Lock in to a groove and turn the vibes up to "Immaculate," this week the EarWax crew dives into The Roots' "Things Fall Apart."Cody and Hilary touch on the Soulquarians, and the sessions that resulted in some of the most stunning work of this era. "Things Fall Apart" was the result of two batches of sessions - one a host of Philadelphia community members and friend so the group. The next at Electric Lady Studios, with folks like Lady B, Mos Def, and J Dilla in the room."Things Fall Apart" is one of those records that you've heard, even if you haven't. Its thumbprint is all over contemporary hip-hop, soul, jazz, and R&B. With the group ready to break through, they created something that did more than break them, it locked them in as legends. Thanks for listening! Frizz and Bob continue to celebrate Black History Month with Erykah Badu's quintessential Baduizm. With a pour of Glen Moray Phoenix Rising and a 1792 Full Proof, we talk about one of the most introspective and transformative albums in recent decades. We get into some of the whackiest religions, the late, great Roy Hargrove, Mickey's malt liquor, reincarnation, and the spiritual movement that is Baduizm.
It's Dilla Time this week on the Good Music Show. On this episode, Julius leads us in a discussion on the legendary producer/rapper J Dilla, who tragically only has one 3 album run to talk about. We'll cover his debut solo album, his most famous album that arrived 3 days before his passing, and what should be considered his final album even though it was finished and released posthumously. Dilla made a huge impact on music in general, so of course we'll talk about the many projects that he worked on and the resulting influence.Dilla is a fascinating and mysterious figure, so we'll attempt to bust some of the myths surrounding him and his work. We hope listeners will get a chance to look past the huge impact of Donuts to discover everything he brought to the table and appreciate his unique talent.Sources:"Dilla Time" - Dan Charnas (excerpt available here)MixMagPopMattersPitchforkSongs featured in this episode:Welcome 2 DetroitClimax - Slum VillageRunnin' - The PharcydeStill Shining - Busta RhymesY'all Ain't ReadyDonuts (Outro) / WorkinonitStopWhip You With a Strap - Ghostface KillahGeek Down (featuring Busta Rhymes)J Dilla's Last BeatTime: The Donut of the HeartSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Frizz cracks open a new bottle of Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair, and Bob pours a personal favorite Community Batch Private Selection from Makers Mark while enjoying the self titled debut album by the Black Pumas. Join us for a rip roarin' nostalgic time as we gab about animal band names, the long and winding road of two musicians meeting by chance, and break down how all the familiar inspirations lead to one of the best new albums in recent music. Also... take a drink everytime you hear the word "organic."

This week we've dedicated the episode to the legendary hip-hop producer and rapper J Dilla, broadcast the day after what would have been his 50th birthday. Dilla's pioneering work revolutionised the genre, essentially providing the baseline for Lofi HipHop as well as influencing many others like Neo-Soul, R&B, Jazz and Pop. His use of soulful samples, intricate drum patterns and combination of Swung and Straight time created the conflicted time feel now called “Dilla Time”. J Dilla was a key player in the Soulquarians group (that we often mention), collaborating with numerous artists, including A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and Erykah Badu. Jay left behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire and influence artists across all genres to this day. We hope you enjoyed the second official instalment of Album Club with J Dilla Donuts. Head over to our Instagram @soulsouppp, for our thoughts and an interesting synopsis of the album. Unfortunately there was only half off Soul Soup this week with Aisling on the mic, Florrie could not attend due to college deadlines :(
One of the greatest bassists ever joins Questlove Supreme in the studio for a special interview. Pino Palladino discusses his journey from working on hit songs in the 1980s to joining Questlove, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and others as a critical figure in the Soulquarians sound in the late 1990s. In the 2000s, he toured with The Who, and continues working with the best in music. Pino discusses his playing style on the fretted bass, his move from Wales to the United States, and some stolen guitars. This episode is for lovers of innovative musicians discussing their craft.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 3 of The Late Sessions is here. Kelvy is joined by HarleyHustle and they talk about The Soulquarians. While they talk about them, it leads to a conversation about the documentary "Dave Chappelle's Block Party" then leads to a discussion about Quest love's appearance on Open Mike Eagle. This is a layered conversation with context as usual.

