"Benefitting pollinators" is a phrase that gets used a lot, especially in gardening circles. While most of us will agree with the sentiment, what does it mean in practice? How does one "benefit" pollinators in their community? There are a lot of great ways to do this, especially when it comes to native plants, but finding good, digestible information can be overwhelming. Thankfully organizations like Pollinator Partnership make learning how to help pollinators much easier. Join me and Bee Friendly Gardening Coordinator Sara Wittenberg as we discuss all the great resources available for those of you looking to be more friendly to pollinators. Sara Wittenberg on Pollinators and How to Build a Pollinator Garden Pollinator Week is June 17-23, 2024. Without pollinators, we wouldn't have food, making pollinators an essential link in the food system. You, as a gardener or farmer, have a role to play here. Gardener and biologist Sara Wittenberg talks with podcast host Lisa Munniksma about how and why we should be caring for our pollinators, including how to build a pollinator garden. Learn about the Pollinator Partnership nonprofit and the work they're doing to protect pollinators and prevent habitat loss, from educating gardeners and farmers to working on policies and supplying research grants. Sara may surprise you as she reveals who all of our pollinators are—not only honey bees, for sure! More than 85% of U.S. households have outdoor living space, and Sara points out that even container gardens planted with pollinator habitat can make a difference! Hear about various pollinator initiatives happening in Arkansas and beyond that you can become involved in: the Project Wingspan effort to make native ecotype seeds more available to land stewards, NRCS programs to connect biologists with landowners for free advice and potential funding assistance, and all that the Pollinator Partnership offers. Sara explains the Bee Friendly Gardening program that she manages, which includes helping people learn how to build a pollinator garden. You can join the program to help them reach their goal of 1,000 Bee Friendly Gardeners by the end of 2024! Sara lets us in on a new program—the first time she's mentioned it to the public—the Bee Friendly Gardening badge system. Harkening back to your scout days, you can earn up to six badges to show your pollinator prowess. For listeners growing on a commercial level, Bee Friendly Farming is an actual certification program that allows Bee Friendly Farmers to use the logo on their packaging. Keep listening to learn about Sara's own native-plant garden in her suburban Arkansas backyard. Milkweed, asters, black-eyed Susans, phlox and more turn her small outdoor space into a palette of colors throughout the seasons. Keep listening for Sara's best advice for how to build a pollinator garden on your own land, backyard or balcony. (Hint: The Pollinator Partnership's garden recipe cards can help get you started.) In today's episode, Jeff and Becky chat with Chris Hiatt, the President of the American Honey Producers Association (AHPA). AHPA, with a history dating back to its establishment in 1969, has been a cornerstone of the beekeeping community. Their mission has always revolved around advocating for beekeepers and the honey industry, and they've consistently upheld this commitment. The AHPA has played a pivotal role in advancing the beekeeping industry, with a primary focus on the needs and concerns of all beekeepers, from the hobbyist, to the commercial and sideline beekeeper. They work tirelessly with organizations promoting bee health, research and awareness, such as the Honey Bee Health Coalition, Bee Informed Partnership, Project Apis m., and Pollinator Partnership. (All of whom have been guests on this podcast!) AHPA is also deeply involved in honey promotion and marketing. They understand that creating a strong demand for honey and honey-related products is essential to support the livelihoods of beekeepers. Through collaborations with industry partners (such as the National Honey Board) and various initiatives, they work diligently to ensure that the efforts of beekeepers are rewarded fairly. Additionally, AHPA is actively engaged in honey standards and advocacy, working to ensure that the quality of honey products is maintained, and that beekeepers' interests are well-represented on regulatory fronts. Listen as we sit down with Chris Hiatt to gain insights into the important work being done by the American Honey Producers Association. His wealth of experience and expertise as President of the organization provides valuable perspectives on the current state and future of beekeeping. Dr. Kelly Kulhanek recently moved to Pullman, WA., where she has started her work there on assisting with the Asian Giant Hornet research. In addition to this she is working with the research on indoor wintering of honey bees for commercial beekeepers. All of this will help her with her new role as extension specialist for WSU. In today's episode, Kelly talk with Kim and Jeff about the current status of the Asian Giant Hornet in Washington State and the steps state beekeepers can do to prepare for the possibility this of invasive pest. Additionally, WSU has received multiple grants to research all the aspects of the indoor wintering of honey bee colonies in refrigerated warehouses. Kelly is working on this research. So far, the results have demonstrated a clear benefit, so much so, many large commercial beekeepers have already started building and renting warehouse space to house their bees over the winter. