French exchange student, Eloi Rolland, was last seen five years ago, today. The then-18-year-old's disappearance has baffled authorities ever since... Was it a murder, kidnapping, an accident, did he get lost in the bush, commit suicide or plan an escape. Is he still alive, does he want to be found? He searches Google Maps for directions to Piha about 5am the morning he vanished. He catches a train. He walks for nearly two hours. He turned on to Piha Road at 9.16am. At 9.48 the battery on his phone goes dead. And then... nothing. Nothing for five years. Today on The Front Page, Herald senior journalist Anna Leask joins us as we take a look back at Eloi’s disappearance. We’ll also hear some from Eloi’s parents, Thierry and Catherine, and Bruno Dupuis of Acapella Productions, who directed a documentary series in France about Eloi’s story. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. It's my last day at work for the year... and I'm off to the beach... Every year... because I'messentially an angry and quite grumpy person.... I go to the beach and I get mad. Angry at people doing dumb stuff... The problem with the beach is it's public. I can't yet afford my own private one. Until then... here's my top five 5 things NOT to do at the beach this summer: Rubbish Bins. They get full quickly. So everybody just piles their shit sky-high a biohazard version of jenga. Don't do that... it's unsightly. If the bins are full please dispose of your rubbish in the ocean... It's far less visible to your fellow beachgoers.. Seriously... Though... Just put it in the boot and take it home. Or. Save it up all summer and do a mass dumping at the council chambers in January. Music. Just Don't. You may like Coldplay or Cardi B, others prefer the soothing sound of the actual ocean. It's quite hard to hear with Chris Martin whaling out of your stupid UE boom. The beach (and the bush, for that matter) are not just visual spectacles, but also an aural experience. Try closing one's eyes to the sun... and listening to the sound of the waves. The birds. The magic. But not your music. Togs. There's always some wozer in the Herald over summer whinging about a woman's bikini being too revealing... too much skin for my liking. It's just not right! Honestly, just look away. People can wear whatever they like. Just ensure your nips and bits are covered... other than that... dental floss bikinis are A-OK. And if you're one of those people who complain... are you incensed at the woman's body, or the fact your husband drooling behind his dirty dog sunnies? Swimming in jeans and t-shirts. Do you have a death wish? 86% of drownings happen during summer and you're a lot heavier in denim. That is a fact. You see this out at Piha... people being rescued wearing trackpants. Honestly. Take a leaf out of the dental floos book. Finally... I love a good sunshade tent... the pop-up ones... some people have a full almost-camping set up. I'm all for it. But you cannot.... and I've seen this... set it up and leave it for days on end at a busy beach... overnight. You cannot bags bits of the beach. It belongs to nobody and everybody and that is entitled and shameful behaviour. Wishing you all a warm, quiet, easy breezy beach experience this summer. Suoraa puhetta johtaa Ruben Stiller. Mika Panzarin aihe kumpuaa historiasta.

Dave Wood is best known as being Israel Adesanya's breathing and mindset coach – and was one of our favourite, and most popular, guests in 2023. He runs a two-day Calm Under Pressure workshop in Piha and the course – and his work has a strong connection to the show.Steve went on it last year, it's where he was inspired by Jemarl Paerata's story and we had him on the show as a guest – and this month Seamus attended it.We spend the first 15 mins in this one unpacking the weekend and what Seamus got from it, before digging into what Dave's been up to for the last year. We talk about the incredible growth and success of his business, the key to finding balance in a busy life, the importance of being selfish – and prioritizing yourself, how he helped the world's best squash player, training the Warriors and why understanding the impact of your thinking, emotions and actions is pivotal to achieving personal growth. As the dusk settles over the serene beaches of Piha, an ominous question hangs heavy in the salty air: Is there a serial killer at large? Sir Bob Harvey, former mayor joins me to share his theory on the unexplained disappearances that have cast a long shadow over this picturesque New Zealand community. Weaving through a tangle of abandoned cars and undisturbed personal effects, Sir Bob calls for a renewed investigation into these cold cases that continue to baffle locals and authorities alike. Life is a multifaceted journey, and this episode is a testament to that complexity, as Bob shares the transitions and transformations that come with public service and leadership. From the poignant realization of adoption at 50 to the embrace of a new identity in serving the community, this conversation is a reflection on how unexpected turns can redefine our purpose. Sir Bob Harvey shares with us the nuanced parallels between the vigilance required on the sands and the humility essential in the corridors of power. As he reflects on a political career marked by service, we are reminded of the quiet strength that comes with knowing when to take a bow, offering listeners a narrative imbued with wisdom, grace, and the unwavering love for a life spent safeguarding others.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A new documentary series explores an infamous set of disappearances around one of New Zealand's most dangerous beaches. As well as the six missing people who vanished in Piha, Black Coast Vanishings reveals others have had 'near misses'- fuelling speculation there's a serial killer in the area. Co-director Candida Beveridge says the series was designed to give a voice to concerns about the safety of the community. "What surprised us is what came out during the investigation- women being stalked, women being terrified in the bush. That, we felt, needs investigation." Hamilton's Wellington Street Beach might not be Piha or Anchorage Bay, but in the landlocked city it's an iconic destination. On a hot day, the strip of sand on the east bank of the Waikato river is full of school kids doing manu off the jetty, and residents having a paddle. Storms and river fluctuations this year have caused the jetty to collapse, and the city council is planning a $1.7 million makeover for the park and beach area. As Libby Kirkby-McLeod reports, people want to enhance the beach without losing its low-key charm.

Auckland Council has unanimously voted to buy out about 700 flood-damaged properties, as part of a $2 billion cost-sharing storm package alongside Government. Category 3 homes, deemed uninhabitable and unfixable from the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle will be purchased at 95 per cent of market valuation. The largest cluster of affected homes is in the West Auckland suburbs of Ranui, Swanson and Henderson and coastal communities of Piha, Karekare and Muriwai. West Auckland Muriwai resident Caroline Bell-Booth's home is still standing, but she hasn't been able to return. She says Friday's announcement is a glimmer of hope, but also tells Kathryn there are still many unanswered questions. Another Muriwai resident, Laura Preston says her home is stuck between categories 2 and 3, and more assessment is needed on whether it can be affordably fixed.

After more than two months, Aucklanders can finally head back to their famous black sand surf beach, Piha. Cyclone Gabrielle left a wave of destuction on the region's west coast, meaning only Piha residents have been allowed to enter. Needless to say, there were a fair few happy surfers when the cordons were finally lifted this morning. But this comes with a warning that restrictions could be re-introduced if bad weather causes any further damage to the roads. Reporter Tom Taylor and camera operator Marika Khabazi have the story.