Jennifer Hartswick, better known to some simply as "JHA," is a trumpeter, vocalist and one of the most exciting performers in music today. An original member of the Trey Anastasio Band, she is known by Phish fans to "crush horns and vocals," whether she is sharing the stage with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Phish, Christian McBride, Tom Petty, Aaron Neville, Carlos Santana, The Rolling Stones, Big Gigantic, Dave Matthews, or releasing her own critically acclaimed music. Her newest record, Something In The Water came out in September of 2022 and features her honest voice and joyful spirit over a catalog of songs.JHA joins the Club to discuss her career in music and the moody, sexy, neo-soul classic Voodoo, by D'Angelo. A record that spun out of the Soulquarians orbit, with influence, production and creative support from among others Questlove, Q-Tip, Method Man, and Rafael Saddiq, "Voodoo" went platinum and was on just about everyone's Album of the Year list in 2000. Others may simply know the album because of the ultra-sultry track "Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, which, if you know nothing else about this song, you know that it features a music video, and some of you may just want to go check that out right now. B. Cox is joined by Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) of the Breaking Atoms Podcast to review Little Brother's classic debut studio album The Listening as it turns 20. The group, which was formerly made up of the trio of emcees Phonte and Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, met as students on the campus of North Carolina Central University. They bonded over their shared love and passion of hip-hop and formed a collective with other North Carolina college students who were hip-hop artists and producers which would become known as the Justus League.Pooling together their resources and creativity, the trio started recording their debut album. After working their local hip-hop scene and the college radio circle in their home state of North Carolina, the group signed its record deal with ABB Records and gained a sizable fanbase, following and a community online though forums such as their own Justus League The LAWN, OkayPlayer and other hip-hop sites. Boosting the groups popularity was the skills and creativity Phonte and Pooh and the soulful sample based production of 9th Wonder that drew comparisons in tenor and tone to predecessors such as groups from the collectives the Native Tongues and Soulquarians. Over 65 minutes and utilizing a concept used frequently in hip-hop, the album is presented through the lens of a radio station broadcast schedule, WJLR, presenting all of the tropes of terrestrial radio complete with skits and fictional disc jockeys which accompanied the album's tracks. While the album had no major singles or sales numbers to report, its legend has been boosted by their niche, but loyal fanbase that has followed them since the beginning. The album has been deemed an underground and indie hip-hop classic and the launching pad of a group that has had a successful, yet complicated two decades in the industry.Follow Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) Onlinehttps://linktr.ee/iamkinetikVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comCheck Out Our Clothing and Merch Shop and Cop Some Gear!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesPassion Weiss: The Oral History of The Lawn (by Chris "Kinetik" Mitchell)https://www.passionweiss.com/2022/03/24/the-oral-history-of-the-lawn/Albumism: Little Brother's Debut Album "The Listening" Turns 20 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/little-brother-debut-album-the-listening-album-anniversaryPitchfork: Little Brother "The Listening" Review https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/little-brother-the-listening/GQ: Little Brother Looks Back On 20 Years Of "The Listening" https://www.gq.com/story/little-brother-the-listening-album-20-yearsHipHopDX: Little Brother on 'The Listening' at 20 & Marauding For Earshttps://hiphopdx.com/news/little-brother-the-listening-20-year-intervew Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

J. Dilla is one of the most influential, respected, revered, lauded, and talked about producers ever. Before Dilla most beats were either straight or swung, Dilla disabled the quantize function and played the beat himself which gave it a feel that it was off kilter. This is basically the season of Questlove how much I have spoke about him, but he has said that Dilla is the greatest drummer of all time. Sadly we lost the physical form of J. Dilla to complications with Lupus and a rare blood disorder. Dilla was a founding member of the Slumvillage, the Soulquarians and the production group the Ummah. Dilla was truly one of a kind and his impact is felt and missed simultaneously. Check out this episode of hip hop history and check back next week as we dive into Donuts the album by Dilla. Thank you Dilla and thank you for listening to this episode of hip hop history please like, subscribe and leave a review where possible. Thank you and have a great day.
Things Fall Apart is the fourth studio album from The Legendary Roots Crew or The Roots. This was the first album that was released from the group called The Soulquarians which includes The Roots, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common and Jill Scott amongst others. This album would be the first of The Roots albums to go Gold and then would go platinum in 2013, as well as win them a Grammy for You Got Me featuring Erykah Badu and Eve co-writing by a then unknown Jill Scott. The album also was nominated for Rap Album of the Year at The Grammy's losing to Eminem's The Slim Shady LP. This album not only was in correlation with Erykah Badu and D'Angelo's most well known albums but also Common's Like Water For Chocolate. Check out this classic album by this legendary group. Thank you The Roots for everything you have contributed to hip hop more specifically this classic album. Thank you, and thank you for listening to this episode of hip hop history. Have a great day.
Make Me Believe in You'. This week's episode of Down to the Beat is kicked off with a conversation about the album "Super What?" by Czarface & MF Doom. We then talk about the history of The Soulquarian collective and their ties to Electric Lady Studios. The episode is then capped off with a short discussion about Trippie Redd's new single "Miss the Rage" featuring Playboi Carti and T-Pain's recent tweets regarding producers not getting enough credit for the hits of today.
Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli have known one another for decades. They’ve collaborated on full albums -- most notably the iconic Reflection Eternal -- and Hi-Tek was the most heavily featured producer on Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. This is all to say: When the usually-reticent Tek agreed to sit down for People’s Party with Talib Kweli, we knew it was going to be a great episode. If you love the Soulquarians era and count yourself as a fan of Black Star, you’re going to want to catch this one. Hi-Tek gets real and raw, shares stories about coming up with Kweli, and talks about shifting to the West Coast to work with Snoop. The discussion spans the careers of both Tek and Kweli and comes full-circle with discussions of current projects and future collaborations. This is an episode for true production heads. Because Hi-Tek is -- without a doubt -- one of the best that the culture has seen.

