Aber was steckt eigentlich hinter diesem Format?
We are thrilled to have Dr. Shushan with us again this year. His body of work in the field of near-death studies is unrivaled on near-death experience is unrivaled. He is a historian of religions, an award-winning author, and the leading authority on near-death experiences and the afterlife across cultures and throughout history. His books include The Next World: Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife, Near-Death Experiences in Indigenous Religions, and Near-Death Experience in Ancient Civilizations (coming soon from Inner Traditions). His forthcoming titles include The Historical Anthology of Near-Death Experiences, and Mind Dust and White Crows: The Psychical Research of William James (both as editor). Dr. Shushan is a Visiting Research Fellow at University of Winchester's Centre for Death, Religion and Culture; Adjunct Professor of Thantaology at Marian University; and Research Fellow of the Parapsychology Foundation. He was formerly Perrott-Warrick Researcher at University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion; Scholar-in Residence at the Centro Incontri Umani (The Cross Cultural Centre), Ascona, Switzerland; and Honorary Research Fellow at the Religious Experience Research Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He has lectured at universities in the UK, Ireland, and Switzerland and has given numerous talks on his research in nine countries, and has appeared on the History Channel. Here's what leading scholars are saying about his work: “Gregory Shushan has produced the most important scholarly work on near-death experiences in the last thirty years. He describes the process by which, despite regular attempts to marginalize its power, the NDE has been perhaps the most important shaper of religious creativity in human history. This is a journey and an argument as fascinating and as engrossing as the social history of mankind itself.” -- Allan Kellehear, Clinical Professor, University of Vermont.“Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions is a tour de force. By comparing recorded cases from North America, Africa, and Oceania, Shushan presents a compelling argument for the centrality of near-death experiences to the development of religious ideas across time and culture. Any future discussions of NDEs and the origins of religion will need to take Shushan's major contribution into account.” -- Fiona Bowie, Research Affiliate, School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, Oxford University; and founder of Afterlife Research Center “Gregory Shushan's new book provides a uniquely insightful and provocative analysis of near-death experiences that documents their formative influence on worldwide beliefs about an afterlife. His ethnological perspective results in a more comprehensive understanding of NDEs than a purely biological or psychological model can provide, and suggests that afterlife beliefs are rooted not in culture but in the universal human experience of NDEs. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand NDEs and their role in society.” -- Bruce Greyson, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia.READ MORE: https://www.gregoryshushan.com/Dr. Shushan will be presenting at our 2024 Conference on Death, Grief and Belief, online Saturday August 24, 2024.

Sharing Insights Podcast: Exploring Permaculture, Homesteads, & Community in Costa Rica
This episode is with a dedicated community organizer living in the Osa Peninsula, Tricia Stapleton. Tricia shares her embodied wisdom with each question she answers. Relistening to this episode to prepare it for publication was a treat! I had a hard time selecting which portions of this interview to use for the 3-4 highlight reels I produce with every episode because there was SO MUCH amazing content. You're lucky to be listening to this episode right now. One of the many things that Tricia and I have in common is the responsibility we share as regenerative projects of not ignoring the socio-economic context we find ourselves in. Socio-cultural diversity as a vehicle for mutual aid, and the bridging of analog and digital solutions to community building are other topics that I enjoyed exploring with her. We cover a few programs Tricia has co-founded in the Osa Peninsula. Cooperativa Los Higuerones is a bioregional learning center in the southern zone of the Osa Peninsula, Gulfo Dulce watershed. Its focus is on promoting alternative economic, social, and environmental opportunities. From “stone soup socials”, to mutual aid work, emergency food boxes, a CSA program, a recycling program, and a locally operated farmers market… this multi-cultural local resilience organization, Higuerones, is doing it all! Through that cooperative has been born Manos Cambiatas, a community work-party initiative that you'll hear more about. Here's a video that they created highlighting the work of Manos Cambiatas. Be sure to listen to the end of the interview, where Trisha shares what they're birthing with the ReGenerOsa collective. Regenerosa has developed a tithing program to fund regenerative projects in local communities. Could you contribute 2.5% of something you're