First released as the final track on Dylan's seventh studio album Blonde on Blonde (1966), the song lasts 11 minutes and 23 seconds, and occupies the entire fourth side of the double album. The song was written by Dylan and produced by Bob Johnston. The recording session began at 6 pm on February 15, 1966, at Columbia Studio A, Nashville, Tennessee, but Dylan worked on the lyrics for several hours while the experienced Nashville session musicians hired to accompany him stood by. Four takes were recorded in the early hours of February 16; the final recording was released on Blonde on Blonde. The music is a waltz in 6/8 time.Some writers have concluded that the song refers to Joan Baez, although most agree that it was composed for Dylan's wife Sara Lownds. Dylan refers to writing the song for his wife in his track "Sara" (1975). Commentators have pointed to literary allusions in "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" which include William Blake's "The Tyger", Algernon Swinburne's "Dolores", and verses of the Bible.Dylan's lyrics polarized critics. On its release, several reviewers found them impenetrable, but rated the song favorably. Later writers often agree with this, praising the sound, dismissing the lyrics, and rating the song as amongst Dylan's best work.Dylan has never performed the song in concert.   Stu Levitan welcomes a special guest for a special topic on this day after Bob Dylan's 79th birthday. We're joined by The Rev. L. J. Sloman of the Last Exit Before the Freeway Church of God, as seen on WMTV's The Weekend Starts now with Ben Sidran, a/k/a UW graduate student Larry Sloman, a/k/a Ratso, to talk about a book, and album and a movie. The book is On the Road with Bob Dylan, his epic account of Dylan's 1975 tour, the Rolling Thunder Revue. The critically acclaimed album is Stubborn Heart, from which that brief snippet of Dylan's Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands was borrowed, and which includes 8 Ratso originals. The movie is Martin Scorcese's fascinating and fanciful Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story,” in which he has a featured role – as he did in Dylan's own movie about that tour, Reynaldo & Clara. As to Bob Dylan, he is, without question, the greatest singer-songwriter since Homer. And his live performances on that 1975 tour were among his most intense and electrifying in a 60-year career of intense and electrifying performances. As to Larry Sloman, he has had a career path I both envy and appreciate. A native New Yorker, he made phi beta kappa and graduated magna cum laude from Queens College in 1969, with a degree in sociology. To avoid the draft, he joined Volunteers in Service To America, the domestic peace corps, and was assigned to Milwaukee, where he worked with Father James Groppi's welfare mothers, and sometimes their daughters. After a year in VISTA, he accepted a fellowship from the National Institute for Mental Health and came to Madison for his Master's in Deviance and Criminology, which, as he notes has informed his work ever since. But more importantly, while here he also became music editor of the Daily Cardinal. Which helped him sell a story to Rolling Stone, after which he wrote for it some more, and then broke big news with a preview of Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album. From there, he got the Rolling Stone gig to cover the Rolling Thunder Revue– at least for a while -- and then wrote the book which Bob Dylan himself calls “the War and Peace of rock and roll.” Then five years as Editor-in-Chief of High Times magazine, six as Executive Editor of National Lampoon, and a literary career that now includes Steal This Dream: Abbie Hoffman and the Countercultural Revolution in America, Reefer Madness: The History of Marijuana in America, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of : America's First Superhero, and Thin Ice: A Season In Hell With the New York Rangers. And best-selling collaborations with radio personality Howard Stern, boxer Mike Tyson, magician David Blaine, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis, and Peter Criss of Kiss. Various side projects, including producing the award-winning music video of Dylan's song Jokerman. And now he's a recording artist, as well. As I said, envy and appreciate. At the height of his activity, McCoy played on over 400 recording sessions per year. He played guitar on Dylan's "Desolation Row", from the album Highway 61 Revisited; and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", from the album Blonde on Blonde; bass guitar (on all the tracks from Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding); keyboards, and drums plus several wind and brass instruments. For 19 years McCoy worked as music director for the popular television show Hee Haw and was a member of the Million Dollar Band, a group of all-star session musicians who performed on the show. The solo work of this Country Music Hall Of Fame member is contained on more than three dozen albums that Charlie has released over the past four decades.In 2009, McCoy was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with Roy Clark and Barbara Mandrell. In 1966 Bob Dylan told Columbia Records that he felt the quality of the material he had recorded for ‘Blonde on Blonde’ was too good to compress onto a single long playing record. Columbia agreed and the double album was born. This weeks podcast continues in the spirit of that seminal masterpiece. Well it’s long. Kevin Kilbane, Preston North End’s 73rd ranked past player and Ireland’s third most capped player joins us in studio mid bagel. On that 1966 record, one song, ‘Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands’ was so gut wrenchingly honest and poignant that it took up the entire side of one of the discs. Kevin’s opinions on the Declan Rice affair are as necessary listening in this arena as Bob’s Arabian drums where back then. My folks are spending a couple of months in Rottingdean down on the South coast, and after the Meursault, Rob St. John and Withered Hand gig at the Islington Assembly Hall in London on Tuesday I have come down to spend a few days with them, before pootling on back to Edinburgh tomorrow.This may not excuse but most certainly does explain the fact that the blog has been slightly more erratic than usual this week.  I've squeezed in posts where I can, but parents don't take all that kindly to you spending your entire visit buggering about on the internet, so I've had to cool it slightly.  Although I did force them to sit through an hour of my inbox yesterday, just so they would know how the internet makes me suffer.  Boo fucking hoo.Anyhow, Rottingdean is very near Brighton, which I visited for the first time for the Great Escape this Spring, so it was sort of nice to be back, in an odd way.
