Rebel forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, seized Damascus on 8 December; Assad fled to Russia, ending his family's six-decade- rule. You were to re-read our article “France's support for Syrian transition hinges on respect for minority rights” and send in the answer to this question: France's outgoing Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot was quoted in the article. He noted that “Assad's fall is a ‘clear defeat for Moscow'”. Why? Why does Jean-Noel Barrot think that Assad's fall is a “clear defeat for Moscow”?The answer is, to quote our article: “… Russia now could lose access to military bases in Syria which allowed it to conduct operations in the Magreb and elsewhere on the African continent.”In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Debashis Gope from West Bengal, India: “How can we have peace amongst all people?” Do you have a bonus question idea? Heerlijk.
Donald Macleod meets professional musicians to get the performer’s eye view of Beethoven. During Beethoven’s life, great technical advances were being made to musical instruments such as the keyboard and the horn. It was also a period when virtuoso musicians of all kinds began to tour Europe and Beethoven was able to meet some of the greatest exponents of different instruments and learn from them. He was inspired to push the limits of his performers as never before, and his works continue to fascinate and challenge musicians today. In this episode, Donald Macleod meets with different professional musicians to get a performer's eye view of Beethoven’s music and the challenges it presents. Guests: Chi-chi Nwanoku (double bass), Rachel Nicholls (soprano), Adrian Bending (timpani), Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano), Sarah Willis (French horn).