doing to support a community actively caring for 2.5% of the earth's biodiversity? This interview might just motivate you in that direction. If you got some value from this episode, share it with a friend, say something nice about the podcast on your favorite social media channel, or drop a donation off at ko-fi.com. I have more wonderful interviews like this waiting for the editors, and every little bit helps cover the production expenses. Thanks for sharing your time with us. Now, go and give that 2.5%... In this special episode in the ARA podcast series, Prof Christo Doherty of ARA speaks to three internationally acclaimed and award-winning artists about their creative research into the possibilities of the book as an artwork. Veronica Schapers, Robbin Amy Silverberg, and Julie Chen are showing a range of their artists books in a spell-binding new exhibition at the Jack Ginsberg Centre for the Book Arts housed in the Wits Arts Museum. Entitled "Creative Research: The Artists' Books of Schapers, Silverberg, and Chen", the exhibition runs till the 15th December. The reason I grabbed the opportunity to speak to these three artists, while they were in Johannesburg, is because creative research is central to their practice but in fascinatingly different ways. Through their diverse artists' books they explore the complexities of personal and inter-cultural positions, language, and meaning-making through being. Veronika Schäpers was born in Coesfeld, Germany. She was trained as a bookbinder for three years before she studying for a diploma in painting and books at the University of Art & Design in Halle, Germany. After a three months scholarship with the Centro del bel Libro, Ascona in Switzerland, followed by a nine months scholarship with Naoaki Sakamoto in Tokyo, she began her career in 1998 as a free-lance book artist and working from her own studio in Tokyo. In 2012, Schäpers moved back to Germany and now lives and works in Karlsruhe . In her practice, Veronica explores a wide range of materials that offer visual and tactile solutions through the sensual medium of the book. Robbin Amy Silverberg is the founder of both Dobbin Mill, a hand-papermaking studio, and Dobbin Books, an artists' book studio, both in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Princeton University with a BA Cum Laude in Art History in 1980 and began making her own paper in 1980. Since then Robbin has created great number of artists' books—both on her own and in collaboration with other artists, all over the U.S., Canada, Europe, and South Africa. Robin's books embody her research into paper as her preferred material and as a vehicle for the multisensory experience of touch, reading and the transfer of ideas. Julie Chen was born in Inglewood, California. She completed an undergraduate degree in printmaking at the University of California, Berkeley in 1984.[1] She subsequently became interested in book arts and got a degree in book arts from Mills College in 1989. She began teaching book arts at Mills College as an adjunct in 1996 and became an associate professor in 2010. Julie has achieved prominence by creating conceptually sophisticated works that combine traditional techniques, such as letterpress printing and hand bookbinding, with more modern technologies such as photopolymer plates and laser cutting. She is known for pushing the structural boundaries of the artist's book with a range of architectural and sculptural approaches. At one point you will also hear the voice of Jack Ginsberg himself, explaining the after-exhibition access that is possible for visitors to this unique collection of artists books, one of the most comprehensive in the world. Please note that this recording was done by myself with a single microphone in the Jack Ginsberg Centre. As a result, the sound quality is not great, but I hope the content is of sufficient interest to make listening to this special ARA podcast worthwhile. On today's episode we're joined by one of the UK's most successful singer-songwriters. He's collaborated with everyone from Kylie Minogue to Bob Dylan and Nile Rogers, and recently sold out Wembley Arena - we're joined today by the utterly delightful and extremely talented Jack Savoretti.Jack had a truly international upbringing, moving from London to Switzerland, and spending idyllic childhood summers in Portofino, Italy, where his father's family hail from as well as on a remote Bahamian island - it's a rather enviable childhood I have to say. It was a slow-burning rise to fame for Jack as a musician, who toured the UK for several years, all the while his fanbase grew and grew and it was his sixth album, Singing to Strangers, that finally hit the number one spot, and his most recent record, the sun-soaked and star-studded Europiana - which frankly couldn't be a better talking point for the podcast, as it was inspired by his European upbringing and life - that was also a chart-topper too and it was really interesting to hear the story behind that. This episode is a love letter to the Mediterranean as well as a few spots farther afield, but as the night's draw in here in England, I hope this injects a bit of sunshine into your day.Destination Recap:Liguria, Italy