In this episode of People’s Party with Talib Kweli, Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh chop it up with the wildly talented and endlessly curious Questlove. The conversation spans Questlove’s career -- from bucket drumming in Philly to forming The Roots to launching OkayPlayer to taking a gig as Jimmy Fallon’s band leader. Kweli and Quest are close friends and it shows throughout the episode, as they recount stories from the “Soulquarian” era, early tours, and in-studio collaborations. The episode offers a fascinating look into one of the most creative minds working today -- a relentlessly eclectic musician who takes sincere joy in his craft.

Back up in this bitch again! Who knew that white folk got down with P-Funk hard? Governor Mike Dewine had Covid, then he didn’t, that’s the theme of this episode, it’s all over the place and wild AF. While reading another article we discover one of the sources we used has some issues so we delve into that. That led us to discussing Jaguar Wright’s claims about The Roots, Common and the Soulquarians in general. As we continue to discuss ain’t shit people, we add Ellen to the list. Subway has a McRib and Ant’s partner said we should discuss it so we did. But we also discussed other fast food knockoffs that outshone the original. Did y’all hear about this Marty Jannetty situation? Well strap in for a wild ride. Is Gabe a racist? His kid has concerns. Tee recounts tales of his home security. All of this leads to a bit of real talk, but real good talk. We of course, cap it off with another visit to the Reddit mean streets and ask, AITA? As we attempt to wrap it up we start discussing toys and Transformers, and Jurassic Park. This of course leads to us discussing science and books. Book chat spirals into Movie chat, seriously, by the time we wrap it up the show was supposed to have ended like 20-30 minutes before that but we got into a groove and it was to good to stop.

This week, we look at the effect the Akai MPC had on music production. We evaluate Roger Linn's genius in designing more user-friendly interfaces. We trace back its history to this day, with the rapid growth of the Maschine movement. In the second portion of this podcast, we talk about possibly the most important MPC user of all times: Detroit's J Dilla. We talk about how he used the MPC, how its limitations unlocked Dilla's creative genius, and we also talk about sampling and crate-digging as an art form.Support the show (https://delicatebeats.com/collections/all)

The Album: D'Angelo Voodoo (2000) Tall Black Guy, AKA Terrel Wallace, has been making beats and remixing artists like 79.5, Stro Elliot, and Moonchild, for a long time. Listen to any one of his songs and you'll understand why he's one of the best producers out there and why we were so excited to talk to him. It's no surprise that his personal heat rock (and ours) was "Voodoo" by D'Angelo. Making the album was no small feat. D'Angelo took a long break between albums to learn more about playing the guitar, and linked up with the Soulquarians to lay down some of the funkiest, most eclectic, and just plain hottest tracks of all-time. It took nearly 5 years to make, but the wait was worth it.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is a living link between the digital science of modern hip hop and the flesh-and-blood textures of vintage R&B. He's helped shape the sound of neo-soul with The Roots, the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late night show, and the Soulquarians with D’Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest and the late Jay Dee. In this lecture at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy, Questlove returned to the couch for a deep dive into drumming, Dilla and D’Angelo.

You've heard the lyrics of that legendary 5th Dimension song time and time again: "When the moon is in the Seventh House/ And Jupiter aligns with Mars/ Then peace will guide the planets/ And love will steer the stars." I should know because everytime I mention that I am born under the astronomical sign of Aquarius, someone is bound to sing that song. It never fails. Nevertheless it's a favorite of mine and as I count down the days to my 40th birthday, I wanted to feature some joints and jams from one of my favorite musical ensembles - The Soulquarians. Consisting of Questlove, Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, J Dilla, Q-Tip, Slum Village, Bilal, the Roots, and the man who I happen to share the same birth date with, D'Angelo. On this podcast of The Soul Brother Show - The Home of Heavy Soul and Raw Funk, it's all about an eclectic good time. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy. Tracklist: D'Angelo - Another Life Q-Tip - Feelin' Common w/Bilal - Funky For You Slum Village - Forth & Back The Roots - The Next Movement Mos Def - Close Edge Talib Kweli - Get By The Roots w/Cody ChesnuTT - The Seed 2.0 Bilal w/Mos Def and Common - Reminisce Raphael Saadiq w/D'Angelo - Be Here Erykah Badu w/Rahzel - Southern Gul Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty Q-Tip - Gettin' Up Erykah Badu - Bag Lady Common - Aquarius
