In this mid week minisode I catch up with my good friend Lyndal Hunt. Lyndal introduces the concept of the "safety trap", and becoming aware of feeling so good that we start to neglect the ongoing work required to maintain sobriety. She emphasises the importance of vigilance and proactivity, even during the good times, as this is when the risk of relapse can be at its highest.Recovery is an ongoing process and that allowing complacency to set in can be detrimental.Consistent self-care practices and coping strategies are paramount in maintaining long-term well-being. We chat about the significance of sticking to your daily practice to stay on track. Even when you are on holidays!!!Recognising warning signs is crucial in preventing a potential relapse. Lyndal provides insights into being aware of shifts in mood, behaviour, or thought patterns. By taking action early on, individuals can prevent a full-blown relapse and get back on track towards recovery. We also discuss the importance of leaning on friends, family, support groups and your sober gang to stay connected. We touch upon the need for a mindset shift - viewing recovery as a continuous process rather than an endpoint. Embracing the idea of a lifelong journey in recovery can help you maintain focus and dedication and avoiding the trap of complacency. The book Lyndal mentioned is Nicole Lapera, How To Do The Work. We like to think that our personal safety and the safety of our loved ones is something that other people — law enforcement, school administrators, social media moderators — will take care of for us. My guest today, Spencer Coursen, would say that while this mindset may help us feelsafe, it's actually when we feel the most safe, that we're in the greatest danger. Spencer — who's a combat veteran and a threat management expert — calls this paradox "the safety trap," and he's the author of a book of the same name. Today on the show, Spencer shares the factors that can put us in the safetytrap, and ways to escape it. We discuss how an avoidance mindset and a reliance on false authority can put us in greater danger, how the run-hide-fight rubric for responding to an active shooter has been misapplied, and how being too polite can get you killed. From there we turn to ways you can take responsibility for your own safety, including knowing the warning signs that someone may take violent action and staying physically fit. We also discuss what to do if people are sending you potentially threatening messages online.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Article: What to Do in an Active Shooter SituationAoM Podcast #513: Be Your Own BodyguardPodcast #688: Protection for and from HumanityRadio Lab: No Special DutyConnect With Spencer CoursenThe SafetyTrap WebsiteSpencer on LinkedInSpencer on Twitter

My special guest is author and security expert Spencer Coursen here to discuss why we must take responsibility for our own personal safety. Get his book Safety Trap: A Security Expert's Secrets for Staying Safe in a Dangerous World on Amazon. Threat management expert Spencer Coursen offers proactive strategies to protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of hostile encounters and emergency situations in The Safety Trap: A Security Expert's Secrets for Staying Safe in a Dangerous World. Despite what the news and social media would have you believe, we have never lived in a safer time than we are now. Unfortunately, we live under a false sense of security enforced by authorities that only alleviates fears without reducing risk. We have placed our personal safety, and our responsibilities of guarding it, into the hands of people trained only to respond to crises, not actively prevent them. Our blind faith in institutions to protect us has only dulled our natural survival instincts. The truth is that when we feel safest is actually when we are in the most danger. This is the paradox of The Safety Trap. When you don't expect danger, you simply fail to see the signs that something bad is about to happen. But the signs are always there, and staying safe is about training yourself to see them. In easy-to-implement methods of maintaining vigilance, assessing risk, and taking preventative measures, you'll discover how to be alert without anxiety and know how to best protect and defend yourself on the job, in school, in public places, at home, and online. With Coursen's simple formula of Awareness + Preparation = Safety as your guide - as well as real world examples of managing threats - you will learn how to develop the skills and confidence to reclaim your own security and avoid The Safety Trap. Hanno Lustig is a professor of finance at Stanford University, and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Hanno joins David on Macro Musings to discuss his work on dollar safety, safe assets, convenience yields, and more. More specifically, Hanno and David discuss the dollar dominance in global financial markets, how the US's status as the world's safe asset provider