Formentera, SpainOxfordshire, EnglandLugano, SwitzerlandAscona, Switzerland Hotel Eden Roc, Ascona, SwitzerlandPortofino, ItalySan Fruttuoso, ItalyPierre Island, BahamasAbu DhabiSouth AmericaJack Savoretti's latest single Dancing Through The Rain which is taken from Europiana Encore, a special extended edition of his chart topping album, Europiana, is out now.If you'd like to hear more from the podcast don't forget to hit subscribe or if you use apple podcasts to hit follow so that a new episode lands in your podcast app each week, and if you're really enjoying it I'd be so grateful if you could leave a rating or review. Our Time: Searching for Soul in the 21st Century”. This is episode 9 of Paranormal Stories. This week the books are; 'THE NEXT WORLD Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife' by Gregory Shushan'UFOs Before Roswell: European Foo-Fighters 1940-1945' by Graeme RendallAs you may know I produce two podcasts, the past lives podcast and the Alien UFO Podcast and it is here that I combine the two. When I have a guests on my podcasts I read their books to research and work out questions for the episodes. When reading these books I always find such fascinating information which never makes it into the podcast and here I get a chance to give you a peek into the book.I did seek permission to record these extracts from the books and the authors kindly said yes.'THE NEXT WORLD Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife' by Gregory ShushanIn The Next World, historian of religions Gregory Shushan explores the relationships between extraordinary experiences and beliefs in life after death. He first shows how throughout history and around the world, near-death experiences have influenced ideas about the afterlife. Shushan also takes a deep dive into the problem of similarities and differences between NDE accounts. Not only do they vary widely, but so does a culture's way of responding to them and integrating them into their belief systems. In this book Shushan also compares NDEs with accounts of shamanic spirit journeys to afterlife realms, intermission states between reincarnations from people who remember past lives, and descriptions of otherworlds by souls of the dead communicating through mediums. Accounts of all these phenomena bear striking similarities to NDEs, though also have important differences. Examining them each in relation to the other results in a kind of reciprocal illumination, in which each type of extraordinary experience sheds light on the other.Drawing on over two decades of research into cross-cultural afterlife beliefs and extraordinary experiences, The Next World presents not only an accessible overview of Shushan's work, but also takes a bold new step in psychical research. By combining ideas and methods from a variety of disciplines – archaeology, anthropology, sociology, and the study of religions – Shushan's unique take on the issues leads to new understandings of them. Unlike any of these disciplines, however, Shushan also crosses over into metaphysics, philosophy, and parapsychology, considering the implications of the cross-cultural data for the survival hypothesis: Are NDEs and other extraordinary experiences actually glimpses into another world and a taste of the true spiritual reality? If so, what could this afterlife actually be like in light of all the diversity of accounts?BioGregory Shushan, PhD, is the leading authority on near-death experiences and the afterlife across cultures and throughout history. He is a Research Fellow of the Parapsychology Foundation, and was formerly Perrott-Warrick Researcher at University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion; Scholar-in Residence at the Centro Incontri Umani (The Cross Cultural Centre), Ascona, Switzerland; and Honorary Research Fellow at the Religious Experience Research Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He has lectured at universities in the UK, Ireland, and Switzerland and has given numerous talks on his research in nine countries, and has appeared on the History Channel.Dr. Shushan holds degrees in Religious Studies (University of Wales Lampeter), Research Methods for the Humanities, Egyptian Archaeology (University College London), and Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology (Birbeck College, University of London). His work has been generously supported by grants from the Perrott-Warrick Fund at Trinity College Cambridge, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the International Association for Near-Death Studies, the Cedar Creek Institute, the Alex Tanous Foundation for Scientific Research, the Parapsychology Foundation, the Society for Psychical Research, and by readers like you.https://www.amazon.com/Next-World-Extraordinary-Experiences-Afterlife-ebook/dp/B09W2Q3GT8/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1649499919&sr=8-1https://www.gregoryshushan.com/'UFOs Before Roswell: European Foo-Fighters 1940-1945' by Graeme RendallDuring the final six months of World War Two, a strange phenomenon known to US Army Air Force night-fighter squadrons as the “Foo Fighters” was witnessed by crews operating over western Germany. Mysterious lights