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Kelly. This week also kicks off Pollinator Week. Pollinator Partnership worked to get the week designated to celebrate all the benefits pollinators bring the environment. Pollination is the movement of pollen from the male parts of the flower to the female parts of the flower. It facilitates seed formation and fruit formation. Pollination happens in different ways for different types of plants: wind, gravity, and even with the help of animals. Dr. Lora Morandin is the Western Canada Program Manager at the Pollinator Partnership. She has been doing research on bees and pollination since 1997, based on interest in native pollinator conservation and sustainable agriculture. She has consulted for government and industry on diverse ecological topics and is passionate about finding ways for production and conservation to co-exist in a healthy and sustainable environment. What better way to start Pollinator Week than to get the latest info on everything Pollinator from Kelly Rourke, Executive Director of Pollinator Partnership, and Miles Dakin, the Coordinator of Pollinator Partnership's Bee Friendly Farming program. This week's program also marks the beginning or Beekeeping Today Podcast's FOURTH year! Our first program way back then was with members of the Pollinator Partnership organization and we're at it again with them. It's been a good relationship each year. Kelly shares a lot of what this group is doing during the 15th year of Pollinator Week. She discusses the new poster, this year's t-shirt, how to get your Governor to produce a Proclamation Supporting Pollinator Week in your state, and this year's virtual congressional briefings from the group on the state of protecting pollinators, plus the announcements sent to the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Administrator of EPA. They are also sponsoring a cookbook, an announcement page on their web page that viewers can post their local events on and several FB Live Events this week. Miles discusses his role with the Bee Friendly Farming program, including what it takes to get certified as a BFF, how many BFF farms there are, and being a BFF Supporter that beekeepers can take advantage of. All of this for supporting native and honey bees, but all are also very good marketing tools for growers and sellers. The Poster this year is focused on BFF, with native plants, bees, flies, beetles and the habitat they need, including continuous blooms, pesticide responsibility and clean water. Solar arrays are becoming pollinator friendly too, and supporting pollinator friendly planting under them is good for everybody, and a lot better to look at. With National Pollinator week next week, we caught up with staff at Pollinator Partnership (P2) to learn about what's happening to celebrate the week, but also to catch up on growing P2 initiatives; Bee Friendly Farming and the Pollinator Stewards program.
Today we are joined by two of the leading pioneers in apiary (beekeeping) sciences and how fungi are being applied to help fight off pests and support the immune systems of the vital honeybee. Fungi have shown up time and time again as a promising companion to improve our relationship with the planet as consumers, and today's topic is a heavy reckoning with honeybee colony collapse. We first discuss how we rely on honeybees for the incredible contribution they make to wildlife biodiversity and modern agriculture. Jennifer and Nick then get into the weeds of the many hardships that these bee colonies are facing and the detrimental impacts that are already happening. Inspired by Paul Stamet's observation of bees foraging on the mushrooms bed at Fungi Perfecti, Jennifer and Nick's lab have worked on a number of mushroom extracts for honeybee longevity. Additionally, they have pioneered some the important work of combating varroa mites with a well known soil dwelling fungus and mycopesticide — metarhizium anisopliae.Show notes:WSU Bee Lab: http://bees.wsu.edu/Article featuring Jennifer & Nick: https://www.goodfruit.com/researchers-look-to-fungi-to-help-honeybees/Beeinformed: https://beeinformed.org/The Pollinator Partnership: https://www.pollinator.org/Project Apis m.: https://www.projectapism.org/https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15r3xEFrI-iQ4azQgeCTmgKVJmotUm5OO?usp=sharing
Pollinator Partnership’s Bee Friendly Farming programs encourages and rewards growers for taking steps to improve pollinator health on farms. We hear about some new features of the program and how people can get involved.
Bee Friendly Farming has a good friend in Ron Bitner, Co-Chair of this Pollinator Partnership program. Ron runs Bitner Winery near Boise Idaho in Treasure Valley and for 40 some years was involved in non-apis bee management for pollination. Bee Friendly Farming has between 800 – 900 Bee Friendly Farmers, who practice reducing chemical use and use a whole row of holistic farming practices that improves the health of their soil and provides forage for bees. Ron’s goal is to double or even triple the number of BFFs so there’s even more out there for bees and pollinators. BFF are more or less self-regulated, but do have to report chemical use, acres covered, and the cover crops used to meet Bee Friendly Farming certification. Their newest adventure is working with almond growers to take advantage of the bare ground in orchards with a program called Qcify. You know I love bringing you the wisdom of successful entrepreneurs who have - so to speak - already made it, but I also think there is so much value in learning from entrepreneurs who are actively working in the trenches to build their business. I recently got to chat with my sweet friend, Lauren Strain, a 29 year old single mom and founder of newly launched company, “Pollumination", a collection of eco-chic candles + ceramics. Lauren actually created a few custom tumblers for me before, and besides the fact that her products and packaging are so beautifully made, she also has a huge heart for giving back. A portion of all her proceeds goes to the Pollinator Partnership in San Francisco, California to support bee conservation. Lauren shares with us the hardest parts of transitioning from a service based business as a photographer to now a products based business, why she chose to make giving back a key element of her business model from the beginning, and how to keep growing + investing back into your business, even when you're self-funding everything and not turning a profit yet.P.S. Pollinators are critical for food production and make the natural world bloom. Unfortunately, bees, butterflies and even bats, now face a myriad of threats from pathogens to pesticides. We talk with Laurie Adams, CEO of the Pollinator Partnership, about strategies to promote pollinator health.
