From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
"We think we're so different across our communities. We may come from a different country. We might work in different jobs. We might work the land, or work in tech, but we're not all that different —we're human,” says Brian Muegge of the divisions so prevalent in society today. “There really needs to be a better way to connect across the urban-rural continuum. I hope it's through food. and I hope it can be around natural resource conservation." Ikigai is a Japanese word that means "a reason for being". It's a concept that refers to something that gives a person a sense of purpose and joy. Brian Muegge has found his ikigai. A 31 year old with a deep passion for the environment, he has found his purpose in working to steward the planet we are lucky to call home. Growing up in a tech focused community in northern California, Brian always felt like a fish out of water. Instead of following in the path of his father who was a semiconductor engineer, he found himself drawn to the natural world. A fan of Steve Irwin and others, he had his share of pets. "My mother was not particularly good at saying no," he says with a smile. But it was when he accepted a gift of two, fertilized emu eggs and an incubator from a relative that he would test his mother's resolve.A biology major at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, Brian studied the habitat of the yellow-bellied marmot, a research project that earned him the moniker "Marmot Man". He now works with an organization called Salmon Safe, a non-profit organization in the Pacific Northwest that works with West Coast farmers, developers, and other environmentally innovative landowners to reduce watershed impacts. As you listen to this episode, consider:How much do you know about the environment in which you live? Where does your water come from? What birds build their nests in the trees? If you live in a city, what is the impact of city life on the natural world?Take a field trip to a local park or natural setting. Use your senses. Spend some time observing the environment. Read up on the environmental issues facing your community. Consider getting involved in a river clean up or collecting signatures for a local environmental effort. You can learn more about Salmon Safe here.Do you know someone who has a story to tell? Megan Bartholomay, our Froggy Wine Specialist from Republic National Distributing is back with another episode of Wine Wednesday. Follow Megan @fargos.winest This week's wine: Willamette Valley Vineyards Bernau Block Pinot Noir 2016 Winemaker Notes Ruby in color, concentrated aromas of bramble fruit, mint, cedar and graphite emerge and lead to a silky palate featuring jammy notes of blackberry and cherry cobbler accented by dried herbs and minerality flavors. The firm, rustic tannins and lively acidity frame the ample palate and the finish extends far beyond the sip. A combination of determination and extraordinary people has brought Willamette Valley Vineyards from a bold idea to one of the region's leading wineries, earning the title "One of America's Great Pinot Noir Producers," from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The “budwood” of Willamette Valley Vineyards began long before its founding in 1983 by vintner Jim Bernau. His Dad was hired by a California winemaker to secure the first winery license in Oregon since Prohibition. Jim's Dad allowed him small tastes of Richard Sommer's wine, lighting a path that led Jim from home winemaking to studies at UC Davis and eventually Beaune, France. In 1983, Jim cleared away an old pioneer plum orchard in the Salem Hills and hand-watered his first plantings using 17 lengths of 75' garden hose. Jim's vision of organizing the support of wine enthusiasts to build a winery that would produce world-class wines through shared ownership has resulted in more than 16,000 owners. The winery's Common (WVVI) and Preferred (WVVIP) are traded on the NASDAQ. The winery sources all of its barrel-aged Pinot Noir from its estate vineyards and practices environmentally sustainable farming. All of the vineyards have been certified sustainable through LIVE (Low Impact Viticulture and Enology) and Salmon-Safe programs since 1997. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to another episode of The Everyday Wine Aficionado Podcast! Today, we are delving into the world of spirits with Erik Chapman! Erik has extensive experience in distilled spirits and fermented beverages, spanning multiple tiers of the industry from production and design to policy and compliance. In his current role, Erik manages production and packaging — and is helping to usher in the next chapter of NEFT. He is responsible for scaling NEFT to meet growing demands while maintaining the ultra-premium quality of the ingredients and final vodka, and unique custom packaging. He joins NEFT from the craft world having worked as a distiller and brewer as well as a consultant for wineries and cideries. With over 15 years in the industry, he has created hundreds of unique and successful formulas for a range of brands including core SKUs and white-label options for major retailers such as Trader Joe's and Kroger. He currently resides in his native Pacific Northwest with his family. He enjoys playing around with the beverage recipes — distilling and cocktails — in his free time. Let's dive into his story 00:32 - 07:36] Eric Chapman on NEFTT Vodka and the Future of Craft Spirits Erik Chapman is the Chief Operating Officer of NEFT Vodka. He is responsible for scaling NEFT to meet growing demands, maintaining the ultra-premium quality of the ingredients, and developing unique custom packaging. Chapman started his career in beverage alcohol on the on-premise side, owning and operating a craft cocktail bar in Seattle. He then sold the business after he started distilling and brewing. Erik add that He was distilling and brewing for Capitol Hill's Brewery & Distillery. [07:36 - 15:00] Sustainable Vodka Made with Local and Mineral-Rich Ingredients That process starts with agriculture that process starts with a grain that is typically considered a peasant grain rye. Rye is different in Europe than it is in the US, and Erik has worked with both There are different grades of rye, and some can be used to make vodka. Erik likes sourcing things from dry-farmed. Here in the US that is called Salmon Safe certified. Organic farming doesn't make a huge difference to me on the land, but it does create better sustainability for workers and the community. [15:00 - 23:04] Neft Vodka Becomes Trending Beverage in Kansas City It has been selling well in Europe and India but struggles to find a foothold in the United States. NEFT is trading up, encouraging customers to trade up from lower - quality vodka options. [23:05 - 31:22] NEFT Spirits: Just, You Know, That Craft Spirit in There The Company is positioned as a premium spirit with a craft spirit feel, focusing on quality ingredients and filtration to produce a smooth, flavorful drink. NEFT produces a variety of spirits, including neutral ethanol burn vodka and gin. For those interested in learning more about spirits, NEFT recommends looking for local resources or taking classes offered by American Distilling Institute.