were frequently reported, following their aircraft or sitting off their wingtips. These lights did not appear to show any hostile intent, although they often frightened aircrew, who thought they may have been German secret weapons. For many years, it has been believed that these mysterious wartime sightings started in November 1944.However, this is simply accepted wisdom, based on a false premise published in a December 1945 magazine article and then repeated in various books dealing with UFOs published since the 1950s.The true story of the “Foo Fighters” goes back much earlier than 1944, involving RAF aircrew operating over Germany and Italy. The nicknames for what they encountered were different, but the phenomenon they witnessed was almost certainly the same. Mysterious lights, "rockets" and "jets" were reported on a regular basis, with many of these events being listed in official records. These cases, plus others which may not have been reported to the military authorities at the time, are examined closely in this book.Various explanations have been suggested to explain the “Foo Fighters” and these are looked at in great detail. In the 1950s, several German “designers” came forward to claim that they had been personally involved with secret Nazi projects that they believed were the source of wartime sightings - and in some cases, post-war ones too. Their claims will also be studied in depth. The ”Foo Fighters” are a largely forgotten aspect of the UFO subject in the 20th Century, and this book is intended to address that lack of coverage. It also provides a wealth of information and detail on wartime German secret weapons programmes and bombing raids, so should appeal to readers with an interest in World War Two aviation who are looking for stories with a difference. The foreword to this book has been written by Sean Cahill, one of the witnesses involved in the infamous November 2004 US Navy "Tic Tac" case. I am most grateful to Sean for his contribution to my work.BioI have been interested in aviation for as long as I can remember. Starting off with model kits and books, I moved onto writing about aircraft for a local magazine in my early twenties, and then travelled around Siberia in the summer of 1992 looking for interesting Russian aeroplanes to photograph.I published my first book, "To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992", in 2021. "UFOs Before Roswell: European Foo-Fighters 1940-1945" was also released in August 2021 to much acclaim. There are some fascinating cases in this book that are being shared publicly for the first time. A third book dealing with the history of RAF Morpeth, a wartime aerodrome near where I live in Northumberland, England, was published in November 2021, and I have also released two volumes dealing with local aviation history in the county. The second book listed above relates to my other passion, Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP). You may know these better as UFOs! I have also written articles for The Debrief, UAP Media UK and Shadows Of Your Mind magazine, and support initiatives to bring more information about UAP into the public eye. I am a also one of the members of UAP Media UK.https://www.amazon.com/UFOs-Before-Roswell-Foo-Fighters-1940-1945-ebook/dp/B09DRBHH1Z/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1649504412&sr=8-1https://www.reivercountrybooks.com/http://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/alienufopodcasthttps://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

This episode will introduce you to the most in-depth research available to date on NDEs throughout history and across cultures... with some fascinating information about how those accounts have influenced religoius beliefs and cultural practices over time. Our guest Gregory Shushan PhD is the leading authority on near-death experiences in historical reports. He points out, among other things, that stories of NDEs over thousands of years have contributed to the establishment of religious beliefs, and conversely, those beliefs also influence what we experience in our NDEs. Gregory is a research fellow of the Parapsychology Foundation, and was formerly Perrott-Warrick Researcher at University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion; Scholar-in Residence at the Centro Incontri Umani (The Cross Cultural Centre), Ascona, Switzerland; and Honorary Research Fellow at the Religious Experience Research Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. In Nigeria Bachot conducted an orchestra of 16 people with whom he took part in the "Sokoto Fishing Festival". Due to political unrest in the country, he was forced to leave and went successively to Benin, Togo, Niger, Burkina and ended up in Abidjan. And now, Bachot has just release his new album entitled "Back To The Roots". But what inspired Bachot to compose the album Back To The Roots? After performing the Montreal International Jazz Festival 2013, Bachot decided to come out with a new album project. But the most important for him was to work with other experimented and expressifs musicians around the world. First of all, Bachot wanted to find a great Brazilian percussionist, because he had in