Sabrina Hill fills in for Mike Adams this week. In today's show she talks with Brian Winnekins about their upcoming presentation on working with the media. She also visits with Val Dolcini of Pollinator Partnership about monarch health, and Harrison Weber with the North Dakota Soybean Council about a recent visit with Mexican soybean buyers.
“Benefits of Insect Pollination to Confection Sunflowers Differ Across Plant Genotypes” with Dr. Rachel Mallinger. Sunflowers are a hallmark of an American summer. They’re grown for beauty, but they are also important industrial crops in America, grown for sunflower oil, for fresh eating (of the seeds), and for bird seed. And although we’ve slowly bred them to be more independent of pollinators, sunflowers still partner with bees. And not just honey bees. More often, they partner with native bees. Did you know honey bees aren’t even native to the U.S.? And while just as charismatic in their own way, native bees might not fit the usual description of a bee that we imagine. Most U.S. bees don’t have a colony, don’t have a queen, and don’t have a hive that sits in a tree. And yet these mostly underground, solitary dwellers are the ones that are so important for sunflowers (and many flowers). Dr. Mallinger’s research looks at the fascinating relationship between these species – the confection sunflower and native bees. She wants to be able to measure this relationship. How do sunflowers benefit from pollination by bees? Tune in to learn more about Dr. Mallinger’s research and to find answers to these questions: What are the differences between a honey bee and a native bee? Why should we care about native bees? What is Dr. Mallinger’s favorite type of bee? How does pollination increase the yield of sunflowers? If you would like more information about this topic, today’s paper is available here: dx.doi.org/10.2135/cropsci2017.03.0148 It will be freely available from 20 July to 3 August, 2018. Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, birds and other animals bring us one in every three bites of food we eat. Pollinators form the underpinnings of healthy and sustainable ecosystems that support a multitude of wildlife. For years, pollinator populations have been in decline and this decline is attributed most severely to a loss in feeding and nesting habitats. In addition, environmental degradation, the misuse of chemicals, pests and disease, and now climate change are all contributing to shrinking and shifting pollinator populations.Val Dolcini, formerly the Administrator of the USDA Farm Service Agency, is a fifth generation Californian, a passionate supporter of American farmers and ranchers, and a firm believer in the promise of our nation's rural places. He is currently the President & CEO of the Pollinator Partnership, an organization dedicated to the support and protection of pollinators throughout North America. This year, Val and his team have collaborated with Blondie's Debbie Harry to launch a new campaign called BEE Connected, designed to raise awareness about the decline in the global population of bees, as well as the insects' importance in the food chain and Earth's ecosystems. The initiative ties in with Blondie's new studio album, Pollinator , and debuted in conjunction with the 10th annual National Pollinator Week in June. To raise money for the campaign, limited-edition "Pollinator/Save the Bees" T-shirts are being sold at Blondie.net/beeconnected. The website also features links to various organizations that support bee conservation. To find out more about Val and what you can do to save the bees, visit www.pollinator.org
We offer two features on today's show: Protecting Pollinators (start time: 0:58): Hills, prairies and gardens are neon green and in full bloom. A pollinator's paradise, at least it should be. Birds, bees, butterflies, beetles and other pollinators rely on the nectar from flowering plants. We humans rely on them; roughly one out of every three bites we take comes from food that would not exist if not for pollinators. National Pollinator Week is June 19 - 25. It will celebrate pollinators and promote how humans can help protect them. Vicki Wojcik, research director at Pollinator Partnership, an organization that focuses on conservation, scientific research and education aimed at preserving pollinators, talks with host Susan Moran. Resources: Bee Safe Boulder (People and Pollinators Action Network), Colorado State Beekeeper Association, and Butterfly Pavilion. Testing Drinking Water (start time: 14:00): Two years ago Flint, Mich., turned the issue of lead in drinking water from a little known, or distant-past, hazard into a national scandal. Human error and coverups resulted in many Flint homes showing staggeringly high levels of lead in their drinking water. What happened in Flint has afflicted other cities. Water districts, which are required to monitor a sampling of homes in their districts for lead in drinking water, are stepping up efforts to prevent more Flints from happening. Here in Colorado, water districts use soda ash and other chemicals to keep their water from being overly corrosive, which was the problem in Flint. How On Earth's Shelley Schlender interviews Michael Cook, district manager of the Little Thompson Water District at the Carter Lake Water Filtration Plant near Loveland. The plant was recently out of compliance, meaning that samples from water district have shown higher levels of lead than what the state health department considers safe. Cook discusses what the district has done. (Boulder has its own water-filtration plant and has not been out of compliance at least in recent years. But all water districts must address similar concerns.) Hosts: Maeve Conran, Susan Moran Producer: Susan Moran Engineer: Maeve Conran Executive Producer: Susan Moran Listen to the show:
