Today's podcast features Chris Kelly, the owner of Fitness Rehab and The Musical Athlete. He has extensive education in biomechanics and human performance systems. Chris balances health and performance while teaching clients to understand their bodies and manage movement efficiently. As a teacher, he has trained hundreds of professionals in topics like breathing mechanics, movement assessment, and exercise application. Many training conversations relate to what happens from the ground upwards, but not often do we discuss what occurs from the head, downwards in athletic movement. What happens at the level of the head, is also a mirror for what is happening in the chest, and hips, so knowing this area helps paint a greater picture of the total athlete. On today's podcast, Chris covers aspects of airway, head, and neck as they pertain to sprinting and human movement, along with compensatory strategies that can power movement under conditions of fatigue. He also talks about the nature of reciprocal movement in force absorption, oscillatory training principles, and air-pressure-based principles of movement and performance. This show offers a unique and helpful lens by which to greater understand the big picture of athleticism and training methodology. In 2016, while earning his doctorate in music at the University of Southern California, Alexander Lloyd Blake founded the choral group Tonality. His initial aim was to create a choral ensemble that would represent and celebrate the full diversity of Los Angeles' population. That done, Tonality started to focus each concert on social-justice issues, from global warming to gun violence, always providing audiences with an array of resources to encourage activism and change.Tonality's repertoire is as varied as its membership, ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary pieces in a variety of styles and genres, but Alex's commitment to harnessing the power of choral music to foment social change has remained central. In just eight years, Tonality has garnered nationwide attention. In 2020 Tonality received the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and in 2022 Alex and Tonality's work were featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” They've released two albums, and just this past spring, Tonality won its first Grammy for performing on composer Carla Patullo's album “So She Howls.” The ensemble has collaborated with a number of world-renowned composers, including Reena Esmail and Michael Giacchino, and has performed with such artists as Pete Townsend, Lara Downes and Björk. They have also sung for TV and film soundtracks, including “Space Jam: a New Legacy.”Here Alex explains what led him to found Tonality and details the intricacies of leading a choral ensemble that has to remain increasingly nimble and focused.https://www.ourtonality.org/https://alexanderlblake.com/

I asked her about her experiences in HBCU marching band culture, at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and being part of a positive community of mentors and peers through the Composers Diversity Collective. With her background as a percussionist and her use of Morse code, I was interested to hear about her creative process, and also about some of her visual art projects and collaborative installations. EmmoLei's discography encompasses many albums and singles, and often integrates soul, jazz, classical, and rhythm and blues. Her single, Don't Fight, was included on Adult Swim's OPUS compilation album. EmmoLei has collaborated with many award-winning filmmakers, and through her creative audio company, Bèl Son, has worked with brands like Nike, Buzzfeed and Kamala Harris for the People. At the beginning of this episode, we dig into EmmoLei's unique score for The Other Black Girl, which I watched and recommend. It's based on a best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, and the show is an edgy thriller that's a social commentary with humourous twists, and shines a light on the expeirence of Black women in corporate America, specifically in the publishing industry. “Being text-focused has been really beneficial and a change from the way I've seen concerts programmed in the past: ‘Do the keys align? What is the soundscape?' Those things are important, but for these concerts, the message that we're putting out there has to be priority. We are choral musicians, and we have words and stories to share, and those have to take precedent.”Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake works as a conductor, composer/arranger, vocal contractor, singer, and music activist. Blake is the Founding Artistic Director of Tonality, an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace, and social justice through a culturally diverse choral setting. He also serves as Principal Associate Conductor of the National Children's Chorus. As an arranger, Blake's “Wade in the Water” was a featured arrangement at the 2013 North Carolina Music Educators Association convention and is published with Santa Barbara Music Publishing. His choral arrangements are published by Alliance Music Publishing and Walton Music Publishing. Other musical activities include an opera conducting premiere at the 2019 Prototype Festival in New York City, preparing choirs for live performances with UCLA Center for the Art of Performance, and vocally arranging for a nationally televised performance during the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.Recent film and TV credits include singing on the soundtrack of Jordan Peele's “Us,” Disney's “Lion King,” and Pixar's “Spies in Disguise,” and leading sessions for Warner Bros "Space Jam: A New Legacy" and Netflix film "Escape from Spiderhead." Blake also worked as the choral contractor and vocal arranger for Andy Grammer's performance at the 2019 ARDYs (Radio Disney Awards). 90% of the problems people have can be solved by clear, concise communication.  This means stating your intentions.  Creating solutions to problems.  Communicating those solutions as you identify the problems.  Working hand in hand with anyone and everyone in power to move the needle.  A lot of people argue on social media.  They spend their time attacking people flapping their gums, but not saying anything.  Tonality is a huge part of communication.  Body language is another major factor in communication.  And then, there's the actual words.  The body, and tonality are the 2 most important factors in communication.  If you want to solve problems, learn to communicate effectively.  It starts with swallowing your pride and ego so you communicate the solutions to the problems.  When things go wrong you can't disappear.  Don't go ghost.  Communicate.  Create solutions.  Implement those solutions immediately and then communicate it to everyone so they know it's been solved.  #RiseAbove  HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  This planet is based on an algorithm and with every positive action, there is an adverse reaction.  Ryan Stewman rose and overcame a life of addiction, imprisonment, divorce, and circumstances that would break the spirit of the average human being.  He went on to create a powerful network of winners and champions in life and business creating a movement quickly changing lives one day at a time.  Learn more at: www.JoinTheApex.com   Check out this show and previous killer episodes of the ReWire Podcast in Apple Podcasts.