reinforces its exorbitant privilege in money markets, whether the countercyclical demand for safe assets can help explain why US inflation has been so low this past decade, how years of low interest rate policy might have contributed to the growing wealth gap, and much more. Education can help people to be prepared without paranoia, but how do you teach safety without causing fear? There are specific things to be aware of in an extraordinary situation like an active shooter that can fundamentally change the outcome. Today's guest is Dr. Kathleen Kiernan. Dr. Kiernan is the founder and CEO of Kiernan Group Holdings, Chair of Emeritus and the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, and an adjunct faculty member of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School. As a 29-year veteran of Federal Law Enforcement, Dr. Kiernan serves as a subject matter expert in strategic thinking, strategy development, and facilitating critical incident management exercises for senior leaders across government and private sector organizations. She is the founder of Preparedness Without Paranoia which provides an opportunity to use a lifetime of service and earned experience at the extremes of human behavior to help others invest in their own security and preparedness. When they teach skills early, they can last a lifetime and can literally save lives. Show Notes: [1:21] - Dr. Kiernan has spent her entire life in or supporting law enforcement. Her experience has given her understanding of human behavior. [3:04] - Dr. Kiernan recommends the book called The Safety Trap by Spencer Coursen and shares a story from it to illustrate how children are not prepared by their parents. [4:39] - There's not one single event that interested Dr. Kiernan about preparedness, but rather her multitude of experiences in law enforcement. [7:03] - Regarding an active shooter situation, there is a series of actions to take. [8:18] - Preparedness Without Paranoia educates children on these actions they can take in a way that is developmentally appropriate. [9:18] - Civics is not a class taught anymore. Preparedness Without Paranoia uses current and recent events to educate. [10:33] - The program is written by parents and educators for parents and educators of primary school aged children. [11:58] - Dr. Kiernan's program teaches a preparedness mindset that applies to many different types of events. [13:01] - You are responsible for your own security. [14:20] - Communication is the first major teaching point for children in Preparedness Without Paranoia. [15:41] - Although active shooters are statistically rare but devastating, there are more common events in domestic violence and abuse that children learn to communicate about. [17:19] - To build trust with kids is to be part of their adventure. What are they into? [19:32] - Dr. Kiernan and Chris discuss preparedness kits and checklists and getting kids involved. [22:10] - Have the discussions of why each item goes into the preparedness kit and introduce the idea of going to a shelter in times of natural disasters. [24:06] - Dr. Kiernan shares a realization she made that preparedness can be simple. [27:30] - One of the most common and vexing to teach about is human and sex trafficking. [28:54] - Using the example of an Olympic athlete who spoke up about sexual abuse as a child. Communication is key. [30:27] - Some of the educational resources on Preparedness Without Paranoia's website surround good decision making and thanking community heroes. [31:20] - Preparedness Without Paranoia runs on donations. All donations go directly to resource production. You can contribute HERE. [32:22] - In addition to donations, Preparedness Without Paranoia is in need of authors and illustrators. [33:18] - All resources are free and available on the website. On this week's podcast SOFREP senior editor and SOFREP Radio host Steve Balestrieri talks with Spencer Coursen author of the Safety Trap and professional security expert. The two discuss personal security and safety and how we can achieve them in our everyday lives. After all, an informed society is a safe society. Spencer highlights the important difference between safety and security and how a wrong perception of the former may lead to a compromise of the latter. He points out that probably the most dangerous time during a security event is not at its beginning but at its end. This is because as an event unfolds the window of opportunity to escape gets smaller while the confidence of the attacker increases. Further, Spencer explains how regardless of circumstances, the number-one factor of target selection by a perpetrator is the likelihood of success. Perpetrators will go after the weakest. Therefore, the more you're promoting your protective posture the least likely you'll be made a target. The pair talks about the five Ds of home security: Deter, Detect, Deny, Delay, Defend Importantly, Spencer explains why "sheltering in place" and "run-hide-fight" approaches in many cases don't make