mind to record and Afro Jazz Fusion Album. Bachot went to meet his friend Andre Bontems owner of Avalon Studio Brussels and told him his ambition. Andre Bontems after listening to Bachot said to him, I wanna show you something. He brought out a live video he recorded where was performing a wonderful Brazilian percussionist named ZE LUIS Nascimento , Bachot was blow out by the performance of this guy, and he said to Andre his friend, this is my man. The first piece of the puzzle was found. It is important to notice that ZE LUIS Nascimento perform often with Michel Legrand and many French great artists. Bachot started the recording in Paris at Bopcity studio with ZE LUIS Nascimento, where he recorded the percussions and some vocal parts of Essukud'am, Hey Ohohah with the participation of his nephew Ray Dikoumé. And after Paris Bachot flew away to Tallinn at Green Room Studio to record with the bass player Kareel Liive, the guitarist Paul Daniel, and the great Trombonist Eduard Akulin who did a tour with Freddy Cole the brother of Nat King Cole few years ago. And then back to Brussels where Bachot recorded lady Dunia Molina cristal voice parts . The mixing and mastering done in New York City, was handled by the 13 grammy awards winner Mike Makowsky. (Mike credits: Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, Gorillaz, Usher, Maxwell, John Legend, Kenye West, Kid Cudi, Jim Jones, Kelis, Nas, etc..) This album "Back To The Roots" is a mix of African Brazilian groove and Jazz. The final result is a pleasant and groovy Afro Jazz Fusion album. (Heavily recommended this genius to everyone...Amazing talent, said Mike Makowsky) All those who have listening to this album "Back to the roots" of Bachot are unanimous that it's an so happy and uplifting album, full of great spirit, émotion and happiness that capture your soul. (Anecdotally, when Mike Makowski was mixing with Bachot and the music began to sound like Bachot wanted, then Bachot smiled with pleasure, Mike looked the spirited smile and said, I feel that I am in the studio with Miles Davis, you really resemble like him a lot) January 2016, Bachot won "the Akademia Awards" Los Angeles for best Latin Song from his track "Samba Makossa", and in 2017 he won another award of best Afro soul with his track" A Muto" 2018-2020. As a scientist, Tom's insight into religion and psychology balances his worldview given that he matriculated through both the sciences and philosophy. He says, that as soon as he began to see the world through a hand-lens, he was sold on physics, biology, entomology, evolution and ecology, and vertebrate zoology, but landed squarely in biology. Tom's primary area of interest began in complex systems. Access to an electron microscope in the biochemistry lab opened up Tom's understanding of the microscopic world that is within, around, and through us. He defines “complex systems” and uses this interest to look at religion and psychology. Tom asks why no one can predict what the Dow Jones is going to do tomorrow?” Because the economy is a complex system. Tom's “naïve love of biology” was the attitude that bade him to leave the early movement in bioengineering, which he deemed as morally repugnant, and sent him onto a path of recollecting his interests in philosophy and religion primarily to the work of Carl Jung, James Hillman, and Henry Corbin. Tom's love for Hillman is expressed from his seeking psychological diversity and Corbin for his grounding in the imagination. Tom departed from reductive science because his brain began to feel like a machine, cranking out facts, and this landed him in the exploration of the imagination. With this in mind, Tom recognizes the battle within him between the “humanist” and the “scientist.” He believes on some level that adopting an easy pluralism as a means for us each to deal with our tendency toward fundamentalist thinking and behaving. He has been actively undermining the tendency for any human to be motivated by any fundamentalism – which both Henry Corbin and James Hillman do. Good on you, Tom! Bio: Tom graduated from Connecticut College in 1974 with a B.A. in philosophy, magna cum laude, with coursework in history and the history of art, and received the Susanne Langer Award for Achievement in Philosophy. Among the most long-lasting influences were my reading of Hegel, Heidegger, Ernst Cassirer and Erwin Panofsky, as well as the ideas and the teaching of historian F. Edward Cranz. In 1997 Tom resigned from my teaching position and my family moved to Maine. He then began writing in earnest. Tom's first essay on Corbin was among those selected to receive a John Templeton Foundation Exemplary Essay Award in the “Expanding Humanity's Vision of God” Program in 2000. The following year he was one of six invited speakers at the Eranos Conference in Ascona, Switzerland, where Corbin had been a leading figure for many years. Tom's first book on Corbin, the imagination and related themes was published in 2003, and others followed in 2005, 2007, 2012 and 2015. In 2004 he was invited for the first of a series of lectures for the Temenos Academy in London. In the summer of 2007 Tom was honored to be elected a Fellow of the Temenos Academy.
