didn't put a stop to Petch's adventures. It is easy to why he was named as Noman Mania's most Intrepid Traveller of the year in 2021. He is now co-founder of Saga Expeditions which offer unique and insightful tours, with 2022 offering trips to the likes of Togo and Benin for the Voodoo Festival, South Sudan, Yemen and an expedition to Peru with the Matses ‘Jaguar' Tribe. Tune in to hear where he has chosen, involving countries that many deem too risky to currently enter, where to get delicious cold soup and where there is a must-see mud mosque. In this episode we speak to adventurist Erik Cooper. You can often find him in his own words doing ‘cool shit' such as competing in the Mongol Derby – the world's longest horse race – or helping to put together the Argentinian Gaucho Derby. Speaking in July from a ranch in Missouri, Erik goes in to detail about the three Travel Bubble destinations which, unusually, he has chosen based on the people - rather than the place itself. Erik is also a tour leader and we talk about his unique and bespoke adventure tours - where you need to pass an interview to be a guest, as well as how to make plans with nomads, freak snowstorms in the summer and where to get the best sautéed mushrooms. Erik has a fascinating and refreshing way of travelling – strongly believing that it is about the people and the relationships you build rather than the number of stamps in your passport. Erik left a quieter rural life in the USA at 18 to live in New York and later Los Angeles. His passion for horses has since seen him travel all corners of the globe. Listen to this episode for his Travel Bubble choices, top tips and some amazing stories along the way. I'd highly recommend following Erik on Instagram at @ErikCooperAdventurist, he has some amazing photos. 本集學習內容: Taiwan discusses travel bubble with Japan CECC head says 'active bilateral discussions' underway The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) head said Taiwan and Japan are discussing relaxing border restrictions between the two countries as COVID cases subside. Philip Lo (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division, recently suggested the decrease could be due to better vaccine coverage and greater compliance with epidemic prevention measures. Infectious disease physician Lin Shi-pi (林氏璧) posted on Facebook on Nov. 1 that if the outbreak in Japan is brought under control, a "Taiwan-Japan tourism bubble" is conceivable. Lin wrote that the last time Tokyo reported single-digit cases was May 31, 2020. The daily average went up, but over the past seven days it has started to trend lower, with an average of 23.4 cases per day. On Nov. 1 Osaka only reported seven cases, the first time the city had reported single-digit infections since July 2020. As a whole, Japan reported 86 cases on Nov. 1, the first time the country had reported under triple-digit cases since June 27, 2020. Lin wrote that if numbers continue to drop at this rate, a "Palau-style" tourism bubble between Japan and Taiwan is possible. Lin suggested that such a bubble should begin with Okinawa or more rural areas such as Shikoku, the Hokuriku region, or the Tohoku region. He then conceded, "I know I'm dreaming; people can always have dreams, right?" At a press conference on Friday (Nov. 5), a reporter asked whether, given the slowing outbreak in Japan, a travel bubble could be created between Japan and Taiwan. Health Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) responded by saying the outbreak in Japan seems to be "slowly disappearing, which is a good phenomenon." Chen added that "both parties are also actively discussing bilateral matters through the representative offices."

Despite arguably the strictest lockdown on the planet, Vietnam is still playing with the idea of a travel bubble agreement with other countries and has earmarked Phu Quoc as a possible destination. This week marks the start of the two-way travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand. So there's no better time for Gary and Hannah to welcome back Simon Westaway, Executive Director of the Australian Tourism Industry Council, to the show. Back in December, Simon accurately predicted April for the two-way travel bubble getting started. In a fascinating discussion, we look at how Australia's domestic tourism sector has recovered, and trends have shifted. These include more travel within home states, and a surge in self-drive trips. Meanwhile, some regions of the country have never had it so good. Plus, the outlook for travel between Australia and New Zealand as the winter sports season beckons, and some of the new routes that airlines are introducing. Beyond the bubble, are South Pacific islands next on the itinerary, and will Australia push ahead with a much-touted travel corridor with Singapore? And how about Vietnam? Finally, what's the outlook for long-haul international travel in 2021, or more likely 2022?

Across South East Asia and throughout Asia Pacific, talking up travel bubbles is in vogue once more after disappearing off radar since the Hong-Kong Singapore bubble burst last November. So what's different and what's still the same this time? This week, Gary and Hannah sweep through Asia Pacific to see how vaccines and economic urgency are bringing Travel Bubbles back onto the political agenda. In some countries, the term Travel Bubble is being replaced with alternative iterations like Safe Travel Corridor and Safe Travel Zone, but they will still be small-scale reopening models with plentiful restrictions and protocols to which travellers must adhere. Without a proper two-way bubble yet in place, South East Asia is closely watching developments in Australia and New Zealand as they look to reciprocate the (currently) one-way Trans-Tasman Bubble. We've got the latest announcements from Down Under which may influence how bubble negotiations develop across the region in future.