sense. Nevertheless, his message isn't that we should live in constant fear, but that we should be vigilant and aware. SOFREP recently reviewed The Safety Trap and highly recommends it to our audience. You can purchase the book here or at your favorite bookstore. Tune in to a very informative and eye-opening episode of SOFREP Radio. Hey ya'll….here I am again, just….totally gushing to you about the amazing time I had at CrimeCon2021 in Austin, TX! As I said in last week's episode, I was able to do some amazing interviews and meetups while I was there. Last week, I shared the interview I did with Karlee Bodine, whose Mother, Karen Bodine, was brutally murdered in 2007 in what is a STILL UNSOLVED cold case….so be sure to listen to that episode. And now, in this episode I'm shifting gears a little bit and sharing my interview with Spencer Coursen, which I also did live at CrimeCon. This interview deviates from my normal discussion of murder mysteries and cold cases, and we were able to share a bit more lighthearted conversation, which was really nice. So, Spencer recently released his new book, called The Safety Trap. In this book, Spencer discusses the fact that, although the times we live in are truly safer than ever, that presumed safety, can also give us a FALSE sense of security. Topics of the book range from home security options, to keeping your kids safe, and he urges ALL of us not to depend on OTHERS for own safety, BUT, he shows the everyday person ways to shoulder that responsibility ourselves. Spencer's CrimeCon sessions were informative, and entertaining… he's actually a pretty funny guy – and he kept the CrimeCon audinces totally engaged with his real-world, relevant advice and anecdotes. If you missed him at CrimeCon 2021 in Austin, you'll DEFINITELY need to catch him at CrimeCon 2022, in Vegas. So, without further adieu, here's my interview…with Spencer Coursen, security expert and author of The Safety Trap, in stores now. We are never in danger more than when we feel safe. "The Safety Trap is a benchmark safety and security reference for everyone! Like all great U.S. Army Rangers, he is leading the way with deliberate passion and experience." -Clint Emerson, retired Navy SEAL, #1 New York Times bestselling author of 100 Deadly Skills, and the founder of Escape the Wolf, LLC, which focuses on crisis management for global companies. Spencer Coursen is one of the world's top experts in threat management. He has developed and led security plans for numerous major celebrities, sports stars, and corporate executives. His most important lesson for everyone to retain, regardless of your status, is this: you are never more in danger than in those moments when you feel you are safest. That is the root of his new book, THE SAFETY TRAP: A Security Expert's Secrets for Staying Safe in a Dangerous World (St. Martin's Publishing Group; on sale May 18, 2021; $28.99). What is a safety "trap?" It's a false sense of security that occurs when fear has abated but risk remains. The world we live in has never been more dangerous and our well-being more precarious. This is the book to walk everyone through the necessary steps to protect themselves, their loved ones, and colleagues, by being aware of realistic risks - and more importantly - being prepared for them. Don't take anything for granted or let your guard down. In other words, to be safe don't feel safe. What happens to the athlete or celebrity when they stir up a media frenzy? The boundaries of family, friends and the work place then become blurred and rumors ran rampant. The celeb must verify those around them as well as trust others. For a politician, one of the worst things they can hear is "I used to be your biggest fan." More than just words, the politician needs to see if that is a threat versus just an expressed opinion. For those in international diplomacy, they often work in foreign lands with non-permissive environments. If things go badly, the diplomat has to surround themselves with proactive intelligence.

In 2016, Phoenix-resident Raymond McLeod murdered his 30-year-old girlfriend, Krystal Mitchell, while they were visiting friends in San Diego. The scary-AF-looking heavily tatted ex-Marine bodybuilder then thought he could blend in seamlessly if he fled to South America ... and unfortunately, he may have been right. Or, people there don't follow true crime. He's managed to escape capture for five years and the U.S. Marshals Service recently placed him on their Most Wanted List with an unprecedented reward of $50,000 for anyone with information leading to his arrest. After telling Mitchell's story and being even more convinced dating is a complete hellscape, Amanda and Jenna invited on security expert and author Spencer Coursen (www.coursensecuritygroup.com), whose first book "The Safety Trap" hits shelves May 18. As a nontoxic male whose job it is to keep people safe, Coursen offers up some smart takeaways on how to avoid or get out of relationships we know are rife with danger.
