I'm in a law class at Pepperdine, studying for my MBA. In our first assignment, we're supposed to take this unbelievable amount of text and turn it into an outline using a very specific structure and methodology. I'm thinking, “Why do we need to outline? I just read all of this text and highlighted certain sections of it in detail. It's fine. Plus, It seems like a waste of time. And aren't all outlines the same anyway? Why is structure so important?” I begrudgingly do the assignment and turn it in. Then we get our next assignment… more outlining! Next assignment? Alas more outlining again! By the middle of the semester, something dawns on me: I start to realize that I'm looking at paragraphs of text completely differently. I can pinpoint what matters most even faster. At the end of the semester… I am an outlining Ninja. This skill that I learned in my Graduate Studies has turned out to be a tool that I use to this very day. Every time I read any block of text I can't help but condense it down to its most essential elements which has definitely helped influence my path of specializing and Short Form Communications. I love to take complex things and condense them down to their most essential elements, especially in storytelling. The elements we use in stories really matter–to the listener, to the memories we can create in the minds of our listener, and to the integrity of the story. Michael Stinson has an incredible career exploring and teaching the cinematic art of storytelling, in addition to many other forms. And today on the Storytelling School Podcast, he's here to talk about how stories bind the world, share the tools he uses to explain storytelling, reveal what keeps an audience engaged, and tell us: How can experiencing different cultures influence your storytelling? Why is it a mistake to tell everything in your story? What's the best way to create suspense, and what other tools are essential for storytelling? And how are cinematic journeys like cathartic, storytelling labyrinths for the audience? What you will learn in this episode: How you can craft the most effective personal narrative to tell others Why suspense is so effective for audience engagement (and how it differs from surprise) What three flavors of conflict you can choose in your story Who is Michael? Michael Stinson is the professor of Film and Media Studies at Santa Barbara City College where he has taught courses in film studies, film production, screenwriting, film editing, cinematography, and directing for over two decades. He is also the author of Labyrinth of Light: A Journey Into Cinema and has co-directed the 10-10-10 filmmaking and screenwriting competition at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival for the past 20 years. Prior to film school, Michael spent a decade abroad as a photojournalist based in Europe and the Far East. He worked for five years as a screenwriter for the Hollywood studios after earning a Master's degree in Film and Television from UCLA. Then, he began teaching at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has taught courses in film and media at the University of Rome, New School University, and Los Angeles Film School. Michael is a Member Emeritus of the Writers Guild of America, Society of American Travel Writers, and PEN America. Currently, he directs international film programs in Rome, Paris, and Tokyo. It's not.” - Dr. Seuss Resources: Frank Patterson on LinkedIn (in/frankmpatterson) Matt Walker - "Sleep is a Superpower" TED Talk Kris Kristofferson - "Here Comes That Rainbow Again" The GROW Method G Goal The Goal is the end point, where the client wants to be. The goal has to be defined in such a way that it is very clear to the client when they have achieved it. R Reality The current Reality is where the client is now. What are the issues, the challenges, how far are they away from their goal? O Obstacles There will be Obstacles stopping the client getting from where they are now to where they want to go. If there were no Obstacles the client would already have reached their goal. Options Once Obstacles have been identified, the client needs to find ways of dealing with them if they are to make progress. These are the Options. W Way Forward The Options then need to be converted into action steps which will take the client to their goal. These are the Way Forward. The "W" of GROW can also include When and by Whom and the Will (or intention or commitment) to do it. Coming Next: Please join us next week, Episode 131, with Joe Fortune, CEO, Mast-Jägermeister US. The Director's Six Senses is an innovative, unique, and engaging approach to the development of the skills that every visual storyteller must have. It's based on the premise that a director is a storyteller 24/7 and must be aware of the “truth” that he or she experiences in life in order to be able to reproduce it on the big screen. Through a series of hands-on exercises and practical experiences, the reader develops the “directorial senses” in order to be able to tell a story in the most effective way.Enjoy my conversation with Simone Bartesaghi.

Caledonia was the kid growing up who made their own costumes, props, and was constantly building whether it was forts out of cardboard or clay models of her favorite cartoon worlds. The odd hobbies she had as a child grew to be her biggest assets as an adult; using them to design, construct, and decorate sets for film and television. She is no stranger to working as a production designer, art director, prop builder, construction coordinator, and graphic designer in her ten year career in the film industry. Caledonia studied and graduated from the Orange County School of the Arts with a focus in Film and Television, and later graduated from the Los Angeles Film School with a focus in Production Design. She has done a number of short and student films and is branching out with her first feature coming out in the winter of 2020. "Best Director Award"(2012 LA Film, TV and Webisode Festival) winner, Alex Bram is on a mission to bring suspense, surrealism and quality back to horror. Gaining support as a new voice, his various projects have been able to attract legendary figures of the genre rallying behind him. For his werewolf epic, “NEW BREED,” Special Creature Make-Up Effects legend Steve Johnson (“American Werewolf in London,” “Species”) has joined to deliver on the concept of applying the latest technology available, in the most tasteful yet terrifying way, to bring to life beasts like we've never seen before. Eduardo Sanchez (Blair Witch Project Director) will bring Bram's “CLOUDLAND” to life. That project is being spearheaded by Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of “Final Destination.” Reddick is both co-screenwriter with Bram and Executive Producer. Alex Bram's award-winning psychological thriller "Body of Work" honors the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, while at the same time, using modern technology to bring about a new wave of suspenseful filmmaking. That film brought two "Best Cinematography" awards and one Canadian "People's Choice". For three years, Bram founded and ran the "Carnival of Darkness Film Festival," which showcased the very best short horror films from around the world. This yearly event was held at Los Angeles Film School and was put on like a twisted carnival experience.
